LD39 — Running out of Power

Power Levels by alexander0153 2017-08-01T07:36:48Z

A fun top-down shooter! Bumping off of planets is really cute and the whole aesthetic is very clean. One small issue I had is with enemy spawns, I would have like ten of them spawn in at once and kill me immediately. Still, I had a lot of fun!

RUN! Before the power runs out! by zenmumbler 2017-08-08T01:08:31Z

As a demo for your engine it works really well! I wish that you had put some model in for the key instead of having it be a green room. Still, it's simple but effective, and really fun.

SparkLit by drinkycode 2017-08-08T06:36:55Z

I really love how the game looks. It sounds nice too, the sfx are understated but mesh well. I wish I could do something about the enemies - having to run away and hide doesn't make for engaging gameplay in this case.

Poke Mongo by ghust1995 2017-08-01T03:28:34Z

Not really any constructive criticism to give, but it is really funny. I had more fun than I do with real Pokemon Go.

Spincharge by DMajor 2017-08-08T06:19:15Z

I had a pretty easy time cheating the AI - just waited by the edge and then popped around them when they came. Still, I like the idea, and I had fun!

HoverBots by genderTruckery 2017-08-01T03:06:45Z

The fun of this game comes from how hard to control it is, kind of like an Octodad. My drone was flying all over the place and crashing into walls and I loved it. One annoying bit was the tractor beam - it didn't want to pick up the thing I wanted it to sometimes.

Yet Another Exhausted Day by Gao Ming 2017-08-02T03:05:31Z

I'm glad someone finally made a game about my life. A nice controls-based puzzle game, funny concept. I found the game's constant unfocusing and then snapping back to focus distracting, though.

LD39:Running out of energy by johnnwfs 2017-08-05T17:43:31Z

I liked the weird movement system, once you figured it out it let you think critically about which powerups you could go for and which you should give up on to put yourself in a better situation. I wish you used more power moving than standing still, to put more emphasis on critical thinking.

Kit Rocket by Ethan Kennerly 2017-08-05T18:00:20Z

I had a weirdly good time playing this game. I especially enjoyed (in a kind of masochistic way) how some of the upgrades would make my ship horribly off balance and send me spinning out of control and crashing. I wish that using some of the higher level fuels didn't make me stay up in the air for a really long time.

Update: I accidentally flew my rocket negative 28 thousand meters. I'm in terrible debt now. This game rocks.

ZapDune by diptoman 2017-08-02T05:13:29Z

The movement mechanics are really fun, zipping around the level is a blast. It looks great. The music was over the top for my taste. I wish there were more to do with the movement mechanics - I never felt like I had to do any cool or fast maneuvers to get where I needed to be. Using the grapple to traverse a level with pits and enemies would I think be more fun.

House of the Rising Sun by shide 2017-08-05T18:31:56Z

I really enjoy the graphical style, but I wish that I didn't have so many options dumped on me at once - maybe unlock buildings over time, with more science?

Intrepid by Arkthalohs 2017-08-01T05:52:07Z

I like the strategy mechanics, and the rolling dice made it feel like a tabletop game which I really liked. It ran slow for my taste, I had trouble getting the ship moving around a lot of the time.

PowerCubeStationBox™ by NueboMundo 2017-08-05T17:48:49Z

Once of my favorite parts was being able to play a 2d game on a wildly titled screen. It felt nostalgic to a degree that I didn't expect it to. I just wish I could keep the power on for longer so that I felt like I was doing something more than constantly recharging the box.

The Berserker by PlexusDuMenton 2017-08-01T03:15:15Z

I couldn't play it with the Windows download, it says UnityPlayer.dll wasn't found.

Mower Storms by dracominer 2017-08-08T00:45:34Z

I think the problem with clicking is that it registers your mouse as being above where it actually is? So you have to click below things to actually click on them, which makes the 'back to main menu' button impossible to click. Outside of that, though, really good presentation on the game, the UI was really helpful. The opening, too, helps to give the game a coherent theming art-wise.

