LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

PIXELSPACE by davecheesefish 2010-09-05T08:48:00

Hi everyone - thanks for the comments!

A few responses:
@TheLastBanana - The enemies accelerate towards you at all times, but I admit the attraction is a bit weak in the LD18 version

@ExciteMike - Enemies do spawn more frequently as time goes on, but I think I made the increase too slow to be noticable

@Jerm - Oops, sorry about the mistake! I've added it to the release notes. There are 3 different types of enemies, but I should have made them more distinguishable: Regular enemies (bright green) are just bog-standard drones; strong enemies (dark green) take 2 hits to kill; fast enemies (with dark green lines) are more strongly attracted to you.

@eli - I used to have a 500 point bonus for getting two enemies to collide, but with just 2 hours to go it was aparrent that random collisions were far more common than intentional ones. It seemed a waste just to reward something that happened at random, so I removed it.

An improved version made for the Experimental Gameplay Project which (I hope) fixes all these problems is available at http://www.dcfgames.com/games/pixelspace

I agree with pretty much everyone else here - the sound was brilliant!

I couldn't really get the dragging enemies mechanic to work, but maybe that's just me. ;) I did find a good way to stay alive is simply to run around the edge of the mountain in circles - the chompers will either stay far enough behind you to not be a problem, or they'll fall off the mountain!

Overall entertaining, but could use some polish

Fight Chickens With Chickens by Sos 2010-09-05T08:36:00

Great game! Love the music and concept. The sticking to the ceiling mechanic worked well, but I can't help thinking "How does a chicken stick to the ceiling?"

If I were to change anything, it'd be the controls. Most platform games I've seen have used the space bar for jumping, so I kept throwing chickens when I meant to jump (usually resulting in them beating me to death).

I really like the visual style - it works well with the simple gameplay you've got going here. Though this version was pretty easy and held little variety, I had quite a lot of fun with it and would definately like to see more.

It was fun for a few minutes, but could be improved with more variety of enemies and more levels. I'd also advise making the background "platforms" more different from the solid foreground ones - I got a bit of a suprise when I fell through what I thought was the floor at one point.

Overall a solid game with good graphics and having multiple spells was a nice addition. Couldn't really see the theme incorporated anywhere with any great strength though.

Took me a couple of tries before I worked out why the game ended (you can only let 60 aliens through without shooting them) and I didn't really get why I was sucking them up, nor what the powers actually did.

It has potential, given a bit more explanation. Congrats on your first LD!

Robots <3 Monster by timgarbos 2010-09-05T09:10:00

The simplicity works to it's advantage.

My only gripes are that the score counter doesn't disappear when you go back to the title screen and, compared to the clean lines of the background and explosions, the characters look very jaggy.

Overall very enjoyable :)

Nicely executed, though there were a few issues with gameplay.
- The second level with the large spike pit was fairly cumbersome with all the repetition
- In the third level in the tunnel I got stuck between the two dudes with no way out (the tunnel wasn't high enough to jump over to let one get at the other). Eventually I had to stand on one's head while he beat the daylights out of the other.

Overall it was nicely presented and uses a unique game mechanic I've not seen before.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Cavernsweeper by davecheesefish 2014-05-20T12:53:00

Hi all! Thanks for the great comments.

It's true, I'd be the first to admit the game's not perfect. I have a list about as long as my arm of things that need fixing but I just ran out of time in the compo. ;)

I'm going to come back to it when I've got some spare time, so if you're interested in updates follow me on Twitter (@davecheesefish) or check my website (davecheesefish.com) for new versions and all my other games! </shameless plug>
