LD46 — Keep it alive

Inhabitable by inzombiak 2020-04-23T01:55:12Z

Ah, so cute! Gameplay is definitely super easy to pick up and smooth to play. The graphics are nice, and the audio is stellar (pun intended). Haha I found it a little bit weird sometimes when pests would seemingly travel through the sun to get to me, but otherwise everything seemed to be going as I expected. I found that the best technique seemed to be to just grab an asteroid and continually use it to deflect everything. :stuck_out_tongue: Now that I say that though, I wonder if it it might be possible to gather asteroids around you and build a kind of rock shield. Tips for anyone who plays it after me perhaps?

I think it's super tough to get final bits of polish into a game jam game, but for the sake of being constructive I'd definitely say that a score would provide a little bit more punch to the game, maybe in addition to having some additional animations for the Earth. Also incredible story element - infestation by late stage capitalism is truly a beautiful set-up. :joy:

Cat Ball by pabulum 2020-04-22T07:35:41Z

God I was so mad when I got the cat egg through only to die to basic platforming :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Super cute, polished game though! I had a lot of fun with this one. Pretty challenging, but reasonable I think for the most part. The curve definitely took a steep hike at level 4 though haha. Music is nice, and the art is simple but quite charming. I think in terms of improvements, my major issue was with the direction of motion you apply to the eggs. It felt like I would sometimes jump at them and smack then, then they'd fly in a totally different direction to what I anticipated.

Cell Defence by bongo227 2020-04-22T14:30:08Z

One of the less subtle nods to our current pandemic predicament, but certainly not in a bad way. This is a sweet little game, with an impressive roster of power-ups. It feels as though you've scoped it very cleverly to make sure that you could pack some value into the game while also not needing to build out wildly complex gameplay. It does get overwhelming very quickly, so I think that the inclusion of towers was important. I'm not sure if I missed it though, but I only realised they were a thing based on other peoples' comments!

A couple of small improvements: I think that it would be better to have non-scrollable text boxes on the mitochondria, either enlarging the box or shortening the text - perhaps with a symbolic representation of the upgrade rather than a worded one? My other main issue was that I couldn't figure out a way to disable the placement of turrets. There were a few occasions where I forgot the nucleus proximity rule on placement and then lost the game because I had to leave the nucleus unattended to get rid of the turret I was holding. :stuck_out_tongue: And as a more obvious point, some music wouldn't go astray I reckon

Keep our Mother alive by soyrandom 2020-04-22T10:18:21Z

Hey @soyrandom - not sure if it's just on my end, but I can't get the MacOS build to run. I just get a "The application can't be opened" error. :sob:

Plum by Heelio157 2020-04-22T14:13:39Z

A beautiful game for sure. I really liked the visuals here. The audio was quite simple, but also matched quite well in its simplicity even so. I'm a sucker for voiced sound effects, so I really loved that. I think the biggest fault is that the mechanics are somewhat unclear, so that might stand in the way of the game being fun. For me personally, the other big thing was just the control scheme. I'm so used to WASD at this point that QD for movement just killed me. :joy: Great job, it's lovely to see some classic puzzle-platformers. They always make a reasonable appearance in jams, but one of my favourite genres nonetheless.

THE SECRET FLAME by Thomas Lean 2020-04-23T02:53:13Z

Incredibly detailed, immersive and beautiful experience. It's a monumental feat in such a short space of time, even for a group of 7. I'm so impressed. I loved the character art, and the integration of dialogue was wonderful and made the experience so much more real. I don't agree with the assessment that the puzzles were all well designed though - I felt that the Fire-wrym runic puzzle was essentially just random, and the same applied to the puzzle after it. Perhaps I missed clues, but I feel that I scoured the area pretty thoroughly. My major problem was lag. The visual effects and the camera shifts often triggered pretty severe lag on my end, and I would get it sometimes entirely at random. That said, it normally wasn't super sever, and only lasted maybe 10 seconds or so on average - so it didn't harm my experience of the game too much. Regarding the completion of puzzles, as well as just gameplay in general, I think a large improvement might come in the form of increasing the fire's speed - I think this could make puzzles more intuitive, especially if they're based on sound as I assume the second one I mentioned was. Now that I consider it though, this might have been as a result of a mild amount of lag present throughout the first part of the game (before you enter the tower) - because the flame moved considerably faster once inside. If that's the case, it's probably just a question of optimisation - which is *very* understandably something that is hard to get around to within 72 hours. :joy: One final thing - the quit button doesn't seem to trigger anything. Perhaps just because it's on web?