CryOS by James Dunlap 2017-08-01T00:40:49Z

The aesthetic of the game was really good! I wish I could have learned more of the mechanics, it looked like it was pretty deep. I never got to that point though, I always died right after finishing the five solar panels. A bit more time at the start to get used to the game would be nice. I think tooltips would help a lot too, being able to hover over tiles and see what they are, for example, would be a big help.

Mad Trax by boats 2017-08-01T06:04:06Z

Really great aesthetic, the retrowave graphics with the whole train/vagabond thing with the music find a weird sort of balance, even if they don't really mesh. It's interesting, though, which is what matters. I wish I could be a little more active while playing it, but the strategy of it is really interesting. It's deeper than it appears on the surface, though it seems really simple.

Constellation Exploration by matfernandestt 2017-08-08T06:26:44Z

An interesting bug I found - at one point I went straight from level 1 to level 3. Which was nice for me because I never managed to beat level two the right way. I like the graphical style and the music was nice, but it did cut out for me.

MoleMine: Dig 'til you drop by Skyward 2017-08-05T19:05:10Z

Exploring the cave was fun, there was a weird lag after digging that made things take longer than I would've liked.

Baguette Hour by Xenation 2017-08-02T03:48:02Z

The mechanic where as your meter decreases you move faster, but get weaker, is actually really interesting, and I'd love to see that expanded on. The game is fun and plays well, though it's hard to tell if your attacks are landing with no sound and no visual indicator.

Advanced Infiltration Management System by crass_sandwich 2017-08-05T18:56:30Z

The slowdown is really cool and it feels great to shoot a ton of bullets in slow motion, but when you're at 2% and the game is taking five minutes to end, it's easier to quit out than to lose. Also, a small bug where at slow speeds firing two bullets close in time to each other causes them both to disappear.

Wormrun by apxllon 2017-08-01T06:52:14Z

A fun, cute little game. Banging music, and a good difficulty too. Even though it can be beaten really quickly, I enjoyed it a lot.

Power Tower by AncientEntity 2017-08-01T04:53:15Z

The combination of really floating jumping with what's essentially a ground pound (performed by pressing down) makes a simple climbing game actually feel pretty fun. A minor annoyance: sometimes you can go through the sides of platforms and sometimes you can't, which feels weird.

Fall of Raphael by fangzhangmnm 2017-08-01T06:59:14Z

This game has an amazing aesthetic and I love looking at it. The graphics were a little glitchy in places, but they more than make up for it. The music is good, there's a nice shift into some bumping tracks. The movement speed is a little fast to accelerate, I don't feel like I have great control of my character. It's a fun puzzle platformer, and it let me murder an innocent in like the first screen, which was a lot of fun.

Mountaintop Groovy Robot Laser Battle by Jeremy Ryan 2017-08-01T04:04:40Z

Good music is a must for rhythm games and you nailed that. I wish there was some kind of visual indicator as to when I was supposed to press. I also wish it was easier to exit the game (maybe I was missing something, but I had to alt+tab out and close it from the toolbar). Still, the art style is fun and the music is banging so there's not much else I can ask for.

Back Home by Angry Squirrels 2017-08-08T01:19:55Z

The first time I played it, I spun wildly out of control and got horrible vertigo. The second time, I figured out the controls and had a ton of fun. It controls like I imagine an actual glider would control, which made the game feel amazing whenever I managed to maneuver it correctly. The music and general aesthetic were impeccable, but it did feel a little weird that the music was still as calm as ever as I plummeted to my death. All around a super fun experience!

Running out of Butter by Particles GameStudio 2017-08-02T05:07:18Z

A fun platformer in the style of Super Meat Boy. The art is really good, the butter is really cute. The controls are slippery (which makes sense, since you're butter), but it makes precision platforming trickier than it has to be.

LifeRunner ~~~O by ruba 2017-08-05T19:15:05Z

When you manage to chain a bunch of powerups together, there's a really fun sense of speed, but the rest of the time it's slow in a frustrating way. Also, powerups spawning in the danger zone is annoying.

PLUG ME ! by Ramou 2017-08-01T04:21:52Z

A very fun racing game, nice sense of speed to it. I did what the game told me not to and pressed M. I didn't regret it.

