LD57 — Depths

Moos from the Depth of Space by notnasiul 2025-04-20T18:34:14Z

I really do like this one, absolutely adorable sprite design and a solid gameplay.

Flying being on up is breaks my brain for some reason, it's 100% a me problem but I strongly feel that I would prefer thrust being on a button (especially considering that the second pico 8 button is unused). Tried it on a keyboard, have beaten it on a physical device with d-pad and it still control felt weird for me.

Aerofish Project by almost 2025-04-25T19:34:48Z

I like the mechanic where you need to protect the core of your base that is periodically moving, very innovative. And the artstyle is simply gorgeous. Player onboarding is well done. The lack of audio is unfortunate, but understandable.

Clock In by leparlon 2025-04-13T18:56:27Z

This one makes me feel things. How can i describe it, Papers, please with a dose of Severance perhaps? It also reminds me of a game Will die alone in some regard.

It's very atmospheric and i love the use of gameplay (taking away a player choice) as a storytelling method. Very innovative!

Hyperspacedive by marudziik 2025-04-16T11:55:32Z

Is nice, I only was able to reach level 7 so far. Web version is hanging up for me after a loss, though.

Pack by Jeremy Ryan 2025-04-25T11:59:22Z

I like it, it's reverse unpacking, well, packing!

Super cosy with excellent pixel art and nice references, music sets mood very well, last level is quite a brain teaser.

Wishlisted on steam.

How the Moon Got Its Colors by Carraka 2025-04-11T19:39:06Z

I loved the atmosphere and ambiance and just like a @threegoldeneggs @joscco and @alphabetasoup i used right mouse button for much of time, its very overpowered. Music is pleasant, very relaxed and poetic game overall and its also very polished, except i had some collision problems with those cows, i was stuck and tears were too. Stuck I also enjoyed the color changing mechanic, how color becomes more vibrant with time.

While i really enjoyed aesthetic and mood i feel this game somewhat lacks in gameplay department, i wish there was some gameplay twist or more depth in mechanics. Strongly interested in post-jam version. results

How the Moon Got Its Colors by Carraka 2025-04-11T19:52:18Z

Bug report. Looks like moon doesn't come out after second playthrough without completely restarting game

A Quest To Bear by Fis 2025-04-18T13:04:23Z

What a cute, wonderful and polished game! Love it. Always a delight to see more puzzles! I really like the mechanics and puzzles, it's very good how having an inventory with ability to drop rocks changes this type of game! And the mood is very adorable with smooth animations. And the amount of levels is just right for a gamejam! Congratulations!

Some levels have a healing potions but nothing to be harmed with?

Small wish that I have is some kind of result screen after finishing the game. Perhaps the amount of steps taken overall and/or the amount of steps per each level. My entity in this GJ have this sort of screen (but with times instead of steps) so maybe this is why i am thinking about it, but also i feel that way i could compete with myself in trying to beat this game with the least steps possible, find the most optimized solution for each level.

The Apple of my Aperture by niterich 2025-04-25T17:17:53Z

Interesting interpretation of the theme. Cute intro and catchy tune.

I found that sepia filter makes it hard to judge if you are in focus or not, and i wish game had more player feedback.

Glad there are photography focused games in this jam and it's my honor to push this entry past 20 ratings.

Money Maker 2025 by yancharkin 2025-04-18T12:24:13Z

Why people don't post their scores? Mine is 156 and i think it's HUGE, probably the best score. Main character looks familiar, remind me of that actor with small role in a home alone 2. Probably just a coincidence.

This is the best game ever. It’s tremendous. Absolutely tremendous. I asked one of my friends, great guy by the way, and he said that he never seen game that good in his whole career. And everyone in the room agrees. Everyone in the whole country. Believe me. The sacks of money? Beautiful. The best sacks. They're HUGE, folks. Really big. And the graphics? Let me tell you, they’re fantastic. The best graphics. I mean, look at those money floating around! And you play as a handsome guy with beautiful balloons. Most handsome guy with the most beautiful balloons. Do yourself a favor play Money Maker 2025. Play it. Win! Be a champion! It’s going to be HUGE. Believe me. Снимок экрана 2025-04-18 в 15.05.59.png

angler by FrauKauz 2025-04-25T22:50:51Z

Very basic, but also very fun, the use of light that attract and also reveal you and spoke wish are well done. And really nice graphics, those fishes adorable. Blub Bloob!