The ending suquence was utterly gorgeous, and the visual effects throughout also enhanced the experience wildly. I would have loved to see the story come to fruition in some way - even if it was an after-credits thing. I would be really curious to know if you guys were trying to incorporate the theme, and if so what your interpretation was?

Incredible work!

Heartbreaking by mAnimal 2020-04-22T08:06:59Z

Love the concept, really nice. I found it a bit irritating that holding up jumps - that killed me more times than I care to admit  It's a nice little spin on the basic platformer genre, that actually feels quite fresh to me. That's an impressive achievement in 3 days. The sound interruption is a little bit off (when you die by landing on a blue area), and the graphics are bare, but it's endearing even so. It also has a pretty reasonable level of difficulty which curves nicely as you play. Nice work!

Growing defense by Fis 2020-04-22T13:43:44Z

This is a wonderful game, with so many cool ideas crammed into it in such a small space of time! However, I do think the game has tried to do too many things at once. I think that the upkeep idea takes away from the enjoyment of the game in the second half, because you have to spend so much time doing that, and you can't sit back and admire your wonderful plants as they crush the bug opposition. :grinning: The other major issue I had was that not giving any time between waves almost ensures that you don't have time to purchase new plants, because your time in-wave is already so busy.

But there are so many positives. The evolution mechanic is so cool, and well implemented too! The art is consistent and gorgeous, and the music is nice and relaxing (even if the game isn't always! Haha It feels like a game that is fundamentally really cool, but is just in need of some balancing to make sure it remains fun. I'd be very interested to see what this game looks like either without the upkeep mechanic, or with it reworked.

Balloony by Ryfi 2020-04-22T07:49:22Z

This is a fantastic little game. I had so much fun with it. :grinning: The tutorial is fantastic, the sounds (especially voice-over) are great, and the gameplay feels smooth and fun. A couple of the sounds felt a little bit out of place, and it might have been nice to have some background music - even just white noise. Maybe some chatter in the background? Allegedly Billy has friends (for now), so I feel like it would make sense. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: But yeah, overall an awesome experience, I have very few criticisms. Great work!

Missing Pieces by Abu Sabiq Mahdi 2020-04-22T11:13:54Z

I really like the aesthetic, and the idea that you had. It's an awesome interpretation of the theme, and super out-of-the-box, which is always refreshing. I loved the concept of the musical level, and the friendship motif in the end was stellar. I also quite enjoyed the simple background music, it fit very nicely. I do think though that the game has a frustrating feel to it at times - the sound effect when you lose is very harsh, and the game feels as though it's punishing you. This seems to me to be kind of in conflict with the themes you were trying to convey, so I found myself being taken out of the experience by that a bit.

Really great work on the whole! :grinning:

Gregg by Walkalope 2020-04-22T10:08:24Z

Very impressive graphically and mechanically in such a short time! I found that I could start shooting on the loading screen, which is a little bit odd, but I think that was the only "bug". I think I found it a bit too fast for a beginning like others, so I don't feel as though I really experienced the game to its true potential. Cool little idea and implementation though, and it feels nice an polished. One other thing to note: it seems like the controls for the jetpack could be described a little better, because I interpreted it a "press and hold space".

