LD51 — Every 10 seconds

Power Surge 51 by vidarn 2022-10-05T20:46:54Z

OK, first off I'm blown away by how much you did in under the compo constraints. Second, the puzzle/strategy mechanics felt really original. Third, the art style is beautiful. I probably don't need to count all my positives, but trust me, there are a lot. There were a number of little things I kept thinking "Oh, I wish that highlight was a bit clearer", or "I'm not sure about the balancing here" etc, but then I had to keep reminding myself - this a jam game! It's a testament to the quality of your work that I was treating this more like a full game in my head. The extent to which you've manged to get an original puzzle idea into a game with this level of depth, that looks this professional, with a playable tutorial is extraordinary. Great, great work!

Nuclear Waste Disposal by Dining Philosopher 2022-10-13T14:45:44Z

This is a really tricky but well conceived game imo. It combines various mechanics in a way I hadn't seen before. There are definitely opportunities to apply different tactics which is cool as well. The graphical style and interface captured the vibe and was very consistent. It took about 3 goes to really comprehend what was actually happening and even then it was really difficult! A clearer indication of what the current colour is would definitely help (as others have said) and a bit more of a gradual ramping up/tutorial would go a long way to easing new players in. Really nice work!

ROAD TXTR by congusbongus 2022-10-15T16:27:45Z

OK, so this is clearly horrific but pretty dang original. Really well put together package - great menu, great art and nice music. The concept works pretty well, although I actually found it easier to get to the end by just immediately clicking any button when a text popped up! So many good design choices though, it was a very smooth experience and overall this a great piece of work.

De-Pres-ING by Bloham 2022-10-13T16:11:34Z

Very polished effort. Neat and coherent look. Simple gameplay and easy to grasp, with the length of time need to make a fix the only unclear bit really. It wasn't the most fun - a bit too easy for most of the time and then very difficult at the top level, but I think a little of tweaking of the difficulty curve could really improve this a lot. A bit more depth and variety of gameplay would make this very replayable I think. As I say though, very polished, plays very smoothly, easy to get in to - good stuff!

Celestial Survivors by candlesan 2022-10-15T16:55:52Z

Simple to play and pick up but the upgrades definitely added some enjoyable depth here. The audio in particular was really well pitched to match the gameplay and visuals. Probably not a perfectly smooth difficulty curve, but it seemed remarkably well balanced for a jam game of this type. Had to keep playing until I got a half decent score so that's definitely a sign of a well made game. Nice work.

The Curse of Tencond by Harry Alissavakis 2022-10-05T19:39:27Z

This is a really nicely made and original game. Particularly fun for me as you used the same core mechanic as I did, but this was such a different approach that I would never have thought of! Really nicely plotted and balanced and I loved the [redacted] feelings it gave me when [redacted] happened. Lovely aesthetic which the gameplay; as did the style of the music (even if it was a bit much after a while). Overall, really really nice piece of work and loads of fun to play to the end!

Pancake Simulator by alec 2022-10-05T20:01:37Z

Gorgeous graphics, lovely music, great relaxing feel - which perfectly suits the game. I thought this was a fantastic bit of work and I had to have and bunch of goes to try and hone my skills. This is the sort of thing that makes game jams worthwhile! Only quibbles were that it seemed to be a bit buggy on the camera movement and trying to flip on the right-hand side, but this didn't make much of dent in the fun. Congrats on such a polished and enjoyable submission!

just got mutiny'd (so I'm making sick jumps and posting about it) by misterstripey 2022-10-09T13:18:43Z

Nice quirky style and like the consistency in the music and visual theming. Bit of a different take on the theme which I liked. Really tricky gameplay but the mechanic of adding on 10 seconds balances this well I think. Hard to tell if the odd controls would be something that I would adapt to over time but this did limit the fun factor a little bit for a short play. Nevertheless, very well done.

Haunted Hollows by Likirus 2022-10-09T16:01:17Z

Cool compo in pure HTML5 and javascript! Had a go at the post-jam version with health bars and it suddenly makes a lot more sense - this was definitely a necessary addition. I think the round and difficulty increases every 10 seconds, although that could be a bit clearer too. With a bit more clarity and variation though this could definitely be a lot of fun, great work!

