LD46 — Keep it alive

Burned by the Poi by Risist 2020-04-25T23:46:32Z

Great game! I'm not sure the mouse buttons were working for me though. The middle mouse button performed a dash forward when I pressed it in, however both left and right mouse buttons didn't seem to do anything. I was still able to kill monsters, though I had to walk up to them or move back and forth quickly to get my poi flinging at them.

I think the poi mechanic is a really good idea with a lot of potential, though the implementation could use a lot of fine-tuning and polishing.

The graphics were top-notch. Great job on the lighting, art, animation, and mood of the whole scene. In fact this is my first 5 star rating in graphics so far!

Ninja and Mouse by TrampolineTales 2020-04-20T04:18:54Z

I really enjoyed that game! The font effects were really cool. I liked how all of the text was highlighted. Very nice looking.

The left-and-right moving controls felt a bit odd, like maybe too floaty. I did get used to it pretty fast though so maybe that's not a huge problem.

Good game!

Anibun Help Me! by aeveis 2020-04-21T16:06:56Z

That was adorable and the art was so on point. I love the atmosphere, effects, and smoothness to everything. Though in its current state it's not all that fun yet. This has the potential to be a very fun game with more work put into varying the anibun's abilities and keeping them all together as a cohesive group with better AI.

For Seraphina by Herrybiscuit 2020-04-24T18:09:14Z

Hit me hard. I read every single gravestone in the graveyard looking for "Seraphina" but didn't find one.

One note about gameplay: I wasn't able to immerse myself at the beginning because I was mashing my keyboard wildly trying to interact with things. It should be "click" not "e" in my opinion. Or at least you should list that control somewhere.

Keep the Dreams Alive by SpaceWizardJ 2020-04-20T05:29:39Z

I really love those particle effects and the little screenbounces. Great game feel and atmosphere. Also the use of various kinds of guns was well done. Bravo!

Keep Boner Alive by rubyleehs 2020-04-20T03:49:10Z

I played this with my girlfriend. We grew closer as a couple. 3.5/5

Post-Apocalyptic Funk-Based Kicking Simulator by Gnarkill 2020-04-20T14:48:57Z

That was awesome for a first game jam! It felt so polished. The graphics were playful and the theme usage was so clever. I really enjoyed it!

Good music and good sound effects!

Penguin March by ilPrinny 2020-04-20T04:41:56Z

I love this! I sent it over to my penguin loving friend and they said they're into it.

It was nice, because it was super easy(from my perspective) and seemed to almost guarantee a win and satisfaction at the end. Very different from my very hard game haha.

The penguins were also super cute and seemed to drive home the emotional connection. I liked the little interactions like clicking on the penguins to make them puff up.

One suggestion I'd have is to perhaps add a clicking-type interaction to the game. Click on the penguins so they puff up, and maybe that could add moral over time? I like the idea of making it not 90% RNG. Maybe a little more interaction with consequences.

Great game overall though goodjob!

My Friend Phil by Conroy 2020-04-24T18:31:04Z

That was awesome! Well polished, good art, nice effects, and very interesting mechanic that I like quite a lot. I started out feeling like it would be my first 5/5 overall game rating, but by the end something about it all wasn't quite hitting home. I think it's summed up well from others here though. Controls aren't the best, and the level design can be very awkward at times.

Kipthulhulhive! by Bruce 2020-04-21T18:31:43Z

It's so beautiful! Can't wait to see it finished! I lold at the dialogue. Good job so far!

Wave Machine by Sciman101 2020-04-24T18:17:12Z

Awesom3! That was an aesthetic treat! Love the colors, animation, energy, and flooowww. Got 84% accuracy on my first try. Not too shabby huh.

I'd play this game a lot more if there were more levels. A "survival" mode would be fun too. One in which you have a life bar that goes down when you get an EH and up when you get a GREAT!

I'm curious about something. Is each colored individual a different sprite, or did you use a Godot feature to programmatically recolor them?

Have Mercy by Stefan Jovanovic 2020-04-20T15:21:03Z

Nice! I enjoyed the first level of that, though I'm not sure what was going on with the second level. If I did half of either of the goblin's hp they would fall down and I'd lose. That didn't seem right. They still had 8 hp left.

