LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

PIXELSPACE by davecheesefish 2010-08-22T22:47:00

I found that I really spent a lot more time shooting enemies than using them against each other. I wasn't actually too sure how that worked - sometimes they followed me, and other times not, so it was hard to get them to collide by anything but an accident. Otherwise, it played nice and felt nice. Good job!

Fight Chickens With Chickens by Sos 2010-08-23T00:21:00

I liked this one. The animation of feet spinning in a wheel like that was pretty hilarious. The idea of sticking to ceilings like that was also pretty cool! I almost beat it, but I couldn't get the last two nests (they were the ones up on the top-left).

Wenemies -- The Weapon Enemy Simulator by vitae 2010-08-22T23:36:00

I was looking forward to trying this, but when I ran it, it went into fullscreen and just stayed black. In fact, I couldn't alt+tab out, or ctrl+alt+delete or ctrl+shift+escape. I had to hard reboot my computer after waiting a minute or two. This has happened with other games for me, though, so I doubt it's your fault.

Exterminate 48 by Codexus 2010-08-23T01:03:00

The game played well, and everything worked as it should. My only real problem was that I found the AI to be more random than anything. Almost every time I lost, it felt less like I had messed up and more like "why didn't that robot shoot like it normally does?" If the AI were a bit more consistent, solving the puzzles would have felt like less of a game of chance.
Either way, for 48 hours of work, it's great. Thanks for the game :)

Chassis Commander by zorbathut 2010-08-23T15:20:00

I thought it was pretty fun. Sometimes I got a notice that the ammo I had selected was unusable, and I wasn't really sure what I could do about that, so maybe adding onto that message what is required to use the ammo would be good. Otherwise I quite liked it. I see the link to your source code there, but you might want to include it as an official link labelled "source" just for the sake of clarity.

LunarMind by Gobo 2010-08-23T15:32:00

The idea was interesting, but there just wasn't all that much going on, unfortunately. I also found the controls a bit weird - mind controlling felt kind of awkward and I found myself having to keep jumping to get over things instead of just getting over it smoothly. Hopefully you can turn this into something a little more complete eventually!

Purple by roBurky 2010-08-23T01:41:00

Even despite the lack of goal, it feels really nice. The movement and graphics are really, really well done, and I like that the sounds are slightly different each time. This could be really cool if you expand it a little further.

ARCANE by Neonlare 2010-08-23T00:39:00

The graphics are definitely old-school. I found it really difficult to aim, however - since you can only rotate in the eight cardinal directions, it makes it very difficult to hit enemies, especially when they're somewhat small. The mechanic for picking up enemy shot types was a little hard for the same reason, but it was a good idea.
The inclusion of multiplayer is great. I didn't get to test it since nobody's around in the wee hours of the morning, but the it's pretty neat that you included it at all.
Also, don't forget to include your source code!

Unarmed and Dangerous by bluescrn 2010-08-22T21:32:00

I thought the idea was really good, but I found myself struggling with the controls. It's probably my fault, I can never get used to isometric controls, but I almost feel like a top-down view would have made it easier for me to play. As well, the view was small enough that I often didn't know I was jumping right into the way of an enemy, although that was also part of the strategy, so it's sort of a moot point, I suppose.

Zombies as Weapons by Surrealix 2010-08-23T00:29:00

Great concept, and well-coded from the looks of it. It's a shame it doesn't have anything much more than the bare basics, but hey, it's pretty good for 48 hours of work.

Odd Castle Wars by Vladp995 2010-08-22T21:59:00

Unfortunately I couldn't see anything at all - it was just a big white canvas with some dividing lines, the word "wait", and lifebars. I guess maybe it was my computer, so I didn't rate it.

Singularity Smash by quin 2010-08-23T01:08:00

As much as the graphics are simplistic, it's definitely better than having ugly graphics. The gameplay was nice, and all in all I liked it. My only complaints are that it felt strange having the ship always face one way, and that the cursor can go way beyond the screen, which makes it hard to find sometimes.

48 Hours Later by mikeysee 2010-08-22T21:16:00

Grisly! Pretty fun, though. The controls were a little awkward, though - I felt squished using the arrow keys and mouse at the same time, since I'm right-handed.