Keep chicks alive! by Sleeping Panda Games 2020-04-23T00:57:07Z

I loved your transitions between levels - that was really cool. The retro style was absolutely nailed in this one, so great work with that. My only complaint is probably that the movement feels a bit jittery when you're moving on stairs, and maybe that the game could have used a little more audio - maybe something at the start of each level would be nice? I would maybe tweak your font slightly as well, or perhaps just the spacing on the font, to increase readability.

Graphics, audio and gameplay combine really nicely to make it feel like a cohesive experience!

Run! Skeliboi by Piturnah 2020-04-22T10:58:59Z

68 was my high score. Had quite a bit of fun playing it! Very simple, but feels quite polished. Would have loved a death sound effect, and the game feels like it's a little bit unfair at times - in particular when you hit an obstacle which is then immediately followed by a double obstacle. :stuck_out_tongue: Other than that, the only issue I had was that the suburban street background kinda hurt my eyes when I got to full speed. Hahaha

Overall a very cute little infinite runner. Nice work!

Doggo by D4rkWeasel 2020-04-22T07:19:14Z

Had a bit of trouble getting the web version to run (probably just crummy internet though). Found it really funny, especially your voiced sound effects, that was glorious. The effect barking actually had didn't seem totally clear-cut to me (does it automatically stop a wolf if you bark at it once? And I couldn't tell how close I had to be). But super cute and enjoyable. Nice job!

The Birb by Ilimanic 2020-04-22T13:53:14Z

Very brief, but really good in tone and aesthetic. I feel like the player could be tweaked a little to match the scenery more visually, but that's only a small thing. The gameplay itself did feel a bit clunky, mostly because of the lack of animation and because the interactions with things were very instantaneous. Giving a bit more feedback to the player as they're doing things would go a really long way here I think. The moody aesthetic you were after was absolutely captured though, both in audio and visuals. Nice work!

Game of Beans by lt-farfetchd 2020-04-22T08:24:37Z

@ynk @javasaurus yep, definitely a fair call on the Sean-slap. Haha Hopefully the trailer shows a little glimpse of how that mechanic works, but we definitely could have indicated it more clearly. Thanks for the feedback!

@karas once the fires get to their maximum size you should hopefully see the garden's HP decrease - we did that to make it feel a little fairer (maybe at the cost of a challenge? Not sure). If that's not the case though, I guess you've found a bug! :stuck_out_tongue:

Game of Beans by lt-farfetchd 2020-04-22T13:59:06Z

@pineapplegladiator that's awesome! Glad you enjoyed it!

Game of Beans by lt-farfetchd 2020-04-22T14:33:54Z

@sledzik it's a feature! :joy: I think a lesson I took from that was that Unity's polygon colliders are not the most reliable, even if they are quick to use in a pinch. In a game like this where velocity is based on the relative position of your cursor, I think that it's too easy to run into trouble with them. A good learning experience though.

current by zzox 2020-04-22T09:42:44Z

I love the theme music on the new game screen, so funky. Graphics are awesome and have great consistency. The game generally speaking feels very inspired by Baba is You - which you should absolutely check out if you don't know of it

The gameplay is simple and ramps up nicely. I didn't find that the 10 levels were especially tricky, but definitely provided enough of a challenge to be continually engaging It seemed a little bit strange that the electricity only fires off when you move, but that's a very minor gripe. I also found a small bug (I think) - you seem to be able to sit right up against a charged pipe if there is a rock above you. It would also have been nice to have a sequence where a fish kills you, instead of the fish kind of bouncing off of you like it would any other surface. But on the whole, only very minor concerns. It's a beautifully polished little game!

Sheep it alive! by SheetCode 2020-04-22T08:19:55Z

Aw, adorable! I love the charming graphics and the voiced sound effects, they really made it. The background tune is also nice and relaxing. It feels like the game's components really fit together nicely, so it has a lot of cohesion which is awesome. Maybe the only odd thing out is the UI on the game over screen. That's probably the only real downfall in terms of immersion I'd say. The inclusion of difficulty is awesome, and it's such an easy game to play, which is wonderful. Incredible job!

