LD46 — Keep it alive

WAVER by Skyeward 2020-04-21T23:06:26Z

One of my favorites from the Jam. The UI and transitions are super clean. The gameplay concept is really cool. I'm a decent typist and it was surprisingly challenging to track the letters I was supposed to type; it would take some practice. The sound effects are good. I loved the wrinkles in the gameplay -- catching the swag and the fan cams were fun and mixed things up a bit. The "tutorial" was just right. Great stuff.

Of The Dark by cogcomp 2020-04-20T17:28:50Z

Trippy visuals! A lot of effort was put into the world building here, which is cool. The gameplay is deep enough to where I felt overwhelmed, but that's not inherently a bad thing; I'd just need to spend more time on it. Good atmosphere and applicable to the theme. Thumbs up.

pod by irwatts 2020-04-20T17:20:33Z

Neat concept. The gameplay boils down to setting up a program to make your bot do what you want, which is cool. The physics can get pretty wonky if you crank things up suddenly. Music fits well. Thumbs up!

The Blobbysitter by jbasinger 2020-04-21T23:36:24Z

I'm a sucker for jam games with voice SFX. The gameplay was interesting with the way the blobs would interact. I'd have liked it to be a little slower so I could get a handle on the complex relationships among the blobs. The auto-generated names automatically made me care about them. Thumbs up.

Isle of Light by Lexi89 2020-04-22T18:19:16Z

Being stranded on a small island is a really neat take on a survival game. The music was chill and the actions were simple but well-balanced. I lived for a decent period of time then died of hunger. Nice game!

Chaos & Order by scottgoldsmith 2020-04-20T05:31:03Z

It's tough to make a simulated board game in 48 hours! I appreciate what you tried here. Neat ideas.

Majestic X by hhsaez 2020-04-20T22:57:42Z

I legitimately liked this a lot. I played for about 15 minutes before I finally got good enough to beat the enemy. The dynamic camera was the best part; really well done. The concept is great: it feels like an arcadey Dark Souls with a Virtual On vibe with a pinch of Punch-Out or Shadow of the Colossus. It looks like it'd be right at home on Sega Saturn. It would have benefited from some sound, but overall it's really cool. Great world-building too. One of my favorites so far.

Fell Out Survival by talslain 2020-04-20T22:22:15Z

I liked the idea of managing the solar resources in a bunker. The mirror and shadow were my favorite visuals. I wish I could run without having to keep holding down shift, and your return-to-menu button doesn't seem to work. The hand cursor is a nice touch! Overall, thumbs up!

Tunnel Vision by Avi 2020-04-20T06:28:17Z

Any chance of a Windows build? I'll come back and play it if so.

Parvus Anoplolepis gracilipes by Sode 2020-04-20T05:52:57Z

Neat use of the theme. The objective of the game was fairly clear, and the concept of controlling an ant in that way is interesting. There are some bugs (get it?), but it's a good attempt. Keep going!

Keep it alive by Wikers 2020-04-20T05:56:51Z

Good drawings of the characters. The particle effects were a nice touch. The player can die very quickly, but it's also very quick to restart. I would have liked to have some audio.

Amadiro by Dani Desa 2020-04-21T22:42:24Z

I like this! Endless Q*Bert, which could actually be better than the original. Good concept, colorful presentation, and neat power ups. The thing I desperately wanted most was the ability to jump back up, whether to get out of a sticky situation or to get risky/greedy and try to grab a goodie that I missed. I could see this being on the App store with a little polish. Overall good job.

Garden Guardian by LeYamez 2020-04-20T16:38:16Z

Good job applying the theme to the tower defense genre. It seems like I could win pretty easily with a single flower, and I would have like to have some audio. Good attempt! 48 hours is not a lot of time :)

ALL CAPS: The Incident at Puppy Canyon by KyMakesGames 2020-04-20T05:34:21Z

@curiouslycory Now that's edutainment! Thanks for playin' :)

ALL CAPS: The Incident at Puppy Canyon by KyMakesGames 2020-04-20T06:22:23Z

@martintale You shouldn't have to hold shift to type. Was the input not registering unless you were holding shift?

ALL CAPS: The Incident at Puppy Canyon by KyMakesGames 2020-04-20T14:48:18Z

@avi [Shakes fist at Meryl Streep]

ALL CAPS: The Incident at Puppy Canyon by KyMakesGames 2020-04-21T17:28:33Z

@haoro Thanks a ton for playing and for mentioning the hyphen character. I had no idea that different keyboards would recognize those characters differently! The things one learns when developing a typing game :)

Circuit in Distress by LyghtningWither 2020-04-20T17:06:21Z

Interesting twist on the theme. I found the gameplay pretty straightforward after initially reading the instructions. I liked trying to annoy people with the loud fans :) Being graded on "time alive" seemed confusing; a lower score is better, no? I liked the sound effects. Thumbs up.

