I think I might have found a bit of an error.

I was not able to play level 2. When I downloaded it an ran it from my machine, the game just closes when you finish level 1.

when I play from the browser, I get a bit further, I get a whole conversation with the player's dad (who is a bit of a dick, if I am being honest!) and then I can't pick up any papers from the old man, I get a "restart or exit" error box, but I can't hit the buttons and I am locked.

Other than that, I had a blast! I would love to play more! This is a neat addition to the "Physics Driver" genre with a Paperboy mashup!

Cheers! [-LB](https://ldjam.com/users/the-lame-brain/)

EDIT I came back to this because I did not see the Shift+1, Shift+2, Shift+3 tip the first time. This doesn't work on the HTML version because the browser does not read the shift button, but it works great on the downloaded version.

I also had to rate you higher in graphics because I somehow missed the parallax scrolling the first time, but that looks really awesome!

2021-10-05 02:36

it's a bit of hard to control. Never completed the whole routine. Lol But it's truly fun to play!

cireneikual222464 2021-10-05 02:39

As you mentioned, the game got stuck at a black screen for me when transitioning (to level 3 in my case). It was a fun game while it lasted though! Pretty difficult, I found not using a/d to be easier and just slowing things down. I like the little story that goes on.

elveverx 2021-10-05 02:43

I like how consistent the art and music felt it worked together to create a really good mood for the game. I found it very challenging but that's a good thing!

karsinis 2021-10-05 02:47

This was an awesome game! I love the characters and the asset design. The game itself was a bit difficult and I got stuck at the e9nd of the route and didn't know how to progress for a bit. Given some polishing I could definitely see this as a fun mobile game. The physics are well done and it is satisfying to move around the world.

pixelydian 2021-10-05 02:50

Had fun flinging paper everywhere! I had to use the number keys to play each level :) couldn't beat 3 Loved the man's comment about the trailer :)

hcs-hades 2021-10-05 02:54

Pretty great all round! Had some fun playing for sure :)

turncoda 2021-10-05 02:54

I beat levels 1 and 2 but level 3 was too hard for me.

My favorite part was the jump in level 2. Watching the newspapers hover in midair while staying inside the basket felt nice.

I enjoyed the story and I liked the dynamic between the two characters. I wish I could see how it ends.

ruruie 2021-10-05 02:56

Level 2 has some issues. There's two E buttons on the old man, he doesn't give me papers and I run out of time almost immediately and then it freezes. :(

achehex 2021-10-05 03:11

That was actually super fun and endearing. Shout outs to Old man McLudum, may he rest in piece. The physics are kinda wild and unwieldy but that's the appeal of this genre of games and it had me hooked because of that. I didnt use the tilting up and down options much but there's definitely a method to the madness, so I enjoyed that very much. Plus I dunno, it made me want to ride my bike, that has to count for something. right?

In terms of graphics I tend to be a pain in the ass about mixels like those, but the overall aesthetic captured to charm of things like QWOP rather well so I can't be too mad. However the graphics of the final level were bad for the gameplay. There were background elemeents that had the same contrast as playable ground so it was kinda hard to know the path without some trial and error that could've been avoided by lowering the contrast in the background.

Audio was ok, the song didn't bother me and I appreciate the voice acting but specially during the final cutscene it's too repetitive.

Overall I really liked it and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone playing games in the jam. It's a bit unfortunate that the HTML5 version seemed unstable (hehe), but with cutscene and level skipping it's not too bad an issue.

skyward4d 2021-10-05 03:12

Great game, so much fun riding through the construction site!

3mpty 2021-10-05 06:50

Really fun twist on a classic formula, a lot of fun jiggling through each level and the level design was great, there was a good curve of difficulty from start to finish and each level was just bullshit enough to be funny.

I like that there's a story and I'm really happy there was a happy ending for all 3 characters.

ollieoa 2021-10-05 06:53

@3mpty Yep, happy ending. No other endings.

