This was pretty rad, music is great and the gameplay is addictive. The hit sound effect gets annoying quickly though, small thing but something to think about for next time! :)

essence 2019-05-02 21:18

wow, this is probably the most fun game i have have played so far from this LD. It has a extremely groovy tune with well executed fun gameplay and a artstyle to fit it! Game is Absolutely Fantastic!

boudoubouda 2019-05-02 21:22

This game is addicting and the music is awesome. Keep it up man !

estuvomuybien 2019-05-02 21:26

Super addicting and challenging! Liked all the different hearts you shoot. Not sure what the ones that come down the side do. Screen resolution was wacky and I couldn't see the bottom part because it was behind the taskbar. Otherwise, really enjoyed it.

digitaldude555 2019-05-02 21:27

You executed this idea perfectly, every category was great, it was innovative, it fit the theme and the art/audio was really nice. One of my favorites so far.

kilian-baptendier 2019-05-02 21:31

Love the art, the sound is pretty satisfying and the theme is well-adapted. I don't know how Tetra works but you seems to know it pretty well.

gredgie 2019-05-02 21:33

I do like the gameplay despite its simplistic nature, finding yourself figuring out how many spaces along to quickly move to stop the rapidly descending hearts made the game a lot more fun.

knatt 2019-05-02 21:44

so fun! one of the best submissions I've seen this LD. wonderful submission!

One thing that got me was when the hearts where falling on the sides, I thought that I had to catch them, since my heart could be in that lane. but if no enemies that spawn in those lanes, then does the player need the option to go in there? Their might have been bonus points for catching a heart on the way down, but that wasn't clear to me.

craftlord 2019-05-04 10:46

Very well rounded little fun game!

puppetmaster 2019-05-04 19:01

@bentebent the hit sound has been annoying me since the beginning, will surely replace it in the post jam release, thank you for your comment

@essence Super that you liked it, I have some surprises planned for the post combo version :)

@boudoubouda thx, your game is great too

@estuvomuybien luckily I didn't leave the window height at 480px, thank you for your comment

@digitaldude555 great that you liked it, I also had fun with the implementation

@knatt you're absolutely right that the player can move on the orange tracks was a leftover. It was planned that the player would have to pick up the returning shots, but I dropped that because it think it is too annoying.

duke 2019-05-05 21:56

Really cool, well done! I really appreciate a good skill based fast shooter. The art is minimalistic but very well done. Cohesive and good looking. The color palette is well chosen. The music and sound effects are ok, nothing too special. This might be a missed opurtunity, because I think this could work really well as a kind of rhythm based music shooter. The whole grid already looks like a harp.

The controls were tight enough but I had some problems with shooting and moving in a short succession. the game often ate my movement action, right after I shot a heart, which was annoying because I was moving and shooting without looking at my heart. It was quite annoying to see, that the heart wasn't at the position I was expecting it to be. Also, would be nice if the heart could move with a pressed direction button. For example to move from one end of the stage to the other without hammering the direction key (basically like it works in tetris would be awesome, maybe just not that fast)

Just a minor setback, but I think a real pixel font would've looked nicer than the one you used :) My Highscore on my first round was 25102. Is there an end to get to?

puppetmaster 2019-05-05 22:16

@duke Your comment is super!!

With charged shot and move at the same time I always noticed that there was something wrong but could not narrow it down. I will revise the movement part for the post combo release and let your hints flow in and of course there is then also a suitable pixel font.

No, there is no end. After level 9 the pattern remains the same.

nandon 2019-05-05 22:29

Remarkably simple, fun, and addictive.

jjjjason 2019-05-06 01:50

Got 20252 my first game. The real strategy of the game definitely emerges once you get into it, as shooting in the order things come becomes a terrible idea. There were many times where I purposely waited before shooting just to see if there would be anything else coming so I could queue up some shots and then move to the other side of the screen. Great fun there.

I agree with Duke that the movement controls feel a little big sluggish, and I found my self mashing quite hard near the end. Also, the music is quite great, which is why it's a shame it's mixed rather quietly.

avsc 2019-05-06 02:10

This game needs a smaller resolution, the current one doesn't let me see the bottom of the screen so I can't see how many lives I have.

digitallimestone 2019-05-06 08:22

Awesome game! I had a lot of fun! The only reservation I had was that it got tiresome repeatedly mashing the arrow keys. Maybe something mapped to the scroll buttons on a mouse would be worth exploring?

Awesome submission!

invader 2019-05-06 14:49

simple and fun - good job! :)

firepit-games 2019-05-11 23:10

Cool game. It was pretty fun but I don't really see the theme in there. Art and music were good.

webox 2019-05-11 23:56

Beautiful!! It's super cool. I can totally see an android/ios version of this with leaderboards and stuff. Great Job!!

puppetmaster 2019-05-12 10:01

@firepit-games Thanks for your comment. I'm confused and also curious. What brings you to the opinion that you don't see the build in of the theme?

The player has only 10 lives. Each shot costs one life. Thus there is a maximum of 10 shots in the game. That's why you have to keep well with the number of lives so you can't shoot in the heat of battle.