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-20T05:20:01Z

You're doing some interesting things with the limited input system in PICO-8. Not having a dedicated button to crack rocks is brilliant. The gameplay is neat. The objective isn't foolproof, but your instructions are clear. Plus PICO-8 development is foreign to many; extra difficulty points!

(Oh, and I like playing in-browser!)

The Cause by enderr42 2020-04-20T22:36:37Z

Cool design and seems to have a good balance. The visual style of the cards and gameplay screen are nice. As you said, audio would go a long way. It's got a good core system, so thumbs up!

Joe, the balance by Gonzo13 2020-04-20T21:33:46Z

Really fun game loop. I played it around 20 times. The quick death-restart sequence makes it addictive in a good way. I didn't hear any audio? That would've boosted my playtime. 48 hours isn't enough! :)

Unique and challenging game. Thumbs up!

Wave Teaches Typing by Mush 2020-04-21T22:55:54Z

There's a lot of good stuff here. The concept is neat and it's pleasing when you get the inputs right. The pixel art is simple but clean and fits nicely together. The SFX are likewise simple but clean and pleasant. Keeping the wave alive is a good use of the theme. It's lighthearted and pretty innovative. Nothing bad to say about what's here; I'd play this again if you continued to improve upon what's here. Nice!

Windy The Indie by Douwe_Ravers 2020-04-20T21:53:44Z

Played the HTML build for about five minutes and didn't die. I didn't notice any game-breaking bugs, which is good. I really enjoyed the mouth sounds and bonus points for the animated title screen. I think some people might find the subject matter questionable. Overall though it fits the theme and is a complete LD game.

Keeper of the Flame by Elbapotsnugg 2020-04-20T22:07:19Z

Played it five or six times; it's challenging! Good ambiance and interesting world. The gameplay is similar to Kingdom Two Crowns. I would have liked more visual/audio feedback on my actions. Good music. Overall thumbs up!

The IT by troll_hunterX 2020-04-20T05:41:07Z

It took me a while to figure out how to eat things; you have to be standing in a specific spot next to the item. The visual style is neat — it reminds me of Minit. I felt like the difficulty was a bit punishing and the game over sound effect was harsh. There's something understated and charming here though!

Dog Walk Danger by Patrick1 2020-04-20T22:30:08Z

This is what I like. You had me at the name Cornelius. He's a cube and it made me smile! When he fell in the lava I was as devastated as Tom Hanks when he lost Wilson in the movie Cast Away.

A really fun little game! One of my favorites so far.

Keep it Alive by kadams 2020-04-20T21:43:12Z

I like this. The tutorial had a really good flow to it and I felt comfortable with the mechanics by the time the real game started. I made it through one section of the dungeon but I wasn't sure what the squares and circles were for? I'd also suggest switching up the music a bit. I thought the shower in the bathroom was great :)

Overall thumbs up!

(Tip: Upload a cover image so you get more plays!)

TimeSlayer TM by GoblinQueen 2020-04-20T03:37:04Z

Based on true events.

An original idea with unique gameplay and good visuals. 10/10 would play again. If there was a high-score mode I could see myself playing it for longer than is reasonable.

Stay Frausty by GameDoodles 2020-04-20T06:09:51Z

I really like how Frausty leans when he moves; his eyeballs also make him feel dynamic. The "refill" sound effect and animation is satisfying. I am overjoyed with the scene transitions. And the character creation... that's some Mass Effect stuff.

I lived 46 years before my soul was claimed.

I'm Coming To Get My Liver by phixnay 2020-04-20T05:47:01Z

First, I weirdly love good punctuation, and boy you got it. Kudos.

Second, it's a cool little story. Gave me some "In a Dark, Dark Room" vibes. Short, sweet, and to the point. Enjoyed it!

BUBBLE BOY by NEKORUMA 2020-04-20T23:05:03Z

I like how you took a typically slow-paced pet simulator and made it play quicker. The whole style is great; my favorite animation (other than death) was the bathtub. The music was really good too. My only critique is that it seems unloseable if you play quick enough, but it's hard to balance everything in 48 hours! Great job. Thumbs up!

Overthrone by Phibian 2020-04-20T05:32:55Z

An action tower defense game — neat! Controls are snappy. I got knocked outside of the play area once. Good presentation. Thumbs up.

Farmgevity by Zalop 2020-04-20T16:51:41Z

I liked this! I liked juggling the multiple gameplay elements: growing, fighting, feeding, harvesting. I played it twice and on the second attempt I realized the enemies were chopping down my crops! I would have liked some audio, but it's hard to do it all in 48 hours. Thumbs up overall!

