Saw that we had similar concept so came to play, it's super fun but I couldn't even get past the second level lol! So funny though, and it seems very doable, just challenging!

This game's got style.
Fantastic job on not only managing a COMPO but also your first PICO-8! My first reaction upon booting up the game was worrying as I was, in a somewhat literal sense, cast off into plummeting free-fall without a parachute to pace my learning of the controls. However, after reading the controls in the pause menu I foundd a fairly intuitive challenge. My favorite part of the game must be the eagerness of the "alligators [who] will chew you up like bubblegum" every time I would fly even remotely low to the ground. My main suggestion, were you to improve upon this project, would be to add some purely visual trail indicator of the drones because I unfortunately had to learn every level through trial by fire. Regardless, great work and keep it up!
Great job! The game looks and feels amazing. I've always enjoyed retro style games, and this one is just what I'd expect. I enjoyed the particles especially.
The sound effects were great too, and while I did notice the lack of a main theme song, it never bothered me and I feel it helped me focus on the puzzles at hand.
Amazing game for a game jam, and even more amazing considering it is your first PICO8 jam!
Lol the random Florida theme makes this hilarious. The way the alligators just swoop in just looks comical to me. The gameplay is absolutely tough as nails though. I really struggled just to get to level 4. Great job on your first Pico-8 entry!
Man those drones are no joke. Controls are tight, doesn't feel impossible. Loved that the alligators are just waiting for you to drop tiny bit lower...
Frustrating, yet rewarding. The perfect amount of challenge!
Fun game! I found it pretty addictive even though I'm really bad at it, I kept trying but couldn't get very far. I like the sprites a lot. I think a couple tweaks to the controls could make it less frustrating, mainly being able to cancel the drop or at least flap while aiming the drop. Overall nice job!
It's always cool to see fellow pico entries. Glad that you made and finished it. The controls are (obviously) pretty hard but it is consistent. The mood is great, the humor as well, and I have to say that the description in the Ludum page is good. It is part of the entry in my opinion and it was good.:) Great job, great entry! Oh and I couldn't go near you 5:31. :D
pico gang! amazing entry, really fun to play with and I appreciate the graphics as well. the game feels very smooth, bit frustrating, yes, but that's what makes it rewarding. great job!
cool pixel art! but i cant start the game:^(
@polinachrr why can't you start the game?
give him 5 ! Such an amazing hard rage game well done !
Awesome game! Overall it feels really good. The game is difficult, but fair in that I always felt like it was my fault when I died or sent a baby spiraling to an untimely demise, and never felt like the controls or game was being unfair to me. Sound effects were simple but effective, and the level design felt really good. Each level felt like a step up in challenge and built off of the things that had come before it. Really enjoyed playing this. Great work!!!
The Sun is a monster! It freaked me out the first time popping more than a proper horror movie.
this was a pretty fun to play game, the controls were a little floaty, and it was pretty difficult. but thats just me being bad at the game. overall it was fun to play!
A little...disturbing... but the actual game mechanics were super fun. Really well executed!
YAY another Pico-8 game! ^-^ and omg this is so brutal, i love it hahaha!! especially that you can see the alligators closing in when you go near the ground :)
Thanks for hanging out in the stream and bringing your game!
Here is a link to the VOD that starts at your section. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1809875425?t=04h37m58s
Absolutely fantastic game! It was so much fun to play it! The difficulty was so well kept to where was really difficult but not too much to where it wasn't enjoyable! Very good!
Really cool, florida energy 100%, I florida'd all over the place, well polished!
Great job! This was tough (but fair!) and a lot of fun to get through. The difficulty progressed really nicely and I slowly got better at the physics as I went.
Also really funny! Hilarious seeing your stork explode followed by the baby. Art was good too, appreciate the polish you got in with the win screen.
Only real criticism is the sound is a little sparse, but you did have all the sound FX needed to support the gameplay.
love pico 8, gameplay was challenging and I made it through the last level 4/5
https://clips.twitch.tv/FrailTrustworthyToadMrDestructoid-M4shA_eqJkyLaxDf
Nice work! This is a very well rounded Compo entry. I didn't find the controls any harder to use than I'd expect for a flappy bird game. My biggest struggle was probably getting used to the physics, and I figured that out pretty quickly
great game! I want to run for the highscores! please if you can add scoreboard so we can compare! love it.