Fantascope Chasm by RubixNoob13 2025-04-25T18:14:06Z

Those transitions between levels/depths are silky smooth!

Gameplay is very nice and controls, while unorthodox, works very well once you adjust to it.

I would say that lack of enemy variety makes a game a little repetitive but boss mitigates it.

Souls Rider 1D by deformhead 2025-04-18T11:54:44Z

Congratulation! What an interesting concept for a game! And i like how it's done and i especially impressed by it being a custom engine and a COMPO game! Very unusual and clever use of the theme - lack of depths. I end up only using two directions switching between them, it made it easier to visualize map. The small nitpick that i have is that N on the compass turns into Z when looking sideways, that confused me a little at the start.

abyss by A0405u 2025-04-16T11:22:57Z

Really like it, very innovative and the mechanics are quite deep, especially the way it combines resource management, building and physics. Very nice pixel art! The thing that I personally found lacking is player onboarding, while all the information is onscreen it's a bit unclear what to do and how in the first minutes of the game. But it's fun once you you understand and keep going! Would absolutely love to see the team expanding on this concept.

bucketbot by YellowKamel 2025-04-25T17:22:14Z

Down bucket well. Physics are well done.

Hooked by mira 2025-04-09T13:43:04Z

Short, but nice. Those rope / tube physics though.

Belly Flop by DarkWolf 2025-04-25T22:39:53Z

Short and quite fun!

Devil Elimination Party of Tactical Hunters by Teto 2025-04-25T18:55:20Z

Wow, there are so much great ideas in this one, the whole drilling down to go to next level is very innovative and great use of the theme! And destructible environment is also a nice touch. I like the whole mspaint aesthetic with cool wizard in sunglasses. And the gameplay is fun. But the game is also lack polish unfortunately. The player onboarding is almost non-existent, the upgrade menu is confusing and it's difficult to buy new abilities sometimes. The multi-level map can be quite disorienting and the squad health is not displayed when some of the members are wounded. 2 characters have quite low movement range initially. And game crashed for me on a 4th level (i think). I tried to decent the whole group at once. And i found an animal noises? in soundtrack a bit annoying.

I think it is very ambitious that the team created a whole tactical RPG strategy for the game jam, with update mechanics and interesting twist on the formula, but i also feel that the scope maybe was just too much for the timeframe and that resulted in game being unfocused and unpolished somewhat. I really hope the team will not be discouraged by my feedback (and the fact that they may potential not get 20 ratings, but i hope they will) and will create more projects in the future!

Spear Bird by renrok 2025-04-21T09:47:30Z

What a lovely idea and execution!

It plays very well and looks extremely stylish with this monochromatic look! It's also very polished.

Sound and music is cute.

My hight score is 3255 so far.

Caver by Harmadillo 2025-04-11T18:23:24Z

I do like this concept it's quite unique! And having a procedural generation is very neat, specially in a COMPO! I do agree with @axlplosion that the text descriptions are really elevate this concept, but i am also not sure if its possible to win like @floppynub mentioned. I feel possible goals could be just to reach the deepest level (and perhaps go into new run) or find and retrieve something to the surface While i don't get confused by control scene like @kroltan i do agree that keys would be slightly better, but current t control scheme don’t detract from this COMPO game for me personally. What i am not a fun is music, but it's very easy to turn it (Thanks for settings) off in the setting and listen to something that i find more moody. And i also feel that balance is a bit off, too much rope and not enough torches.results1.png

Keep Hopping by Halogen 2025-04-18T12:37:27Z

Also immediately jumped to the strategy of press 7 repeatedly to win or not to lose to be exact. Maybe idea could be improved if you only had a limited number of blocks or if there was a mechanic of changing elevation of the jumping character and collecting something, like more blocks. And for me character also doesn't jump after restart just like @fis said.

Toby's Room by Lipski 2025-04-10T18:16:41Z

I like this take on a theme and the execution is very well done! Very nice art style and music.

Rooted Deep by DzejPi 2025-04-25T19:13:21Z

This one is really nice and has a good idea executed very well. Especially impressive for COMPO.

Price of upgrades felt a little bit off to me, though, but i can't put my a finger on why exactly.

