It could be a promising game with the minimalistic pixel-art style and the 90's adventure game-vibe, but it's clearly lacking with content.

There's basically only two scenes to "explore", but you can't interact with your environment, nor can you make any choices in dialogue. Also the narrative side ends before it really gets a chance to start.

But still, given more time and effort it would be a different story!

(Also: I like the animation of Jen-Rah)

This reminds me of Dr. Faustus (Marlowe's version). There is a lot of potential here.

good story and pixelart!

bruh anyone who hangs up two photos of himself and nothing else in their house deserves to be tricked by jen-rah

Cool concept/story and use of theme, would have loved to see some more interactive gameplay and hear some original music. If you're ever in need of such a thing let me know.

@jjjjason Haha, the main reason for the paintings was to make the rooms look less empty, and I made them pictures of the character at different ages to show how he has aged over the short timespan.

@matu Thanks!

I liked the story :) Good job

Nice narrative game! I miss some interactions or choices... but I understand, in a Ludum we have short time. Well done! Keep making games! :fist:

atomfox0213 2019-05-21 18:01

@peterfonts Thanks! One funny thing with the dialogue is that is isn't actually text, but each line of text is actually a different image because I couldn't figure out how to use actual text in time

harksa 2019-05-21 18:58

It's not really a game but it was a nice "movie". I like it.

dreamingdice 2019-05-21 19:00

I really liked the story and the message, its simple (nothing is free/nothing comes cheap/ money cant buy you time ect) but relevant specially today. I will say, it needs some more choices and player interaction, its a great story and for a ludum its more than enough, but for the future, and for it to live up to the "game" part of narrative game, there should be ad least some way to lose. Regardless, its rare to see a clearly complete story in a ludum so well done, My lore is always missing a big chunk in ludums xD

Neat story, it would definitely work as the plot of a full game. Obviously not much gameplay at the moment, but I still enjoyed playing through it. Nice work.

pequenodev 2019-05-21 19:13

You have a narrative videogame estructure, maybe you would implement some mechanics or force player to decision making. It looks too simple for now, more like a visual novel than a classic interactive videogame. Anyway, great storytelling, the plot is well structured and you paid attention to some interesting details (I loved positioning the character right under his portrait and how scene blending looks). Nice job!

@dreamingdice Thanks! I had the idea of the story only a few hours after the theme was announced, but I couldn't figure out what kind of game I could use it in for a while. I tried a platformer at first, but I wasn't able to make anything decent, so near the end of the first day I decided to make a game similar to a game my brother made for a previous Ludum Dare called Paradise Inc. I did have an idea to make the ending a bit different, where you avoided projectiles, but it kept causing bugs and errors that I couldn't fix, and it also didn't really work with the story.

atomfox0213 2019-05-21 19:29

@pequenodev I actually did have an idea to make it more like a visual novel (I had the story planned out before I figured out what kind of game it would be, I explained more in a reply to someone else's comment) but I couldn't make any decent art for a game like that.

shunaky 2019-05-21 19:40

Cool art and good storytelling, congratulations ^^

corny 2019-05-21 19:49

All it needs is some sort of choice system and BOOM, you've got the new TellTale blockbuster!

In all seriousness though, my main gripe would be that the font was kinda hard to read. Well, that and the general lack of gameplay. Other people may enjoy storytelling-type games, but these things just aren't my cup of tea (that won't affect my rating though)

The graphics were nice though, as well as the story itself. Overall, a promising start but it just isn't my cup of tea.

Nice entry but too short I guess. Needed more to increase gametime. Keep it up pal !