MoonBall by CurseTats 2017-08-06T06:59:32Z

The track on the menu screen was a banger but I didn't think the one in game really suited it. The idea for an exploration platformer is really cool but it's hard to explore when you can't see where you're going.

Shield Defender by realryanrogers 2017-08-02T02:36:29Z

A simple but well executed game. A very clean style, it looked nice. One suggestion: having the debris make a different noise if it hits the generator would be nice.

Adrift by Brendan Engelman 2017-08-01T04:13:24Z

Execution failed on Windows, saying "There should be 'adrift_Data' folder next to the executable"

Rats will kiss the gunner's daughter by Mr.Houdini 2017-08-10T01:07:21Z

With the update, this game is an absolute joy to play. The logic aspect of it (if you don't try to game the system too much) is a lot of fun - and they weren't kidding when they say you need a notebook. The polish put into the game, especially from the art side of it, was incredible. I really can't exaggerate how nice the artwork is, and how clear the function of everything on the screen is.

The major note I have for improvement is the music. It's supposed to be a tense, paranoid game (and it succeeds with that in most aspects), but the music doesn't reflect any growing paranoia. Bringing in some more instrumentation near the end would be a really nice touch.

Also, a minor thing: when the text is being written, when it reaches the edge of the box, it hops down to the next line. It was a little distracting.

An amazing effort all around!

Tornado by splashshadow 2017-08-01T07:25:52Z

A cute little climbing game! I had fun with this, climbing through a generated level was neat. The controls were a little loose - it was hard to make precision jumps. Other than that, it did exactly what it set out to do!

Greenhouse Dystopia by DeadlyAlive 2017-08-01T00:52:23Z

The pixel art on this is really good, and I really like the idea. I wish the running wasn't so slidy - it takes forever to turn around, which usually left me running into every enemy. Also, is it even possible to win? I think you may lose power too fast to actually beat it.

The Last by Vija02 2017-08-01T06:10:07Z

Has some pretty cool atmosphere, actually. The game works as a sort of slow exploration, and the narrative is compelling. The movement is a little wonky, and the graphics aren't very ambitious, but what's there serves as a very interesting game.

One In the Chamber, One In the Socket by notApollogising 2017-08-01T04:40:15Z

Cool concept for the game! Well executed too, it's fun. I wish you could restart after you die, though, instead of closing the game.

Cosmo Beat by Super Shark 2017-08-08T01:43:22Z

Oh my god the music in this game is incredible. Is there some way that it could be made available separately? Outside of that, I can only parrot the other feedback. Art is great, the mechanics work with the music super well (although I wish that sometimes the shields went down along with the rhythm of the music and not just at even intervals - it would be nice to change the pattern sometimes). Seriously, amazing work.

Dadoor by IgorFolz 2017-08-02T01:53:36Z

The art style was really charming, gameplay was fast and fun. Nice touch with the abilities, too, they really brought something to the gameplay. A bug: I spun next to the wizard and fell through the floor into a black nothingness. Other than that, a great showing!

The Final Boss: Running Out of Powers by n.feofentov 2017-08-06T07:14:26Z

Running circles around bad guys and blowing up tons of them with a wide spread of bullets ends up being a ton of fun, as is chasing down the boss from room to room. One suggestion: I wish the game came down on a side of top-down shooter versus bullet hell. If top down shooter, it needs to be more lenient about the number of hits you can take, or give health drops. If bullet hell, the bullets themselves should be more clearly visible and move slower. As it stands, the only viable option is to circle strafe, which is fine, but combat could be tweaked to allow for more skillful gameplay.

Flastronaut by Bill Zeng 2017-08-02T05:46:40Z

The flashstronaut is very cute. The art style is very easy to read. The idea of having the flashlight be both a means to grow the flower and protect it is a really interesting mechanic. But it meant that I could usually do both at once - stand off to the side and shine on the flower and any ghosts around it. I think it would be more interesting if the ghosts could attack from further away so you had to decide whether to grow the flower or attack ghosts.

