DAMN YOU CHICKEN !!!!

thedashdude 2020-04-20 20:39

Loved the fast music, really set the tone. Neat game, well executed. I think there could have been more interesting obstacles, but the ones used worked just fine.

hacktrout 2020-04-20 22:10

Great game with nice platforming mechanics!

sleeping-panda-games 2020-04-21 09:05

@siryakko that was very fun to follow your stream and see you struggle with the game at the first, haha ^^' thx for playing! gonna try yours right now (-:

@thedashdude tyvm for playing and your feedback. to be honest, I've done lots of sprites for the game, but unfortunately didn't find enough time this weekend to implement more mechanics. I really wish I could a 'thwomp' mechanic and a few enemies that move left/right, but I prefered to fix a few things and add the player score at the end first

@hacktrout thank you <3 this means so much <3

kevin-h 2020-04-21 09:53

I saw your game on discord as i said it's really pretty and the music is really cool. Good job!

louis-denizet 2020-04-21 10:43

I loved it, simple idea but great realisation, I laughed pretty hard when music started & the chicken mama is absolutely adorable ;)

chromaphase 2020-04-21 11:03

I'm a simple person, I see gameboy grahics = 5 ratings ;P nice mechanics and music

nikita-demidov 2020-04-21 23:14

Wow... I was really positively surprised by this game! I had fun playing it and I would be ready to play it for the rest of the day(and it's 1am where I live!). But you can finish the 4th level without even collecting the chicken, and when you complete it, the chicken just tps to the end. Also: since you didn't do the music you might have to opt yourself out of Audio.(I think) Overall, one of my favourite games this LD!

daniel-moreno 2020-04-22 06:45

Hey, great game! You're basically speedrunning this game all the time, haha. I like the graphics and music, I'm curious about the decision to use the Nokia restrictions on here. As others said, I would like to see some more obstacles and hazards, but I get this is a jam game and there's not a lot of time.

The only complain I have is that some numbers of the countdown aren't very readable, as the six. The screen resolution is quite small so I get the font must be very small, but maybe giving it more size as the countdown is important would be a good idea.

sludgekey 2020-04-22 16:49

I tried to avoid the first couple of grass sprites :'). Quickly realised my mistake when they caused me to jump in the real spikes. I had the lovely vibe of being offline and playing the dino jump game but then with some more content. Really nice vibes.

mads 2020-04-22 19:13

Great game! The music is on point, and i like the colours and graphics!

Feedback: Dont let the player start all over when the player dies, it becomes very annoying to go to the egg that many times. Also the moving platforms should be synchronised with the start time. If one started a bit off, the level was unbeatable. Also with a platformer as simple as this, the controls should be very tight and response, which i didnt feel like they were. Controls are difficult to get right tho.

dodormeur 2020-04-22 19:17

Nice game, a bit hard to know what kills you and what don't due to the low count of pixel. I like the fact that the level started by showing what mechanics to expect in the rest of the level, before you get the egg

lambdanaut 2020-04-22 19:27

Oh woot that was fun! It kept me from doing my work for a good 20 minutes. You did a great job taking a simple root concept and implementing it in new and exciting puzzly ways in all 6 levels. The only negative thing about this game is that it's not that most innovative, but who the hell cares when it's so well implemented.

Great job 4 stars! Screen Shot 2020-04-22 at 3.25.13 PM.png

sleeping-panda-games 2020-04-22 21:17

@kevin-h tyvm! <3

@louis-denizet when you think about it, this mama chicken is really lazy

@chromaphase haha, I truely understand what u mean ^^' thank you so much!

@nikita-demidov I'm still sorry that my game keeps you awake so late, haha ^^' What have you find here, lol. I tried it myself to see it. OMG! I simply forgot a few things in level 4.. xD I don't think I'm going to fix it since it doesn't really broke the game (hopefully), plus it is funny to see the eggs tps until his mama imo

Had a busy day today and I'm quite tired so I will answer to everyone properly tomorrow! Thank you for playing guys! <3

This game sent me into speedrun mode, trying it over and over until I got an almost perfect run. The graphics are simple, but the gameplay is fantastic. Variable jump height that feels right, music that made me want to go fast before I even noticed the timer, and excellent level design. I even tried to get some extra momentum from landing a jump on decline slopes, which I noticed would push me forward a bit right after I landed, but I'm not sure if that contributed much to my final result. And I obviously abused the level 4 bug, egg teleport! :D

speedrun.png

There was one falling platform that landed on the ground, and when I jumped on it again it would sit there and shake. There's also a bug with the music when you restart while it's playing: It keeps playing and overlaps itself when you get to the egg. I got about 4 of them playing at once when I was restarting trying to get a good run.

lt-farfetchd 2020-04-23 00:57

I loved your transitions between levels - that was really cool. The retro style was absolutely nailed in this one, so great work with that. My only complaint is probably that the movement feels a bit jittery when you're moving on stairs, and maybe that the game could have used a little more audio - maybe something at the start of each level would be nice? I would maybe tweak your font slightly as well, or perhaps just the spacing on the font, to increase readability.

Graphics, audio and gameplay combine really nicely to make it feel like a cohesive experience!

sleeping-panda-games 2020-04-24 20:27

@daniel-moreno Thank you for playing the game, Daniel! I decided to follow the Nokia 3310 restrictions because I couldn't participate to the last Nokia jam back in February (https://itch.io/jam/nokiajam2). I really wanted to participate so I thought it could be the right moment to try a Nokia 3310-like game for this Ludum Dare.