LD49 — Unstable

Occult Academy by homeworld 2021-10-17T19:33:45Z

Lots of depth to the gameplay here. Visuals were nicely done and the enemy death effect was satisfying. A few rough edges here and there but to be expected with any jam game. Really liked this one!

Cowabunga by Sestren 2021-10-17T19:44:55Z

It's always interesting when there's a risk/reward to your resource usage. I thought the milk usage for jump/health/ammo was a nice design. Gamepad support worked well and bonus points for using PICO-8. I saved the city in the end. Well done!

Wobbly Waiter by CG_Fred 2021-10-17T18:46:57Z

I loved the character rig and mouth sounds always get bonus points from me!

THE COVID RACE by Aarre Entertainment 2021-10-17T18:43:16Z

I always find it interesting when procedural generation incorporates real-world data, so kudos! The graphical filters were neat and the music was fitting. Ultimately I died on a particularly sharp point that split my front and rear wheels

Wobble Waddle! by Gen Liu 2021-10-07T16:37:21Z

Inject this into my veins. The characters are fantastic and the procedural walking is so charming. A real gem.

OUR ANCIENT TRADITION by FranVadillo 2021-10-17T18:56:16Z

Loved the presentation, and the sacrifice-a-virgin card was a funny touch. It took me a few tries to pick up the fact that balance was the objective of the game, but after that everything clicked. Well done!

JUNK NUNS by KyMakesGames 2021-10-05T15:29:04Z

@the-crane At the menu screen, click the level icon to start the game

Pale Moon Shone by ditam 2021-10-17T19:27:35Z

Good ambiance in this one. I got pretty drunk, so I felt like a progressed a good bit! The pacing was nice and slow, which I think achieved what the makers set out to do. The music was fitting too. Well done!

Stable Meltdown by EvilScotsman 2021-10-18T16:19:22Z

This is what I want out of a jam game, and my favorite so far. The character art is fire emoji and the music is a bop. The gameplay is silly fun. Great stuff.

Beff Jezos: Time Shift Manager by Sine Nomine 2021-10-17T19:17:08Z

Figuring out the dynamic of the last stage was a cool moment. There's some nice depth with the gameplay here!

Defence Extraction by Random Ideation Studios 2021-10-18T16:09:24Z

There is a really fun idea here, and I haven't played anything like it before. I thought the tutorial was just the right amount of information and the visual effects were nicely done. Lasted for 3 minutes before a rock knocked the iron off the platform!

Unstabrick Maze by Moonblast 2021-10-17T19:38:14Z

I haven't played anything quite like this before — cool! I made it to level 8 (the fast enemies could get pretty tough). Good job!

Turbulences by Emparans 2021-10-17T19:03:22Z

Made it 82 seconds :) The interplay between throttle and roll was a lot of fun to balance. It took me a few tries to learn that right-mouse was the main interaction, but after that I became an amazing pilot

LD52 — Harvest

Froot Processor by Joel Davis 2023-01-09T04:19:35Z

Nicely-designed PICO-8 game! Lots of different wrinkles in the gameplay to give the player plenty of things to consider when trying to optimize their fruit-processing business. It took me a couple of rounds to discover that pressing down let me peek at the Buyers, which I did often after that. The music loop is pleasant and the visuals are charming. Nicely done.

High score: 188

'Arr-vest by ThePelranthean 2023-01-10T02:24:04Z

I clicked so much I think I shivered my own timbers. Got 94 kills in the process. I liked that there wasn't a separate upgrade phase and I could upgrade during the action. I did have some trouble getting more than 20 fps on my 750 Ti, but it was the price I had to pay to get all that pirate booty.

Grim Harvest by automatonvx 2023-01-13T02:17:31Z

My ears really enjoyed the music, especially the title screen. The gameplay and randomly-generated levels were solid! I found some of the text a little small to read but that didn't stop me from munching on grave stuff for 3 nights.

Fallowtide by Jeremy Ryan 2023-01-12T03:23:40Z

So glad I played this one. Incredible polish, great vibe, and some real juice in the interactions. The nesting-triangles-into-each-other mechanic reminds me of a pattern-making toy I enjoyed as a kid. A small change that I think could make an impact: the cards are a little too hidden while in your hand and not highlighted; I'd love to easily see the full patterns so I could strategize without hovering over each one.

!>My favorite moment was discovering how the goat works, and I'm so glad you chose not to explain it to the player beforehand. (Idk why spoilers also look like quotes, but I didn't want to call out the goats for anyone else!)

Great game.

Drillydown by Peter Jonsson 2023-01-09T04:44:08Z

Solid puzzle mechanic here and the extra polish on the light/shadow cone graphical treatment was neat. Level 6 took me a bunch of tries (tired Compo brain here I guess :P) and my step counter climbed pretty rapidly. I didn't think the audio was very fitting, but that's understandable given the constraints of the weekend. (I got the web build to play just fine.) Thumbs up overall!

Mow Rider Deluxe by JavaSaurus 2023-01-11T21:50:52Z

Best box art of the compo. I could spend a lot of time optimizing my strategy to score well in a game like this, and the need to drop off you payload gives you something extra to think about. Nice touches all-around: professional voice acting, settings menu, and cheats!

Tactile Harvest by JakobTheQuizGuy 2023-01-09T01:27:00Z

This is truly something else in the best way. I was most surprised by how much I enjoyed the visuals when seeing them in motion. The mechanics are super solid. And while I found myself wishing for a quick-turn action at first, I think mastering the dash mechanic could give me the agility I'm looking for.

High score: 205 seconds

The Harvest Inspector by John Gabriel 2023-01-11T21:08:04Z

This is the most polished compo game I've played for LD52. High-quality all around. I genuinely enjoyed the timer, which increased the urgency/intensity of the matter at hand (though I personally could have used a bit more time for my first playthrough). The randomized elements in the prompts were a must for replayability, so kudos for implementing that too!

Grub Grab by ComicSans 2023-01-10T01:28:50Z

This was really something — I've never seen anything quite like the mechanic and visual presentation of having the guy in the background throw stuff to a second character in the foreground. Really neat. Only issue I had was I didn't hear any music.

Cat Crop Collector by Riesyeti 2023-01-10T02:07:07Z

This has the right amount of creepy factor. Even though I could only reload once, it didn't stop me from stopping the cats from stopping me harvest all the things. Good stuff.

Night of the Zombie Chickens by Jonqs 2023-01-10T01:20:17Z

I'm a sucker for pixelated 3D visuals so I found the art in the game pretty darn charming (I especially enjoyed the feathers on running over the chickens.) I had a bit of a hard time reading the text on the upgrade screen and I did notice the lag you mentioned on launch. Really enjoyed it overall!

Corntacular Spectacular by Icoso 2023-01-14T02:01:25Z

This is the most eye-catching and ear-wormy presentation of the Compo. Everything is so clean and bubbly and polished in its own way. Top marks.

Killed me some 61 farmers. I would have liked to see some extra spin on the gameplay, but that can be hard in 48 hours (I'm one to talk). Overall I really enjoyed this one.

Combine Harvester: Time Attack! by Christian Zommerfelds 2023-01-09T04:57:06Z

There's something innately satisfying about this kind of task, so I really like the core interaction. The turning radius of the combine also makes it fun to try to optimize your route. I found the second level to be pretty tough and was a bit confused as to why nothing happened when I reached 100% completion (I think it was because I didn't complete it in time). Thanks for sharing!

Harvest Skin by mikyokyuji 2023-01-14T02:07:43Z

What a unique experience. The interaction, sound effects, and behavior of the fish come together to make something that feels a little more visceral than expected. Nicely done.

Extreme Apple Picking by profundity 2023-01-09T04:33:00Z

If there was a sandbox game where the only thing the player character could do is shake things like this I would play the heck out of it. The core action here is really satisfying and I'd love more things to do in the environment. I picked 35 apples in an extreme fashion.

They Are Growing by ADIS 2023-01-14T01:49:50Z

I don't usually get too creeped out by games, but this one got to me. Strikingly unsettling in my opinion. I had a lot of difficulty getting past round 2, so I didn't get to see too much of the game, but I played it six or seven times. You achieved quite the mood with this game.

Crop Carnage by ManchmalScott 2023-01-11T21:30:28Z

I'm a big fan of the risk/reward dynamic in deciding whether to plant crops or use them for weapons, so good job. I had some trouble accessing the shop in the web version but still had fun. The text of the one-liners when you equipped weapons was a nice touch :)

Tractor Tony's Pro Reaper by Fabian Denter 2023-01-14T02:17:15Z

The world needs these kinds of jam games. As a big fan of the original THPS, great job at recreating some of the soul of that game with the music/presentation. And that CRT glare is crucial and has not gone unnoticed. My $0.02 is that the screen filter makes a jam submission like this extra jammy and I like it.

foodie farmer by CheeseHead games 2023-01-11T22:10:02Z

The crossbow twang sound had a really satisfying bass note to it, so I found it fun to shoot. I'd love to see a little more depth in the gameplay, but what's here is solid, especially considering the time constraints of the compo. High scores: Easy 901, Hard 126
