LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Miroir du Mort by graebor 2015-04-22T23:30:00

So polished! Good level design too. I like the fact that you're also damaged by the light, as if you're the same creature as your enemies. Kinda reminds me of Boktai because you use light to defeat an enemy, you require some thinking to pass a level, and (specifically in Boktai 2) your weapon can be your enemy. All in all, fun game!

Nunchukkats by invi 2015-04-21T23:32:00

This game is HARD! Still fun though. Though I can't really recognize the cats without the meows. Also, the precision needed to use the nunchuks is hard for me.

War of Ideas by jackyjjc 2015-04-20T02:05:00

It's a bit hard to see which country you're clicking. Also, it's confusing at first when it's not obvious as to how to perform an action. Still, it was fun. I like how each country has attributes that mirror (to an extent) their attitudes in real life. I also like how simplistic the UI is, once you get the hang of it.

Animal Brutality by JakeL168 2015-04-20T11:49:00

Definitely fun, because where else can use a giraffe as a weapon!? The graphics are simple, but fit right into the game. I'd suggest you go for black humor, though, maybe by using a bone breaking sound effect when hitting an animal, and perhaps adding high-pressure blood particle effect. the latter might take up development time, though.

You Can Shave the Baby by chikun Dev Team 2015-05-01T16:05:00

It's quirky, but fun! Didn't expect a WarioWare-style game here. Though it wasn't clear when I had to use arrow keys and most of the interface focused on the cursor.

Super Beanja by orukinawa 2015-04-20T12:04:00

Best weapon among the entries I've played! Although the visual mood is kinda dark, the weapon kinda takes that away, so I can't really say how I feel about that. Awesome graphics, though maybe you can find a bit more time developing weapons (like maybe use the fact that the player is a bean). All in all, fun game! Deadpool would be proud.

Nature's Assault by Ptolo 2015-04-20T07:50:00

I like how you don't just manage the tribes, but also the land itself. I also like the procedural generation for the land. It keeps the replayability fresh. That said, I wish there would be more explanations as to what each action does. Also, perhaps put a bit more emphasis on how much Mana you have left, since it feels like it blended too well with the other UI elements. One more thing, this may just be me not liking god games that much, but it felt a bit tedious after a while, considering that how long you play depends on how fast you press. Overall, good game. I can see a lot of effort put into making this.

Battle of Tolzford by Franklin's Ghost 2015-04-22T11:37:00

I like the aesthetics and humor. It really helps the unconventional weapon stand out. The graphics are simple, but works out well. Though it doesn't seem that the boss deserves its title...

Stoned Scarecrow by gillenew 2015-04-20T11:21:00

Gorgeous sprites! Also, weirdass setting, definitely good! Somehow reminded me of Trio the Punch, in a good way. Although I wish I could've fired more. The firing rate IMO makes it really hard to get XP. And the lack of music makes the whole thing feel a little empty, so I think that having music would make it way more enjoyable.

Protector Of The Shrine by maunovaha 2015-04-21T23:53:00

It was quite difficult for me. Using a mouse in an RPG where your main weapon is close-ranged is not fun, though that may be what retro games were. The song made everything hilarious, though I can't really see it as a main weapon.

Get Them Fed! - by Effinjay Studios by Kassimkot 2015-04-20T12:09:00

That's certainly an unconventional weapon! The shading also works with the absurd setting. Though I feel that the music kinda ruins the mood. I feel somber while playing it. Also, maybe have a sound effect when the ball-monster-thingy eats the egg? It would give the thingies a sense of depth, because right now all I see are red circles.

EXECUTION by stray 2015-04-20T11:37:00

Awesome graphics! That's definitely the best part of the game. Also, the mood (and the background music accompanying it) fits nicely with the message you're trying to send. Although the ending can be interpreted as a weapon (in the sense of "how do you stop this", rather than "how do you fight this"), it takes the player out of the game, and the connection with the theme is quite tedious.

