Hey, I saw this game and it looks cool but somehow I cannot use your link to find your game :( Can you help, please? :)

walkalope 2020-04-21 13:04

Hey @r3d3r - I'm a dummy. I forgot to make the itch page public! Should be okay now. Thanks!

r3d3r 2020-04-21 13:17

Hey hey @walkalope! Thanks for allowing me to play your game. I absolutely love your style, music is nicely balanced the effects teensy to loud. But it seems I cannot play the game smoothly must be my internet or PC not sure but overall it was an amazing experience thank you :D

nitero 2020-04-21 15:59

I can almost just return what you commented on my game: The game is kinda hard for me. I think this mainly comes from not being able to clearly distinguish between foreground and background. I always felt kind of lost and knowing how the portal looks would've also been helpful.

Apart from that it's a solid game. Cool art style and game feel~

walkalope 2020-04-21 16:16

@nitero - you are right about distinguishing between foreground and background. It's something that was on our list of things that need attention - but didn't get the treatment it deserved. The same can be said for aspects of our game that "teach" the player how to play (such as showing them what the portal looks like).

We will upload a post-dare version in the coming days and I hope you will check it out again once some improvements have been made :v:

Thanks for checking it out!

bredcrumb 2020-04-21 18:21

I love the upbeat music and visuals look very nice! The gameplay is fun, but sometimes you just get blasted out of nowhere. Other than that the game is solid :D

bostor 2020-04-21 18:23

It is a one well done game! Great visual and sound! I didnt like the knockback effect tho. I think it is also a good thing to give a note how the teleport looks like. I was just wandering around when winscreen appeared. It was very unexpected.

walkalope 2020-04-21 18:46

@bredcrumb - thanks so much for playing! Yes, there are still a few bugs with how the turrets get spawned and *sometimes* they seem to shoot from very weird angles.

@bostor I think there is also a bit of a bug that spawns the teleport *inside* a block instead of on top of one... that may have been what happened there. Thanks for playing!

nablaz 2020-04-22 00:26

Great job! Movement/shooting has been flawless for me and the music is nicely matched for this style of gameplay. The graphics are really cool too, albeit a bit chaotic... This means that it's sometimes hard to clearly understand what's happening around you (or why you died). It would also have been nice to start at a slower pace (maybe with some sort of tutorial) to get a grip before things get serious. All in all, I really liked the game and would like to see/play an optimized version in the future!

owlhowell 2020-04-22 00:59

@nablaz Thanks for taking the time to check out our game!I definitely agree about things being chaotic. Things need to be more clear and a slower start, like you mentioned, might help with that. Thanks for the feedback

grantimation 2020-04-22 03:19

Gameplay is a little chaotic for my tastes, but I still enjoyed it! I really like the aesthetic and the audio in the game. I enjoy the take on the premise. I will say that the overall chaos of the game left me a little confused as to what was happening at times. I also found that I could control the game while the initial loading screen was visible. Overall this is a really clean project, well done!

2020-04-22 06:38

Hi! Nice work! I want to make a video with the best games of LDJam46. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdTsWE7iIk . Can I find your game also on indiexpo website? The channel is linked with them.

davidvfilipe 2020-04-22 09:45

Super chaotic and emissive ahaha would love to see this with a little bloom effect.

seano 2020-04-22 09:59

Awesome game!

lt-farfetchd 2020-04-22 10:08

Very impressive graphically and mechanically in such a short time! I found that I could start shooting on the loading screen, which is a little bit odd, but I think that was the only "bug". I think I found it a bit too fast for a beginning like others, so I don't feel as though I really experienced the game to its true potential. Cool little idea and implementation though, and it feels nice an polished. One other thing to note: it seems like the controls for the jetpack could be described a little better, because I interpreted it a "press and hold space".

julienlussiez 2020-04-22 17:50

Really like the voxel style ! It's something I also like to make in voxel art so it's a pleasure to see one. The theme is respected, well done.

skyeward 2020-04-22 17:51

Hey! Congrats on a great entry! Some great voxel viz for the time constraints and some really fun audio too. Big Spelunky fan so didn't at all mind how unforgiving it felt

kovalok 2020-04-22 17:51

Very nice game with cool graphics. It was sometimes hard to differentiate the turrets from the background, they somehow blended to the background. But overall good job!

undead-aubergine 2020-04-22 17:55

Great art, and music. What voxel editor did you use? Also the second jump propulsion mechanic is pretty slick.

owlhowell 2020-04-22 17:56

@julienlussiez Thanks for checking out our game! We are new to voxels but have fallen in love with them the past few months.