The Point of Power by EvoGenGames 2022-10-10T19:59:14Z

This is brilliant. The first genuine "aha" moment in the jam, which is a remarkable thing! Simple but thoughtful puzzles which use the 10 second limit really well. Graphically it's pretty basic of course, but that fact that this was so much fun just goes to show that a tool is just tool. I'm also especially fond of this submission because it reminds of my days trying to use PowerPoint 97 as an animation tool! Absolutely superb work - thanks so much!

10 Second Laps by albertnez 2022-10-09T13:51:42Z

As many people have said, this is a very neat and effective game. A nice idea, well executed. Graphics are very basic but informative and a nice little fast-forward effect for the restart. With one-hit death, I think consistent levels would be a better approach to allow you learn your way through.

Sushi Panic by Delightfullymad 2022-10-13T19:24:06Z

Very nice game. Having looked over the other comments I think I had a similar experience to most - thought it was a really neat idea to use key combos for meal prep. I can see how there had to be a balancing element to increase difficulty but the repairing of stuff ended up being most of the game, and that part wasn't much fun! With a different balancing mechanic, or using different key combos for the repairs this could easily flip into being brilliant. Nevertheless, there's no doubt this a great submission - art, sound and execution generally were brilliant. Lovely stuff.

Symphony of Legend by VivianMochi 2022-10-03T22:10:05Z

Great aesthetics, a cool idea and super polished. I'm a big fan of this minimalist style which is consistent through visual and sound. I also really liked the idea of biomes being represented by a single colour.

Definitely agree with other commentators that the arrow keys might be better as the directional attack - that way you wouldn't have to rely on the visual feedback to see where the character is facing, and might make it easier to lock in to the rhythm of the song.

Also thought it was an interesting decision not to have a backbeat and rely on the character's movement - definitely makes it trickier! All in all, really nice game.

[X-ED OUT] by Nash 2022-10-04T20:39:14Z

This is really great. It wasn't obvious to me at first, but after a couple of goes, it became apparent that this is very nicely balanced. The minimal interface works brilliantly. The juice factor is off the chart: the fireworks are perfect, the fade in and out of the beat between waves works great. It's SO much fun to play. Super pro effort - top notch.

Tenfold Rim Mining by PurpledArtFrog 2022-10-05T19:20:08Z

This is cool. First impression was it had a board game vibe, which is a good thing in my book. Very impressive to have incorporated this range of interdependent mechanics and automated operations for a jam game. Only thing is I think it might almost be a bit too ambitious for a compo game! After having played for a while I wasn't totally sure what the goal was. The grinder was destroyed but that didn't seem to affect the gameplay! I think it could have benefitted from a bit more focus, but still had an enjoyable experience.

Renew my Subscription by cassowary 2022-10-13T19:10:46Z

This is the best game I've seen so far, no doubt. Such an interesting, original and mind-bending idea, and really well executed. Beautiful art and nice music (although tbh it was a bit grating after a while!). Would love to play this as a fully fleshed out game - especially if you could develop puzzles with a single solution and hone in on that "moment of revelation" or whatever. Great job teaching the basic mechanics as well, and goes without saying - perfectly tied in with the theme. Also really cool to hear about the source of the idea and the one-electron universe! GREAT.

Dr. Word's Machine by Kaish 2022-10-04T21:38:44Z

Absolutely fantastic, original game idea. Really loved the stark visuals and tasteful sound design - the minimal approach really worked for me. Such an interesting way to approach this sort of game and the story tied in well with the theme. It was genuinely exciting to play something that felt so different! Only a few minor issues picking up items sometimes, and for some reason I had to minimise in order to progress past the story screens. But other than that, utterly brilliant and a delight to play!

Occurrence by Luka Roli 2022-10-13T15:28:33Z

Very original, atmospheric and interesting exploration puzzle game. Definite Outer Wilds vibes. The simple graphics and audio were absolutely great and the whole packaged felt really polished. Working out what to do and what the controls meant was definitely a fun experience.

I tried to play without spoilers and managed to work out how to get about and found some stuff. Then after reading the spoiler I realised I would probably have got there with a bit more patience. All in all, really enjoyed this and love to see games like this that do something different. Thanks a lot!

