LD24 — Evolution

Shape the World! by Cyboot 2012-08-29T10:56:00

Cool graphics and very nice piano music! It motivated me to play further. Gameplay-wise there are 2 things that could be improved: 1. Variation - the collection aspect seemed to get a bit repetitive after a few minutes 2. Collision with those star things could pretty much reduce your health from 100% to 0% - perhaps once you are hit, have 0.5-1s before you can be hit again.

Cage Flight by Will Edwards 2012-08-26T13:06:00

Looks cool! This will be just like Descent from the good old days :)

Cage Flight by Will Edwards 2012-08-28T12:01:00

Cool idea and nice graphics, but like many others the game was crippled by the lag - it's probably because I'm way over in New Zealand :(

The Darkness Evolve!! by juaxix 2012-08-27T09:49:00

Cool looking game - I love the whole concept of going from world to world - I agree with the other comments though. The camera angles are awkward and the controls seem to be a bit hard to use. If you could improve those it would be awesome :)

Evolving Situation by Tangent128 2012-08-27T09:10:00

Lol, quite a funny and original little game :) It's a bit of simulation I guess.

Deal with It by midgard 2012-08-27T08:01:00

Cool game! It reminds me of Super Meat Boy :)

Game-Age by Lacutis 2012-08-28T08:40:00

Great game - it's lots of fun!

Peanuts! by deejorg 2012-08-28T12:34:00

Cool game, it's a really neat twist on the platformer genre. Only problem for me is at the end of level 1 the whole screen went white, and my final peanut fell off the screen

'Volver by Wyatt White 2012-08-27T08:52:00

No there are no links to this game. Wyatt, you may have forgotten to include a link to your game?

Create This by Lobster Games 2012-08-31T08:58:00

Funny game! Like the rambo Darwin mashup! Would be nice if you could get your health back some how and also have checkpoints.

Vol by Thomas Bowker 2012-09-02T00:42:00

Cool game dude! Man I wish I could use Unity, I'd love to make an RPG like Eye of the Beholder or Bard's Tale using this sort of style.

FOR THE darWIN by TravisChen 2012-08-29T06:24:00

Cool retro sprites and sounds! It reminds me of those old bitmap bros games on the amiga :) I couldn't quite figure out the sequences though.

Evo Face by DiscoFish 2012-08-27T08:02:00

Wow, some great creativity here Disco! I will definitely take a look at your capx this is technically amazing!

Super Robocade by VoEC 2012-08-27T08:42:00

Excellent game dude! Just like classic GBA - I bet this would make a legendary mobile game. Is there more than one level? If you could vary the environment a bit it would be even better :)

Oh my, a shooter with blocks! by Dir3kt 2012-08-27T09:14:00

Hi there, it seems to load for a long time and nothing appears?

Where am I? by AgentParsec 2012-09-10T12:41:00

As an interactive experience, I thought the game was great - it was moody and suspenseful. The music and sound fx really contributed to creating an eerie weird world. However, as per some of the comments above, it wasn't much of a game, i.e. no progression, goals, enemies, etc...

Bitolution Love by tronster 2012-08-28T08:17:00

Hmm, I didn't quite figure out how to play...

Creationism vs Evolutionism - The Ultimate Quiz? by Lidfrid 2012-08-27T09:13:00

It's quite a funny game! I definitely appreciate the irony of the answers :)

The Phoenix Rising by Brassawiking 2012-08-27T10:16:00

Wow, amazing graphics - it's a really original style with paintings. I'd love to see more of your work! I couldn't get past the first part though, I got Sabine to reach into her bag and that was about it?

evolving by pjchardt 2012-08-29T11:07:00

Kind of a quirky artsy game - is it more of a sandbox type game?

An Amoeba's Awesome Adventure. by zakchaos 2012-08-28T08:37:00

Awesome game! Well done Zak!

LimiT by Sakuyan 2012-08-28T12:31:00

Amazing graphics done in a short time! I didn't have any sound come through though? Also if there was enough time, more levels would have been great.

EvoRide by inakrinat 2012-08-28T11:42:00

Amazing graphics and sound. I guess to improve you could consider adding some 'bad' elements like obstacles or bad guys to slow you down or hurt you, otherwise it feels like more of a ride than a challenge

Oculus Battalion by Maxium 2012-08-29T06:39:00

Kind of a fun shootem up. I could quite understand how to capture the green guys tho. Also on level 3 I seemed to get instakilled from 500 health to zero by a barrage from those eye shooting guys

Badass by Sos 2012-08-27T09:25:00

Hilarious! I played it right to the end of the rainbow :) One thing that would improve the game would be to vary the game play somehow, perhaps have combo attacks or shooting?