When All You Have is a Racket by UekiShurei 2015-04-20T08:18:00

@Leandrus I was going for the spirit of how ridiculous a bullet hell can get. I'm glad you liked it.
@jackyjjc I honestly thought the music was the worst part of the game, but I'm glad it fits. Thanks. I'm thinking of updating the link later to make it standalone, because I didn't know how to do so when I submitted this.
@Muffin thanks. I intended to show the spirit of playing badminton. I'm glad that went through.

When All You Have is a Racket by UekiShurei 2015-04-20T11:23:00

I updated the link. Now it's standalone, so you don't need to install anything anymore.

When All You Have is a Racket by UekiShurei 2015-04-20T15:07:00

@ajopart The speed at which a shuttlecock is launched is actually slightly randomized, so maybe I'll increase the range more for post-jam.
@OccamRazor Thanks! I'm glad I made this game.
@orukinawa Thanks for pointing that out! If you notice, the Score doesn't restart at 0, and because the amount of shuttlecocks and zombies spawned is affected by the score, the result is that you basically continue the game, not retry. I will fix this for post-jam.

When All You Have is a Racket by UekiShurei 2015-04-22T11:27:00

@murilo @Bergara Glad you didn't break your fingers in the process haha.

When All You Have is a Racket by UekiShurei 2015-04-22T11:29:00

@Franklin's Ghost, I thought that jump smashing by itself wouldn't be fun, and people would just stick to smashing on the ground if I didn't add something. Glad you like it.

Tongue Lash by benjamck 2015-04-21T23:47:00

Wow. This is nightmare fuel. And I don't like horror. So I might be biased. Anyways, good job taking your time sculpting the models! It, along with the growl, really adds to the creepiness. It really sells as an horror game, so it wasn't fun for me.

What Lurks in the Dark by MoogleSensei 2015-04-21T23:59:00

Great game, if you're into horror. Also, it wasn't very clear as to what exactly I should do. And there doesn't seem to be a way to fight against the monsters, so I don't know if you can call the flashlight a weapon.

Radisheriff by Ourson 2015-05-01T14:45:00

Fun game! There's no music, but perhaps it doesn't really need any. Solid gameplay, no bugs as far as I can see, nice graphics.

Agent Of Souls by Norbex 2015-04-22T12:03:00

Good game. It's just that it's too hard to pass the 4th level (though maybe I just looked at it the wrong way).

Flash Escape by scottthoo 2015-04-21T23:39:00

Oddly, I can see Keiji Inafune laughing here. Anyways, fun game! Though I don't really like platform hells like I Wanna Be The Guy. Using dashes is not that unique (or maybe that's just me), but it's certainly an unconventional weapon.
Maybe you could put a game over screen so you get breaks between continues (especially since you're going to listen to the same music all the time).

Aliens! I need your D.N.A. by DNAteamld32 2015-05-01T14:37:00

I like the mechanics, graphics & sound. It's just that it's hard when you have to choose the right genes, learn what ammo does what and avoid enemies all at the same time. Perhaps a description of what each ammo does, and how much damage it does to the aliens, would make it easier.

The Power Of Love by KunoNoOni 2015-04-20T09:02:00

This seems to be your first 3D game in LD. While I applaud your effort in trying Unity out, I personally would stick to 2D, especially in a Compo and if you're not familiar with an engine's workflow. I had the same idea, but backed out before I started.
I like the idea of using the power of love to turn zombies into humans. It's a good look at the society nowadays.

Bloomp Purple by murilo 2015-04-22T23:15:00

Smooth movement, nice weapons (the only weapon that's not really unconventional is the bomb), great level design (and thanks for the ability to use 1-7, though that could've been more obvious in-game). The music is a little repetitive, though. And indicating that you've won instead of looping back to the beginning would've been good. But good game!

LD33 — You are the Monster

B(L)OB by Nikteddy92 2015-09-05T05:21:00

Fun to play! The music fits the game perfectly. Though I didn't get the purpose of the different-colored liquids other than to increase Bob's density. Nice graphics, and the scientists raising their hands running, added with the music, makes it look as if they're dancing to the beat.
P.S.: JABBERWOCKY Island is a relaxing place.