Spoilery comments now: I might be wrong, but it seemed like the properties were just assigned to random planets, so once you worked out the navigation you just had to trawl through them until you found one. It would great if they each had a meaning so I could use some logic to find them (apologies if I just missed something here).

Rockatoo by AdamCYounis 2022-10-03T12:33:32Z

This feels so ambitious for the jam, and to come out with something so playable and satisfying is super impressive. The songs were really well judged for the format and I liked that each level was tied in to a location. It was really tricky to look up to the top and see the moves I needed to fit in, but that didn't detract from the enjoyment. Lovely art work as per. Overall - superb.

Lucky Lefty Lost In A Labyrinth by TheBookSnail 2022-10-04T21:13:58Z

I'm a big fan of puzzle games so I had to play this one all the way through. The basic mechanic was a neat idea which I hadn't seen before and some of the puzzle designs were satisfying to solve. This may be personal preference, but I thought the 10-second tile breaking element actually detracted from the enjoyment of the game so I turned it off after a few levels (thanks for giving me the option!). Tune and art are quite nice too, overall a good game! Thanks!

Poda Wants a Statue by Doot 2022-10-13T18:18:48Z

What can I say? Just a great, great jam game. Visuals, music, sound design, game design - all fantastic and all put together in a coherent package. The light strategy is at the perfect level for jam game like this imo, and everything was very intuitive so it very quickly becomes obvious what you have to do. I definitely wanted to keep trying to improve my score. Fantastic work all round!

Sailing through life by Chase of Bass 2022-10-09T14:08:34Z

This felt like quite a personal story and was quite nicely told in conjunction with the appearance of the various ships. Really liked the simple artwork as well, and the way the different ships are conceived. The actual gameplay, although interesting, seemed to be totally separate from the story, which was a shame. Tying it in more closely, perhaps collecting stars to uncover the next part of the story, would work better for me personally I think. Really nice bit of work though - thanks for sharing.

Satellite commander by Henrik Ganard 2022-10-03T12:00:56Z

Seemed absolutely impossible at first but fun once I got the knack. Having said that I still haven't got better than C, but managing to actually dodge some satellites was nicely satisfying. Love the random space comms chatter as well, really adds to vibe. I found it was pretty impossible to look away from the satellite for long enough to actually read the screens. Good game!

Needy Pixel Kitties by Aaron Smith 2022-10-03T12:18:56Z

Really nice game. Great kitten sounds, and engaging gameplay. Not much to criticise to be honest! The first level probably went on for a bit too long and I would have liked to be able to press shift again to cancel using the power up (but tbf I should just not press the wrong button). Apart from that, it does what it sets out to do brilliantly.

Fast Dating! by BridgeOnAStick 2022-10-05T21:16:11Z

I found this pretty confusing for a while, and I still don't totally get what I was doing wrong but I really wasn't having any luck!

I like the idea though and the insane art style. A lot of things gradually dawned on me, like oh! that's a child. I count that as fun.

Blades of Doom by Benjamin Halko 2022-10-05T19:47:31Z

Very nice indeed. Definitely a game that has been perfectly balanced which I haven't seen too often. The little design choices like the way it bounces you back off the blades, particularly at the bottom, and just the one solitary blade wandering about make it feel like this has been honed over the course of months! Great visual feedback and feel for jumping about as well. Music is also superb and having leaderboards is great. Top notch!

second interval by ty_ 2022-10-03T20:25:05Z

Watched this game on siraeron’s stream, but wanted to have a go myself as well. This is a really gorgeous game, from the music, to the visuals and the concept. It has quite an individual art style and although the controls can be a bit fiddly this doesn't detract from the calming vibe. I definitely recommend playing this through to the end!

Room Again by SofiGnedova 2022-10-04T11:45:46Z

Really inventive use of the time reset mechanic for this type of game. I thought it was well designed, with no need for a tutorial which is a big plus in my book! Lovely art style and nice music as well. Great fun!

SPACEMAN by arya-s 2022-10-05T21:02:06Z

This is surprisingly addictive! Trying to stand still is not a good plan.