Germa by Whiteclaws 2012-08-28T08:38:00

Fantastic game KBD - loved the concept! It reminded me of Osmos on the android - keep up the good work :)

Evolution in HELL by shayl 2012-09-02T00:45:00

Great work esp considering this is your first program!

Move forward by michax 2012-08-27T09:19:00

Very nice 3d graphics! Once I went through the cave, everything went black and finishes - is that intentional?

Yellow Dog by Barry Abrams 2012-08-29T06:35:00

Lol funny little tamagochi type game! Loved the retro graphics. Only improvement would be to introduce more gameplay elements - after stage 3 it became a bit easy and repetitive.

Cellvolution by thewiseguy99 2012-08-28T08:23:00

I get a black screen?

Unstealthiest Ninja by brother.byto 2012-08-28T08:03:00

I like the novel idea! To make it even better the gameplay could do with a bit more explanation - I wasn't sure how I was supposed to create a path at the start.

Booster by fhoenig 2012-08-29T06:43:00

Cool graphics, but on the web it seemed to slow down to a crawl

Terminal Illness by chorinator 2012-08-29T06:26:00

I liked the music and the overall presentation. The control and gameplay need to be tweaked a bit though - I found it tough to control the amoeba thing - too much inertia

Evomatch by delerium10101 2012-08-27T08:36:00

Love the colors and vibrance, but I couldn't quite figure out which cat I was and it seemed to say I won without me doing anything?

Dusty Balls by ThatSamu 2012-08-27T09:38:00

Nice graphics! There's an xbox indie game just like this. Not sure how this fits the evolution theme?

[0-Evo] by Krobill 2012-08-28T11:52:00

Cool graphics! Looks just like you're looking down a microscope! I wasn't entirely sure about the gameplay though - wasn't entirely clear what teh objective was...

Abbadon by gustavodort 2012-08-28T09:51:00

Wow that is one trippy %$#! game! Awesome dude so weird but so cool. Only feedback is that maybe the final boss isn't so tricky, or perhaps have a waypoint so you don't have to go through the dialog every time.

Conway's Revenge by Nick Knowlson 2012-08-27T10:02:00

Wow this is so weirdly addictive! At first I thought it was a bit plain, but I ended up playing this for a few minutes! It was fascinating looking for particular patterns that could last!

ALLEL by rodrigomotta 2012-08-28T09:43:00

Cool game, I always love robotron/geometry war type games - in fact my entry is the same. The only thing that needs fixing is you really need autofire, which is ironically is the same thing I should have added to my own game:)

ContraEvolution by the.vaber 2012-08-28T11:46:00

Very nice visuals and intriguing style - I didn't quite pick up on how to play though?

Do the Evolution, baby! by atraxgames 2012-08-28T09:57:00

Very cool style - I wasn't sure if there was an objective beyond the sandpit?

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-26T11:29:00

Note that both web links are for the same game, I just added Dropbox as a backup in case my web host is slow for anyone.

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-27T06:35:00

Thanks for the great feedback guys! If only I had time to make changes it would be so cool! :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-27T06:39:00

Hi @Nivalys, you can still use the arrow keys to move if that's easier (I forgot to disable it at setup hehe!).

Hi @Twisted Devotion, if it's a bit laggy, you could try running the game on google chrome, and if it's still a bit slow you can turn the effects off in the settings on the main screen, although it looks a bit crappy if you do that. Thanks for the excellent feedback guys, it will be so helpful for the next LD25 :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-28T07:53:00

Thanks for the fantastic and helpful feedback guys, I'm glad you enjoyed the game :)

Sorry about having no autofire - the game I designed at the start was quite different from what it ended up becoming. If I were to be allowed to make a change, that would definitely be the first thing I'd fix :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-28T10:03:00

Thanks for the great feedback guys, I plan to use all of your suggestions at the end of LD24 to improve the game further, and perhaps release it in other game hub sites :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-28T12:19:00

Wow I'm honoured thanks Batiali :) Yeah I was aiming for an old school retro feel with the alpha-noise layer, but I guess on some browsers it may appear too harsh. I'll remove it for my next version after LD24.