Frankengirl Free-For-All by Frump 2015-08-27T07:57:00

Nice! I like d music as well. it's really fun but it's a lil' too easy to defend myself

My planet needs me! by reiknight 2015-09-11T13:02:00

Nice music and concept! I can definitely feel the Monsters Inc. vibe here. One thing to improve, though, would be for the guards to have a turning animation so the players would know when he's going to turn, reducing the amount of trial-and-error needed.

Going Downtown by justinooncx 2015-09-10T15:07:00

Great twist on the theme! Desperate people do whatever it takes to survive, even if it means becoming a monster. The only issue I have is the difficulty in playing this on PC due to the distance of the buttons, so I'd need a few precious seconds to move my mouse to the right button.

The Devil's Daughter by SinclairStrange 2015-09-10T15:19:00

Very polished! Even though perhaps it's a bit too hard for me, I still enjoyed playing it. The voiceover actually adds to the game's enjoyment, when voiceover is usually difficult to pull off well, especially in 72 hours.

Where My Eggs At!? by Kassimkot 2015-09-10T14:33:00

Great game, although it was a bit difficult for me, what with a big hitbox fighting against a bullet hell with no mercy invincibility. All that you need to do is to polish the game (unless you want to develop it further, in which case go for it!).

Hug me, please! by Geared Games 2015-09-11T13:23:00

I can feel the high production value here. Good job! Though I didn't know that wrecking houses gives you points at first.

The Good Monster by UekiShurei 2015-08-26T02:46:00

Sorry about that, it was working yesterday, so I don't know why it doesn't today. I figured it must be Google, so I hosted the Web version in itch.io instead. I removed the embed in the process, since I couldn't find out how I can embed itch.io games in Ludum Dare.

The Good Monster by UekiShurei 2015-09-04T03:25:00

@MrNyarlathotep Thanks for checking this game out, and for the feedback. I had that in my mind during the jam, so perhaps it's a good mechanic to add. Adding more options for each tool is a good way to create varied playstyles, much like an MMORPG.
Regarding difficulty, my main concern was that the player can't spawn enough minions or use the other weapons quickly enough in the later levels. Thanks again for the feedback.

The Good Monster by UekiShurei 2015-09-05T06:10:00

@reiknight Thanks for the feedback. I had a playtester who said the exact opposite of what you said. I did put instructions in the post-jam version, though.
@liquidmedia I'm pretty sure it also works in IE, but who uses IE? It's WebGL, though, and Chrome should support WebGL, so I don't get it doesn't work there.

The Good Monster by UekiShurei 2015-09-11T12:56:00

@goodbadokay Thanks for the heads up! Regarding #1, I didn't have time to think of that, so thanks for suggesting that. Regarding #2, I suppose it's the problem with using very rudimentary pathfinding. I want to avoid using things like A* because it might freeze the game if there are too many pathfinding calls.
@mikethingsbetter Thanks for the feedback. I realize the lack of polish on the programming side. I'll keep that in mind for post-jam.

The Good Monster by UekiShurei 2015-09-11T15:04:00

@MikeEnoch There's a fullscreen button at the lower-right corner of the game frame. You can use that to play the game on fullscreen.

The Good Monster by UekiShurei 2015-09-13T10:04:00

@Aaronos Thanks. Maybe I should do so. Or maybe I should also have keys bound to them.

Shadows and Cats by MoreRPG Team 2015-09-13T09:54:00

I like the fact that the people actually talk, even if I don't understand what they're talking about. Though I would like a lose condition to balance the game out.

Master's Treasure by Aaranos 2015-09-10T15:55:00

Like the others said, the physics are funky, though it does give the game some humor. Also, damn awesome bassline.

