Well, it's not an easy game. I like the game boy color throwback graphics, it's just a little bit too tedious to have fun with. I did really like the visual and sound design for nostalgic reasons.

mdf9 2020-04-20 04:39

It's super fun and challenging, and the art is adorable.By the way, your itch page says the game is not designed to run on mobile but it plays perfectly fine on my android so you might want to update that.

mickeyo 2020-04-20 04:41

I like the music. I don't really understand how to keep the monsters from eating them, though.

stolen-biscuit 2020-04-20 04:43

Very challenging. Great art style. Took me a while to understand that I have to keep hitting rocks to get food out, and also how to deal with monsters (didn't realise I just have to keep baby away). Good job!

mikesalyh 2020-04-20 04:43

This is hard! But it's a lot of fun - I got up to 2 BBYs. Pushing them around is a fun mechanic, and I liked balancing between harvesting food and defending the BBYs.

mbc 2020-04-20 04:44

I like the rules of the game here - different BBY colors to manage based on enemy types and a kind of area-control resource management. I wasn't sure what the clothing items did or if they were just cosmetic, they were nice to have though. I would appreciate some way to interact with enemies or the environment more - maybe disabling an enemy or being able to build temporary rocks of my own to block something off.

lambdanaut 2020-04-20 04:44

@mickeyo Thanks for the comment! That's true. I think it's not obvious that you're supposed to push the bbys around. It's all about pushing them to food and away from monsters.

I edited the description to make that more clear.

theseusinabottle 2020-04-20 04:48

I am always a sucker for the graphical styling of the PICO-8 fantasy console. As is to be expected from a PICO-8 game you had nice sound effects although I did notice that the music seemed to stop for a brief period. Also your graphics as previously mentioned are really nice. I wish the resolution of the game had been a little bigger but I believe that is a limit on the PICO-8 side of things not a thing you had a choice in so I won't knock you for it.

james-shipp 2020-04-20 04:48

Very interesting concept! It took me a sec to realize I was supposed to push the bby towards the food, wish I see by the comments is a common thread hahah. Really liked the graphics and soundtrack, I think that's something most people didn't have time to get to. I thought that you were supposed to defend the bby by attacking the enemies, so my critical feedback would be to make the gameplay a bit more clear in terms of how to do things. Great job on the presentation!

mickeyo 2020-04-20 04:49

@lambdanaut ohhhh that makes so much more sense. I thought I was supposed to damage the enemies by running into them lol

lectvs 2020-04-20 04:49

Neat concept! Pretty challenging but fun once I got the hang of the controls. Love the art style and the music!

retti01 2020-04-20 04:49

Very cool idea. Takes a little bit time to learn the mecanism. I like it.

maxflav 2020-04-20 04:49

Took me a while to realize I had to *push* the BBYs out of the way XD Game was much easier once I understood that. They are so cute!

inventivum-games 2020-04-20 04:49

The game seems way to hard, I feel like you should much more damage

lambdanaut 2020-04-20 05:18

@dandala88

Definitely not an easy game! I'd like to finish it and add many more mechanics so it's more beatable in the future.

@mikesalyh Glad you enjoyed! I was overjoyed to hear you beat the first level. I know it's hard, but it makes me happy hearing people are putting the effort in to get that far.

@mdf9 Thanks for the heads up! I updated the page to reflect that : )

@theseusinabottle Thanks for the comment! Would love to have a bit higher resolution. My first time devving at such low-res and it's been an interesting challenge to get all of the BBY's accessories to look okay at such low res.

@mbc Loving those ideas! I'll definitely consider them for future edits to the game. Also I want to make the accessories each have unique boosting effects on the bbys.

@retti01 Yeah it's a little weird! Glad you enjoyed :)

@maxflav haha yeah it's weird at first! Glad you found it easy enough :)

@inventivum-games Thanks for the suggestion! Do you think you should do more damage to the rocks? You don't do any damage to the monsters btw! They lose life automatically. They're on a timer. Maybe that's not obvious enough.

kymakesgames 2020-04-20 05:20

You're doing some interesting things with the limited input system in PICO-8. Not having a dedicated button to crack rocks is brilliant. The gameplay is neat. The objective isn't foolproof, but your instructions are clear. Plus PICO-8 development is foreign to many; extra difficulty points!

(Oh, and I like playing in-browser!)

mhykah 2020-04-20 05:31

Hard but interesting game! Great job!

2020-04-20 06:12

Loved the graphics and audio, really made me think of tamagotchis. Its hard, but that just made me really have to think about what rocks do I break and where do I leave my bbys, I only got to level 2 though xD. The narrator from what ive seen from level 2 defiently seems shady, like secretly evil. The "oh your baby is still alive huh" makes me think hes behind it all. haha, great entry!

sayumeki 2020-04-20 07:53

Nice PICO-8 work! The game is charming and has quite the difficulty curve - I had to keep training myself to not try to push the food to the monsters like all "here, eat this steak, not my bby!"

tupto 2020-04-20 11:39

Cool aesthetics and interesting but rather difficult gameplay. I've still got the song stuck in my head as I write this comment.

Don't let your bbys get trapped between two monsters - it won't end well.

lambdanaut 2020-04-20 14:38

@kythehuman

So glad you enjoyed! Thank you for the controls comment! I think it's nice being able to basically play an entire game with only the arrow keys.

@mhykah

Thanks! Hope to make it more beatable in the future!

@Anonymous

You're so on point about the narrator! I'm excited to add more levels, and make them more beatable. That narrator definitely has something schemy up their sleaves!

@sayumeki

Lol! That would be an interesting feature actually. If the monsters could eat the food instead of a baby. I like it!

@tupto

Glad you enjoyed the music! :) It's stuck in my head as well I think I'm going to make the monsters have no collision with you so that you can save them from getting the bby away.

lazzydev72 2020-04-20 14:55

Well Done Thank You for telling me about the Review Nice game :v:

sockyman 2020-04-21 14:28

I really loved this game. The graphics and audio are great and the gameplay is fun and challenging. At first I couldn't figure out how to harvest food but I got that figured out by playing.

beavergames 2020-04-21 18:43

Amazing game! You should make it easier though. I had a little trouble keeping the monsters away, but I still like it. The visuals were also great! I liked the audio and everything was awesome.

stefan-jovanovic 2020-04-24 17:39

Nice concept. Really enjoyed the soundtrack. Well done!

sciman101 2020-04-24 18:37

Wow, I didn't realize you could turn anxiety into a video game For real, though, this was fun! Really challenging, too, I couldn't get past stage 1. Figuring out how to harvest food took a bit to figure out, but once I did it flowed a lot better. One minor complaint I do have, is once 2 or 3 of the spider guys got my bby, it was basically impossible to get them back, and it was ensured game over. Maybe if the player could pass through the monsters? Regardless, nice work!

lambdanaut 2020-04-24 18:39

@sciman101 Thanks for playing! Haha I know it's super hard! I've been working hard on a finalized version with a lot more added to it, and 4 levels with a boss fight. The first level will be much easier and yes, the monsters won't collide with the bbys or the player anymore! : )

god-colo 2020-04-24 18:59

That's the first PICO-8 game I'm playing for the jam! Glad to see that people still uses it! :smile: Did you make the sprite within PICO-8 itself? :thinking: I love the soundtrack! :smile: Also did I mention that I'm a big fan of your pixel art? :smile: Greato Jobu! :smile:

lambdanaut 2020-04-24 23:56

@god-colo Thanks so much for the kind words! Yeah, I made all of the assets, including the music, in pico-8 itself!

natasza 2020-04-26 00:45

Fun and challenging! I enjoyed trying to keep my bbys alive, which are just adorable. I like the mechanic of enemies dropping stuff. Some could help you, some not and the rest is just there being useless. :laughing: The soundtrack really stays with you after you finish playing. Nice game, great job!

notan-lemon 2020-04-26 11:15

This is fun. Though the game is hard and challenging, you can gradually master where to put babies to stay safe. I could beat the first 3 levels. I wish I could retry from the level where I failed to save the babies. Also I love the music and the graphics. Great job!

aeveis 2020-04-29 07:57

Overall a bit too hard for me. I got stuck on level two after dying like 6-7 times. I think some of it is it's very easy to get stuck on the rocks or not be able to get the bby out from the enemies. I liked the equipables the enemies dropped but not sure if they help with bby defense or anything. It'll be nice if I could also use the rocks as obstacles for the enemies as well, so that the more I break the harder it is to defend. I liked the dialogue with the faces in the game though. Nice job!

lambdanaut 2020-04-30 14:28

@aeveis

Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate you spending so much time on it! I've made a lot of changes, fixed the difficulty curve massively, fixed the mechanics(like getting stuck on rocks), and added more levels and story in a more recent version: https://lambdanaut.itch.io/bbys

You may find it much more enjoyable : )

@natasza Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed :D

@notan-lemon Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for playing : )

aeveis 2020-04-30 15:03

@lambdanaut I was able to beat it! Thanks for the changes, I liked the tweaks you made with the equips and making it easier to push.

notan-lemon 2020-04-30 15:44

~~Hey be careful! Adding new levels and story is against the rules. If you want to add new features you should make a separate game as a post-jam version.~~

Oops, I didn't notice the link IS a post-jam version. It seems I have rated your game by the post-jam version. I'll play the original version later. It might be better to have a description saying something like "this is a post-jam version" on the page, because I found your game via [this link](https://itch.io/games/tag-ludum-dare-46).

neontropics 2020-05-11 23:09

I like the graphics and audio a lot! The concept is nice but it's perhaps a bit too slow to get going.

deathstorm 2020-05-12 15:00

I love the Pico 8 Games every LudumDare and this time again. The Game is cool, the mechanics are fine and the Game in general is pretty Hard.

Well Done Good Job :)

lambdanaut 2020-05-15 14:30

@aeveis Holy shit!! I was so excited to hear someone besides my girlfriend beat the game. Awesome! Thank you so much for playing and for your comments.

@notan-lemon thanks for re-rating! I made sure all of the links available from ldjam point to the jam version when you left that comment.

@neontropics Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the experience : )

@deathstorm PICO8 kicks ass! I love it! Thank you for the kind words my friend.