Thanks so much for playing it on stream! Sorry about the scene transition bug. Hopefully I can squish it soon.

xhadie 2021-10-05 09:06

I was laughing way too hard on the first dialogue haha. Love the look of the old man and the sounds that occur while he speaks! Fun little concept - also love the low-resolution art style!

dumrum 2021-10-05 10:31

Hahahaha what a great game! Really nice atmosphere - sound-, music-, art- and storywise. I just needed the front pedal button to do all three levels, but I wouldn't say it's too easy. Enjoyed the story a lot

Still waiting for the wheelie-only run!

bgdc 2021-10-05 10:39

Overall a good game but on level 2 player will inevitably drops 2 to 3 papers because the container is too small .-. and i can't play the downloaded version because the resolution is messed up (playing on 1920x1080 resolution)

heho 2021-10-05 10:45

a very clever idea, worthwhile playing. the graphics are solid, the gameplay is fun, though a little hard. also, and this might seem small, but it is really great to be able to skip dialog. an often forgotten feature that really helps

rafael-garcez 2021-10-05 13:03

this game is hard, but fun =D

westmave 2021-10-05 13:33

Nice visuals and sound. It has good physics to it. Unfortunately I did not come further than the first level. In the second one I could not pickup the paper. Then the restart menu came, but I could not click a button in it: Unbenannt.PNG I really liked the level i could play though

jepjoh2 2021-10-05 13:37

Very hard, but fun game

Sadly I get a consistent crash directly after the fade out after level 2 :(

psv-games-studio 2021-10-05 13:40

A very good game! I found it very challenging and difficult, but this is good as it increases gameplay time.

kalevrk 2021-10-05 15:32

The graphics, writing, sound effects, and music all work nicely together to create a good atmosphere. It took some getting used to the angle up and angle down controls and figuring out how to keep the papers in the holder.

estellad 2021-10-05 15:35

It's fun! I use WASD and arrow keys to play. Maybe this is a little bit hard but I want to play more!

coryru 2021-10-05 18:33

Hey! This is really fun! I may have been way too careful though cause I kept running out of time. Gotta pick up the pace Paper Boy! Small note the E to talk to the oldman was hard to see so I kept blazing past him and having to restart. I think if you had it autofire when you went past him players would be less confused. Great job like I said had fun playing this one.

PS. The old man sound effect made me smile!

aderpychickenstudios 2021-10-05 19:04

Fun little nes style game I really liked the visual aestectic and the music was nice. I thought it was a really cool take on the theme great job!

mishaniks 2021-10-05 19:21

A new chapter of the genre) I enjoyed playing this game ("+" for a story) and want more tasks and maybe different types of delivered objects, and new locations, and two... NO! Three! trailers in a row, and... Such a large field for ideas! Thank you, great job)

fabula-rasa 2021-10-05 19:21

Quite fun to play and challenging to master! The wonky physics made me laugh. I actually managed to keep one newspaper in the basket here:

Screenshot_4.png

The music is fine as well and fitting to the atmosphere. The dad is kinda of a bummer, but the old man pays BEYOND well for delivering papers. 5 bucks per delivery! I wonder how much he charges for a paper

I played the downloadable version and had consistent crashes at the end of the levels: I crashed after the first level, replayed it, didn't crash that time; crashed after finishing the second level, replayed it, didn't crash. Every time it was a full crash to desktop.

stanroy 2021-10-05 20:30

Really nice game, like the music and gameplay. It reminded me of happy wheels :)

whenyoucantfindafriend 2021-10-05 21:04

Super Cute game! Love the bicycle with a cart idea. I played the game in my browser and it works well! It just didn't advance when I beat the level but I reloaded the game and used the number codes. Great Job!

idenoh 2021-10-05 21:33

Love this game, you'd think that hundreds of years of paper delivery would have resulted in improved systems to secure your payload! Really though I enjoyed the game a lot, it plays well and it's super satisfying to land a jump without spilling your papers everywhere.

ollieoa 2021-10-05 23:06

Thank you so much everyone for the lovely comments! I am really unsure about what is giving the game such a hard time on the scene transitions... and why it is so inconsistent for some of you!

