BBS. Room One by Alexander Kondyrev 2016-12-13T09:57:00

Its an interresting idea and a great output given the time. I feel the only weakness with this game comes with the platforming being a little wonky and what starts out as just good solid game development (tutorials being simply push X button) turns a tad confusing when you get to the "gun recoil" section. Its not that its difficult (challenge is a good thing) but i spent a bit figuring out i had to get those symbol things. Furthermore In platforming in that section was a tad unintuitive. Unlike the other sections, each challenge needed the new mechanic to be beaten, but with recoil, you didnt know what the effects of it were and how it affected you until you explored the maze and started making assumptions.

I had played cave story in the past so i tried to propel myself up with the recoil only then did i figure out if i ran forward and abruptly turned + fired i could get the symbol in the bottom. I only tried this BECAUSE i had played Cave Story in the past.

Overall the game is a nice idea and i recomend you expand on it

@peredm

Hello Peredm,

I believe you do not understand the rules of how lumdumdare works, so allow me to explain:
according to the rules, one must have legal right to use art and all assets in the game, if you use art that you did not make for the jam, as long as you opt out from that category. as per the rules:
"You’re free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but we ask that you OPT-OUT of the respected voting categories (Graphics, Audio). You can opt-out of a voting category when you submit your game."
We purchased most of the assets used in the unity store, created some ourselves, and used some from openart that stated did not need crediting.
Please read the rules before making blatant accusations.

Mercenary: Breakout! by dreamingdice 2017-01-06T21:27:00

The music was created from our musician which is why we only opted out of the graphics.

Interresting concept and fitting with the game jam theme. Controls a bit clunky tho but overall works.

Room Builder by peredm 2017-01-06T21:31:00

Good job on the game but i would like to clear up a unfair acusation you made about our game:
You said we "used someone elses art without credit" and asked us to read the rules, however, according to the rules:
"You’re free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but we ask that you OPT-OUT of the respected voting categories (Graphics, Audio). You can opt-out of a voting category when you submit your game."
The majority of the art we used we purchased from the unity store, hence granting us legal right to use. The rest was either created by ourselves or used from opengameart, in which the user specified we did not need to credit the source.
We appreciate you taking the time to play our game but in the future please read the rules before making unnecessary accusations.
Good work on your game!

Great work, shouldn't leave it as just a game jam project. only nitpick is i can fire from almost anywhere and always score, making jumping a little bit useless, but as i said, thats a silly nitpick.

Nice job, my main issues are its a little laggy and a tad difficult to control but its still an interesting approach! The theme is also spot on!

Works as advertised. I like the fact the tetris idea was used for this jam as its a good interpretation (one I argued in favor of in my discord, forgive my shilling but here is the invite if anyone wants it https://discord.gg/amwhTDX ). Good work, advise for next time, just make what you feel like making dont let the theme og you down!

Demonologist by Ghen 2018-08-24T18:28:48Z

Neet little game with a ton of lore! I will echo what others have said and say some feedback on hitting the totem would be good (also its unclear to me if the totems actually are hit by my blasts or if standing in them kills me). Also some kind of indicator to where the totem is would help as its mostly just hope you stumble on it. Overall just balancing issues which is normal for a jam, great work, loved the art!

Simply Fantastic compo entry. whenever I play a game, i try first to play it without reading anything, to see how intuitive the game is, I dont take points off or anything (as strategy games for example, like the one me and my team made(wink wink nudge nudge), sometimes have some requiered reading) its just something I like to do first. Your game is intuitive and easy to grasp, the game teaches you its own ins and outs without forcing me to pause and read (one thing is to explain rules, another is to be forced to give "tips"). For example, you learn real quick that droping to each floor as quick as posible is proably not smart, as you wont see whats coming if you do. If you are too carefull however, you will RUN OUT OF SPACE.

Good work my friend. I did see two things im not sure are bugs or not: 1-when the celling kills you, you blink and die a few seconds later rather then an insta death + explosion 2- zombies can be killed with bolders OR jumping on them

Thanks @the-triumvirate and @gilgusmaximus for your comments. We did not make the Art and opted out of being rated on it (dunno why ludum does not show that) But we have both set images to be Point (no filter) and did some slight balancing to increase dificulty a bit. We left it easy as it is usually better for ludum games to be easy as those who play it dont tend to do so for too long. Thank you both! We will be pushing the image fix on monday and the deficulty patch is already up!

