LD19 — Discovery

Impatient Archaeologist by Hellfang 2010-12-20T08:31:00

That was surprisingly fun. The only problem is the lack of a challenge, as you can just spam dynamite to dig a deep hole, fall down to a lower ledge, then spam dynamite again. Perhaps limiting the rate you can throw dynamite at would make people try to use more strategy when planning their route.

Zoobedoo by Hamumu 2011-01-09T02:40:00

Very cool game! I think it would be a good game for a smart phone (iPhone/Android). And it looks really well polished!

Case Closed by madk 2010-12-20T07:51:00

Awesome game! I really like what you've done with the ascii art, it gives it a nice retro-feel. Its obvious that a lot of work was put into creating storyline and content for it.

You Found the Crystal by GameRoom 2010-12-20T08:16:00

Trippy graphics and music! That was amusing, but I don't think I appreciate seeing where I died from hitting the spikes many, many times. =P

Prophecy by PaulSB 2011-01-08T08:46:00

Good concept, but scrolling through the list of students takes a long time, as does going through the list of skills they possess.

Solaris Prospectus by varun 2010-12-20T05:20:00

Not bad. It could be a bit more interesting. I like the wrap-around and the scrolling star field. The ship also looks nice.

Deep sea discovey by piotrekb 2010-12-20T07:29:00

I took a look at the graphics and listened to the sound, and they were good. However, it looks like there was a problem loading the maps that made it crash, so I can't judge the gameplay. Nice menu screen though.

Pass it! v1.1.5 by Folis 2010-12-20T07:54:00

The sounds got annoying rather quickly.

Arise by Jonneh 2010-12-20T07:14:00

While it fits the theme, it was rather boring. I agree that there were too many checkpoints.

Perluq Zafraais by Kalakian 2010-12-20T08:00:00

That creature reminds me of the dust bunnies in Money Town. Ironically, the dust in that game is also gray, the only difference is that this creature "removes" the dust whereas those ones "added" dust.
Oh, and I have a fear of spiders, so seeing them scattered all over the map was rather frightening. ;-)

-REACH- by Zachary Lewis 2011-01-09T02:46:00

Neat game. Very simple and lots of luck. I found mostly unremarkable planets. XD

Researching String Theory by Zoltam 2011-01-08T08:59:00

Neat game. I can see it being really addicting, except it was really hard to play with this track pad (because it randomly stops/starts working). I'll have to try playing again with a real mouse.

Discoveries by whitetigle 2011-01-09T02:32:00

Interesting concept, but knowing what to do was confusing, and it felt slow.

Attack of the time travelling pygmy from outer paleolithic (aka Time Pygmy) by deepnight 2010-12-20T05:09:00

Nice game, that was cool!

Cardboard adventure by bmfs 2011-01-09T03:06:00

Interesting "cut-out of paper" look for the graphics. The controls aren't that great though.

PRIOR by krangGAMES 2010-12-21T10:02:00

I really like what you did with this game. Even though your strength might not have been in graphics, you used what you could make to create an amazing atmosphere with a unique visual style. Honestly, I think the lack of "beautiful" graphics helped; if they had been more prominent I feel like it would have taken away from the game. Same with the music, it really added to the atmosphere. And that "zero-gravity" was quite slick.

Hey, Person! by barigorokarl 2010-12-20T05:31:00

I got accused of being him reborn again. XD
Nice character style. The look of the rooms got kind of repetitive after a while.

Fog of War by jcurrie33 2011-01-09T02:25:00

Addicting game! It feels like there must be some pattern to how the monsters move, but I don't know it well enough to manipulate it to my advantage.

ancient codes by acidninja 2011-01-08T08:53:00

This was fun, I liked the sounds it made, and the cool glowing rune-like shapes.

LoneMine by OddOneOut 2010-12-20T07:44:00

I installed both of the dependencies, but it still wouldn't run. I like how the dialog box in the screenshot is semi-transparent, perhaps I'll use a similar effect in a future game.

Space Pings! by idgar 2010-12-20T08:24:00

I have XNA and the .NET frameworks installed, but I wasn't able to get the game to work.

The Dreamer by johnfn 2010-12-21T10:26:00

Haha, lots of losing focus. Nice sort of dream-like music too. Getting used to the controls took a while, I think it responds a little too quickly. Overall it was satisfying to play.

DEATHWISH by Alexbrainbox 2011-01-09T03:12:00

Aww, poor person. ='(
So many deadly things in doorless rooms. I wonder how he got in there in the first place.

Zonar by Ryan 2010-12-31T22:46:00

Yeah, its fine (unless my computer was infected). I'm guessing you use TrendMicro? It looks like out of the 43 scanners, only that one thinks its infected.

Zonar by Ryan 2011-01-08T06:07:00

Yeah, the compo version crashes a lot. Especially the Windows version. I had a few problems building that version and it didn't get nearly as much testing. The Jam version for Windows might also crash quite a bit, but I haven't tested it much either, mostly just on a Mac. Next time I'll focus more on getting a working Windows build earlier on.

Espial by NGuillemot 2010-12-20T08:12:00

Really easy game to pick-up, and addicting in a strange sort of way.