I loved this! Thanks for letting me play on stream, here's the VOD! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1jjtp0dcDg

Nice game, pretty difficult but ramps good. Everything feels tight, and was good fun too!

@ausstein WHOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
@ausstein I didn't even think that was possible, GG bro!!!
stork.png
working on it
Still much improvement possible :)
stork.png
still did one mistake
Finally got a run I am half way happy with
my time on level 4 still can be improved a lot tho
https://youtu.be/EEUQuvG5nYE
Wow, that's exactly how I remember Florida from my last time there.
My score: 9 minutes, 2 seconds. But, it was 9 minutes and 2 seconds full of fun and blood. My favorite two moments where when I got shot down, but the baby survived, and was successfully delivered, and when I was just flying along and clipped a drone and it turned the baby into a strawberry smoothly while I just kept on flying.
Great entry!
@ausstein incredible! i didn't think play could be optimized to that degree.
If I make a game like this next LD I will make sure the enemy cycles are powered by time-since-last-respawn instead of time-since-game-launch so the runs are deterministic entirely according to player input, which should largely remove the element of luck and make demonstrations of skill like yours even cooler
I'm very happy that you're having so much fun with it. That means a lot to me. Thank you <3
@payaosito it's pretty tricky, thanks for giving it a try!
@baknik thanks! you do too!
@glove there's a common turn of phrase "sink or swim" but in florida it's "swim or get eaten by alligators". thanks for playing!
@calcopod thank you for the kind words! I shouldn't have waited until the end of sunday to think about sound design and music but 48 hours is just never enough...
@pianoman373 happy you think it's humorous, it's deliberately ridiculous (trying to crack top 3 in humor (again)) thanks for playing!
@cinterre i saw a gator in florida last summer! that's exactly what they're like!! thanks for playing <3
@nhcarter123 i wanted the game to make you feel like you were hitting yourself in the face, but also wanting to keep doing it. very happy to hear i tuned the difficulty just right. thanks for playing!
@josh-bothun if i had more time i would have gladly made more obstacles in the scene to better tune the difficulty, in the end i had to make the controls something of an obstacle to give the game the most depth I could in the 48 hours. thank you so, so much for the kind words and giving it your best shot
@zahkros I went in with low expectations from PICO-8 and ended the weekend in love with it. It will be my first choice for jamming in the future, for sure. I always debate composing long writeups for LD (knowing that most people don't read them, and the ones that do may easily spend more time reading about the game than playing it) but I'm glad I did and someone read it. thanks for playing!
@bartalomew i got way more out of pico than i thought i would, i'm happy with the result and it means a lot to me that you enjoyed it, too. thanks for playing!
@boboch-d-brew you're the best! thanks so much!
@the3rdhunter I'm so pleased you felt that every death was your fault, that's how I felt about Spelunky and the feeling I was trying to replicate for this jam. I am certain some of my janky hit detection killed you at least once and it wasn't your fault - but I'll get it right next LD! Thanks for playing
@janures Did you know that SPF 100 is the best selling grade of sunscreen in Florida? (You don't, because I just made it up). I'm glad the game gave you a rise, and thank you for playing!
@jcmonkey thanks for giving it a shot!! I learned a lot this LD and will definitely make good controls a high priority next time
@gary-the-enchanter I was afraid it might be a little over-the-top but sometimes you gotta break a few eggs to place in the humor category haha. thanks for playing!
@riley9 Last weekend I learned that PICO-8 is the bomb! I have mucho respect for the folks (like you) that can squeeze a lot of depth out of a tiny little cart, and I'm glad you had fun with mine <3
@augmotic What a trip! Thanks for taking the time to play my game
@borderdestroyer i had as much fun watching you play it lol thank you for the kind words!
@spacespytv MISSION ACCOMPLISHED thanks so much for playing
@protowlf it was awesome watching you gradually improve until you rocked it, thanks for playing!