Tales Of Steel And Mana: Empire's Birth by DreamingDice 2018-08-30T19:03:16Z

@lamossus First off thank you for playing our game. Id like to address your comments in order:

1) We opted out in art. As per the rules this indicates both that we did not make the assets in the Jam and do not wish to be judged by it. The reason for this is we intend to continue this game. We mainly used this jam to get feedback on the combat system (which is bones here) and the over world (party management and stamina system). We also wanted to get a feel on how intuitive these elements were. The art we have here are either purchased or the artist do not require mentioning. There are three exceptions that are in the itch.io page. We included this post launch (as originally it was in the credits screen but said screen had some graphics issues so we deactivated that button and forgot to update this) so I will assume we included it after your review. Just as I am giving you the benefit of the doubt, maybe you should do the same in the future as your comments may have some nasty connotations. I admire your intentions of protecting artists, and share your concerns.

2) The game in its current form is a strategy and party management game. Its meant to be slow and deliberate as games in this genre tend to be. Stamina limits your daily actions and misusing it will lead to wasting days. Enemies grow stronger every certain amount of days so managing your income and stamina while you hunt the two bosses is key. Its fine if you didn’t enjoy it and we will definitely look into ways of speeding things up as I agree some aspects may be a little sluggish, like movement time.

3) Combat Is partially explained in the images and in the stats of your party members. Some people got it, others didn’t, we now know what we need to improve for the full game, if you come into our discord il happily explain but wont do so here as it would spoilt the test for any new players

4) We kinda of wrote things quickly and didn’t proof read, if you could point out some of the typo mistakes it would mean a lot. We tested multiple fonts and agree that some of them are hard to read Thank you for your feedback, it means a ton. The rest of you I have yet to address, some of your comments are responded here and some I have talked to on our discord. https://discord.gg/amwhTDX

This was surprisinggly fun! I hope you guys work on this more cause i can see this as a little multiplayer game that people can play to kill the time, I played it for quite a bit great work! Seven for a Secret by bisente 2018-08-19T20:24:21Z

Loved the concept, trully outside the box! I had some minor bugs playing, like the raft not moving when i pressed space + WASD on a few ocations and minor graphical glitches (characters in rocks). Overall tho, unique and pretty awesome TBH. Loved that little slide show to give you the setting at the begining, the 2D artist is incredibly talented! Favorite detail of the gameplay was how you can add pieces to the raft yet said pieces dont "Snap" and insted go wherever you placed them

Hopeless Run by Cydouzo 2018-08-20T21:33:37Z

Pretty cool concept and actually very funny dialoge. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Bullet time made sense in the overall gameplay. One thing I may have missunderstood was that there is suppose to be an energy bar for the bullet time? I didnt see it in the web version.

Final Voyage by Simon Rahnasto 2018-08-24T17:30:28Z

Frankly, this was fantastic. Im a fan of strategy games and this fits the bill. Even as a tower defense you need to be smart about your investments and chose what your hill to die on (literally) will be. Well done, im shocked this was done in so little time. Good work! 10/10 would pick a corner and build three layers of walls again.

Intergalactic Inhabitance Mission by NNNIKKI 2018-08-30T17:27:41Z

Overall, a solid compo entry, well done.

The Good

Controls are clear and the in game tutorial is not intrusive. Objective is clear, no confusion in “what do I have to do” Nice music track, gives the “lost in space” vibe Black hole mechanic adds an extra edge.

What could be improved

There is a certain “Screen limit” that you kind of just find out when it kills you. You go enough south for example and you eventually run out of the screen and die. This is never really warned and just kind of “happens”. The player ship (in window mode) does not remain in the center of the screen but rather moves towards the direction he is moving (particularly noticeable when moving north or south) which causes some classic 90s “spawn deaths” aka something spawns and I cant avoid it because I couldn’t see it. Black hole is an interesting mechanic but one that is never explained and only thing I can get by intuition is to get as far away as possible. May be enough, maybe not. Background is tiled yet is not designed to be such, resulting in “square” after “square” being painfully visible. It’s a compo game and part of a jam so it may be unreasonable to point out. There does not seem to be any real difficulty increase in time, ad least in my limited play time. Feedback on inhabited planets, such as a ding or a more visible graphic would be nice

Shrunkeon Dungeon by DleanJeans 2018-08-30T17:53:41Z

Overall, fantastic experience. And to apparently been created by one person? Fantastic. The Controls are clear and intuitive, no need for 20 minute tutorials. Its faced paced and interesting. The graphics are simply adorable and the combat is solid. The things I believe should be improved are frankly the balancing and the level up season. The level up does not seem to make much of a difference other than a full heal. The sword is not worth using, it may pack a punch but you will quickly get overwhelmed and killed based on the fact enemies seem to always clump together. The fact it seems to have a chance to block arrows does not make it any more viable. These things however are minor and this is a game jam so its to be expected (people seem to forget that sometimes) great job!