@skyeward Ha! I'm the torture wasn't a bother lol.

julienlussiez 2020-04-22 17:58

It's great ! I understand why ! Voxels can look awesome.

zguba 2020-04-22 18:00

Hit reaction is way too disruptive in my opinion. Sounds of jet pack when double jumping and jumping itself should be more tooned, its hard on ears :P

Also, when you display loading panel I can already move my character, died few times this way :)

owlhowell 2020-04-22 18:00

@kovalok Thanks for playing and for the feedback! You are right about the turrets blending in. I think it was just a tunnel vision thing on our part. We plan on making a non judged update soon.

@undead-aubergine Thanks for taking a look. We used MagicaVoxel for the voxel modeling and animation. Have you used any others?

chance-slaughter 2020-04-22 18:01

Amazing!!! probably my favorite so far!

chance-slaughter 2020-04-22 18:05

Page officially bookmarked so I can play again later!

sirllama 2020-04-22 18:08

You made this so well, however, It would be cool if the turrets got increasingly better, cause just the first level is hard.

undead-aubergine 2020-04-22 18:11

@owlhowell not yet, but I loved the style and wanted to give it a try :) thanks!

galactic-chimp 2020-04-22 18:17

Hi, nice game, very pretty graphics and audio. The gameplay is fun, but a bit too hard and chaotic. I often died without knowing what happened. But overall it was pretty fun.

owlhowell 2020-04-22 18:26

@davidvfilipe @seano thanks for playing our little game! We probably could tweak the bloom lol.

@lt-farfetchd and @zguba we totally need to fix the loading screen. It’s always surprising to me all the little things you miss on a time crunch like this one

antti-haavikko 2020-04-22 18:29

Looks cool but also very busy looking. It's very hard to distinguish what is what. I also think the camera is bit too close so it leaves like no time to react to whats coming past screen boundaries. Or then you just need to inch forward very carefully and that just isn't really fun. The turrets seem to have god like reflexes so unless you outrange them or bounce kill them, you're pretty much dead on the spot. Quite often even the health bar doesn't matter with all that knockback and like no cooldown on their next shots.

Oh and if you're trying to play too careful, you're sol too because the plant life depletes so fast and the plant life pellets give so little. On the other hand, I think the was too many player life pickups since it was very rare to take any damage without dying anyway.

Ugh, can it really take that long to load? I'm guessing you're generating levels there but still can't possibly take that long. You can also at least shoot while it's "loading" so I'm quite suspicious about that. And if it's just a faux loading screen tho show the story, you should not force it on retries.

Didn't really feel like a jetpack. More like a double jump where the second jump propels you to the sky with the speed of light. Which made my first point about the god turrets even worse. Moving vertically with such insane speeds made it like a russian roulette when moving upwards. If there was a turret there, you'd probably die. And since screens have less height than width, you had even less time to react. A jetpack that would work like, well, like a jetpack would have been better. So after each jump you'd have specific amount of juice and holding jump would then add some upwards force and deplete the juice. With that you could make some more careful ascends and descends and might be more equipped to survive longer. Never found the portal but in the end I have this feeling that up is the way you're going too. That was the direction the level seemed to span the furthest and even changed visually the higher you climbed. And from the player perspective, it was the most dangerous direction to go.

Probably should have made the background color that is seen from the holes something else besides red. That way the red would be more easily and faster get tied to danger because of turrets and lava. The "level edge" dark blocks too blended way too well to the background walls. Made it hard to tell them apart.

Anyways, good job!

owlhowell 2020-04-22 18:48

@chance-slaughter That means a lot! Thank you for playing and and taking the time to share that with us!

@sirllama We are currently toying with adjusting the starting difficulty. Thanks for the feedback!

boyturnedrobot 2020-04-22 22:19

Hey guys, great game. I really LOVE the visuals, especially the lighting. If the background was a bit lighter I think it would have been easier to see where turrets were, but they were difficult to see and I died a lot to them. Overall a fun game, love the voxel art and the music is nice and up beat. Good work! P.S. I forgot to add that I was able to use controls and hear sound during the load screen, just a heads up.

walkalope 2020-04-22 23:37

@zguba Thanks for playing! Yes the "moving before the level finishes loading" thing is definitely a bug. We are currently working on a much-improved version (not necessarily bug-free...) that will address this issue.