@rookrules you let me know when you upload that YT short with that clutch baby drop. it was a blast watching you play
@lone-wolf thank you for the kind words and thank you for playing <3
@potkirland PICO-8 is very limited and online leaderboards just aren't possible in 48 hours without a lot of hacks - oh how i wish i could, though! thank you so much for playing
@krassenstein oh man it was a hoot. the pleasure was mine!
@furtive-pygmy it makes me really happy to hear you say the difficulty ramps well. thank you for the kind words and thank you for playing <3
@jimbly half of the streamers I've seen play it are getting 10-20 minute times, you're ahead of the curve!! I'm very happy to hear those "clutch" moments are frequent enough that a lot of folks get to experience them. thank you for playing!!
The controlls are snappy and fun, and it never feels like the game is being unfair. I WON. Yes.
IWIN.PNG
@cheesepencil resetting the game reset the cycles. I had the cycles for the first 2 levels optimized, after that my runs had too much variance. Btw does the time advance between levels (both for cycles and highscore?) and how about after a death? Important things to know for optimization haha :D
@ausstein the run timer starts when you press circle on the title screen and *only* stops when you see the "you win" screen or return to the title screen mid-run.
You can't respawn until all of *the stork's* gore particles despawn (baby gore doesn't matter).
Drone movement is based on the time since the cart loaded, the effect being the cycles - for all drones, on all levels - begin on cart boot and don't end until cart reboot.
@cheesepencil Interessting so I can save a few more seconds by more quicky pressing circle to continue haha. I think i can also save one more cycle on level 3 with that :) Also you could wait after cart load to get different cycles.
Man I can see myself grinding this another 1-2 hours tonight lol
so cute game!!!I love this game very much,,,it is funny and I spent a lot time on this one, suit the game jam theme so well .controll fe1elings a little difficult but I like it ,,,nice job
It looks fun and pretty
Great work and fun game! its can be great mobile game! :)
aww man a game made with pico8 that's awesome! I really love the art style and the mechanics of this game, as a pico8 user I can tell that the trajectory lines, crocodiles and drone paths are not that easy to make which is impressive, I had issues with the death screen where I accidentally pressed "Give up" at some point which really sucked but other than that I had plenty of fun!
On paper, the gameplay is nothing special but when I exploded into a fountain of blood and then the baby got eaten by the crocodiles and ALSO exploded in a fountain of blood I realized the gameplay doesn't matter. You absolutely knew what you were doing you madman.
great concept and fun to play but I suck and couldn't get passed level 2 lol
@sidlovatt did you know you can turn left and right with the arrow keys? Most people who get stuck just aren't pushing all the buttons....
Regardless, thanks for playing!!
Super fun, super funny, definitely Floridian. Great job!
Stunning Pico game! Loved the vibe and interesting implementation of floor and ceiling boundaries. Great entry!
The controls on this felt really solid. Lots of fun to play. Great job! 7'8" on my first attempt.
I love pico-8, great job
bundle dumper.png
Incredible use of pico-8. I love it that the baby and the stork have separate collision, that has some hilarious consequences!
Really cute little game! I didn't feel the limited lives added a lot to this game. The number of lives kind of felt like an odd spot between each level being a gauntlet, and basically free. I only had to continue when carrying over lives from the last level. I felt the bird movement was a bit floaty for the obstacle layout as well, which was a fun challenge, but also kind of frustrating initially. Overall really cool!
14'41", great little pico game, love that. Fun and quite difficult.
Hilarious, fun and quite challenging game.
Ran a few more attempts today, the fast cycle in level 3 is possible but insanely difficult. I only got it once so far.
What a challenge, I'll be back for more, I love pico games and this one was a great addition!
I hope no child was harmed! All that blood - it's just tomato juice! Great and compact game!
I had a blast. Lotta fun. It'd be cool if you could slow down time though when aiming the baby. I liked that you could see the path, but I didn't really have time to look and act on it with all of the hazards. Instead, I just learned the shape of the toss when I tap the button and tried my hardest to be consistent.

Classic rage-inducing masterpiece. I hate you. I love you. I don't know what to do with myself. All those babies. Why? :/ Wonderful implementation of the theme! Very impressive solo development. You got that humor that removes my tumor, if you get what I'm saying ;) ;) ;)
Stork Games 4 Lyfe!
I loved the graphics. The detail and character in your stork with what...50 pixels? The baby is like 10. Incredible.
Very challenging and very fun. Kept me coming back even though I hard core struggled with that last level. Here's the vod: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1812558164?t=0h8m17s
hi! you submitted this game on my stream and I played through it :)
here's a link to the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1812705828?t=2h27m54s
if you turn around and flap on the same frame you maintain your speed, its too inconsistent for me right now for the speedruns but potential for a lot of timesave
This game is infuriating but so fun!
I first saw it on a stream and kept thinking to myself "Damn this guy sucks", then when I got to play it I saw how hard it is!
The graphics are amazing, you can recognize the rednecks and aligators. The bloodbath of every death is so ludicrous and fun.
The sound effects are awesome, but I missed some music to accompany.
I managed to beat the last level though the stork died right before the baby got delivered. I got the game over/retry screen, and then the house raised the happy baby flag. I had to rage quit!
One nit-picky thing I'd point is that the instructions mention circle button but in-game it looks like a square. This got me slightly confused at start, but it's just a small detail.
Congratulations on such a fun and crazy experience!
Interesting gameplay. Controls were well done. Had fun playing it.
Excellent game. Graphics and sound effects are very good. The levels(that I managed to pay) were quiet challenging but being short and having a quick restart made me keep having one more go. Soooo much blood.
Tight controls, great collision. Gave me awesome nostalgia, just challenging enough! Cheers on nice tight scope well executed
@ausstein I'm sure you've moved on by now but if you were interested in a more speedrun friendly post-jam version, it's here: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=52584
* drone cycles start when the level starts and restart when you "retry" a level after all storks are exhausted * elapsed time on winner screen includes fractional seconds * the first formation of drones on level 2 moved 8 pixels upwards * corrected stork and drone hitboxes
other than some effects, ui, and minor sprite enhancements there are no other changes
@rincs it was a blast watching you play on stream!! gg!!
@olddog i'm glad you had fun thank you for playing!
@kot9 thank you for the kind words <3
@gamedocs thank you for playing! would you believe it works great on mobile as is? Screenshot_20230507-011439.png
@0x-void-x0 watching the streamers almost everybody "gave up" by accident the first time, I should have made the text read "flap to retry"... thank you so much for playing!!!
@gn-fur competition in the humor category is cutthroat, gotta stand out somehow XD thank you so much for playing
@bodhiagora lots of fun watching you play on stream!
@conduit I'm so glad you had fun thanks for playing!
@jitspoe it was a real hoot to watch you play on stream, thanks so much for the kind words (and great time btw)
@dgo i didn't know i was going love pico-8 before the jam, but i love it now. thanks for playing!
@bytomancer i'm so glad you got a chuckle from it! and great time! thanks for playing <3
@nardandas thank you so much for the kind words. you're absolutely right the lives/retry mechanism is a little tacked on. I knew no one would finish the game if I didn't include a feature to retry from the same level. I wanted something to prevent players from kamikazi'ing on the longer levels and having the retry reset the deliveries seemed less cruel than forcing everyone back to the title screen
@leo-barber-dev I'm overjoyed that you persisted and succeeded! thank you for playing!
@tricky-fat-cat it makes me happy you got a chuckle from it, thanks so much for playing <3
@wetburritosupreme thanks for playing!
@gmaker Florida is a major exporter of tomatoes!!! thanks for playing!
@chris1919 you did great!! altering time with a PICO-8 cart is beyond my skills now but maybe next LD... thanks for playing!
@langotriel i'm so happy you had fun i hope it wasn't too traumatizing!! thanks for playing <3
@matt-green PICO-8 uses 8x8 sprites for nearly everything and only has a 128x128 screen space... every pixel counts! thank you for playing!!
@bongard22 it was so much fun to watch you play on stream. see you next LD!!