I will need to learn a bit more about the Godot build process and debug this heavily. Thanks for letting me know @fabula-rasa about the crash to desktop on Windows. I thought the Windows version would have been a sure thing for stability! I am having real trouble replicating these bugs, though.

If I manage to find something, I will try and update the game for future players!

curleyrach 2021-10-05 23:26

Really enjoyed the gameplay of this and audio and graphics all work well together. The story really tied it all in nicely and the whole thing felt like a complete experience. Nice job!

mickyhc 2021-10-06 00:28

Very enjoyable game, made it through all three levels! Great work Ollie and Bella.

kapricorn-media 2021-10-06 05:45

That was so much fun to play. It can get tricky at parts but when you get used to the mechanics it gets more and more rewarding. Great work on the art and physics engine.

andidebob 2021-10-06 06:25

This is such a cool game! It obviously reminds me a lot of happy wheels, but with a super fun twist! I would love to see what other vehicles the old man employs for his delivery services and when will he expand to like tropical islands and stuff? Seriously I want more!

adrian-guevara 2021-10-06 06:37

I really spected some blood like happy wheels but I liked it xD

connor-magson 2021-10-06 13:03

I couldn't beat the last level but still had a lot of fun! I really loved the dialogue. If you're struggling with the scene transitions you can take a look at the way I handle it, although I did use C#. [For example in this class the GotoMainMenu function changes the scene.](https://github.com/ConnorRowe/LD49-Unstable-Fragile-Payload/blob/main/scripts/InfoScreen.cs) If you're using GD script it will probably be similar.

ollieoa 2021-10-06 13:23

@connor-magson Thanks for sharing! I'm doing a very similar thing, just with an animation.. I am also queue_free()-ing on the deferred process, and maybe that logic isn't appreciated in HTML5... but thank you for the tip - I might look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow, and that example, and see what is wrong!

preda 2021-10-06 14:41

Ugh, I think I broke it. It's a quite fun game. Reminds me of good old happy wheels. Screenshot 2021-10-06 174118.png

ollieoa 2021-10-06 14:44

@preda I have literally no idea how this is possible. Absolutely incredible and gives perfect shitpost energy.

Make sure to refresh/reload and skip to the levels with the number keys!! :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks for checking it out!

spacedinosaur12 2021-10-06 15:16

Very fun game, good job! I also liked the music and audio

macpheetus 2021-10-06 15:19

I'm not a very good paper-boy, Good game, I liked the pixel art and the audio.

nerisma 2021-10-06 15:21

Very good, I had fun playing it :)

quite-good 2021-10-06 16:49

Fun game overall and a nice take on the theme. My one major criticism is that the game viewing window is just too big and I couldn't even see the entire screen at once. Keep pushing those papers!

leuthil 2021-10-06 16:56

A fun and challenging game. The art was good and I like the integration of the story into the game.

toxiccomputer 2021-10-06 16:58

this movement felt incredibly satisfying. Graphics reminded me of Happy Wheels, which was a nice throwback. I think if you continue with the concept after the jam, it could be a great game. One piece of feedback I have is that sometimes the parallax background looked like it was moving to fast. Ohter than that, Great Entry!

xpoho 2021-10-06 16:59

О, это ж мой дед! Как хорошо, что он в свои 95 подрабатывает разносчиком газет. Если бы не он, нашей семье не на что было бы жить. Слава деду!

kamuniaft 2021-10-06 17:13

Awesome work! I've got emotionally connected to mr McLudum, and then.. Liked the game physics, it was quite fun to play. Had to use 1,2,3 keys to switch levels, cause game got stuck between scenes (I played windows build)

louiejams 2021-10-06 18:34

Paper boy with physics! I love the idea! Very funa nd challenging!

str8griz 2021-10-06 19:48

Super fun, very happy wheels vibe. I love the old mans laugh. Levels didn't load for me after completing but I went back and used the 1,2,3 keys to play

recher 2021-10-06 20:17

I encountered some bugs as other people said. But it was not too much annoying.