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-29T05:04:00

Nice one thanks for the great feedback guys! Cheers @Krobill and others, for some specific tweaks, I will definitely use them for the October challenge! :) Cheers to fellow talented Construct 2 developers Zakchaos, Jann, KBDMaster and Lacutis for the support! :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-29T05:08:00

@science4cake - to deploy to dropbox:
1. Create a new folder for your game under the Public folder
2. Export from C2 your game in HTML5 format
3. Copy the contents of the export into the folder in Dropbox
4. Right Click on the index.html file and select copy public URL to clipboard
5. Use this as your web URL

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-29T22:51:00

Thanks for the suggestion Sergey, I checked it out, and it was awesome! I definitely would like to add the glowing neon style for next time :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-31T08:52:00

Thanks for the fantastic feedback guys! Glad you had fun - that's the best reward for a game dev:)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-08-31T08:53:00

@denzgo you can open the source with the game engine I use called Construct 2 - here's a link: http://www.scirra.com/. The free edition only allows 100 lines of code to be opened, and I may have gone over that limit unfortunately.

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-01T22:52:00

Thanks for playing guys and for the great feedback! :) Apologies for no autofire, for the redux I'm definitely going to have it in there :D Ironically that was my biggest gripe about Diablo 3 hehe!

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-01T22:56:00

@Cyboot - it would be a dream to work with a proper artist :) Until then, I'll have to continue to scrounge around the web for open source stuff like a raccoon hehe! :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-02T00:30:00

Thanks for the great feedback Jedi :) What version of FF were you using? I only had time to test with 12, which seemed to work ok. I did find with IE8 none of the webshaders worked unfortunately, which is why I provided a setting to turn off the pixellation and alpha noise effects. Chrome was definitely the best browser out of the lot for this game.

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-03T09:08:00

Hmm that's odd, I would have thought later FF would be more tolerant to HTML5 effects?

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-04T10:10:00

Thanks for the great feedback Matthias - since the compo I've actually fixed the autofire, although I've still retained the option of slightly faster manual fire. I'll have to figure out how to post a post-compo game without breaking the rules.

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-08T03:41:00

Thanks for the feedback guys! :)
@RipX, the game uses quite a few WebGL shader effects, so chrome is the best browser to use when playing. What browser are you using by the way?

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-12T14:05:00

Thanks for the kind comments guys! I made a simple correction to the autofire here: http://www.eyemobi.com/games/bce/. Please don't consider this for the contest though, it's just a n experiment to add in autofire, although you can still spam manual fire if you like :)

Bit-Craft Evolution by eyehawk 2012-09-18T21:24:00

Thanks for the feedback Dan :) Yea I'm guessing the noise layer may appear harsher on some PC's than others. I might see if there's a 'scan-line' effect I can use rather than noise for the retro look.

ROLL PAPER, ROLL!! by Lapinou 2012-08-28T08:22:00

Really loved the setting on top of the mountain and the whole game concept was so unique, but I couldn't quite figure out how to play. Also just a suggestion, but perhaps next time swap out that scratching sound with something less grating - it was hard to listen to.

the Evolution from zx81 by zx81 2012-08-29T05:30:00

Here's my evaluation:
PROS:
1 Lively, fun cartoony graphics
2 Responsive controls
3 Great concept and creative/clever application of the theme
CONS:
1 Frustrating gameplay - too many punishing factors e.g.:
1a falling through the gaps to easily
1b getting stunned from bonking your head (I'd remove this)
2 The gaps for the first level seem to take quite a while to cycle around

Ascension Garden by sclark39 2012-08-27T09:08:00

I love the 'spirograph' look and feel. I just couldn't quite figure out how to play the game properly though.

Neural Nodes by Kmad 2012-09-01T23:18:00

Dude! This game is so excellent I don't know where to start :) Art: loved your cartoon style - the floating space monster piqued my interest as soon as I saw it. I absolutely love Turn based strategy - as soon as I figured out all the rules I was hooked (finished it 2nd time around yay!). You've also incorporated the theme appropriately and seamlessly. The lack of sound strangely enough was not a big deal for me, but even if you had a simple soundtrack (garage band is awesome for this) and perhaps af3sfxr to make simple sound effects it would have been just that much cooler. Still, awesome game I would play this again!

Roomless Things by FaceSquid 2012-08-28T11:39:00

I didn't quite get what I had to do? When I clicked on things everything would fall through teh ground

LEVOLUTION! by xk 2012-08-27T08:19:00

Nice simple fun! Great Work!

Improv by benderbinary 2012-08-28T12:13:00

erm, that was quite strange - I couldn't understand what the objective was.

IO VUOLE ZEN by Capro 2012-08-28T08:13:00

Erm.. things didn't bode well when the game claimed to want to make me ragequit - which it did :)

viviDNA by Gama11 2012-08-28T12:37:00

Cool game! Really simple, addictive fun! I liked how the music, theme, graphics and game play really added up to a fun experience - well done!