Basketball girl by JDruid 2010-08-22T22:58:00

If it was a little longer, it would have been great. It took a bit of getting used to how weird it was, but after that I quite enjoyed it. The music was nice. It could have used some more sound effects, and those that were present could have been better. All in all it was a pretty decent little game.

Undertone Continuum by zigs 2010-08-23T15:45:00

For some reason the mouse wasn't locking to the screen's centre, so I found it really difficult to aim around. I also found the controls a bit awkward. I think it was a neat idea, and it seemed to work pretty well, but it just got so complicated with all of those factors that I couldn't really play it.

Illusion by sinalta 2010-08-23T01:50:00

I liked the idea, but you really can beat everything with the third illusion.
I could definitely see this working well as a puzzle-type game - maybe the different spells are limited to a certain number of uses per level?

Rainbow Hero by chaotikZA 2010-08-23T00:41:00

Download is broken. Let me know if you fix it so I can test this out ([email protected]).

Rainbow Hero by chaotikZA 2010-08-24T15:31:00

Glad the download is up now. The game was quite fun! At first it was a little annoying that you only have one life bar through the whole game, but now that I see how long it is, I think that was actually a pretty good decision. The graphics were obviously not award-winning, but they worked, and so long as I could tell the difference between the zombie types (which I could), it's fine. The title screen image of double rainbow zombies is hilarious, although I have to wonder if you have rights to that image.

Rainbow Hero by chaotikZA 2010-08-23T00:41:00

Download is broken. Let me know if you fix it so I can test this out (thelastbanana@hotmail.com).

Maze Shooter by Yoni 2010-08-23T15:53:00

The idea fits the theme well, and it was pretty well-executed. I would have liked movement to be a bit smoother, however, and I found the mazes were often too difficult to line enemies up in, while other times an entire line of enemies would kill themselves. Great job anyway!

Spacenoid by Manuel Magalhães 2010-08-22T22:36:00

It was fun for a little time-waster, for sure. It just wasn't anything all that new.
Also, the music was getting on my nerves a bit, being the same 5 notes over and over. Although, I suppose the original Space Invaders only had the 4 :P

SpaceFreak Snack by DeathBySnail 2010-08-22T21:43:00

I found the jump sound to be a bit annoying. The main issue I had was that the jumps were always the same height (as far as I could tell, anyway) which made it a little too difficult to actually land on enemies.

Alien Parasite by itzmattu 2010-08-22T23:43:00

Looks cool! Good luck finishing it up :)

Tacticool by Flyboy 2010-08-22T23:05:00

Really neat idea, it's a shame it isn't balanced. Best of luck with the Jam.

Money Thief by Zachary Lewis 2010-08-22T22:26:00

I really loved pretty much everything about the game, but I'm just not sure where the theme ties in. In the final version, you aren't really using the enemies against each other at all, you just don a random disguise.
My only other complaint was that some of the jumps in the game were a little too hard to pull off when you're being chased.
The characters were really cute though. I love how their legs move.

BOMBCRASH by Xander Davis 2010-08-22T23:16:00

I found the enemy's collision boxes to be a little on the huge side. That made it a little hard to crash them into each other. Cool game, though.

HypnoFruit (TD) by Alan Lynn 2010-08-23T16:09:00

Good idea, it's just too bad there's only the two levels. On the second level, I got so many of the cockroaches that by the time I had enough fruit to deploy the first boss, he had been pushed off the list :(
Anyway, you should consider expanding this after the compo. It was fun!

Magno-Warrior by TheLastBanana 2010-08-23T15:09:00

The ship has a little arrow on it that points toward where the mouse is. Aiming is definitely an issue when you've got a ship attached to your side, though, and the arrow is pretty hard to distinguish. Glad you enjoyed it anyway!

Magno-Warrior by TheLastBanana 2010-08-24T15:33:00

Glad to hear everybody liked the music - I don't have all that much experience in music, so the fact that I could create something listenable is great. Maybe I'll polish this up a bit after LD and fix some of the control issues.

Magno-Warrior by TheLastBanana 2010-08-31T16:35:00

After Ludum Dare ends, I might take a shot at making this into a Flash game. I'll definitely be having the guns automatically arrange, and I'll probably include a few different control schemes so people can choose what they're more comfortable with. Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Fib by Sophie Houlden 2010-08-23T02:02:00

Really cool. Hope you develop it further.