Wave by logiraffe_shawn 2017-08-02T03:59:58Z

I really love the music and the atmosphere and the art style and basically everything aesthetic about the game is spot on. Not sure how the green stuff you collect ties into the story, or what it was at all. Watching a bunch of animals die over and over made me sad.

Till the last spin by KiiroHanabi 2017-08-08T06:31:18Z

I really love the framing of the game, and visually it looked very nice, very clean. I like the shifting rows of notes in concept, but I found that it only served to punish me when I missed notes, so that I kept missing notes, and they kept shifting, and so on.

The Floor Isn't Lava by InappropriateName 2017-08-01T03:47:44Z

An interesting game, it plays like an infinite runner (Canabalt) where you have to hold right by yourself. Another interesting thing: if you fall off, you can catch yourself on the side of a building. You can't do anything from there except escape your imminent demise, but I thought it was funny.

Deep Space Burrito by Shamuel 2017-08-01T03:41:06Z

Like has been said, I really love the art style, it's straight out of the mid 2000s in the best kind of way. One issue I ran into was the mouse movement - having to scroll past the side of the screen to move around led to me always clicking outside the window and closing it. Still, a cute and funny game.

Oppressiv Light by Yulirev 2017-08-08T06:22:48Z

The first time the monster yelled scared the shit out of me. I liked using exploration to distract the player to get them set up for the scares.

Number Station by maxr00 2017-08-01T04:47:47Z

This game absolutely nails atmosphere. It reminded me a lot of Oxenfree, actually, lonely ambiance with radio noises. It's nice, nicely nostalgic. The puzzles were cool but the standout was definitely the ambiance.

R0m-B4 by Hugh Williams 2017-08-10T06:41:30Z

Having to balance the efficiency of your route with scanning to remind yourself of the path is a really good idea. The issue the game runs into is that it always gives you the ability to scan, but it's pretty much always a bad idea unless you're on a charge pad. It could be interesting if there was more of a choice to be made about when to scan.

Growing Pains by ctjet99 2017-08-01T06:29:05Z

Not to spoil the game, but the moment when I realized the sperm minigame and the car driving minigame were basically the same was, like, a revelatory moment for me. So thanks for that.

Cat Herder - THE CATPOCALYPSE by Meanderthal 2017-08-08T02:17:00Z

The cats running away from you actually felt pretty nice to control - similar minigames (Legend of Zelda) usually feel pretty wonky, but this didn't. The sound effect got annoying about halfway through but outside of that I had a good time.

@stubbyrogue46 I found this - might be relevant to that issue. https://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=27462

Planet Wars: Energy Crisis by zaygellard 2017-08-01T04:09:59Z

Really fun! You move around crazy fast and there's not really any penalty for doing so, which is nice. You get a good sense of speed. The controls were a little buggy - sometimes I would shoot off in one direction without pressing anything. Also, maybe an issue with spawning other planets? I found just a row of like ten of them at one point. Still, very fun, I had a huge smile on my face playing it.

Power Up by MMM 2017-08-01T01:10:23Z

I really liked the music in this! Nice and subtle, great atmosphere. It looked nice too, but I wonder why all of it is on the right side of the screen. Also, I had a hard time telling what was in the foreground and what was in the background, which made rotating into the blue ones hard.

Industria by rb2750 2017-08-01T03:23:32Z

I don't get to play games like this often that feel fast, but this is a very quick game, which is appreciated. It would be more fun if the power system were more intuitive - I can build more and more power stations but don't get any additional power, which I'm not sure if that's a bug or some system I don't understand. Still, a good showing.

Powerless: Trump Teaches Typing by RootPew 2017-08-01T05:34:13Z

Concept is good, wish it changed things up a little. But, hey, it delivers exactly what it says on the tin, and with a good amount of polish, so I can't complain.

Night Driver by nbitsstudio 2017-08-01T04:58:51Z

Goes all out for the aesthetic and basically nails it. Racing is really fun too, fast - and drifting is really fun. A lot of jumps too, which made me feel really cool. Physics is a little wonky, but I had almost as much fun wrecking my car as I did racing. Also, it lets you keep playing even after you run out of power, which was nice of them.