Hellish Grind by Jeedan 2015-09-11T13:16:00

Though it's a tried-and-true formula, it's still fun to play. I like the feel of the game. Though I would advise polishing the game later and not focusing too much on programming that you neglect the other aspects. Adding a block of backstory text would help, and adding sound would make the grind less tedious. Also if you can, put some music in it (or, since this is a jam, use free music tracks) so it would enhance the feel and perhaps add some subtle backstory.

Reverse MMO by neroyow 2015-09-10T14:28:00

I would like to see more innovations in terms of game mechanics. But good game! An easy way out when making a game around the theme is to make the player a boss-level monster, so good job ditching that.

The Supper by jrhee 2015-09-11T12:30:00

Fun game, despite the dark setting. It really prompts you to plan your moves accordingly. It also feels a little like a board game (though implementing this as a board game probably isn't going to be easy). I don't have any improvement suggestions, because it's just that good!

First Day At The Job - A Monsters Story by Meursault 2015-09-11T13:09:00

Reminds me of a particular Flash game where each thing you do produces an ending. It also gives the monster a goofy twist, so congrats!

RAWR by MrNyarlathotep 2015-09-11T12:42:00

I like the fact that this game relies on mouse alone. It gets around the keyboard layout conflict. Though I'd have preferred if the monster didn't look like a stock capsule mesh with textures on it (it's understandable, though; making 3D objects requires time and skills, since it's a totally different way of making art).

Fireapocalypseeverseen!!! by DAT.NOT.MY.GAME! 2015-09-11T12:52:00

Really polished graphics, and fun and interesting gameplay! It was a little hard controlling the fella on Android, though.

Werewolf Quest by Yrr 2015-09-05T05:23:00

Everything in the game is awesome! Though I was stuck trying to get to the blue switch (probably missed one). Looking forward to post-jam.

60 Seconds Troll by Falez 2015-09-10T14:40:00

Great gameplay and animation! I saw bits of both DOTA and Half-Minute Hero there. And, most importantly, the player feels like a player rampaging through enemy camps playing this game.

Open the door and smile by Arnage 2015-09-10T15:51:00

Gorgeous graphics and great story, though I couldn't really get what I had to do.

P.S.: Initially when I ran the game, the game kept getting inactive (as in it kept getting switched to another window). I had remote host apps running, so I stopped them. Now it works wonders. Makes me wonder why Unreal doesn't like remote hosts.

Dude, Stop by Patomkin 2015-09-07T23:04:00

Simple but fun! I was stuck at the salt & pepper part, so I didn't get why I could get past it. Still, nice jab at the player for being jerks.

Alien Murder Simulator by MikeEnoch 2015-09-13T10:02:00

I'm totally waiting for this game's post-jam! I like how your extra life depends on how many pods you made.

LD37 — One room

Dark room by cushycode 2016-12-14T10:26:00

Nice graphics, felt a little too easy. If you could kill the ambient light so the only light source is the flashlight, I bet it would be better. Otherwise, I don't need the flashlight to find the cat.

Space Junk by imphenzia 2016-12-29T13:02:00

Fun game. Nice graphics too. Hard to believe it's a compo entry.

Room of Slimes by xiaolee92 2016-12-13T02:21:00

I felt like the slimes got a cheap hit on me sometimes, but the game is still fun. Kinda like a clicker game, only with a losing condition, and keyboard-friendly.

PS: is this the genocide of the slime clan?

ReMember by Lunique 2016-12-13T08:30:00

Grossly underrated (at my time of voting). I thought it was really fun! The shapes being simple helped me to remember the sequences more easily. Still took 2 minutes to get to the end, though.

Shoot&Scoot by Leonatic 2016-12-13T01:54:00

Fun for competing against others. If you're going to improve on this game, why not add online leaderboards? That could be fun.

Also, it seems the best way to get the fastest time is to stay on one place, so it might be good to force the player to move. Like, you cannot shoot while standing still or something.

Escape The Room by egordorichev 2016-12-13T09:44:00

I like the dynamic lighting. That must have been hard to do, especially if the game is all procedural. No idea what the rocks are for, though.

Miawflex by miaw 2016-12-13T08:50:00

Simple game, works like endless runner games on the mobile, really fun to see the Miaws bounce around after you catch it.