Yeah, the font is very tiny. It is a four pixels only font which isn't really easy to deal with. Especially with a 1bit game. I don't think I will work again on this game - I mean improve it - but yeah, if had more time I'd ofcourse use a higher font like 8 pixels so I could make it more readable.

Regarding the obstacles, as you said, I just ran out of time. I designed a couple more enemies and stuff that I didn't find time to implement sadly. Anyway I'm already quite satisfied that I get this result with just 16 hours of work. I really wanted to know what time exactly I spent on it so I tracked every minutes of my work here. That's still very motivating.

@sludgekey Really glad to read you had such a great time! Thank you for playing! I'm also a fan of this dino jump game, haha

@mads Thank you for playing! I understand that point about controls because I felt it as well. If I had more time, I'd have spend a bit more time on optimizing them. It is still a game of the offline/arcade area so I think it is quite okay to get that kind of hard controls. Even if I admit that in some cases behaviors are a bit weird, like when you walk on diagonal sprites for examples. S'ry about that again, really.. Lack of time. ^^'

@dodormeur Thank you for playing the game! I'm glad you talk about that because this is something very important to me. I mean to make players learn what they have to do or what will happen with intuitive experiences like that. I'm sorry I don't really know how to explain my point in English.. x) Regarding the low count of pixels.. I should probably remove a few decorative sprites because.. Yeah.. As you said, you're wondering the first time what it is or if there is any action related to it.

@lambdanaut You filled my heart with joy! Really glad you enjoyed the experience so far, and thank you also for sharing a screenshot of your score. GG!

wheffle 2020-04-24 22:10

At first I thought "hey, no audio, that's ok!" and then the music started up when I got to the egg, and it was so exciting, and I really appreciated that! It's the small things sometimes. My sole complaint is that moving right was "D" but moving left was "Q"... what the heck? I really enjoyed this though, great entry!

tom-robson 2020-04-24 23:17

Had a blast playing this! I'm sure it was designed this way, but I ended up finishing every level with a second to spare, so every single level clear felt like it was just through the skin of my teeth. And given how bad I am at platformers...

The music was great, the aesthetic was great, even the level design was great (I loved that you showed off the main gimmick in a level before getting the egg, great touch).

Definitely keep going on this, I could play this for hours.

inventivum-games 2020-04-24 23:55

this game is great, a perfect game for a ludum dare short, challenging and polished, far to many people (myself included) try to hard to make larger games and they never have the same level of polish.

sleeping-panda-games 2020-04-26 07:57

Hey, guys! I hope everyone is having a good Sunday morning here.

This comment to let people know that I have updated the game on Itch.io with a few bugfixes thanks to your kind feedback's. Here is the full changes list: [v0.0.9 Bugfixes](https://sleepingpandagames.itch.io/keep-chicks-alive/devlog/140786/v009-minor-bugfixes)

@wheffle As explained in the link below, I updated the game so that QWERTY users can now use the A key to move left. I'm a QWERTY guy so I barely forgot to check that. As simple as that.. Sorry for the frustration, but a huge thanks for reporting it! Very glad you still had fun with the game.

@tom-robson Don't really know what to say here expect you can not imagine how please I am to see yet another such positive comment about something I did my best to make it fun. So.. Thank you!

@inventivum-games This is my very first Ludum Dare participation, and probably not the last one.. Haha  It is definitely not easy to find a good balance between content and quality in such short time. I tried to focus first on the player flow, like: - Start a level - Play the level - End the level Once this flow was done. I started building a few more levels. There was only 3 at that time, and then I had one day left to work on the game. So I added on more level mechanic (move platforms), then built three more levels. Then I decided to not add more, and focus on debugging/optimizing the actual mechanics. Also worth mentioning, I tested almost every new code I added. To make sure it works, but also to get an overall idea of the game time. I thought around 5 minutes of gameplay would be okay for this. Hope these words help somehow. Excuse me for any typos. ^^'

lou-bagel 2020-04-27 22:58

Great entry! Love the retro aesthetic!

sleeping-panda-games 2020-04-27 23:28

Ty for playing, and for your kind comment @lou-bagel ☺️

borys 2020-04-30 14:01

Awesome work! I love graphics, music is also really cool, but I loved that the music ends with the time. Gameplay is pretty simple, but those games are the best. Great work!

otterdisgrace 2020-04-30 14:01

Somehow the music makes this the most stressful jam entry I've played yet! Really fun, though. I like the graphics a lot! It feels a bit too "out of my control" in some elements -- like how the animation of the chicks hatching eats up a few seconds during which platforms etc are still getting into place, but it's not a huge deal.

ryan-ackermann 2020-04-30 14:30

Your game feels very cohesive. The controls feels snappy and the art and music fit very well together. Nice take on the theme!

zubspace 2020-04-30 20:08

This game had me smiling throughout! The wonderful retro pixel art, the tiny animations, the hectic music and the snappy controls were all top-notch. You introduced new gameplay elements really well. Bravo!

mathstr0fficial 2020-05-01 15:00

I absolutely loved this entry! I'm a sucker for low-res platforming and this really blew it out of the park. What's most impressive, in my opinion, is honestly just the fact that it was made in Construct. I use Construct for my own projects, and I know how finicky it can be at times. But honestly, graphics, audio, and gameplay were all outstanding. Easily my favorite game of the jam so far. Keep it up, man!

dimesto52 2020-05-07 01:55

the monochrome side sometimes makes it illegible what is on the screen