Collateral by Jonathan Whiting 2010-08-22T23:59:00

Nice little game. I'm going to play through and try pacifism this time.

Dead End inc. by Basic 2010-08-22T21:50:00

The difficulty curve felt a little abrupt. One moment I was knocking single zombies off the building, when suddenly there was an entire swarm. Other than that, it was a neat little game (although I was a little sad that I couldn't take out zombies that were still walking around with a properly-timed manager).

Survive 60 by ExciteMike 2010-08-23T16:15:00

I enjoyed playing this one. The concept wasn't anything too new, but it was executed nicely. I liked the background, but yeah, it didn't really fit. All in all if was fun, though.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Le Ver by GamerTaters 2014-04-29T23:11:00

Man, that worm totally depressed me. Fantastic mood.

The Mask of Us by KirbiKaka 2014-04-29T08:14:00

The movement speed seemed a little high, and for me, the camera scrolled really, really slowly, so I had to wait about 45 seconds before the square-head house came into view.

I liked it, though! Nice spin on the theme.

Dig Hard by petey123567 2014-04-29T07:52:00

Polished and lots of fun. Great work.

Deep Collective by olkeencole 2014-04-29T02:48:00

I don't have someone else to play this with at the moment, so I won't rate it. It doesn't look much like the screenshot -- did you maybe upload the wrong version?

Oh My Oilrig! by manabreak 2014-04-29T07:57:00

I liked it! For some reason, though, when I clicked the build icon, the workers often wouldn't do anything. In one case, the clock popped up to indicate he was working, but the turret never appeared.

Ludumsub by travislucia 2014-04-29T23:26:00

I like the atmosphere (especially when the lights go out). Nice work!

Die Backpfeife aus dem Nichts by primaerfunktion 2014-04-29T23:36:00

Hah, this is wacky. I like it.

Water Hazard by Hemuuuli 2014-04-29T08:37:00

Great atmosphere and PS1 graphics. Really well-done.

Alien Depths by Skiddings 2014-04-29T02:59:00

The physics and lighting were cool. Not much to do, unfortunately, but a neat tech demo.

Tenlki's Music player by Tenlki 2014-04-29T06:03:00

You included the HTML page but not the game itself -- we can't access the SWF!

Magma by DMinsky 2014-04-29T22:56:00

Nicely polished and an interesting concept. I wish there was a restart button -- if you mess up once while trying to get "Kill 'Em All," you have to give up and try again.

Below Earth by klianc09 2014-04-29T06:32:00

You have to download Java 8 to run the game:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html

The game was fun, and I thought the graphics and particle effects were nice. I made it to level 19.

I had a few gripes, though:
- The player movement felt really sluggish, especially combined with the bomb throwing mechanic -- I felt like there was barely enough room to maneuver, much less to get the run-up required to lob a bomb at enemies.
- I felt like the spitting mole things should only take one hit to kill. They're hard enough to dodge as it is.
- When you restart the level, you start with the amount of health you had when you got to that level. That kind of sucks when you only have 1 health left and the level is nearly impossible to beat without taking damage.

Overall, I liked it! Good work. :)

Drill A Drill by Nyyman 2014-04-29T08:03:00

I dig the vocal sound effects. I didn't seem to be able to upgrade my defense, and somehow on my second run I ended up with negative science. Cool game, though.

Hieranarchy by joshbradbury52 2014-04-29T06:41:00

There's a lot of lag when you attack enemies. I'm also not entirely sure how attacking works. Half the time, clicking them doesn't seem to do anything, and the other half it does damage and makes them bleed.

Underground Minions by Shinxs 2014-04-29T06:51:00

The idea is kind of an interesting twist on Lemmings. Unfortunately there was only one level you could fully complete, and the second one was a lot of trial and error trying to figure out what all the actions did. Could be fun if you developed it a little further.

Body Defence by stenol 2014-04-30T00:33:00

Nice music, and a decent tower defense game. When the green enemies (they look kind of like frog heads?) came, my turrets kept missing them. Not sure if that was intentional.

