OMG THAT WAS SO FUN, i got really good at aiming, and it was so satisfying. great work love the art

strega 2020-04-21 05:42

Really cute art and animations. The game play was really tight and responsive. The music was great as always and so many tracks! Only issue was when you drag too far down and exit the game window the slingshot doesn't release unless you re-click inside the window.

onnofal 2020-04-21 10:14

Honestly I went here already with expectation of excellence and was pleased again. You both know very well what you are doing and I am always amazed how you are able to craft it into perfection in limited jam time.

effarek 2020-04-21 12:21

Amazing game, really fun and cute. I feel like I could play it for hours

smbe19 2020-04-21 13:24

Awesome game! Great art and great music as always! I am looking forward to your entry every time.

adamwatters 2020-04-21 13:39

One of the best LD46 entries I've seen so far. The graphics, sound, and gameplay were all perfect.

purrseus 2020-04-21 13:56

As always, I'm absolutely stunned by everything you two managed to create in just 3 days. The gameplay is really addicting, since the controls are super tight(I did not have a problem with mouse detection outside of the game window by the way) and the assets are so charming. It's a heartwarming cutesy gem that just begs for the (thankfully upcoming!) mobile port.

jusw85 2020-04-21 17:22

The aesthetic was amazing! The art and music fit the mood perfectly, and I loved the voiced sound effects. I beat all 4 levels. Mechanics wise was okay, after four levels the gameplay got a little stale for me. And the inability to drag outside the window bit was annoying, even though I fully understand it's out of your control. Regardless, I loved it overall!

ddrkirbyisq 2020-04-21 19:09

@strega @jusw85: Thanks for the issue report! The mouse pointer thing is an HTML5-specific issue that didn't get caught during testing. I've added automatic mouse capturing so the cursor now disappears during gameplay (press esc to show again), so that shouldn't be a problem anymore. Hooray!

derek-volker 2020-04-21 20:19

Ok, this is just amazing. Specially the sounds. Sneaky-sneaky, tip-toe-tip-toe. It really gets in the head.

Loved the game. Excellent work!

shanzhai 2020-04-21 21:09

So sweet it gave me diabetes. Loved every second of it!

noahro 2020-04-21 23:35

Love it! Gets really tough! Very fun and satisfying when you start slinging meowmies at the burglars at high speeds!

_Tip-toe-tip-toe_

peachtreeoath 2020-04-22 05:26

Neat concept and something that would certainly fit in the mobile-space, controlwise. I attacks felt pretty satisfying because of a combination of the cat animations, as well as the general whack a mole feel of the game. I thought the 1st level was actually the hardest level because of limited ammo. I liked that there was kind of a risk reward decision, where you want to take a shot as early as possible to start the ammo-regen process, but you are afraid you might miss because they're almost about to duck behind the bush. There were some tense moments at first but I eventually got the hang of it. The later levels were easy for me since I didn't need to worry about ammo.

What was your gameplan for coming up with music for this one? You had some jazzy tunes early, and the last theme seems like something that would belong in Donkey Kong Country. I thought the soundtrack was great, it was the primary reason I played all the different levels lol. Overall the concept is really engaging. There's a lot of charm to the idea of cats trying to protect a bird. I feel like there's a Looney Tunes with this concept but can't quite remember it..

brylamare 2020-04-22 06:11

This game was so cute, I loved your art style. I could totally see this being a very fun mobile game

ddrkirbyisq 2020-04-22 06:28

@peachtreeoath: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the soundtrack. Each of the main level themes was written in roughly 1.5 hours -- I'm very practiced in taking a theme and running with it after doing over 300 rounds of [One Hour Compo](http://compo.thasauce.net/compos/view/OHC) -- in fact it's a tradition of mine to try and jam out an entire soundtrack of sketches in OHC the week of Ludum Dare. See [here](https://y2u.be/qKfYYjctcyU) as well as the [making of](https://y2u.be/jSdNThvZqoE).