@badcop i had a ton of fun watching you play!! gg!
@niz thanks for playing!!
@smdg I'm glad you were satisfied with the controls, thanks for playing!!
@harmadillo it brings me great joy to hear folks say "just one more try..." so much. thank you for playing!!
@jdemattos thank you thank you thank you and thank you for playing <3
@cheesepencil
one thing you could fix that would drastically improce speedrunning is that when you hit the new level button for more than one frame it does a flap at the start of the level. that makes it e.g. impossible to clear the first formation on level 2. Maybe make it so it does not register the flap input if it was pressed on level select?
@ausstein done https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=52584
250ms cooldown on flap input when stork spawns
Haha, this was a crazy game! Super hard and fast paced, but quite fun! I also felt the need to try "just one more time"
It was a bit bloody for my taste, which is something I never thought I'd say about a game where I played a baby delivery stork  But it's a solid and well put together game. Props for making it in PICO8, I really like that retro vibe.
Played this on stream: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1812429312?t=04h20m10s
I appreciated the wackyness of it all! I wished I could keep on flapping while taking aim. I couldn't beat all the levels. I have to give props for accomplishing this as a compo entry, and in a very limiting environment!
The game felt really difficult for one reason: cannot move after aiming. I think if that was changed or tweaked to make the aiming feel less punishing, I would enjoy this game a lot more.
Cool arcade game ! Maybe a bit hard but that's what we want in this case. Pico-8 games in LD are always impressive, good job
The controls take a bit to get the hang of, but once I did it was a fun challenge navigating around the obstacles and landing precise shots into the homes. I like how the amount of deadly obstacles and blood is over the top that it becomes comical. Dropping a baby onto hard ground from several stories up just wasn't deadly enough; there had to also be crocodiles waiting to snatch them up. Graphics and audio are overall really nice, and I like the stork relaxing on the end screen after a job well done. Well done aside from the dozens of babies that got shredded along the way, that is.
First PICO-8 game I've seen this jam, and I always love them! Though it seems I'm just too terrible at it to progress far into it - after what felt like 20 tries I managed to reach the level with 3 deliveries, but got stuck on it. At this point I think I've turned enough babies into red mist to cause concern for the authorities, so I think I'll leave it at that. Love the visual style, the responsive controls, and most of all the anti-cheese mechanics. :D
Damn, that was hard! I like the controls, they feel just the right amount of floaty. I had a bit of trouble with the lives system, how they seemed to carry over between levels and depleted even with no deliveries completed, which both incentivize you to kill yourself repeatedly until you have the full amount of lives to try a level with.
I did not get the controls at first but once you find out the right way to play it really becomes enjoyable and even gets addictive ! Nice entry !
This is the hardest game I've ever played. I couldn't get past the second level. It's super funny though. I love the gore and the silliness.
@brandon-campbell Did you use the left and right directional controls? many folks who got stuck early didn't realize they could change direction any time
I persevered until level 5 (or the one where you have to do 5 deliveries at least, you had to stay between two rows of drones) -- I took one look at the start and said 'nope'! Though this is actually praise, since I have a relatively low tolerance for frustration games; so this means that the difficulty curve is probably just about right. (Though maybe for a jam you should be erring on the side of easy.)
Since I took a decent number of deaths (I think I saw the retry screen at least once in level 2 and then about twice in levels 3 and 4 each), it did frustrate me a bit that it took a long time to respawn. Though that's probably to give a ejected baby a chance to just barely make it while the stork expires? (Though maybe there could've been a button.)
So _maybe_ not really 'for me', but otherwise this is exemplary of PICO-8: Small, retro, juicy and joyful in its own strange experimental way.
super fun game. and so bloody. great work!
I took almost 10 minutes to complete the game, I must be a bad stork. I never expected the sun to be so harsh. Anyways, nice delivery + flappy bird combo. I'm glad there's retry feature so I could complete this game.