Cartoon Tactics by Jiri Hysek 2018-08-26T12:16:28Z

God I had more fun with this then I should have xD. Jokes aside, I always love strategy games and this certainly is a Ludum Gem. While you never really feel any preasure from the world slowly pulling a battle royal effect on me, it does force engagements to not last forever as sometimes these Final Fantasy tactics like games do. More info like range and cost per action would be nice but overall a wonderfull game done in very little time. Particularly id like to point out that, ad least to strategy game veterns (as was my case) no reading was requiered, which is dificult to pull of with these kinds of games.

Only thing to work on if you chose to continue this game is to prehapes make the out realm (the part that disapears) preassure both teams a little more, maybe making more drop off with more frequency. Another solution would be to increase the team size (less space to manuver with a bigger team may result in the "edge" being more of a threat).

As I said fantastic work maybe come share your game at our discord https://discord.gg/amwhTDX

Animal Wrath by Jonathan Lorenz 2018-09-04T12:05:40Z

Ok so i really like the idea of making a grid based puzzle game, certainly its very unique! The puzzles are certainly brain scratchers and have a nice progresion so good work there. Your asking to be rated in Graphics but you should opt out since you are cleraly stating you used an asset pack and the ludum rules requests you opt out, the overall look of the game is consistent tho in case you wanted that rated, not a huge fan of that artstyle but its consistent which is what matters(the cars may be different but its not noticeable. The UI also needs some work but its a jam so no biggie, it works as intented.

Overall fine puzzles (catchy music) that are certainly worth the time invested to play it. Gameplay wise the only thing I would suggest is to make clear that stacking animals is not a bug but intended (make them appear smaller and side by side or when you hover the space to move on another animal make it a different color).

The Space Between Us by plufmot 2018-09-04T11:53:49Z

This was just a good time, plain and simple. Concept is clear, neat little surprises for paying attention such as droping down the 5 heart hole, clear collectables just wonderfull. I loved how intuitive most of it was, no need for complex tutorials (specially since its a platformes, The original Super Mario didnt need long explanations, it explained itself). And Hell, you get to play a side scrolling Asteroids (Ship 2) after beating the level? wonderfull. I do have some complaints like how the red squares in the drop sequence look just like collectibles but its minor. You didnt ask to be rated on audio or graphics but they were both wonderfully selected, good work. 10/10 would nostalgia hard again.

The City Of Forgotten Toys by dk5000p 2018-09-04T14:43:10Z

So first off congrats on making a Comp game, thats a serious undertaking. The graphics while simple were consistent and people tend to think awesome graphics that look like they ae part of multiple different games trumps simpler graphics that are consistent so good work in that regards. Everything fits with the theme and you absolute madlad even added a voice over tutorial! Color me impressed.

The gameplay is clear tho what makes the mayor show up, and what that even means isint. The controls are solid and the audio....God the audio, is such a wonderfull masterpiece of memes that frankly, it makes the the first game I rate 5/5 in humor. Its overall a solid simple platformer with some bugs (I do a crazy high jump sometimes out of the blue) and I still dont know what those yellow things are (I think toys, i collected them regardless) and there seems to be no reason to avoid the tenis balls as there is really no visual feedback, no health bar and time didnt go down for me.

Still overall good work on this Comp game.

Scary Hand/10 would pararaparara/woosh! again.

First off,I love the fact you made this with Construct, trully a case of selecting the correct tool for the task! Art is extreamly impresive and audio is better then it has any right to be for a 48 hour jam. Would of liked to see some collectables and different enemys but frankly for a jam that is probably unreasonable. Dificulty increase is just right and shows some true thought into level design. Overall, fantastic work!