Snatching Invaluables Beneath the Surface by mcburrobit 2014-04-29T07:34:00

The movement felt nice and chunky. It was a little slow considering the size of the levels, though.

I only got to level 2, but it didn't seem like there was much challenge. I also wasn't sure what the point of digging was -- you could basically walk anywhere underground.

Visually, though, the game was really nice. Lots of nice polish like the way the player moves in steps and the lighting effects.

Depths Beneath by Stals 2014-04-29T07:27:00

I enjoyed it a lot! I got all the upgrades. :)

The sound for collecting coins was really nice, especially when you got a whole bunch in a row. The claws were also fun to play with.

My only complaint is that it felt like how well I was doing had more to do with random chance than with skill -- if the game happened to spawn a lot of fish near each other (especially the sharks) or not enough gas, there was no hope of getting past that point.

Still, it was well-done. Good job!

An Osterreich tale, or something about ostriches by Marcellus 2014-04-30T00:18:00

Haha, great take on the theme. I found it a little too disorienting for me to play, but I love the idea.

Questionable Submarine by TheLastBanana 2014-04-29T01:25:00

I've updated the source and executable to fix a crash bug if you managed to get beyond 3000m depth.

Deepwater Mining by Natura-Time 2014-04-29T07:45:00

Clicking to break the blocks felt a little tedious. Two or three clicks at most would have been enough, I think.

Debt Diver by aaronj 2014-04-29T22:32:00

Great job of polish. I felt like there wasn't a lot of progression from one night to the next (I stopped at night 11), but the mechanic was fun. I wanted to explore deeper, but it seemed almost impossible to get any further than where it starts getting dark since I would inevitably have enough money by that point.

Daisy's dog is dead by alvarop 2014-04-30T00:07:00

Cute graphics and interesting mechanics.

I found the post-it notes a little awkward -- they would always move slightly after being placed, and their collision boxes seemed unclear to me. I also wish I could have seen what they were before clicking on them.

Search Beneath the Surface by halfmage 2014-04-29T22:40:00

Cute graphics and nice controls.

The Goblin Inside by MetanoKid 2014-04-30T00:23:00

Funny concept and interpretation of the theme, and nice music.

Theres's a Twist by Lucio 2014-04-29T23:54:00

Interesting mechanic! Like a few others mentioned, the movement felt very rigid and "sticky," and the difficulty curve was a bit high (though I made it to level 10 or so). Overall, though, good job!

Scavenger by longshorts 2014-04-30T00:12:00

Congrats on your first Ludum Dare!

I found the controls were a little sticky, and I kept getting stuck inside of walls while jumping. Some of the enemies seemed to be placed in ways that getting past them was more luck than skill.

Still, interesting mechanic with hunger, and good job getting a full set of audio in (including SFX and music)!

Beneath The Surface by adamwoolridge 2014-04-29T22:46:00

Cool graphics and sound, and a great spin on the theme. Nice work!

the Attack - Beneath the Surface by Franklin's Ghost 2014-04-29T23:42:00

Congrats on your first Ludum Dare! :) Very simple, but it seemed like you were going for minimalism. Some more play mechanics would have been nice.

Robot invasion by Tosic 2014-04-29T08:57:00

I tried left-clicking, but nothing seemed to be happening!

Trufflehunt by ruerob 2014-04-29T22:20:00

Cute! I would have liked a little more strategy, but it was fun to play nonetheless.

Coin Diver by VDZ 2014-04-30T00:00:00

Great use of music and an interesting control scheme. I didn't love how you stick to walls, but it was otherwise fun to play.

Nereids' Sea by Tifu 2014-04-29T23:19:00

Really creepy; great work on atmosphere. I found the gameplay got a little stale because of how long it took to get to the treasure. I never did get to the end, because a Nereid caught me just before I found the treasure and I didn't feel like doing it all again.

RMBR by Pitoum 2014-04-29T08:45:00

Interesting way of telling a story. I tried it on my Nexus 5, but the place where I tapped on-screen didn't line up with where the game thought I was tapping -- seemed like a resolution issue of some kind.

Into the Abyss by kyyrma 2014-04-29T09:03:00

Nice music. I thought the underwater atmosphere complete with weird, glowy creatures was well-done.