MS Drowning by Anton Florey 2025-04-25T08:44:50Z

This is really good, excellent entry, congratulations! Very good graphics (especially use of light) moody soundtrack and gameplay and the control is super fun. I discover that you can climb certain walls by grabbing it with the claw and it become even more fun! The amount of polish and content are amazing. You can sell everything that you can move - rocks and even fish, beside obvious things of course. I like this gameplay loop and how agile and fast robot feels when fully upgraded! Story is surprisingly involved and has a nice conclusion. Very impressive. Greatly enjoyed it!

I managed to go 3.5 km deep in one spot!

TRENCH by toilari 2025-04-09T18:35:22Z

Wow, that's really really good! Really well done art style, gameplay and the game levels are procedurally generated, right?

I feel that i would bought a greatly expanded and polished version of this game with some form of metaprogression!

Also i managed to somehow drop right through the first update shop witout a chance to buy anything 🥲

I blame goddamn Frank!

TRENCH by toilari 2025-04-10T18:13:08Z

@toilari thanks for explanation about how procedural generation works. It's really smart!

Morally GrayStone Corp by T90. 2025-04-25T11:39:38Z

Impressive, very nice! Let's see Morally GrayStone Corp game.

Look at that subtle humorous writing with references to current events.

The tasteful pixel-art of it.

Oh my God! It even has a results screen in credits!

Turtle slide by Ansible 2025-04-09T13:32:05Z

It's a nice rage game, kind of reminds me of a flash era and the graphic design is addable

Into The Mousehole by Baldurs 2025-04-24T22:16:51Z

Strong downwell energy! But featuring a cat.

Polished and fun with 1-bit pixel art!

Trench Diver by Hatherton 2025-04-18T20:07:07Z

I really love how this game looks and sounds, the mood is great and the style is brilliant. But i don't exactly love how it plays especially with how awkward the aim is. And i think the part of it is that the first and most common enemy is the eel and when it is facing a player it's a really narrow target, difficult to reliably hit. I have reached 123 meters before dying.

Go to sleep... by eeldam 2025-04-25T17:37:17Z

Unusual take on theme, but very difficult.

Deeper by BlackCat508 2025-04-21T14:46:13Z

What a nice entry. This got to be one of the most powerful laser shotguns ever! I like the idea and execution, the sprites are really nice and the gameplay/gamefeal is quite tight, very precise. Congratulation on doing it in only 8 hours! Very impressive!

Drill la Drill by FrogtownMatt 2025-04-08T02:25:56Z

I liked it, aesthetic and choses of colors, i especially liked the rotating fan / double blade obstacle it looked very good and music was nice! One thing i missed is some kind of real time scoring system during gameplay.

Depths of Death by Philocode 2025-04-25T18:24:15Z

I like the upgrade system and the fact that you can peak debuffs for additional money is very nice.

The Core by willianfhs 2025-04-13T19:11:55Z

Ride down the pipe, collect white orbs, dodge pink arches, good times!

It's a really polished and fun arcade title, very well made! Graphics are unusual and stylish!

Seed from Depths by Zamizmi 2025-04-11T18:40:25Z

It's very short, but enjoyable. The web version worked fine for me. I do like the concept and the the revel in the end and the basic mechanic of changing water level is somewhat similar to my entry, actually. Sound design i would rate us Hoo and Huh out of ten :-). I kind of was disappointed a little that cannons don't do sound like brrr or ptish. Also some collisions on grey rocks were a little strange/junky on a web version.Снимок экрана 2025-04-11 в 21.35.58.png

Deck Digger by ghettobastler 2025-04-11T16:51:11Z

I am a sucker for deck builders so i am naturally like this game! Its very impressive, especially considering this is a COMPO entry. The art is adorable, really like it! I find a difficulty curve a bit steep though.

Tout au fond (at the very bottom) by PieRo_PBeS_studio 2025-04-09T13:06:46Z

I really like it and its quite long. In a way it feels kind of like a lost game from a Nokia phone and i mean it in the best possible way. And sprite work is really cute. Level design is quite challenging at times and an enemy variety is good! Combined upgrade and health system reminds me of old shmups! Small (really small) nitpick is I wish that afterhit invincibility would not prevent player from collecting diamonds/yellow spheres.

Debt Bust by JAMESDEV 2025-04-20T22:04:01Z

I really like the concept of this one! Buckshot dicette. I think this concept is deserved to be expanded and explored further. More dice types, maybe some sort of deckbuiding (dicebuilding in this case) mechanic or abilities/items, more interactions with dealer perhaps? Execution is also well done, wish for a button to speed up animations, thoug.