Roomulus by mutuware 2016-12-14T10:24:00

11/10 would spam ._. emojis.

Chamber Talk by invi 2016-12-13T02:07:00

That was fun. Awesome writing. Laughed my ass off a few times. Got killed 14 times though, before I got to the ending.

Patch-A-Room by JakeL168 2016-12-13T03:51:00

Who knew that "One Room" could also mean making one room?

Great work.

The One Room Dungeon by justinooncx 2016-12-13T01:42:00

Simple concept for a retro genre. Really mobile friendly. Wish I knew what's the difference between each enemy.

BTW, "You were driven insane" cracked me up. Usually in a game like this, you would die.

This One Room by MoonlightBomber 2016-12-13T08:17:00

Donkey singing Through the Fire and Flames and drag queens dancing to PPAP? Hoo boy!

Throw the Cat! by ahmad4zan 2016-12-13T02:13:00

The lack of instructions makes the game really confusing, but once you know what to do (throw the grey cat to the box, and throw the black cat to the side), the game becomes fun. Great for short bursts of gaming.

Try to avoid default graphics, though. It makes the game look cheap, even if it really isn't.

PS: whenever I look at your avatar, I feel like screaming "Objection!".

Kak Yah Nasi Lemak by UekiShurei 2016-12-14T03:52:00

Sorry for the order bug. I had problems destroying them once I don't need it (the game thinks it's already destroyed when it isn't).

I think I'm just going to disable the orders instead, since each customer has a maximum number of orders.

Kak Yah Nasi Lemak by UekiShurei 2016-12-14T03:57:00

Also, glad you guys think the food looks tasty. The real life version is also tasty, provided you can stand a pinch of shrimp paste (that thing stinks, but not to a durian's level).

Jelly Bomb by spatanz 2016-12-13T06:49:00

It looks so polished. Also, the patterns for the bomb explosion makes this kinda like an art game. You can do so many patterns here, especially considering it's a realtime simulation game.

One Room Hotel by TerraCottaFrog 2016-12-19T01:27:00

Fun game. Kinda wish I could buy whatever room I want, though. That cash I collected seems useless.

Oath by asyzruffz 2016-12-13T07:50:00

The game felt a little too short. Also no feedback on being hit. Otherwise, I think it has the potential to become something fun. Also, love the animation.

Loop Hell by axoona 2016-12-19T08:36:00

Gave up looking for an ending after 3 tries, but I really like the graphics. Also, kind of expected a point-and-click adventure eventually.

The Last Fish by PickleCrew 2016-12-13T08:44:00

The owner of the fish is a monster. Quick, kill him before he spawns!

Joking aside, interesting concept, awesome graphics and sound. I like how the aquarium gets dirtier dy day 3.

Interoom by Hexcolyte 2016-12-13T07:55:00

The minimalistic art really brings the focus into the gameplay. You can get locked if you go to the shot panel before any enemy spawns, though.

The music fits in really well with the minimalistic art.

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Orbits by tuism 2017-12-07T06:17:53Z

Best LD #40 I've played so far! I keep having the urge to beat my own high score (which was 3, by the way; I couldn't react fast enough when the planets collided). Beautiful graphics, pleasant audio, innovative gameplay... I got no complaints.

Curse of the Brew by Ilseroth 2017-12-07T02:01:02Z

Fun game! I can't really see the effects of the potion, though. Probably because the furthest I went to is the 2nd floor. Going for maximum damage while timing the dodge is tough, but I could probably just play with the Minotaur if I'm patient enough.

Aurora by AkirAssasin 2017-12-08T01:21:38Z

I like how there's a sound cue for everything. It's minimalistic, but when combined with audio, the experience becomes rich, almost as if I'm watching someone paint in water.

I would love a reload option, though.

Overcome by Darkness by ueki_shurei2006 2017-12-06T00:40:08Z

@ilseroth Unfortunately, that waggling is not intentional at all. It's probably the effect of using root motion animation, but I couldn't fix the waggling at all in development. At least, not without making my own animation.