It is very frustrating to have McLudum giving you so many newspapers at start, and seeing nearly half of them immediatly lost, because the carriage can not hold them all.

I did not managed to get past level 2, but I'm not good at this sort of games.

There seems to be a story with your father, that's always good to add this in a game.

Nice game, even if I'm not skilled enough for it.

codeman1010 2021-10-06 20:51

Definitely a bit buggy, but I did make it through a level and the concept was really fun!

morhailen 2021-10-06 21:16

Something reminded of an old amusing game - Elastomania.

kukurammus 2021-10-06 21:42

Cannot pickup papers on the second level, but first one was pretty entertaining I would say :)

lachlanm 2021-10-07 00:30

I really liked this game, it immediately reminded me of playing happy wheels back when that was still popular. Loved the challenge of keeping the trailer upright, although the game crashed once I finished level 2. Played it again though and was able to skip using the number keys. Great job!

pnikav 2021-10-07 01:36

Good implementation and concept! Not a bad atmosphere, I liked the graphics and music. Keep up the good work! Good job, guys

ollieoa 2021-10-07 05:39

___

NOTE

As a line in the sand for the comments, it is at this point that I fixed the scene transition bug (I think). Turns out if you were really good at the game, you were rewarded with no bugs because needing to restart the level broke the scene transition script :stuck_out_tongue:

___

If anyone has any crashes below this line, please let me know, but I can only hope it won't be about the scene transitions!

tsunscreen 2021-10-07 05:50

Solid game that fits the theme. I see I'm not the first person to be reminded of happy wheels lol

nardandas 2021-10-07 06:23

Fun little game, reminded me of the old flash and mobile bike games!

ollieoa 2021-10-07 09:34

Alright guys, lock in humour now

Thanks for all the support

muros 2021-10-07 12:08

A very good game. Interesting though not new gameplay combined with an interesting plot. Grandpa's design is very cute. This game is really fun to play.

fear-games 2021-10-07 12:12

Fun game. good concept

maximbegunov 2021-10-07 12:26

Very fun mechanic! I like that there are different tactics that you can use on diffrent road structures. Sometimes its better to take it slow and sometimes you should just rush and pray to catch back any papers you can.

jose-bonilla 2021-10-07 18:10

Nice game, I liked it a lot... I wonder if you brainstormed/developed your idea for the 'Delivery' theme, but when 'Unstable' came out, you decided to adapt it. In any case, it's a good game, congrats.

stefanie-leitch 2021-10-07 21:47

Great game! Loved the graphics, the dialogue was awesome... I'll be honest I didn't finish it because it was HARD lol but great work!

intodarkness 2021-10-08 09:42

I really like the game the WebOS makes it fast and easy to try . Not easy to play but fun . Very nice dialog system . Nicely done ! :)

nikolay-zapolnov 2021-10-08 10:12

Funny game! Definitely nails the theme!

javicoder 2021-10-08 11:53

I liked it, I love the graphics and the clarity with which they are made. It is a bit difficult, but it is enjoyed well, very fun!

justcamh 2021-10-08 15:02

Hey matey, thanks for submitting your game to the stream! It was a ton of fun, good job with your game! Here's a link to the vod if you'd like to rewatch; https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1170771627

cituchi 2021-10-08 15:22

interesting game, I like it!

jpatchz 2021-10-08 17:43

Graphics are very cute. Gameplay is also very innovative.

ibrahim-oezhan 2021-10-08 20:13

Pros: + Nice graphics + I really like the gameplay + Cute music (Did you make it?)

