fun little highscore puzzlish game. Although, you should definitely put the controls somewhere using as the arrow keys wasn't an obvious control scheme.

Haha, it took me waaay too long to figure out where I could find "the type of waste indicated", and it was a total mystery how I scored points. I looked everywhere for a symbol, an indicator or a color, but of course I didn't look at the edge of the waste furnace... :face_palm_tone1:

Before I figured out what the scoring was, I did have fun just moving the blocks around and trying to go on for as long as possible:

Frankly, after I found out how the scoring worked, I never got near that score again

Original mechanics of moving the blocks around! But I did find it was not so easy to see which blocks were connected. Perhaps it might be easier to see at a glance what kind of tetris blocks you're dealing with if the white lines between the blocks were in the same color as the blocks itself.

I like the graphics of the game and the finished look. And do I hear your voice when the time runs out, @dining-philosopher?

Nice game, congrats!

What an interesting combination of mechanics. At first glance it reminded me a littttle of Wilmot's Warehouse, but ultimately it's a different beast of a game altogether.

I noticed there are a lot of optimization opportunities all over. 1. While you wait for more blocks to fall, you can start packing things together. 2. Even MORE so you can pack things such that the next set of blocks fall right on top of them. 3. Before using a nuke canister, you can more smartly pack things up and clear them in a more efficient manner.

So it was fun messing around with all that. Though....tbf none of that mattered all that much. I had a score of several hundred before I ended up just quitting.

The game is satisfying at a core level though. It DEFINITELY feels great to bring a big block to the detonation chamber and watching it all go poof. Who knows, perhaps this game will go big and we can all curb the dangers of nuclear waste disposal.

Thanks for the comments all!

@bluedingo: we've added the controls to the description on this page now (not in the game itself though). Thanks!

@papaver: whoah impressive score, my personal best is currently 281. The difficulty is actually already at its hardest after 100 seconds (10 rounds), that could have used some more tweaking I suppose but we wanted it to be kind of short for the jam.

@peachtreeoath: hadn't heard of Wilmot's Warehouse before, very different indeed. I do think we should also have added a face to our game to make it more relatable. Your points about optimizing are interesting, it would have been nice to encourage those things too by somehow giving bonus points for better packing or having the new blocks fall in the right spots or so. And impressive that you can keep the game going, after 10 rounds you have to burn about 12 boxes with each plutonium.

Haha this was very fun. Even though the controls was pretty simple, it became very stressful to remember which color was which key and be able to burn it in time before the next batch of waste came. I enjoyed it alot and also the recommended music fit very well :D

I wasn't initially sure what I was doing tbh, but eventually I think I worked it out. There's definitely an interesting idea here, and it looks great.

I actually really enjoyed this. I have a few gripes however.

The game mechanics should be explained a little better. It took me a few minutes to get a full grasp on what I was doing.

The piece movement is a little weird. I feel like moving pieces into a wall should compress them all into a pile. sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. It feels inconsistent how the pieces stack together.

Also, barrels shouldn't drop onto the incinerator while the pieces are falling. With the lack of control, I felt frustrated that a combo I was setting up was ruined by a random piece that just so happens to have a barrel.

Other than that, the graphics are cool, the gameplay is addicting and fun and it has one of the most unique ideas I've seen so far. Solid game.

I think this game would definitely benefit from some more detailed description of the controls and what needs to be done. It took me a long time to figure out what I had to do, but once that was over and done with I found a really fun, unique puzzler that I enjoyed playing!

unless-games 2022-10-10 17:37

Solid puzzle game!

I think you could make the currently active type more visible, for example the whole background behind the flames could change color as now it is easy to miss even if you look for it. Maybe also have something tell you what will be the next scoring color (to mirror the fact you can see the next blocks)?

For a smoother gameplay I think it would be nice to have an indication of the remaining time on the furnace to be better prepared when new blocks hit. Alternatively some audio loop that cues it.

Also, give us your music with mute on by default. That way you won't annoy anyone but we can still listen :)

Cheers!

Very interesting game that looks great, took me a while to understand how to play it though. The idea of the puzzle is quite cool though and requires a lot of speedy decision making to balance making enough space and burning the right colored trash.

I enjoyed this! I dig the theme. *What if Kojima made a Dr. Mario game*

This is a really tricky but well conceived game imo. It combines various mechanics in a way I hadn't seen before. There are definitely opportunities to apply different tactics which is cool as well. The graphical style and interface captured the vibe and was very consistent. It took about 3 goes to really comprehend what was actually happening and even then it was really difficult! A clearer indication of what the current colour is would definitely help (as others have said) and a bit more of a gradual ramping up/tutorial would go a long way to easing new players in. Really nice work!