WearOut by Abhis1Kadian 2018-09-04T17:21:28Z

It looks very solid overall. HAs a very tight graphical presentation, fluid animations and even a little intro video with some humor that sets up the game very well. I do have to say however, I didnt figure out how to lose space until I just let a few guys pass, so perhaps this needs some incentive for the guys to actually pass as more often then not, I just die. Overall, solid and easy to grasp, well done!

CrumbleDungeon by Celdur 2018-08-16T16:47:04Z

A nice little strategy/puzzle game. Pitty there was no time for audio. For a one person game jam game tho its very impresive. I enjoyed the two in one gameplay of being concerned with what I have left, what to leave behind and what to use. The little puzzle in your inventory was a nice. My only minor complaint is it seems there is a very specific way to beat the map, tho im not sure as there seems to be 2 more weapons then their are enemies.

Great work, keep working on it, Its shockingly addicting.

Really liked this one! Music and ambience is fantastic! This is an example of a good Ludum game: Simple and addictive. Small things like the screen default site were nice touches and the music fits great. The escalation of difficulty is just right and its one of the things that is the hardest to get right, well done! If you plan to continue it, perhaps some more variety like power ups and different screen formats (more lanes maybe go crazy and make them horizontal) would be nice!

@qzqxq First of all thank you for taking the time to write this. We wanted to see how far people would get without too much of an explanation and your review pretty much answers that question for us. I will say some 3d models were missing from the game (there is another token placed on space where the key is, top right corner, if you hover on this the space will change to an exclamation point). These models have been added and an explanation has been placed on both the itch.io page and in game. If you have a chance, give it another shot! Cards can only be played in certain moments, a card that adds +X to dice is referring to a trial, where you roll dice equal with your stats.

The Curse of Jen-Rah by AtomFox0213 2019-05-21T19:00:59Z

I really liked the story and the message, its simple (nothing is free/nothing comes cheap/ money cant buy you time ect) but relevant specially today. I will say, it needs some more choices and player interaction, its a great story and for a ludum its more than enough, but for the future, and for it to live up to the "game" part of narrative game, there should be ad least some way to lose. Regardless, its rare to see a clearly complete story in a ludum so well done, My lore is always missing a big chunk in ludums xD

SERVUS BONUS by gurkenlabs 2019-05-14T08:06:15Z

At first, I got a pikmin vibe and thought the free slaves that kinda follow you around would come into play a bit more. Many have mentioned the issue with the core gameplay mechanic, being that you dont have a dodge or block. I thin its not as critical as some may have made it down and perhapes simply having the slaves add some kind of buff to resist damage, add speed, add health ect could improve this further. Regardless, its a jam and for a jam this game is simply quality, chin up! you did a great job and the fact we are debating gameplay mechanics should tell you the potential this has overall, and how good it is as a jam entry, congrats!

Life Merchant by Webox 2019-05-19T18:01:14Z

I really liked the use of old school graphics and enjoyed the overall concept. For future itterations, maybe some more routes and options to complete a single level would be cool. Overall puzzles were easy to understand and intuitive. A great game for a Ludum that allows people to understand it quickly without having to spend hours learning the mechanics, well done!

Gore by Tudvari 2019-05-13T11:43:42Z

Absolutely loved the mood. Lighting, low key music and the attention to detail (like those weird markings on the floor) was simply awesome, this being a compo game makes that even more impressive. I think the main points to address for future itterations would be optimizations and some more variety in gameplay. I didnt find a boss but that may be I didn´t put enough time into the game. Good Work!

GTApp - Great Tube App by Gaming Night 2019-05-13T11:55:48Z

Ran over a guy and had bruce willis donate 383 bucks. 10/10 would run over people for donations again. In a more serious note, really interresting take on the theme. Has to be one of the more original ideas out there. My only complaint is that the goal is not really clear, if it has none and its just an arcadey "play for high score" feel then I may have missed that and its my fault. Good work regardless. bruce.png

The dangerous life of an indie dev by ougrouk 2019-05-10T07:42:02Z

Simple concept, simple controls, simple to understand. Very nice idea and the simplicity allowed me to just jump in and play. However it can be deceiving, I lost despite ending up having 108% dev done because I didnt go into early access, which simultaneously left me with no cash. This is clearly on me since I had wasted a lot of cash to further development (I still had a month of game time left!). Definitely something you can iterate on, fun, simple yet not "easy". Think ahead. Also the dialogue alone is enough to carry this game even without the depth it clearly has. I love that my bad choices can lead me to fail, and frankly as a dev, a lot of this hits close to home! xD

Deal With the Devil by Firepit games 2019-05-19T17:01:09Z

Nice entry man. The graphics and sound are fantastic and the intro movie really floored me, don’t see those too often in a game jam. I loved the little Easter egg where if you hit "no" in the beginning, game just closes (lol). I think the only things worth fixing for future iterations would be to give some feedback when enemies get hit, particularly when you hit them with their weakness (I assume the fire guys die easier to the ice attack, for example) since you went through the trouble of adding multiple attacks. Good work man!