Bugs: - The pause menu opens with ESC but thats the same key that is used to get out of fullscreen on the web build - You can loose multiple papers right after getting them by already holding the key to move

image_2021-10-08_222128.png

Ah yes

ollieoa 2021-10-09 00:41

@ibrahim-oezhan Yes! Just made a cheeky groove in beepbox.com. A great service, especially for gamejams.

Thanks for your feedback!

osh-studio 2021-10-09 10:33

So nostalgic of balance bike type flash games I used to love playing growing up. So good, perfect use of the theme with an original idea. Great visuals and easy mechanics. GG

monado 2021-10-09 10:50

Really wacky and fun game! It was a challenge to keep as many newspapers on hand as possible, and the levels really proved to be a fun challenge to overcome! That construction site level really had me going for a while, but overall super great work!

denzil-gomes 2021-10-09 11:33

Very nice game, The bike controls and physics are really nice. Found the best way for me to play was a combination of arrows and WASD. I couldn't get past the construction level unfortunately so not sure how the story pans out but that's a nice addition to the game and reward for progress. Well done

etrealjunior 2021-10-09 17:57

Hi, I want to congratulate you for the game, it brought me good laughs and fun, remembering a lot the series of flash games "Happy Wheels", impossible to play and not be happy, beautiful arts and great context, a big hug.

jvdwijk 2021-10-10 12:40

This was a very neat entry! Loved the happy wheels vibe it gave off and the small story was also pretty nice!

Really enjoyed going through the 3 levels!

sarafilipa 2021-10-10 16:28

Really good game. :) I second the others who mentioned it being kinda hard but that just makes you want to play more and more. :) Here I go trying lvl 3 again... (Solid graphics, audio, dialogue... very polished overall!)

sestren 2021-10-10 22:51

I tried really hard on the third level, but could not seem to keep even one paper from surviving. I'll have to watch a spoiler, because it seems like the story is worth finishing. Great entry!

pat-cleaver 2021-10-11 10:10

very nice take on the game. Didn't make it past the construction site, but I may have to return to it. For someone just starting out making games this is very impressive, congrats!

beats 2021-10-11 14:38

Reminded me of Happy Wheels, challenging three levels with a backstory, very solid entry allround, thanks for sharing on stream.

honey-pony 2021-10-11 23:37

The physics in this game are a lot of fun. There is just something exhilarating about accelerating the bike and then going down a hill with way too much momentum. The way the bike wheels spin complements this well; overall the bike is just very satisfying.

I definitely had fun beating the first two levels--the mania of trying to maintain a good amount of momentum while not losing all the papers was pretty neat. So far I have not been able to beat the third level. One thought on the third level is that it is hard to tell the foreground from the background.

At first I was annoyed that there was a timer, but I do think it actually is pretty important to force the player to go fast. The feeling of rushing without knowing if I'll be able to keep all my papers in is a pretty nice feeling. I do wonder if it would be good to let the player keep playing after they lose, though, just so they can play with the physics and learn the level layout a bit.

steve7411 2021-10-12 14:39

This game was really fun to play, and a good implementation of the theme. That ending :(

alexthehuman2 2021-10-12 14:40

I really enjoyed the game, reminds me a bit of happy wheels, the pixel art and all the sound blends in together into this wonderful work. I genuinely can't think of any improvements other than just making more levels, maybe think about an endless mode! But yea, good job on the jam, well done!

anoif 2021-10-16 22:14

Nice game, like the gameplay.

wyatt 2021-10-20 00:42

Poor old man McLudum! Haha thanks that was fun

kage 2021-10-21 15:39

Fun game! Great job!

itsboats 2021-10-21 19:28

Great nostalgic fun! Add a bunch more levels and I'm buying it on steam xD The bike physics were really well done and you had a really nice difficult curve in the limited levels

Rest in peace Old Man McLudum, your legacy lives on <3