Gosh i'm so bad but it is soo cool ! You did really great. It is juicy, fun, not too easy but yet not too hard. It's frustrating but it kept me going back even if all i can do is die x)
very cute game especially when the bird and baby explode into several gallons of blood hehe! I got a 8:44 first run xD The bird feels very good to control and I liked all the ideas for the hazards. the floppy alligators were my fav >:D
Fun, challenging game. Took me a while but I beat it- 15 minutes and something. Mechanics are pretty smooth for the most part, graphics are quite good for the medium's limitations. Albeit very gory.
That said, this is why I don't live in Florida.
I laughed because it was so dangerous. I like its momentum. It's simple but a bit addictive, it's a game that makes you want to play over and over again :)
This is crazy hard, but crazy fun at the same time. I got stuck on Level 4 and gave up, as I just couldn't get the timing right to drop the babies past the drones, but I was still having tonnes of fun. Somehow, getting shredded by drones in an oversized shower of blood, and watching helplessly as the baby you were carrying gets eaten by alligators in an equally oversized shower of blood, just doesn't get old.
This is a great use of PICO-8, with excellent graphics and sounds effects as well. Great job!
Very cool game, It's fun and very addictive!
I spent more than 1 hour playing, there were many attempts, to reach this result. Captura de Tela (845).png I really liked it!
Wow, that's hard! I have a big soft spot for pixel art and Pico-8 stuff specifically, so I was really happy to see this. It's delightfully silly and, while the keyboard controls are kind of hard to get used to, genuinely very fun to play. I'm glad that respawning and continuing are nice and fast, because I sure lost a lot of storks and babies! Great job!
Very difficult but probably cause I am playing on a keyboard. Still was fun.
@vidarn I'm so glad so many folks felt compelled to try "just one more time"... Thank you for playing!
@poshdan you gave it your best shot! Thank you for playing!
@francis you're right. it seemed like a good idea at the time, because I wanted it to be difficult enough that it couldn't be beaten on the first try. if i had more time I would have added more hazards and enemies instead and tightened up the controls and bird mechanics. Thank you for playing!
@meta-link thank you so much for the kind words and thank you for playing!
@veralos the gators are my favorite part too and i'm glad folks like them, I spent nearly half the jam trying to get them right!! Thank you for playing!
@lcstark There are dozens of us! lol Thanks for giving it your best shot and I'm glad you stuck wihth it long enough to effectively see all of the game content <3
@caeonosphere you're right the lives system is a little unsatisfying. I wanted to punish speedrunners for abusing the revive mechanic but still allow them calculated strategic deaths (the only alternative I could think of would be to reset completed deliveries every death, which i think would unfairly punish *everybody*). Thank you for playing!
@valentinwb So glad you stuck with it! Thank you for playing!
@remco You're totally right about the respawn delay. I wanted to delay for maybe a second but time constraints forced me to keep my original implementation that doesn't allow for bird respawn until all bird gore derenders. Thank you for playing!
@paulhocker Glad you had fun! Thank you for playing!
@bloodbane 10 minutes is a great time! Most streamers took around 15 minutes. One even took nearly 26 minutes. You're practically a baby delivering expert... Thank you for playing!
@0mbre You did great! Thank you for playing!
@itsboats that is an EXCELLENT time for playing it blind. The alligators are my favorite part too, I'm very pleased to hear they're a hit <3 Thank you for playing!
@zefphyer That's an average time so you did great!! There are lots of great reasons not to live in Florida - glad you stuck with it and Thank you for playing!
@zundou it warms my heart when you say something i made makes you want to play it again. Thank you so much for playing <3
@f1krazy you got really far! and basically far enough to see practically all of the content, and I'm happy for that. Thank you for playing!
@psv-games-studio That's an excellent time!! I can't believe you spent an hour on it, that's really nice to hear, I'm glad it could provide some amusement in these trying times <3 Thank you for playing!
@acearcher I'm sure you did great and I'm glad you got a chuckle, Thank you for playing!
Oh my god, I played this game on stream a few weeks ago (sorry for taking so long to review -.-) and it was so much fun! The humour had me laughing my ass off, and the gameplay was difficult but enjoyable. I always felt like I was in control, even when stuff got really busy. Super impressive that you got all of this made not only in the Compo period, but also using PICO-8. Great job!