@miaw I used to set the camera that way, but it made the field way more unpredictable, because you can't see the projectiles coming at you. But I agree. I could've at least just put the character in the title screen, for example.

Overcome by Darkness by ueki_shurei2006 2017-12-07T08:05:07Z

@nikorasuchan Noted. I played around with the animation a bit after the jam, and I noticed that the walking animation got less awkward when I didn't let the hip joint determine the forward direction. Thanks for the advice.

Overcome by Darkness by ueki_shurei2006 2017-12-09T01:00:18Z

@scowling_pastry Thanks for the comment! Regarding the sword, after I realized the spotty detection, I had wanted to change the detection system to a separate collider that basically says "hit whatever is in front of the player", but I didn't have the time to put it in. As for the animations, they look good because they're taken from the Mixamo animation/character library. I can't take credit for that. Still, I chose animations that best fit an action (and considering that there are a lot of animations to choose from, I'm glad you liked the result).

Miiiaaawww by miaw 2017-12-07T01:08:46Z

That was fun! You need to be pretty precise, though. And like the others have mentioned, a gauge bar would have been better than numbers.

I would like to add, though, that I can't see the theme being implemented in the game.

Don't Sink by alvinasiaten 2017-12-05T05:52:52Z

I'm not quite sure how to evade the cannonballs, but I love the art style! And the game is definitely challenging.

Zombeer by justinooncx 2017-12-09T01:08:55Z

Fun game! I like how the effects of being drunk are shown on the screen. I'm terrible at it, though. My score is 999.

Tank Thunder by net3ton 2017-12-07T05:45:33Z

It's a fun game! It's like Enter the Gungeon, but you only have 1 gun, and you have things that slow you down that you have to get rid of quickly. Once you get the hang of it, though, the game gets really easy. Once you get past the initial horde (which you can manipulate by just having them chase you around, grabbing as few orbs as possible), all that's left are the enemies that spawn from a single spawn point (this is a bug, I guess) and remaining orbs, which you can clear while waiting for enemies to spawn so the map isn't littered by death traps.

My suggestion is to increase the spawn rate the more enemies the player kills or the more orbs the player sends through the portal.

IntenSEAty by Casper 2017-12-07T05:57:51Z

My opinion is similar to the others. Awesome graphics, awesome and non-grating audio, only gameplay that doesn't show the theme well and is a little clunky. Perhaps an indicator of the spawn rate increasing would help show the theme.

After some time, I would just clear the bottom half of the screen while the enemies at the top fire ahead.

Having different behavioral patterns on the enemies might make it more interesting, but I understand that there isn't much time to develop multiple enemies.

TECHNOCIDE by NikorasuChan 2017-12-08T01:15:23Z

I was quite immersed when playing it. Shows how polished the game is. Awesome! I love the Doom-meets-roguelike feel.

Snowballing Out of Control! by Shipshape Detour 2017-12-07T05:30:03Z

Cool game (no pun intended)! I do notice, though, that there's no real penalty to being slow, so what I did was get as far as I can with a small snowball, then, if I feel that I'm losing control of the snowball, I would purposely hit some snow. The snowball would gain a bigger collider, but I also wouldn't have much ground to cover before the finish line.

How do you make a game using Java, though? I'm curious. I saw some people doing the same thing, and I also saw a few submissions here that use Java.

Oh, and the game reminds me of Antarctic Adventure on the NES.

@North Chu Thanks for commenting. I only had 2 hours available for art assets, so that was the best I could do. I spent too much time programming.

@justinooncx You're right. Looking at the genres combined should tell a player what the game is about. I figured I should get a prototype out first before polishing it. Thanks for the feedback!

@NikorasuChan Thanks for the input. The idea of survivors helping you gather resources sounds great. And you're right about the cow. I think I should change that part so you get consumable items instead of eating automatically. That would open up the possibility of crafting with food as ingredients, although it would probably take the clicking aspect away a bit.