Definitely appreciated the minimal approach to the visual and audio style which complemented the simple but effective design really nicely. Having a high score to beat was definitely a smart inclusion as well. Definitely the simplest game I've played which is also very difficult and fun.

I definitely made a few impossible jumps out of mid air so part of me wants it to be a bit more logical, but that's probably just my own thing and maybe would take all the fun out of it!

It Adds Up Over Time by OminusGalaxy44 2022-10-13T15:46:24Z

Really cool game! The way the effects add up makes for a pretty original gameplay experience and forces you to adapt and stay on your toes constantly. One of the funnier games I've play as well. The graphics were basic but I enjoyed them, particularly the main character's walk animation! It was pretty buggy, which makes sense given how many different effect combinations were going on after a while. I seemed to have infinite health after a while so didn't really need to do anything, and there was a lot more balancing that could be done. I reckon a fully polished and balanced version of this could be a legit game, though. Very nice indeed!

Turnip Terrace by Jonah_SRG 2022-10-04T21:56:18Z

Nice retro audio and art style, and an interesting approach to simplifying the farming game. I didn't watch the tutorial and it wasn't all that necessary as I think the game itself made it clear what you had to do. The only thing I didn't work out was the noise maker. I kept wondering what it was for ages and then whoa! a creature! I would have liked a bit more of a challenge or development but a nice bit of work all in all.

Chronoblink by Ben Barsdell 2022-10-09T13:38:22Z

This is really fun and surprisingly quick to get into. Very satisfying to teleport about and super replayable. I didn't think that the basic movement controls were actually necessary - just moving by teleport might have worked on it's own. Also worth saying, this is fun without the slowmo, but that really does add a nice bonus bit of fun. It was an interesting choice to separate the clock and the slowmo feature, so you have to trade off for points, although it does feel a bit counter-intuitive. Would definitely be interested to see a fully fledged version of this with graphics and more variation/progression etc. Great work!

Birdwatching by Iguanana 2022-10-05T21:33:39Z

This was a nice little game and really shows up my terrible typing! The drawings were really nice, but I did find that I was just looking at the bottom of the screen and not at them which is a shame. Great to see a birdwatching-themed game though, there should be more of these things!

Speedy Farmer by Papaya 2022-10-13T14:16:56Z

This is 2nd 10-second farming game that I've played but it definitely did its own thing. Once I got the hang of it, it felt like it was quite nicely balanced. You are limited, but not too much, by the options on offer and have to make tactical decisions. Nice simple tutorial as well. Music was quite nice and the changing seasons was a very cool touch. The biggest obstacle to fun was the controls - kept putting objects down instead of using them! I like the art too, except for the mixing of resolutions, but that's mostly personal taste! Overall, really nice bit of work.

Switch Heroes by Delpod 2022-10-15T17:21:24Z

Nice work, there is quite a lot of functionality in this, with different enemies, levelling up and the two different characters. The art and music are quite nice too - definitely create the right mood for a dungeon escape. I think only side doors opened for me, and only one at a time, and I don't think there was any logic to the dungeon layout, so perhaps could get rid of any extra doors? The one main suggestion I would say add a lag for the 1st shot from the green guy when you first enter a room - if he spawns very close it's basically impossible to avoid and that kept getting me! Definitely a nice bit of work though - thanks!

Void Timeline by HexStart 2022-10-09T20:57:48Z

Absolutely superb across the board. A genuinely good game without even accounting for the fact it's a jam game. I've already played this way longer than any other so far. Top marks, no question. Also my favourite so far. Congrats to the team on a fantastic piece of work.

Life is Fleeting by Sarah Alexa 2022-10-03T11:41:22Z

Pretty intense! Very impressive to get all those mechanics in there in such a short time. Before playing I couldn't imagine how this would work but I thought the 1-button approach was a smart way of doing it. The fact that you kinda ice-skate around was sort of equal parts frustrating and fun! I'm also not sure my relationship with Robin was the most healthy as I just disappear for weeks, then pop up with a gift and immediately skate off. Great work!

Void Well by Helzinko 2022-10-05T12:41:19Z

Clearly a very polished and well put-together package. It's got a lot going for it! Love the pixel art and palette and sound was really nice but the overall blend of the vibe really sells it I think. Very fun, intense gameplay (I didn't work out any tricks!). Basically, no notes - great game!