Discover19 by Suyo 2010-12-20T05:40:00

Nice and simple, gradually introducing new buttons one at a time.

Land of the Fishies by EricTheCoolDude 2011-01-09T02:50:00

I like the graphics, and playing the guitar was a fun idea!

Clarity by Hooka 2011-01-09T02:55:00

I didn't really get the point of the game. It looks like the gradient mini-game you play with Santa just gives you points each time you click, with no penalty for clicking in the wrong place. Possibly a bug?

BoxMiner by Club559 2010-12-20T08:21:00

This game isn't terribly interesting, its rather repetitive. Some form of death or time limit might make it more challenging.

Dr Discovery by drZool 2011-01-09T03:00:00

I like how the bad guys just stand there shooting at thin air. On one hand it could be harder if you could shoot up and down, but that could also make it easier in some ways...

2011 - Last Ride of the Discovery by dertom 2010-12-20T07:37:00

Very nice physics. As others have said, its quite a bit of trial and error at first to figure out how the angle and speed affect the path, but overall it is a well executed idea, and a different take on the word "Discovery" than many of the other entries used.

Island Commander by Jerm 2010-12-20T08:06:00

I liked the semi-3d effect used for attacking islands via Helicopter. Interesting combination of both overhead views for navigating the sea, with a side scrolling view for attacking islands.

Search&Bump by Balooga03 2010-12-20T07:20:00

Quite simple. Reminds me of asteroids, except you try to hit some of the rocks instead of avoiding and destroying them all. I feel like this needs some more tweaking to be addictive.

Explosive Transcendental Circulatory System by NiallM 2010-12-20T05:53:00

Interesting graphics and sounds... I "discovered" that moving the mouse changes the colors and sounds, hitting keys makes the letters/numbers appear and plays a sound, and clicking seems to make shapes appear. It was oddly entertaining.

Quarters by Terry 2010-12-20T05:49:00

That was surprisingly fun, it would be awesome to play with other people, and it seems like it would be well suited for playing on a smart phone.

LD38 — A Small World

Enlarge your planet ! by LeReveur 2017-05-14T21:59:46Z

Nice idea, I like the planet artwork, it has an old-school almost 3D kind of feel. It feels like it is mostly a test of how long do you want to wait for your planet to grow in size, since building more than 1 probe seems to just make it harder to execute a perfect stop; on the upside, you don't have to wait as long to stop the planet growth.

ATLANTIS by OccultOne 2017-05-16T08:09:11Z

You've got a good art style. The blue zone selection could use some tweaking to fit better with the pixel art texture of the rest of the game (a semi-transparent diamond block in Minecraft comes to mind).

Interesting game, keep it up. Also, nice metrics post, its always interesting to see some stats.

Antology by ragnta 2017-05-14T21:41:48Z

The concept is interesting, though it felt like the only way to "win" was to grind a few levels until you get beat the next stronger type of ant without difficulty. The large leap from level 5 ants to a level 9 queen probably contributed the most to the feel of it being grindy. It almost feels like Sim Ant meets Pokemon for combat.

Antagonistic : Hamburger Hill by ryte2byte 2017-05-16T06:30:46Z

Really interesting take on an "ant" game. Who knew it was so hard to eat a burger in peace? The two things that were most challenging were figuring out which direction I was facing -- maybe some form of compass would help -- and losing the targeting reticle when it got too far from me. I think making sure the reticle stands out on top of the grass would help, possibly also with a set minimum size for it, since its possible that the reticle got so small that it just stopped getting rendered at longer distances.

TARJECTORIES by csanyk 2017-05-16T06:07:03Z

Increasing the number of planets sooner would be a nice addition. Simple, yet effective, graphics. Gameplay is the essence of games like GunBound or Worms. I had issues with decreasing the power with WASD. It seems "D" was adjusting both the turret angle and decreasing the power, and "S" wasn't doing anything.

Planets of Zoltcon by terryg 2017-05-16T07:06:07Z

Nice art style, and the planets shrinking/growing to unlock access to different parts of their interiors is an interesting mechanic. It added quite a bit of challenge to figuring out when the right time to enter the interior is in order to get to the areas you need to unlock.

The biggest problem (bug) I encountered was getting stuck in the floor a few times when jumping up onto a platform inside the caves (fortunately there is an escape button).

Timmy and the Snowflake by C0nst4ntin 2017-05-14T23:31:31Z

It feels like a lot of times I needed to double jump, since the first one wouldn't go very high. An animated walking/jumping sequence would be a really nice addition. I liked the fluttering of the coat after a jump while falling.

SnowGlobe Warrior by Ethan Allwood 2017-05-14T22:46:09Z

That was a really good game. Very simple, but it draws you in. Stage 3 seemed really long/hard compared to the first two, then I realized I was supposed to be attacking the tentacle monster and that the other enemies would just keep spawning forever.

Bad RNG by FiloGC 2017-05-14T23:14:06Z

Fun little game. Tricky to get a high score. The graphics art style is nice, it reminds me of some of the artistic renderings in PCB layout software. Do you play Guild Wars 2 by any chance? I'm sure there are legendaries in other games too, but people seemed to like ranting about the RNG being bad in that game quite a lot for precursor drops.