Снимок экрана 2025-04-21 в 00.58.23.png

Dredge by Snore 2025-04-16T11:41:31Z

I really loved the graphical style and music/sound and the idea for game loop, but i also feel the controls lack polish somewhat. The collisions on grab action are really narrow and sometimes seems to not work? Especially after throwing the treasures. And I also feel that fishes are too aggressive (and recover too quickly) or just too aggressively placed. But overall it's fun, it's just too satisfying to bonk on the head fishes with treasures!

Descend by Placeholders 2025-04-20T21:34:03Z

Love the music and the atmosphere, very experimental experience.

1-bit abstract and geometric style is very well done!

D.R.I.L.L .inc by Kaspar Saarekivi 2025-04-25T17:51:10Z

Nice core loop, but i feel you are entirely on mercy of a random if you will have an oil available before running out, especially before the couple upgrades.

into the forest depths by Fliegen 2025-04-25T12:18:02Z

Amazing art and a polished game!

Undertetris by Rinevard 2025-04-16T12:11:38Z

It's a very interesting idea that is well done. Always a delight to see more puzzle platformers in this jam. I wish it would have more levels and maybe mechanics, but the length is good considering timeframe, especially for COMPO entries. Also i managed to softlock myself 2 times, so maybe a dedicated reset level button would be nice, I used R in my submission. I hope this idea will be developed further!

. by protzz 2025-04-11T19:13:17Z

~~Amazing! Serious inscription vibes with a little bit of balatro mixed in! Very dark atmosphere. I hope that this concept will be developed further! I also wish for a more smooth onboarding.~~

~~Reporting a few glitches on mac, the player position was not rendered on a map and joker's descriptions were invisible. The pair combination one time wasn't recognized. It was a pair of aces if it any help.~~

WTF is that behavior

Abimes by Kessel Nebula 2025-04-11T20:04:10Z

Art is really breathtaking! I absolutely love it, the whole aesthetic. The music is alos very good, but i wish it looped and transition more seamlessly. And while the game ends a little abruptly i did really enjoy playing through it and just breathing atmosphere in!

HellDigger – A Cozy Idle Game by sangheli 2025-04-10T18:10:06Z

It's a nice idle game. But i do agree with @flinge and @basekeet that it is missing sound and some light background music, that would really elevate the experience and enhance feedback to the player.

Airman57 by Prvaak 2025-04-24T23:20:29Z

This is very well done, but also very hard. I can describe it as First 2 Newton's laws of motion: The Game! The graphics are well done, the variety of asteroids are especially impressive. And gameplay is super solid, easy to understand, but hard to master. The music is suitably chosen and i didn't find sfx grading, surprisingly it's not annoying, despite all you do is fire thrusters (including rotational ones) so sfx could have been annoying easily, but they are not in my opinion. But perhaps it's down to audio situation of specific players.

Nice idea with mission starting with 57 and then incrementing.

Parallax background would be welcomed indeed. And I also like the idea (by @antti-haavikko) of structuring game with missions to have a more graduate difficulty curve.

The strong force applied to the rocket after the impact feels a bit strong and for me it often lead to more collisions and fast demise. Also I sometimes forget which way rocket is facing and it's hard to tell at a glance. While nose is rounder and it has thrusters (but they are dark on dark background) i think something like a colored stripe near nose (or back) of the rocket would enhance reliability.

I enjoyed the game it's fun and have a nice audio visual appeal, but difficulty is a bit high I personally feel. But still fun, I feel i will replay it from time to time, it has good vibes from flash era of games!

Beneath the Ground by drFoxxx 2025-04-24T22:37:39Z

Very interesting idea and concept for a game, nice use of the theme, ui is fun. Feels like there is a complicated system going beneath.

Absolutely needs a tutorial though, something more involved then slides. And the player should have ability to read mission after accepting. While music would be nice I feel that the whole scanning action could have an audio feedback that helps with understanding.

Very innovative and has a great potential to be massively expanded into full game, but player onboarding needs to be sorted out. Excellent potential to build interesting lore, and maybe for even expanded gameplay loop/different game phases. I hope dr.Foxxx will continue developing this idea. We will watch it with great interest.

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-08T02:10:56Z

@maybeagoose Thanks!

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-08T02:14:24Z

@python-b5 Thank you! Ye, softlocks become kind of the unintentional mechanic with two different total timers one counts resets and other doesn't.