@antti-haavikko in fact, the player gets loaded into the scene pretty early in the generation process. The loading screen is just there so people don't watch all the blocks spawning into place. We've adjusted it in the post-dare so that the player is the last thing to be spawned in, and will not be controllable until the level starts. We've also addressed many of your other critiques as well, so I hope you will check out the post-dare version!

pomo 2020-04-23 00:26

Really fun!!

owl-and-jackalope 2020-04-23 00:29

Game has a really nice visual and audio feel! Took me a minute to get used to the jump mechanic, but ended up really liking it as I continued to play. Turrets were a little unforgiving especially if there were three or more around a corner. Overall, great entry.

cheesepencil 2020-04-23 03:24

I found it super difficult, but I also found spelunky super difficult so it seems right! Cute visuals. Great work on procedurally generated maps that kind of thing is always cool to see in a jam.

I liked it.

zonvoi 2020-04-24 00:52

It's really fun! I like the style, one thing to point out is that you can control the player while the level is loading, but everything else is great!

james-shipp 2020-04-25 01:45

Hung out with these guys in the stream for a bit while they were working, super nice dudes!! Congrats on finishing the game, was hyped to see what you added since I saw the in development version. That voxel art's still killin it!

willian-oliva 2020-04-25 22:25

Realy nice game, but i've feel easy to go trough. Some enemies, and other kind of challenge would be fine

owlhowell 2020-04-25 23:34

@willian-oliva thanks for checking our game out! More enemies to come in the future. I loved playing yours!

trigueiro 2020-04-26 01:53

I had some trouble with identifying the "bad guys" and the jet pack was also a bit tricky to get a hang with it (i think it might have been a bug because holding space did not do nothing special, just double jump). I really liked the idea and the voxel style. Will try the newer version now

sanjana 2020-04-26 02:47

Thia game is amazing! I found it really hard but thats what makes me want to try it over and over again!

emperor-eagle 2020-04-26 04:18

This game is really cool! The voxel graphics are stunning, especially the glowing elements! The controls felt very responsive, and the jetpack was well implemented. I found it fun, and wanted to play it over again. The audio mixed in well for a good overall feel and mood. I think some improvements could involve making it easier to identify the hazards so the game appears more black and white in that way. You can easily tell what the terrain is and what the enemies/hazards are so you don't have to guess what to avoid (not that it took long of course). Also, I noticed the game started a tad earlier than the loading screen disappeared, so you could die instantly if you spawned by a turret before the loading screen had gone away. These are relatively minor things compared to all the things you did well! It felt polished and was a pleasure to play! Really good game overall, well rated!

axeltherabbit 2020-04-26 19:00

I had an issue with the jetpack, I wasn't able to double jump, (even by holding space). Anyway this is a great game

notan-lemon 2020-04-28 03:52

This is cool. I love the voxel graphics. Though it was so hard that I kept dying, the game over scene was beautiful and made me stay calm. Good job.

barret 2020-04-28 18:47

was playing with a touchpad so that's probably my first mistake haha, but overall it was pretty fun. I really enjoyed the lighting of the bullets and how they bounced so you could do some cool trick shots to take out the enemy turrets. I believe I only found one powerup that gave me more plant life. I wasn't able to find the teleporter after a few tries, but I still had fun with the game.

my main feedback was the jetpack or double jump seemed like it was very touchy, sometimes I would jump high enough sometimes not. I was probably just missing something. I realize the level is dark to show off the lighting and b/c of the environment. but it was a little bit difficult to naviagate at first. after awhile I got used to it

duck-reaction 2020-04-29 06:32

Very nice game, I love the look and feel.

Particles effects work well. The character design is awesome. The audio creates a cool atmosphere, the only drawback is the jump sound, it not fit very well with the sound design. The death animation is incredible, but it's not really visible in game, so sad.

Very polish game, good job.

mathijs750 2020-05-07 21:53

I love the feeling you created. I'd give feedback but seeing this wall of comments most issues are probably addressed. Well done :)