For this particular soundtrack the main feel I was going for was "sneaky", but in a cartoonish and light-hearted sense. I referenced various stock music such as [this compilation](https://y2u.be/I2m1h0ALpY4) as well as the Plants vs. Zombies soundtrack. You can see this come out in the tracks in different ways:

- Level 1 uses lots of pizzicato / mallets (tiptoeing!) and a slower tempo - Level 2 is more of a "secret agent" / spy vibe, with a sax, and wah-wah effect on the guitar - Level 3 uses more pizzicato, but with a higher tempo this time. The piano soloing and jazzy chords seemed to fit well with this tempo and style. I ended up going into a 12-bar blues progression - Level 4 is more of a "chillout" style vibe to contrast with the previous level's fast pace. I wanted to echo the "winter" vibe

I wanted the progression of the songs to mirror the progression of the gameplay, so the tempo increases throughout the first 3 songs, until "wrapping around" for level 4 which is slower.

Past that a lot of the decisions were entirely spontaneous as part of the creative process.

jack-kaloger 2020-04-22 06:29

Very satisfying to play - the atmosphere is absolutely made by those cute graphics and the sound FX  Glad to see you're going to do a mobile port

peachtreeoath 2020-04-22 06:42

ohhhh yea that sneaky/funky soundtrack you see in heist movies and such. I totally get it now. Thanks for the breakdown of inspo, I love hearing about that stuff!

ahistyap 2020-04-22 08:40

Adorable game! Graphics and audio are spot on. 5 stars on Overall!

alobker 2020-04-22 09:21

Very well done. I really like the polish on this game. There was even a tutorial and different music in every level.

solah 2020-04-22 11:28

Wow, what an amazingly polished game! The graphics, music and gamefeel are purrfect!

I would have love to have a bit more features, like different burglars or layouts for the level.

Anyway, great work!

bemmu 2020-04-22 15:38

I love the sounds and music (no wonder since it's by DDRKirby!). Something about the combination of the relaxing atmosphere and "sneaky sneaky" sound effects makes this funny too. It's also great how cute and approachable this is as well, I think I'm going to let my 4yo give a try too to see if he likes it :)

I gave this the highest points out of all games I've rated so far.

aeveis 2020-04-23 06:08

Really nice! Flinging the cats felt cool and the animations were great. There was something about the cursor being gone that made me very anxious, though I didn't need it to help me aim. The different music tracks for each level were very nice.

ddrkirbyisq 2020-04-23 16:30

@aeveis: Thanks for playing! Yeah, unfortunately I had to hide the cursor, otherwise I had users trying to drag the mouse down outside the game window which is an even worse experience because none of the inputs outside the game area do anything. =/ Not sure if there's any real better way to handle it. On the plus side, the upcoming mobile port won't really have this issue at all...

Actually, maybe I could implement a software cursor, that might help...

ddrkirbyisq 2020-04-23 18:23

@aeveis: I've implemented a software mouse cursor that is locked inside of the game window, and gets switched on once gameplay starts (your default mouse pointer gets disabled). This should hopefully make things feel a little less weird. Thanks again for the feedback!

aeveis 2020-04-24 01:57

@ddrkirbyisq Oh yeah, that's feeling better! Thanks!

megamasterx 2020-04-24 16:13

This is a terrific entry! The arcadey feel of the game really lends itself nicely to your combination of art and sound. This was immensely enjoyable on a touch device, I'd love to see this continue to be worked on and refined!

erkberg 2020-04-24 19:56

Fantastic game! It looks great, sounds even better (as is to be expected of a ddrkirby entry ^^) and it's also just a whole lot of fun to play. The amount of polish is quite insane! :D The final level was just frantic, but still doable! The reload mechanic got almost irrelevant at that point, but it didn't matter at all. What can I say, I enjoyed this a lot and I think it might be even better with touch controls on mobile.

teammonumental 2020-04-25 02:16

Your ludum dare submissions are always the ones I look forward to the most! The Music Box is one of my all-time favorites. The first time one of the burglars picked up chickie I went into a complete panic lol. I loved the sound effects and level 4 was a great challenge. (It's an even greater one with 16,000 dpi : ) As always, a fantastic game.

aurel300 2020-04-25 09:08

Fun! Lovely combination of pixel art and hand-drawn graphics, reminded me a bit of some older Nintendo titles, particularly on the DS or GBA. Very cute sound effects too!