Yes, i just fixed and was updating description. Timing!

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-08T02:16:08Z

@frogtownmatt It's quite quicker than my testers were able to do it first try! 👍 Thanks! Perhaps not so unintended 😏

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-24T00:33:20Z

@piero-pbes-studio Thank you!

@ansible Thanks! The cat is a longboi. Or longgirl. Longcat anyway !

@sangheli I am quite fond of it, can't you tell :-)

@jadener Thank you, I also feel this is an appropriate amount of time for a GameJam.

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-24T00:53:37Z

@mikemikemakes Thank you, yes, it's result of a jam, but we are all under that time constrain and it's part of the fun!

@ghettobastler Thanks and appreciate posting results!

@drfoxxx Thank you and i actually wrote a post about non text communication about difference between box and key here it is if you want to read it: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/game-and-physics-water-cat/the-things-i-learned-during-this-jam-part-2

@harmadillo Thanks, its something I struggled with, not wanting to create more complexity in controls. There is a priority system that in theory should prioritize certain items (per level) but it's not entirely reliable unfortunately.

@larsievl Thank you, I was not sure if I would be able to make control with mouse/touch possible in time, but managed it.

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-24T01:03:47Z

@leparlon Thanks and I appreciate you posting the results!

@willianfhs Thank you, do you by any chance remember what was not clear?

@a0405u Thanks, i quite like this level specifically and even wrote about it in this post if you interested : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/game-and-physics-water-cat/the-things-i-learned-during-this-jam-part-2

@gordo-mcschnordo Thank you, yes, playing without arcs is frustrating, so they were implemented very early.

@yancharkin Thanks!

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-24T01:14:03Z

@carraka and @zettelkasten Thanks, I was afraid that this aspect would come out as mean or even sadistic and not humorous, but i think in the end animation and retro sound effects helped to make it right.

@deformhead @oliver-day Thank you.

@prvaak WOW, thank you, I am flattered!

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-24T01:22:36Z

@marudziik Thank you and I really appreciate your detailed feedback with constructive criticism. Yes, the R tutorial really should be earlier, it's possible to softlock yourself before this information is shown, my plan was to mitigate it by making a softlock detection system, it would light up the reset button (on device) and highlight text (R - RESET also on device) but unfortunately I ran out of time and didn't implement it. And i do agree, game could be more visually coherent.

Game and Physics: Water Cat by MoD_Wiz 2025-04-24T01:34:47Z

Also i want to specifically comment about repetitive feel that @zettelkasten, @carraka and @mikemikemakes mentioned. I do think that more mechanics could have made the game and levels more enjoyable, i feel there is a certain lack of variety of mechanics, perhaps? 🤔 I also think that part of it is that I maybe put too much attention in hammering mechanics through level design and overdid it, I wrote a blog post about it here:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/game-and-physics-water-cat/the-things-i-learned-during-this-jam-part-2

Maybe this feeling could be somewhat mitigated if game had less levels, since some of them have similarity between them and also some levels take much more time to beat (even if you try yo speedrun, when you know solutions) comparative to others.

Thank you all for feedback!

Debt Miner by fungus mundus 2025-04-21T15:04:32Z

I payed Dheetz and now i am free!

What a nice quirky game, i like the concept and would love to see it expanded. It's a little bit repetitive but fun.

Deep Into The Well by HardEggGames 2025-04-25T17:59:39Z

Indeed strong FNaF vibes. There are hands constantly visible when playing ultrawide though.

Crypt by Sam Flemington 2025-04-25T10:44:45Z

That is a one nice entry! Gameplay is good, graphics are appealing in low res style and the audio is fantastic. The fact that i can just tell the size of a cave i am in from audio/footsteps is really impressive! Is some form of raytracing used for audio?

Procedural generation is also very well done and exiting to see, especially in the COMPO category!

Hope this entry will be reviewed more to be pushed over 20 votes threshold. I am doing my part!

Note: i have a repeated problem where i would dismount unintentionally or fail to grab ropes. Not sure why, it works most of the time. Also feels like player should be able to use rope while being on one.

Crypt by Sam Flemington 2025-04-26T22:18:48Z

@sam-flemington I appreciate the explanation. This system works really well!

Ropes are hard, numerous examples in commercially released games are proof of that. It wasn't a hindrance.

Congratulations on making it past 20 ratings!