Planet Of The Precursors by ThatSnillet 2017-05-14T22:10:40Z

Good game. Aiming kicks is a bit tricky, and there were several times that I thought I'd killed an enemy, only to be mauled by another one. The shadows (like the side of a temple opposite the sun) seem too dark, but overall the graphics are nice.

Exit.. space left by HomineLudens 2017-05-14T23:21:59Z

As many have said, the pixel art is nice, as is the ambient soundtrack. A bit more variety/challenge would be good, and less of the "get stuff, go back to base to refuel" would be nice for continued development. I like the flying mechanics, it feels like lunar lander.

Draw a Small World by ryan 2017-05-14T21:46:26Z

@pete thanks! If I'd had time to actually make a game I was thinking of adding some procedural world generation and some "AI".

Draw a Small World by ryan 2017-05-16T07:15:09Z

Truly a work of art, @ryte2byte! That sun is much more detailed than anything I could ever draw, and the Pac-Man ghosts are genius for the animals. I should've added a gallery feature to show off the works of art everyone creates.

Test by Malik 2017-05-18T02:38:24Z

It looks like the link in your news post about the game being up does not work: https://benslimane.itch.io/where-is-she

Samhain: Fly Away Home by Vanillycake 2017-05-16T07:03:35Z

This game is beautiful! The combination of 2D pixel art (with animations!) and the 3D environment turned out really nice. The end game image was also really nicely drawn. The music lends a nice ambiance that fits with the feel of the game.

In terms of difficulty, I felt like the game was a bit too easy because of the flying (though for a LD game it was perfect in terms of getting a feel for the entire game without a huge time investment), since most of the level could be flown through with limited dodging of snowflakes -- maybe an energy/endurance bar would make it a bit more challenging and emphasize more of the platforming and dodging enemies near the ground.

Overall, this feels like it would work as a good early prototype for a future game with multiple levels, with a longer story line.

Depth by CreamyBacon2 2017-05-14T23:08:13Z

I liked this idea for a puzzle game. It feels like it would be good as a web based game that you can just sit down and play a quick round, or maybe somehow adapt it to mobile and play on the go -- themed level packs would be interesting, like a pack with all the levels are recognizable characters (or objects) from kirby.

Locker C-18 by simonmnt 2017-05-16T07:58:36Z

Cute wurmy-thing! I thought I was immortal, then I walked into a push-pin and died a horrible death!

Basically a maze, except it is in the dark, so everything is harder!

Cubic Explorer by glitchy-pixel 2017-05-16T07:33:23Z

The HTML5 version on gamejolt got stuck on loading -- I guess it doesn't play nice with ABP.

The procedural generation of cubic worlds is interesting but after seeing a couple it felt like every world was the same aside from their texture and what assortment of random doors or objects appeared. Different objects and enemies unique to a particular type of world (ie - ice) would add a feeling of each world being special in its own way; the enemies could use have their appearance and an attack (to add to the challenge and avoid the feeling of "oh, just another block enemy") randomly chosen based on the world type.

Little Wild Invasion by Titangea 2017-05-16T06:43:00Z

I really loved the cartoon-ish shading and art style. The tiny planet felt like it was a good size for the length of time that you needed to survive for. I didn't really understand the mechanic of the bubbles ("purple meteors"); I think making their falling trajectory more obvious would make them more understandable, perhaps by moving them to a higher altitude so that it is easier to see where they are falling towards. The way they are right now felt like homing missiles aiming at any players who got too close.

Other than that, I'm bad at reading directions and didn't realize at first that the bubbles are the way to kill the monster and tried using a power up. Maybe adding some other kinds of power-ups that give different abilities beyond speed would be interesting -- shield and attack power ups could change the gameplay dynamics in an interesting way. It would probably be a little bit less running away, though the frequency of when different power up types spawn could be changed to make the game feel more offensive or defensive.

Tiny Dentist by JoshuaJumbles 2017-05-14T23:25:24Z

Neat idea for a game. I think more of a "floaty" feel for the controls would be nice, but I like games with a lot of air time (ie - Tee Worlds, with the grappling keeping you up in the air for a long time).

The art style is great, the giant makes me think of a sock puppet.

Den by La mecanique du plastique 2017-05-16T07:43:30Z

So much bloodshed! Love the art style, its a fun game idea. I got the feeling of being a creature that had been woken up after a long slumber and was bewildered and confused about all the tiny little things that are running around making screeching noises. More puzzles from the beginning would be a good enhancement.

Small Worlds by Damien Remars 2017-05-14T23:45:14Z

The planetary glow is a nice effect. Gameplay felt like it was lacking, but hey, 48 hours isn't much time. I didn't really get the jumping mechanic at first, since it seems like you need to hold the jump button down to jump higher, then the jump happens when you release the key; some form of "jump power gauge" (sorry if you had one that I just missed) that appears under the character would help a lot with figuring out how the jumping mechanic works and for the visual feedback that pressing the jump key is doing something. Also, the character reminds me of Adipose from Dr. Who.