STOoOpid Chicken by ghenriquemo 2020-04-23T02:42:58Z

A cute, fun game (if a little stressful at times). Not sure I have the reflexes to make it to the end and, as others have said, checkpoints would make this a much less panicky play. but even without completing the game it's rewarding to figure out each area and keep the poor, stoopid chicken alive.

Bustion Defender by AxGord 2020-04-22T07:58:13Z

Super impressive effort in just 22 hours, nice work. Could definitely use some balancing - probably an increase to fire-rate or damage per shot (of the player), or both would be a good start. I think it would also help a lot if the game curved into its difficulty rather than taking heavy damage really early - that way you could build up some savings as a buffer later on. I enjoyed the power-ups, and I think they were a good inclusion to spice up the gameplay - exactly what it needs. I really love the concept of the mines, but I couldn't get them to work for me sadly.

Save It With Fire!!! by Jason Woerner 2020-04-22T07:29:04Z

Pretty impressive level of gameplay for a game jam, that's an great effort. Only major criticisms would be the lack of music and that the gameplay feels like it might be a little fast too soon. I quite like the art, and the concept is cool - definitely not something that I would have thought of. I enjoyed what I assume was a little nod to our current pandemic situation as well. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Scrambl'd by StarErik 2020-04-22T10:34:05Z

Super challenging, but a lot of fun. Simple gameplay that's easy to pick up - so that's great. And the music definitely carries the game really well without any sound effects. It doesn't miss them much at all. I feel like the game's overall strength came from how well all of the art, gameplay, music and styling was so on-brand. There was a clear aesthetic and stylistic choice you made and I think you drove it home really well! I found the music was a little bit jumpy on a couple of occasions, and there were definitely times when jumping that my position seemed to jump, rather than my movement being smooth. I believe this was as a result of collisions with walls or additional springs, but it's hard to say exactly at speed. Loved it overall! Could not beat it though. Haha

Toastie by LeeCode 2020-04-23T03:31:00Z

I really enjoyed this! The music really creates the mood of watching a fire flicker, it has an almost hypnotic effect. The sound and graphics had me feeling tired and relaxed even while being chased around by hungry deer, which was kind of strange but very cool! Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to re-gain health, so I died pretty quickly. I can definitely imagine this becoming a cute, kinda trippy little survival game.

Mr. Fluff by Nazorus 2020-04-22T14:43:35Z

In the end I wasn't sure if it was going to curve into a difficulty I would lose at, so I decided to shoot my new best friend. "Death by betrayal", totally brutal. :joy: I was quite a fan of the theme that you used, but for me the best inclusion was the "pew" effect whenever you shoot. Absolute gold right there. I also loved the doom-guy-esque hand that holds the gun. The visuals are probably the aspect that could benefit from attention the most - really just in terms of making sure they're consistent. But that's mostly just a polish thing I think. And as others have mentioned, increasing the difficulty would be great too.

Love Verne by Greebs 2020-04-22T10:46:18Z

Loved the art and the dialogue - it's really impressive that you managed to get dialogue in and feeling good in such a short time! I think I had the same issue as some others, where it can be quite confusing at the beginning. I think that it feels like a slightly incomplete implementation, but that's probably just because the feedback on your actions isn't super obvious. It definitely helped that you provided some hints on your itch page though, so I ended up having some fun with it for sure! I'd love for the game to be expanded upon, because I feel like there's a lot of untapped potential!

Feed the Turtle King! by Butzbo 2020-04-22T13:19:51Z

Super cute! Has a good difficulty curve, and feels super polished. There was some slightly glitchy behaviour I think with my player - freezing in place a couple of times was the main one. Almost like he was celebrating his victory prematurely. :stuck_out_tongue: I also think that the boss' health bar might be positioned a bit incorrectly? Or maybe it just looks strange to me, I'm not too sure. I think that the end sequence could have used a little bit of flair, but was still really cute - and the intro sequence is amazing, that's some great work there. I found myself not using the dodge very much, but I reckon I probably would be in a larger implementation of the game. Awesome work!