shadoninja 2020-04-25 13:43

Another good one. Great job :)

hwaet 2020-04-26 13:42

I think this one might be my favorite submission. It feels polished, and I love the concept. The music is especially nice! It's giving me such strong Rangarok vibes that I think I'm going to hop back and replay one of my old favorites. Thank you for sharing this lovely game!

jesterseraph 2020-04-26 20:43

Really cute game! Definitely one of the better games of the jam, overall. Lowest ratings were innovation & theme, because while the game is really cute, shooting animals with a slingshot isn't a new idea, and while you were keeping something alive, the objective felt more like shooting the burglars than keeping something alive. Seems like a majority of us really went for "gameplay that happens to be linked to something living or dying," either in protecting something or in maintaining some energy bar.

Otherwise: always appreciate sound controls. The music & effects came in way too loud to begin with.

lesinvisible 2020-04-26 22:42

Nice visuals but gameplay mechanics look a little bit too limited in my opinion.

terry 2020-04-28 01:01

This is fantastic - seriously impressed in particular by the full, excellent soundtrack as well given the time constraints. And the game is so cute and charming! One of my highlights from this Ludum Dare so far

codexus 2020-04-28 07:14

Super good game! Adorable graphics, very nice soundtrack and a fun concept!

savvu 2020-04-28 07:47

Lovely graphics and it was sich a fun throwing a cat haha! The theme fits very nice and I managed to keep me chicken alive very well. It is already a well polished and complete game so in the future you could just add more levels with backround variations. This would be awesome as a mobile version of course with mechanics like angry birds! Congratulations!

2020-04-28 07:55

WOW! IT IS COOL!

ilikescifi 2020-04-28 08:07

Great job! I love / hate cats - so this is a perfect game for me ^^ I´m not sure about the theme... but the game itself is just lovely. And the way the cats are kicking the thieves asses is just hilarious. I put a cat in my game as well hahah ^^

drachmor 2020-04-28 08:11

Alright this is insane. Ridiculously polished, cute, and mechanically satisfying. Absolutely one of the most solid submissions of this jam. The fact that you crafted this much character in 72 hours amazes me! (The lil' chicken hops were VERY, very important). I'm interested in what you come up with for a full release.

In the way of constructive criticism, I would say that the difficulty scaling may be challenging to balance in a full release. The hardest level for me was definitely when the number of burglars increased WITHOUT the number of cats increasing (I think level 3). By the last level, the scarcity of your a"mew"nition was no longer a factor, and I found it easier to defeat the horde of enemies than in earlier levels where I had to be more considerate of my time and aim. (That being said, I'm glad the last level was created the way that it was, as it really stretches this concept to its fullest for a game jam). It does feel like adding more burglars, or decreasing your amewnition, are currently the only ways of incrementing difficulty, which would probably not be the most expandable in its own.

But this game is clearly in good hands!

docgeraud 2020-04-28 08:27

This might be the cutest entry I've ever seen coming from the Ludum Dare. And this is insanely polished. I had a lot of fun, great job!

peterfiftyfour 2020-04-28 08:35

NOoooo the lil chicken it's too cute i cant take it. This is exceptionally polished, the music is really good - (nice mixing whoever that was). The gameplay loop is fun but I think it could do with some more variation and perhaps a mode with 100x more cute chickens running around? Anyway thanks! Solid entry

notan-lemon 2020-04-28 08:42

This is amazing! The graphics is really cute. Especially I love the chick hopping animation. The gameplay is simple yet pleasing. Great job!

Also, why are the burglars in level 4 so evil? They are GUILTY! As a bird I will keep blaming them.

lorwon 2020-04-28 10:04

Wow, nothing to say good job your game is amazing !

zyow 2020-04-28 10:10

So cute and so funny! I love it! Well done!

elendow 2020-04-28 10:38

Ok, awesome graphics, awesome audio, fun and simple gameplay... Not much to say, awesome entry overall, loved every bit of it.

anybooks 2020-04-28 10:40

All Signs point to FUNNNN

duke 2020-04-28 10:42

Wow, great entry! From beginning to finish a very polished expoerience. Awesome and cute art, a lot of sound effects and even different musical tracks for the levels. There's really not much to criticize here. The core game play was rather simple but worked very well. And it was very satisfying to shoot the burglars with cats. I also didn't encounter any bugs on my playthrough. Kudos! What an entry!

papaver 2020-04-28 11:23

Awesome game! :two_hearts:

I love the art style (although I only later realised it was different in every level, apparently the four seasons!). I also really enjoyed all the different musics and the funny voice acting when the burglars were tiptoeing closer.