Gone With The Wind by Alface 2012-08-28T08:28:00

Cool game, but it seemed to freeze up after I got to the shop? Also I didn't figure out how evolution ties into the game?

Grow by Certainty 2012-08-31T09:30:00

Love the retro look and feel of the game. The scan lines were pretty cool like an old school monitor! The only criticisms I have are for the actual game play - the enemies follow you too precisely - perhaps make them lag behind you a little. Also at the start you need far too much precision to pick up the food - perhaps expand the collision detection a little more.

Evolver Worm by PixelPusher27 2012-08-28T11:49:00

Cool idea, but you need to decrease the jump and drop speed of the worm

Darbot Saves Science by science4cake 2012-08-28T09:53:00

oh noes its still awaiting approval at the Scirra arcade... By the way when it's ready, feel free to post on the C2 forums, I'm putting up links to everyone's games there: http://www.scirra.com/forum/topic56003.html

The Spaceworm by Clocwise 2012-08-28T12:05:00

Cool retro game! Reminds me of the spectrum computer :) Only thing that the game needs is autofire, which funnily enough I need to put into my own game:)

Quantum Seed by motionbit 2012-09-10T12:44:00

Top marks for audio and graphics! Loved the artistic style you guys have used. The gameplay itself sadly didn't meet the lofty standards of the FX - it felt rather flat.

Temple of Evolution by Codexus 2012-08-29T06:52:00

Great look and style! I couldn't catch the rabbit though..

Strike of Rage ! by deepnight 2012-08-31T23:25:00

Very cool streets of rage game! Loved the retro fighting game feel - I played about x4. I wish there was a bit more variety in the attacks though, maybe a kick button?

One Day To Breed by Hazel 2012-08-29T11:40:00

Haha, I was cracking up at your feature list before I played the game - e.g. bad coder art, worse coder music :) But honestly though quite a cool quirky game! Loved the style of the cat and the cartoony world!

2-deoxyribose by Gib 2012-08-31T09:41:00

Fun game! I'm a big fan of retro style games. I always love a good geometry wars game so this was cool for me! I have a few things that would help improve:
1. Get rid of the screen shake when you're firing
2. Bound the player within the screen (you can float out accidently)
3. Allow the player to fire continuously (no reloads)

Rise of the Meebas by Jimjam 2012-08-27T09:05:00

Love the look of this game - very creative! I couldn't figure out how to stay alive for more than 3 seconds though. Also a suggestion on the music: the church bells are really grating after a while, I'd reduce the volume on them or replace them.

Boxy the Boxcat in Evolution Escapades by matthias_zarzecki 2012-08-27T09:43:00

Cool looking game dude! I love the simple "lego" look. If you could add some sort of boost effect that would make it a bit more fun. Also if there were some bad guys chasing you around that would add to the excitement.

Star Explorers of the United Nations by chardish 2012-08-28T12:25:00

Great retro shooter, I loved the music and the old style look. 2 things that would vastly improve the game: 1. Have more enemies on screen, and perhaps have them die on one hit, 2. The weapon upgrades are too similar, make them more different, e.g. different colors, fire shots out at different angles, vary the speed etc..

Ulovetion by Colapsydo 2012-08-27T08:50:00

The game is intriguing, definitely piqued my interest, but I couldn't quite figure out what I was doing. Perhaps during the game you could provide more feedback on if I'm winning or losing?

Evo Towerwars by Rialgar 2012-08-28T08:07:00

I kind of like the tower defence game you've made here. If you could add more content (e.g. sounds, graphics, gameplay) it would make it even more kick ass!

What's All The Rush For by batiali 2012-08-28T09:37:00

Cool graphics, sound and concept! The only let down was the gameplay itself unfortunately - QTE games are quite repetitive. If you could make it into a simple platformer like Robot Unicorns Attack, this game would have been legendary :)

The Balance by mr_Hk_ 2012-08-27T10:12:00

Wow, the graphics and sounds blew me away! The only suggestion I have is to somehow vary the game play a bit as it could get a little repetitive. I guess if it's more of a chill out/relaxing game where you enjoy the sounds and visuals, then it definitely achieves it's goal! :)

'The Neon Pink Philosophy' by Zed 2012-08-29T22:49:00

Wow, love combined originality of the story, graphics and gameplay! My only suggestion is that you speed up the evolution and game pacing in general. Other than that well done!

Plinko Breeder by Jedi 2012-09-02T00:16:00

You're definitely on to a cool game idea here - there's a lot of potential on how you could develop this further. The pieces could perhaps be little creatures (like Squinkeys) or something. Technically I like the camera work and the graphics in general. I did find that all my stuff would get clogged up between the gaps though - perhaps completely rounded shapes would work a little better.

Go Darwin by StabAlarash 2012-08-28T08:11:00

Hilarious game dude! Great gameplay and great use of the theme - it made me laugh out loud :)

Plop by Yann 2012-08-27T07:56:00

Nice Game Yann! Great effort as always with C2

Space Ham by FunByJohn 2012-08-26T11:31:00

Haha! Hilarious and fun game! How did you come up with the idea?

Social Evolution by Jorjon 2012-09-02T08:24:00

Cool sprites and retro filters! I definitely appreciated the old-skool style. The gameplay felt a little hollow though. Perhaps if you wanted to develop this further, you could make more of a visual connection when the player gets the upgrades, e.g. he buys a car and all of a sudden the character is driving around in a car for instance.

Sidescroller Evolution by Kassoon 2012-08-28T12:47:00

Really cool chilled out game! The "painted" style graphics blew me away, and the music was nice. The only recommendation I have is to have way points so you don't have to start right from the beginning.

Coming Into Focus by Gjarble 2012-08-29T06:18:00

Dude, wow I absolutely love the ultra-retro ascii graphics!!! I'm actually a bit inspired now to make an ascii game like those ascii art videos! The only down side to the game was actually in the game play - the jump/fall is too fast. I couldn't for the life of me get past the second floor - kept hitting the X up high.

Overall though loved the originality!

Microbe Madness! by Matt Rix 2012-08-29T11:35:00

Amazing Game! Really original take on the RTS genre. I played this game probably for 20 mins straigh- 5 stars from me well done!

MuTaTrIs by yosh 2012-09-02T08:17:00

I liked the music and the background - it's an interesting take on an age old formula. If you could do a little bit more with the mutation twist I think the game would be even better. As it was I thought it was ok, but not compelling enough to play for long.

Little City by Keevor 2012-08-27T09:27:00

It's a very charming game, loved the miniture city idea. I couldn't quite figure out how to play though?

Microbia PLUS by colincapurso 2012-08-28T08:24:00

Using chrome, I get a blank screen...

Trinity Labs by Gareth Jenkins 2012-08-28T11:59:00

This is one of the most bizarre yet so weirdly addictive games I've played! It's so strange, yet I couldn't stop playing! Great game!

Dawn by SteelRaven7 2012-08-27T09:52:00

Nice graphics and style. It would be nice to have the controls though.

Robot Panic by Oliver Simon 2012-08-29T08:02:00

Chilled out atmosphere - nice!

Evolve Larry by gregdevice 2012-08-27T09:34:00

Really cool original artwork and sounds. It has an excellent funny quirky vibe to it. In terms of feedback, the game gets a little repetitive, if you could find some way of changing up the game play a bit it would be even more awesome!

Super Charles Darwin by gnx 2012-08-29T06:42:00

Funny game! The whole Monty-Python-esque theme really cracked me up. A suggestion: make the jump a bit higher, it was a little tricky trying to jump even small distances. also way points would have been awesome

One Last Chance by recursive frog 2012-08-28T12:11:00

Quite an interesting concept - I was hooked by the mysterious setup. However after I talked to that lady, I couldn't figure out what to do next...

AntZ Evolution by thesentinelcat 2012-08-27T08:34:00

Interesting - I guess this is a sandbox type game. I couldn't quite understand how to play it, perhaps you could have in game instructions and objectives to make it clearer.

Disease by lesterpig 2012-08-28T12:07:00

Nice concept, music and graphics, but yeah it was too buggy for me to play - I kept getting flicked back and forth between rooms.

1002 by Eniimal 2012-08-28T12:17:00

Cool graphics, not sure what the objective was though? I flew into a planet and my spaceship went nuts

evophonia - evolve music by chas 2012-08-28T10:00:00

Interesting version of a rhythm game - love the graphics! You should limit the keys for playing music to maybe 5-6 max? I found it tricky just on novice! :)

RED PLANET by BuffaloPhil 2012-08-28T09:15:00

Cool adventure game! Did you make this game with Construct 2?

Attack of the killer cute things! by Waynetron 2012-08-28T12:40:00

Nice graphics and style, but the game play was a bit repetive - perhaps have powerups and more enemy types to vary it a bit.

Dissolution by Sergey Mohov 2012-08-29T11:04:00

Really cool retro game! After I reached the cave I couldn't seem to progress, but from the comments I guess you're still building it