Woolly Fire by Arthur Sorignet--Gautrot 2022-10-13T15:59:03Z

Very pro look and art style. It was a bit too much for my onboard graphics! Audio was super nice as well. Was a real shame about the bug with the trucks getting stuck near water, felt quite crucial! I didn't quite follow when or why I got new trucks either, would've been cool to be able to earn them or something. Definite potential though, nice work team!

Jekyll and Hide by Gangrue 2022-10-04T20:12:23Z

Excellent idea, and a particularly interesting take on the theme. Definitely felt very original. I also thought the design was good in the that you quickly pick up the techniques by playing and it was cool that you need a combination of embracing and avoiding the monster within. Took me a few levels before I realised the clue was in the name! It could perhaps have been a bit condensed, and there were a few frustrating bits, but other than that really nice.

Every 10 seconds, mother comes in by lustdante 2022-10-15T17:37:34Z

Nice original theme implementation and really well executed. The aesthetic is cool and definitely suits the historic setting! I wasn't sure if it was a bug at first, when the timer disappeared but clearly it is a feature and I think it works well - maybe a clear in game warning/reason for it (like your watch breaks or something). The main criticism is that it wasn't that much fun for me personally although it sounds like it worked well for a lot of people! Perhaps a bit shorter, or even different levels for different tests. Really good piece of work though!

A Little Bit Of Everything by Matt Ravenhall 2022-10-10T13:57:41Z

I enjoyed this a lot, one of the most simply fun games I've played. Really nice to see this different approach to the theme. Some good variation in puzzle types and some randomization definitely makes this work. I tried a few times and couldn't get past the flag chasing me - that one seemed a big jump in difficulty. A bit more randomization in the other ones (such as the colour sequence or flag positions) would have added to the replayability massively, and a bit of polish wouldn't go amiss but you made a fun game and that ain't easy!

SIEGE: The surprisingly punctual invasion game by AnxiousGameDev 2022-10-03T11:06:38Z

This was a lot of fun, really like the simple artwork style as well. Could definitely benefit from balancing but I like that you have to take quite a counter-intuitive approach to strategy. I would echo the previous comment that the visual design of the towers indicating their function would be good. I wondered if showing the range/properties of the tower when the mouse is over the cell would be one way to do it? Overall, lovely stuff though.

Between Hell&Heaven by Dfyzet 2022-10-04T13:11:36Z

This gets tricky fast! I really like the integration of the theme with the heaven/hell concept here, definitely works well, and ways to use the mechanics definitely emerge after a few minutes of playing as @oolimry mentions. Movement was a bit sticky around objects but otherwise a smooth experience, with nice clear artwork supporting the gameplay.

What's Under The Teapot? by thegamearchitect 2022-10-03T11:11:04Z

I like the gloomy working men's club vibe and the creme egg poster. Quite spooky.

The Peter Principle by Thomas Peterson 2022-10-15T17:10:25Z

This is pretty great! The concept is a lot of fun, running around doing different tasks and it's definitely a nice take on the theme. Makes you question whether the rat race is really worth it. I liked that were a few options for tactical play in choosing the right task as well. The art is really nice as well. A few more different options for tasks would have been nice, but you can say that about every compo game! My main issue is I think it just gets too hard too quickly. After about 5 promotions it seemed basically impossible. Not sure if there is an end game here (maybe there is!), but would have been nice to be able to see how far I was progressing against an end goal. Really nice game that deserves more attention - I definitely suggest you go out give some ratings to other games!

OneTileBoy by ZioxIndieDev 2022-10-10T13:43:05Z

Nice game with retro look and music to match and an interesting idea to do a bullet hell on a grid-based system. Runs very smooth and is nicely polished - I particularly liked the little zoom and score presentation when you die. It also felt pretty well balanced in terms of the amount of bullets vs. power ups etc. I think the only issue is perhaps that movement is on grid, whilst bullets are not, so it made it really difficult to judge dodging, and sometimes a bullet could maybe hit on two adjacent cells? I feel like this would still work really well if the bullets were restricted to the grid! Really nice work though.