In the beginning I was a bit surprised that the meowmies would defend the birdie, but I love the slingshot mechanics which seem to go quite well with the meowmies!

Very well polished game, congrats!

simonemueller 2020-04-28 12:41

really enjoyed playing, the sound effects were so well made :D

tobiasw 2020-04-28 14:53

I knew I'd love the game once I saw the GIF and read the name DDRKirbyISQ.

And it didn't let me down. I love everything about this game. Let me recount the ways I love it: - I love its theme. - I almost have to stop playing every time I throw a cat at a burglar because the animation is so heart-wrenchingly cute and fierce at the same time. - The sfx/voices. Tiptoe, tiptoe ~ - The mechanics are superb. Moving, hiding, looking up - it's both engaging and sort of predictable. - I know that having the cats return is just a fancy cooldown, but it makes *sense* and is much more immersive than a UI element could be. - I love the little chick. Especially in the "you win" screen, for obvious reasons ;) - I love that you made four different seasons, and how much that adds to the mood.

Needless to say, this feels like a finished product and not like a jam game. And it's pure sugar. Fantastic job, you two!

mikesalyh 2020-04-28 23:29

Very cute and polished! I love the theme, seasons, and cat animations.

In some ways, the earlier levels were harder than the later levels, because there was so much downtime waiting for the cat to 'reload'. The only change I would recommend is reducing the time between when the cat mauls the burglar and returns to your side.

matootsy 2020-04-29 04:39

Congratulation you two! Very nice art style, and pretty good musics. The game play is very simple, but very smooth and easy to play. I like the mood and the humor. For a game jam entry, it's perfectly polished.

zuhairghias 2020-04-29 07:49

:hearts: Love the art style and music as usual. Only complaint would be that the game felt a bit repeptitive by the 3rd and fourth level. A few added mechanics would be nice. Like different enemies or cats with different uses. An armor piercing cat. Or maybe an explosive cat. But overall loved the interpretation of the theme. Great job.

dane-tesla 2020-04-29 13:45

5/5, voices of thieves sneaking got me

dvdfu 2020-04-30 18:19

Fantastic entry!! The controls feel awesome, the graphics and presentation are all really charming and almost made me want to lose to see what'd happen! The mechanic is simple but extremely effective, and scales nicely with more cat ammo. Love the voices too :)

hjalte 2020-04-30 21:32

That was a ton o' fun! I loved the cutie graphics, the audio fit super well with everything and the theme was spot on :). The controls felt a little weird, maybe the inversion wasn't necessary? Either way the feedback felt good and it was super cool to have to conserve cats and such. Really nice entry, and definitely got harder than I thought it would.. Great job :).

lereveur 2020-05-01 20:01

Cute, poetic, fun, and nice to see and ear. As always, I'm not deceived by you entry, well done!

adhesion 2020-05-02 21:33

That was awesome! Great graphics and music, and I especially love the sound design and voice acting. The little details really add up to a great experience. Really solid concept & nice difficulty progression throughout the levels. The first level felt a bit difficult at first as I was getting used to the inverted mouse controls, but by level 2 I got the hang of it - plus the jump to having 2 cats was huge and made the game way more fun. The only slight issue I had is that I kept having to move my hand upwards on my mousepad since almost all of the vertical mouse movement is down - not sure how to potentially mitigate that, but it's only a minor annoyance I suppose. Really cool experience overall. Great work! :D

dummydojo 2020-05-03 19:36

Super pleasant experience, loved every part of it. Not much to critique to be honest. Great jam game! I came across your website. Definitely gonna take a deeper look into your stuff later.