I liked the core of this game a lot. It feels like something that could really be built upon into a real game. When I saw that the second level goblin also had a healer I started to feel like there was a good game happening here. I would make the "Character's turn" messages shorter though. I'm too impatient for them haha.

Sound effects could also add a lot to bringing this game to life!

Be Cool or Die by Asier 2020-04-20T15:01:44Z

That was fun! I found myself laughing out loud after being mauled by a bear.

STEM by Kaleido 2020-04-20T15:40:58Z

The first 10 minutes of playing this game made me think it was my favorite game I've played so far this jam, though the gameplay became predictably monotonous after that. I'm sure you would have added enemies and more cell types if you had more time, and that would make this game so great.

I love the game mechanic of the red blood cells acting as sorts of workers, like in typical Blizzard RTS(Starcraft, warcraft). Except instead of delivering gold on their route, they deliver the actual ability to move at all. That's a very interesting mechanic. I'd like to see that mechanic expanded on in a real time strategy game where you control an army rather than one stem cell. That could be super cool.

Great game! GJ!

AliveClicker by RastaGrzywa 2020-04-20T04:29:58Z

That was very abstract. It was interesting to see the critter be an amalgamation of cubes. And the workers were literally cubes that fell from the sky. I liked that a lot.

Lack of sound is an issue. This could be so much better with audio.

I think I found a few bugs while playing. The UPGRADES panel would never open fully for me so I don't think I can get upgrades. Also, the "amount" and "power" buttons don't seem to be functional.

I'm a weirdy in that typos and odd formatting bugs me. The spelling, grammar and odd capitalization threw me for a spin in the startup. It felt unprofessional in that way.

Overall it felt innovative, but lacking a lot of needed polish.

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-20T04:44:33Z

@mickeyo Thanks for the comment! That's true. I think it's not obvious that you're supposed to push the bbys around. It's all about pushing them to food and away from monsters.

I edited the description to make that more clear.

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-20T05:18:20Z

@dandala88

Definitely not an easy game! I'd like to finish it and add many more mechanics so it's more beatable in the future.

@mikesalyh Glad you enjoyed! I was overjoyed to hear you beat the first level. I know it's hard, but it makes me happy hearing people are putting the effort in to get that far.

@mdf9 Thanks for the heads up! I updated the page to reflect that : )

@theseusinabottle Thanks for the comment! Would love to have a bit higher resolution. My first time devving at such low-res and it's been an interesting challenge to get all of the BBY's accessories to look okay at such low res.

@mbc Loving those ideas! I'll definitely consider them for future edits to the game. Also I want to make the accessories each have unique boosting effects on the bbys.

@retti01 Yeah it's a little weird! Glad you enjoyed :)

@maxflav haha yeah it's weird at first! Glad you found it easy enough :)

@inventivum-games Thanks for the suggestion! Do you think you should do more damage to the rocks? You don't do any damage to the monsters btw! They lose life automatically. They're on a timer. Maybe that's not obvious enough.

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-20T14:38:56Z

@kythehuman

So glad you enjoyed! Thank you for the controls comment! I think it's nice being able to basically play an entire game with only the arrow keys.

@mhykah

Thanks! Hope to make it more beatable in the future!

@Anonymous

You're so on point about the narrator! I'm excited to add more levels, and make them more beatable. That narrator definitely has something schemy up their sleaves!

@sayumeki

Lol! That would be an interesting feature actually. If the monsters could eat the food instead of a baby. I like it!

@tupto

Glad you enjoyed the music! :) It's stuck in my head as well I think I'm going to make the monsters have no collision with you so that you can save them from getting the bby away.

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-24T18:39:00Z

@sciman101 Thanks for playing! Haha I know it's super hard! I've been working hard on a finalized version with a lot more added to it, and 4 levels with a boss fight. The first level will be much easier and yes, the monsters won't collide with the bbys or the player anymore! : )

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-24T23:56:14Z

@god-colo Thanks so much for the kind words! Yeah, I made all of the assets, including the music, in pico-8 itself!

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-04-30T14:28:23Z

@aeveis

Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate you spending so much time on it! I've made a lot of changes, fixed the difficulty curve massively, fixed the mechanics(like getting stuck on rocks), and added more levels and story in a more recent version: https://lambdanaut.itch.io/bbys

You may find it much more enjoyable : )

@natasza Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed :D

@notan-lemon Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for playing : )

BBYS by Lambdanaut 2020-05-15T14:30:20Z

@aeveis Holy shit!! I was so excited to hear someone besides my girlfriend beat the game. Awesome! Thank you so much for playing and for your comments.

@notan-lemon thanks for re-rating! I made sure all of the links available from ldjam point to the jam version when you left that comment.

@neontropics Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the experience : )

@deathstorm PICO8 kicks ass! I love it! Thank you for the kind words my friend.

Keep chicks alive! by Sleeping Panda Games 2020-04-22T19:27:47Z

Oh woot that was fun! It kept me from doing my work for a good 20 minutes. You did a great job taking a simple root concept and implementing it in new and exciting puzzly ways in all 6 levels. The only negative thing about this game is that it's not that most innovative, but who the hell cares when it's so well implemented.

Great job 4 stars! Screen Shot 2020-04-22 at 3.25.13 PM.png

That was so relaxing. very enjoy much good

GORID-19 by BeaverGames 2020-04-21T18:44:36Z

Super innovative! I love the idea of taking those viral simulators and turning them into a game where you have to quarantine the population. You did a great job with this one.

A fifth virus that's harder than both the ebola and covid ones combined would be great. I found this game was too easy once I got the hang of it, and I never lost once, or even got close to it after the first level.

The game could use sound effects as well as a feedback indicator to know if tests were successful or not.

The IT by troll_hunterX 2020-04-20T05:56:59Z

It reminded me of Minit a bit. It felt way too hard though, unnecessarily so. My primary difficulty was that 50% of the time I'd press the correct key in the correct spot, and it wouldn't work. Picking items up was particularly iffy. I couldn't figure out why sometimes I could pick the apples up and sometimes I couldn't.

If the beast you're protecting had a bit more life that might be helpful too. More time to explore and understand the game. I get that you're supposed to be time and health constrained, but that was a bit too much.

I found that I could keep him alive if I just kept running to the apples and back, but then I'd miss an apple because I'd drop it on him rather than feeding it to him and I'd be back to 1 health again.

Combining the controls could really improve the gameplay in a lot of ways. I think you can combine grab/drop pretty easily. Make it impossible to drop manually, but make it so you automatically drop what you're carrying when you pick something else up. That would free up a button and make the controls more wieldly.

What I did like about this game though though, was the atmosphere and Zelda-esque design. That was super cool and has potential to be a very interesting game aesthetically. I felt like I was literally in the starter stop of the original NES Zelda... except everything was much darker.

Whiny Slime by HeyNetters 2020-04-22T22:58:23Z

Great game! Loved the character talking. The art was really good for pico8, and I really liked the pixel start effect in the splash screen. I'd say that you should do away with walking though, and make running be the default.

Chabones Argentinos bizarre adventure by Juan Ignacio Ranedo 2020-04-24T17:40:52Z

I think I just saved Argentina from a giant fish lady.

Love the wackyness.

Guns N' Violets by Wallaby 2020-04-26T00:11:01Z

Really awesome game! Loved it. At first I felt like it was incredibly difficult.. too difficult, but I adjusted quickly, and the shop items were incredibly addictive.

The pacing was well done, and the enemy variation was good for a jam game. Music also was nice.

Most addictive jam game I've played so far this year so gj!

Burning Bright by Aimainiac 2020-04-24T18:37:04Z

Great game~! Very fun! Got to level 4! I'm amazed you got so many extra modes in there right off the bad.

Mothership by Wet_Band-Aid 2020-04-24T17:58:45Z

Awesome game! I was stoked by how far I was getting and then lost right before the 3star difficult level. It REALLY ramped up in difficulty.

Keep IT Alive by bjl 2020-04-20T04:09:42Z

I enjoyed that more than I expected! It was incredibly relaxing. I went into a complete trance while playing. Not stressful at all.

I feel like I could go for hours without losing, which may or may not be a good thing. I wonder what it would be like if that timer got shorter for each IT you found. In that way you would have to go faster and faster until you were at your limit.

Overall it was a fun, but very simple experience. A nice idea.

Genki by GOD COLO 2020-04-24T17:48:22Z

RAD! I think you can cheat the system by putting a paperweight on an arrow key and going out for lunch though by the time you got back your computer would melt down.