Would be great if you could explain your opinion to me in more detail. If a gameplay feedback is missing or not so clear, I would like to improve it.

firepit-games 2019-05-12 13:15

@puppetmaster I just didn't really see the life as currency, that's all. I thought of it more like ammo because there is a direct relationship between how many hearts you have and how many shots you have. Maybe it would have been more related to the theme if you had implemented a shop like system where hearts and shots were separate things, but shots could be purchased in exchange for hearts. This would make your life more of a currency. I actually think the way you did it is quite elegant and well designed, and the addition of a shop might compromise the nice simplicity of the game. I think that it's very well done, but the theme implementation is a little foggy.

puppetmaster 2019-05-12 20:06

@firepit-games thank you for your in-depth explanation

I also had the idea with a shop, but rejected it during the development. In the back of my mind is the idea of a bomb (to buy). But then there would have to be the possibility to get life.

quadape 2019-05-12 21:26

Nice little game! I wish there was more effects, and pacing feels a little weird slow and fast moments alternate in weird patterns. Bot other than that - very nice!

jk5000 2019-05-14 19:08

This is a simple and fun little game. I love the music and graphics. The sound effects was okay, but they did not fit super well with the music. Overall a pretty great LD game. Well done.

paulo-brunassi 2019-05-14 20:23

Simple and well made! Lovely game and a great entry. Congrats!

vaclav-kucera 2019-05-14 20:28

Simple idea, but very fun to play :) The graphics are effective and everything seems well polished, I reckon you could release it as a mobile game.

ectucker1 2019-05-14 22:07

Love the music! This is a polished and simple game, I really enjoyed playing it. Got pretty intense once the green and blue hearts started showing up; added variety even to a basic concept. Nice work!

dan-thompson 2019-05-15 00:09

Very polished game on all fronts. I especially liked the graphical style and the color palette you chose. Made my hands sore trying to keep up by the end! I scored 22194. Would have liked to be able to hold left/right to move more than one row but I know I'm just nitpicking here. Great job!

foumart 2019-05-16 14:37

Awesome game, really liked the simplicity. Great mechanic with the charging and the option to catch your life back if you miss. The guide lines and the nine total positions were cool as I was able to not look at my "ship" at all and only watch for the upcoming "enemies": 2 times left, shot, 3 times right, charge, etc. Great entry!

spotted-metal 2019-05-16 22:29

This is an incredible entry. An amazingly solid game mechanic with a simple minimalistic art style!

jackson-makes-games 2019-05-18 22:43

Really excellent all around! The graphics are simple but still work (as well as the color scheme), the soudn effects are really nice, and the music sets a great mood. It's also super intuitive, which is more than I can say for a lot of these entries :face_palm:. Great job!

balance686 2019-05-18 23:49

I had a lot of fun playing this! Simple game with an excellent execution. I like the aesthetic and the audio was enjoyable as well. You made great use of the theme and the difficulty pacing is great. Excellent job! [edit] Side question: How do you like working with Affinity Designer? I've been eyeing it up lately. [/edit]

dreamingdice 2019-05-19 09:12

shootInTheHeart.png

Really liked this one! Music and ambience is fantastic! This is an example of a good Ludum game: Simple and addictive. Small things like the screen default site were nice touches and the music fits great. The escalation of difficulty is just right and its one of the things that is the hardest to get right, well done! If you plan to continue it, perhaps some more variety like power ups and different screen formats (more lanes maybe go crazy and make them horizontal) would be nice!

puppetmaster 2019-05-19 22:10

@balance686 I have worked with Inkscape for a long time but the complicated and nested gui has always bothered me. I've been with Affinity Designer since the Windows beta, which has excited me from the beginning is how easy it is to snapping and positioning the individual elements. But I would still call myself a beginner.

puppetmaster 2019-05-19 22:17

@dreamingdice I struggle with dynamically creating/adjusting the appropriate resolutions for almost every one of my games. I need to take some time to study the concept. Which isn't very helpful either, as I don't like full-screen games very much.

Thanks for the extra gameplay tips

sebity 2019-05-19 22:24

I absolutely loved this game. It is a simple game but highly addictive, very playable and fun. The sound effects are cute, the music was fantastic and the graphical style was great. Well done!

gamefive 2019-05-19 22:41

nice game

aileron 2019-05-19 23:31

Awesome, the music and art made it for me. Come to think of it, the mechanics too. And I see you like tiny viewports for your games as well. I'd say the only thing that could be missing is a meta-game (who had time for that?). That and some post-jam polish and I wouldn't even be able to tell it was made in 72 hours!

secretpocketcat 2019-05-21 04:59

What a lovely entry that's executed really well with great track to back it up. The core design is really awesome - I love how missing doesn't cost you HP but you have to wait for it to return - that's just so ellegant yet doesn't feel harsh.

Minor points: - ~~I couldn't tell what triggers the fast shots~~ - I'm a dummy - I missed you can charge shots - some visual indicator showing the current charge would be nice - the game could start off a bit faster - if it was made in so little time and all by yourself, why isn't it a compo entry?

My final score was 54064.