GunAntrophist by RadonRaph 2019-05-20T19:43:05Z

Really enjoyed this one, simple yet there is something crazy satisfying with shooting people in the face with cold hard cash! If you plan on expanding it in the future perhapes make money spawn in different places so I dont camp my desk. Also an objective or things that force me to move would be cool. Don't pay with your life by Majadroid 2019-05-14T12:54:50Z

Overall great effort, loved the subtle details like the "This is so sad!" on the death button. I played the post jam version (web) and honestly thing you should change the key mapping since on the web version hitting control + anything can bring up search features, select all ect. I also felt I didnt have much of a window to dodge and would of been nice if enemies followed a movement pattern rather then move into me when I get close, like if they have their backs turrned I could sneak into them, since killing them is nothing but an obstacle I had no real insentive to risk health and use the cool sword upgrades. I also feel that to make health a currency, there should be some kind of choice in order to make it such.

These are all improvements for future versions however and frankly as a game for a Jam, its fantastic, well done!

I like the idea. As expected, there are some typos but this is acceptable in a jam. It’s a little hard to figure out how to recover energy at first (food recovers around 5 in the case of the burger and doughnut). Maybe some more quest indicators or some over arching goal would have helped it. Overall however good work, hope you iterate further or have learned from the experience!

LD46 — Keep it alive

Keep her alive, please.. by Sublustris 2020-04-22T10:39:03Z

Points with a purpose! I liked the idea of having points with a purpose for once in a game. The idea of having points give you extra energy/jumps is so simple yet brilliant since it makes you WANT to get points. The music and graphics are also very well done. Id say the jump is a little too short, requiering the need for jumping that is too precise. Its a minor gripe but one that can lead to a lot of frustrating deaths. Also, I would not allow the player to jump before the bricks actually go over the spikes. Having the the "click to jump" message right there invites the user to jump, only to be punished. Its an ok decision to teach how death works but spikes seem to only be an issue at the start, as the red blocks are a more pressing and constant concern. Overall, good work, minor complaints are just that, minor. Solid effort!

Hey @amkingtrp thanks for the review! The arms master (guy in the pic) tells you everything you need to know about how the game is played. Based on your feedback, we made the time intervals between each message shorter. We also fixed some of the clunkyness of the skill bar to make it clearer when you cast the skill.

First off, I really liked the direction this game took. I made a similar rts styled game in a previous ludum. So as someone who likes RTS and strategy games in general, this game made me smile since it strayed from the norm. I liked the overall premise of the game and the execution was done. However, polish is something this game really could of benefited from, particularly because of its genera. Little details become huge. For example, the players main game loop involves watching the situation and making a choice, the choice involves what upgrade to pick, how to invest his points. This is a fun game loop in its own right. However, since the player knows nothing about these upgrades, except their costs, his decision making is rendered less important. Should I save up for a bear or am I better served upgrading my boar? The combat not being visually explicative is and should be a minor point, especially considering this is a game jam and the genera. But if the only way I can get more info of my upgrades is observing the results, said issue becomes magnified. It’s a simple fix really; just an onhover message telling us the attack and health of each animal upgrade is enough. There are other minor issues such as Animal sometimes not caring about defending the nature stone and the wizard guy getting stuck, but again, the fact the path finding works as well as it does is a feat in its own right given the time and team size. I want to reiterate that the game loop was wonderfully done and have to congratulate you on being able to transmit that o so nice feeling of “ahhh my little kingdom is prospering!”, and in my view, that makes the game a success. The visual information elements are the only downside. When the tutorial is happening, be sure the player cant move the camera or advance the tutorial without following the guide. Also allowing the player to close the nature tree by clicking on the same nature tree button would be nice. Good work.