rongo-matane 2020-05-04 16:19

Such a round and complete entry! The animations are hilarious, the setting is fun and the attention to detail is great (telegraphing targets, colored aiming circle, screen transitions). I really appreciate the effort to make each level distinct with own music and colors. It was slightly on the easy side for me, so the levels felt a bit long in playtime. Overall great entry, very very few games have this level of "finished" :D

garys 2020-05-05 09:02

I really like this. Nicely polished, the controls feel great and the graphics are brilliant... The sound effects were the icing on the cake though, the different noises the enemies make as they move around were (oh god, I'm gonna do it... I'm sorry...) 'Puurrrfect'. ***hangs head in shame***

gameovermexico 2020-05-08 00:27

Good Job!!

aaron-taube 2020-05-08 01:56

Those animations were delightful! The controls seemed awkward at first, but once you get accustomed to it, they were super smooth.

lcstark 2020-05-08 07:38

A cute and fun little game! The art style and the audio side are both extremely well done, it was a real joy to play it.

As for the gameplay, it works really well. I loved the cat animations, they reminded me a little bit of the dog in Duck Hunt. One thing I would change about the gameplay is to invert the direction you have to drag to shoot - while dragging down seems more "realistic", I feel like it makes the control really difficult. Dragging up would allow for much more precise controls, which is really needed when you have only one shot every few seconds.

All in all, I loved it. It's a really well done entry. Great work! ;)

dk5000p 2020-05-08 07:56

This was hilarious. I had some trouble aiming and shooting but the few times I did stop the burglars it was satisfying. Overall great job.

jmad 2020-05-08 14:25

Such a great game. It works super well. Concept is hilarious, graphics are adorable, impressive soundtrack makes for a great mood, sounds are a mix of cute and funny. Difficulty was just right. Loved it!!

invader 2020-05-08 16:52

Nice game. Visuals and sound are awesome.

Controls feel a little bit awkward... At least on touchpad. Is aiming really has to be 2-dimentional? You can experiment with allowing just 1 axis for it. That would simplify controls and make experience more dynamic and arcade-like.

zubspace 2020-05-08 21:10

Wow, everything about this game is cute! The music is great, the art-style is wonderful, the gameplay feels fresh and the controls and aiming work really nice. It was really fun throwing around all those cats. Great job!

blumerang 2020-05-10 03:39

So cute! Loved the artstyle, the menu animation and all the little details like the snippet before the game starts.

kuro 2020-05-11 07:36

Amazing as always .)

pee-thief 2020-05-11 23:09

woahhhhhhh this is very good.

madebychaz 2020-05-12 17:11

My first impression was that the sound was fitting and everything felt nice and smooth. I was thrown a bit with the inverse aiming, it didn't quite feel immediately intuitive and the stage border limit for the mouse on the jam version was a slight annoyance especially when it came to quitting the game, but a minor quality-of-life gripe nonetheless.

I thought the hand painted style was cute, and there's a decent level of polish for a jam game. It did feel a little repetitive for my tastes; I didn't have any clear indication of what a level consisted of so I didn't know the end goal (if it *was* there it wasn't clear to me) and it felt a bit aimless (pun not intended!) as I continued to play.

Overall I think this would probably work best as a casual mobile game and would benefit from a bit more variety and progression feedback, but it is of course a very nice overall package. Thanks for submitting and congratulations on your entry!

acronaut 2020-05-12 19:19

Really Cute, (especially game-over screen, lol) :smile_cat: great execution of the organic-painterly graphics. Good tension of the enemy waves. Tried this html5 game between Desktop-pc and mobile chrome browser on android tablet (Samsung galaxy) One of the great perks for HTML5 in this case is at least I could run this on a mobile browser; This game makes so much sense on a mobile-browser (feels so right!) with regards to the slingshot-mechanic. The Mouse approach of the sling-shot felt like some inverse-control at first (not that it was an issue; still doable, it felt like there's sensitivity in relation to the recoil-intensity between mouse-drag magnitude in comparison to touch-drag magnitude); Like the animations. note: No issues in control through desktop-pc (I just mention the immediate 'feel' of the slingshot mechanic is quite different between desktop and mobile; both work well!) Suggestion: if two Meowmies land in same spot then if its possible they could recoil or bounce like billards-ball mechanic? I was thinking if one Meowmie could tackle two burglers in one Meowmie? still no complaints as it is, it seems to have a good balance IMO. nice! :dizzy:
