Always wanted to play as Cthulhu

anchry 2025-04-08 08:19

Very solid entry, game has a really nice vibe to it and it combines my two favorite interests, fish and occultism!

jachymthegoat 2025-04-08 08:21

The visuals are really good, very solid game, good work!

oscar-boix 2025-04-08 08:22

Delicious dolphins :P I liked the idea

elq 2025-04-08 08:25

Good job  Would have wanted some difficulty, it was very easy to dodge all the hazards.

leumas 2025-04-08 09:12

Great! Awesome entry, i really like the vibe and mood. Interesting gameplay. Would love to play some post-jam full version with more gameplay, maybe some more locations, ability to eat bigger fish etc.

shamedoor 2025-04-08 11:41

It was super interesting! I can imagine how quickly this could escalate into a full game haha. I would consider making some non-eatable enemies become eatable after you have grown big enough. Also, a pressure mechanic could be interesting (perhaps something where the white fill of the figure gradually decreases over time if it hasn't been fed after X seconds). This could add a challenging pressure element through a loss condition.

buckmeister 2025-04-08 18:01

The premise is really nice. Graphics, though simple, paired with music really set the mood! I had fun playing it, good job!

erosrolf 2025-04-08 18:07

short but cool, really liked the vibe, cool sound! Cthulhu has awakened

tois 2025-04-08 18:08

Felt very polished, no glitches, easy to get into and clear visuals

aashen 2025-04-08 19:52

Me and the boys when we are playing as a horrors beyond human comprehension:

Amazing game, pretty addictive

dinosaur065 2025-04-09 00:06

really loved the idea on this, very good innovation. the graphics for the tongue were cool too, how did you do that animation?

also i agree with the previous comment that said that the player needs more pressure to eat fast, i think that would add an interesting aspect to the gameloop

scoobysnacks 2025-04-09 06:38

@dinosaur065 i made the tongue animation using a godot Line2D scripting points positions with wave, pulse, and jitter effects.

scoobysnacks 2025-04-09 06:40

@dinosaur065 @elq @shamedoor I was afraid to make it too hard and players will not finish it. but i guess i made it too easy)

okuso 2025-04-09 12:59

Amazing entry! The mood was perfect and the gameplay was really intuetive. I was a bit disapointed from the end, but it`s a bit too much to expect an animation of a giant monster rising from the ocean floor :P Great work!

0x-void-x0 2025-04-09 12:59

I love a good jam game that doesn't take too much time and is plain fun. The idea is simple but the gameplay is engaging, I enjoyed the graphics as well. Awesome job!

I can see this being developed further in the future.

freamdev 2025-04-09 13:46

Gotta love anything that reminds me of the old ones. Nice entry excellent mood lightning. :octopus:

noagard 2025-04-09 14:23

I didn't expect to play for the language XD 🐟🐟🐟 I love the idea!

jacob-kreiner 2025-04-09 15:18

Awesome entry! I always enjoy these types of eat and grow games. One thing I would appreciate is the ability to retract partially. That way you could grab things that are dangerously close to obstacles without having to go all the way back to the bottom. Would maybe need to add a counter mechanic to balance that feature though so people don't just spam space bar to hover. Very cool concept though. Keep up the good work!

papaye-dodue 2025-04-09 15:53

Cool concept but maybe a bit short. I thought something more was going to happen at the end, but overall I enjoyed it a lot !

vladimir-ins 2025-04-09 16:18

Very unique machanics

tyhal 2025-04-09 18:09

Chill game, like the mood, would be cool continuing to go further out of the ocean because picking up the ship into the air was funny, the graphics do a lot by fitting into the theme but also being simple :)

maskrosen 2025-04-09 18:20

Quite unique game, I liked it. An nice take on the theme as well to start at the depth and move up from it. The gameplay was nice and chill and the music, art and sound effects set the mood to match. Great job!

qhboiboi 2025-04-09 18:50

a game where i get to play as an ancient beast? sign me up. extremely fun premise

d-demetori 2025-04-09 19:54

Cool idea! loved it

deadcode 2025-04-09 19:58

I got super immersed in this game! The graphics are beautiful and the relaxing music with the sound effects are amazing! Very cool idea and as other said it was super fun to roleplay an ancient beast haha:D. Great work!

sn4pi 2025-04-09 19:58

Really fun to play and the music was good at setting up the atmosphere! First thing I'd improve is the difficulty e.g. that you have to really think about contracting back to your base because it might cost some of the collected food sources etc.

Good entry!

houmgaor 2025-04-09 20:13

I find the core game idea really good, and the graphics are well executed. You feel in the depth, things are just enough to set the atmosphere. I must say the choice of music was excellent for this game, it is very calm and menacing at the same time.

nsadie 2025-04-09 20:13

Great job with the tentacle! Gameplay was simple but fun, with a good push your luck idea.

cure 2025-04-09 21:55

Was a tiny bit sad nothing happened after the eye popped up, but it was fun!

alec 2025-04-10 00:07

Finally getting that boat felt really good! Plus I really like the music, sets the mood so well.

gamurmakesgems 2025-04-10 01:12

I like the idea of the game and the elements are well put. Gameplay is short though.

mateu 2025-04-10 03:21

I clicked on this game because I thought the cover art looked cool, and I was definitely not disappointed! You started with a pretty creative premise and made it a really fun little experience. The visuals and audio were great and I think you really did a nice job with the mood. The gameplay is a little bit lacking, but it doesn't detract from the experience at all, and I still had a great time playing. Great job!

grimwitch 2025-04-10 06:02

What a great little game, great use of the limited colour palette to portray what is dangerous.

holiwhirl 2025-04-10 07:50

really cool take on the theme! music was giving chill vibes to devour everything in the ocean to

enmarimo 2025-04-10 13:23

Very nice idea, instead of going into the depth you come from it. It was fun!

mikhail-shchapov 2025-04-10 14:06

Nice short chill game, reminds me of a hungry shark game

verbante 2025-04-10 15:24

It was a cool experience

ljg 2025-04-10 19:22

Nice game! really liked the tongue effects, and the art was very consistent. Good job making it clear what fish are evil! Very polished, well done.

petitcoke 2025-04-10 20:09

I really like the visuals of this game, well done!

thesmellofoxygen 2025-04-10 20:16

Short and sweet. Despite being brief, it was pretty fun. The tongue getting larger was nice, and there was enough audio feedback to feel engaged on that front as well. Wish we got a victory animation besides just the eye, but I know how jams go!

protzz 2025-04-10 23:31

Love the art, well done!

hnkxobka 2025-04-10 23:35

Cool minimalistic art, liked the idea and also the visual cues like red = danger

keith-wang 2025-04-11 11:13

Cool art and concept, really suit the theme of Depth.

wyzal 2025-04-11 12:40

Cool art and gameplay is interestingly integrated into the theme. Great concept, good job!

kuboi 2025-04-11 13:26

Very cool idea, I liked the simple art and music as well, very chill game. A bit too easy imo and the ending could be more of a reward than just the eye opening but overall a very cool entry!

jack-turpitt 2025-04-11 13:44

This is a really cool take on the theme! I especially loved how tactile a lot of the feedback was, fish sticking to you, your tongue (tentacle? finger?) growing larger, the fish sticking to you, etc. I also like how the tension builds slowly as you move your way from fish up the food chain to the boat. Really cool entry! Thanks for making it :)

kamuniaft 2025-04-11 13:46

Cool concept! Nice to be a giant underwater devourer :D I was a bit mislead by that spikes mechanic - wasn't obvious you can actually ignore them after you passed them with the end of the tongue. Dragged that ship to the bottom with pleasure, wish there were more of those xD Good job!

kristijan 2025-04-11 16:45

Screenshot from 2025-04-11 18-44-17.png

I love the atmosphere—calm and spooky at the same time! The game’s simple and intuitive, no need for a tutorial. A high score system would be a great addition. Great work!

karamelika22 2025-04-11 17:50

The game is simple and addictive, the atmosphere, music and design(the ending especially)are great.I liked the idea and its implementation. Good job.

milestone-games 2025-04-11 21:31

I enjoyed this one! Like others mentioned, playing as the villain was a nice twist. I found I could go out of bounds and avoid all the spikes by just moving the tongue all the way to the right, offscreen. Fun game!

drsmey 2025-04-11 21:32

Good game! I wish the tongue would be a bit faster at the start when you already cleared out a lot of the bottom fish, but that's pretty much my only gripe. Short, very simple, very fun for what it is and a perfect fit for the theme.

jacky-san 2025-04-11 23:33

Good job !

thomas-higgins 2025-04-12 01:22

I love this, so simple yet fun, such a good use of the theme and reversal of playing as the fishy god of the sea - 10/10 would crave sushi after roleplaying as Cuthulu again

7uc4s 2025-04-12 15:03

well done, a bit short, but enjoyed it :ok_hand:

oduvan 2025-04-12 16:06

Had a blast playing this! The concept is simple but super effective — I love how it slowly builds tension as you grow. The controls felt smooth, and the sound design really nailed the atmosphere. Would be awesome if later stages had some kind of evolving threat or time pressure — like, maybe the ocean "rejects" you if you don’t feed fast enough? 😄 Either way, super fun and really polished for a jam game. Great job!

wuppos 2025-04-12 20:27

This was a very fun game! I liked the twist that you are the monster in the depths, instead of playing as someone who is scared of the depths. Slowly being able to reach further and further was very satisfying, and learning the movement patterns of the dolphins was cool as well. The music and sound effects also fit the mood perfectly. I am not sure what the eye at the end meant though :)

Anyway, really well done! I had a lot of fun with this one :D

captandrey 2025-04-12 22:29

Wow, that was awesome! Simple controls, but surprisingly engaging to play. The level design was great — starting with small fish and building up to aggressive sharks (and that ship!). Really solid idea and fantastic execution!

adamsmccall 2025-04-13 02:46

Simple concept but very well executed. I like how intuitive it was as well, you instantly know how to play and what to avoid, gg :)

dxk2294 2025-04-13 05:09

That ship never stood a chance  Nice job!

byebye 2025-04-13 08:57

I liked the idea and the atmosphere. The only thing I wish was that the game was longer :)

binaryprinciple 2025-04-13 14:01

One strong mechanic with a very moody environment. I liked it! It remind me of the old atari fishing game: Fishing Derby. I would recommend adding some shaking on the fish on the way down.

borabee 2025-04-13 16:23

Pretty innovative take on the theme, I haven't seen others like it. Plus the art and audio really help set the mood. Only nitpick is that for a long time I though I couldn't touch the spikes from the sides even when retracting the tongue, which wasted me a lot of tme, so maybe their visuals could be adapted to better indicate that or touching them could be made inevitable sooner so the player has to learn this right at the beginning!

jver422 2025-04-13 18:13

cute game, good scope for a jam. didn't run into any technical issues. well done!

someone 2025-04-13 19:53

Simple but effective mechanics. I really love the art style. Great job.

mahc 2025-04-13 21:05

cool concept I've not seen before

mr-mesmer 2025-04-13 21:30

cool game.

haoro 2025-04-13 23:09

Good game, interesting way to represent the theme ! Good job 😁

flinge 2025-04-13 23:12

Great vibe, interesting concept, and really pleasant music — overall, I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely a strong candidate.

Here are a few things I noticed while playing: I wish there was a bit of in-game guidance or a short tutorial. Also, I feel like mouse controls could actually work really well here. At first, I thought the sharks could be eaten — they glow red, sure, but I figured if I got big enough, it wouldn't be a problem.

I also felt like it was missing some sense of progression — maybe there's a way to make it endless, or give it a longer arc? It kind of reminded me of *Tasty Planet*, where you start small and grow by eating everything around you.

Anyway, I ended up playing it twice!

platonenko 2025-04-14 01:08

good project for jam, interesting concept!

bad-fetus 2025-04-14 01:31

Cool concept! It was short, sweet and worked well. I was not expecting to "one-shot" the ship and was amused that it was basically just another fish to our Lovecraftian monster. As others above said, I'd love to play a longer and more difficult version, whatever that might look like. In any case, great work!

paulhocker 2025-04-14 02:49

this game is the reason i love ludum dare -- where else can you play a game where the objective is to eat a ship --great entry

seiko 2025-04-14 17:20

awesome and fun game! I liked the monochromatic palette, artstyle and clear gameplay. Hit the theme :100: percent

mamboman 2025-04-14 20:29

I love eating those dolphins :D :p

andruid 2025-04-14 22:17

Loved the mood of your game! Right on theme and nice graphics too! I didn't find it difficult at all though, so if you plan on tweaking or developing further, that would be my suggestion.|

Just a heads up, there's a "left stick" to the move right instruction:

"Move Right: D or → or left stick"

Congrats on your submission!

ammonit 2025-04-15 12:39

Those curves are gorgeous! The tentacle rising animation is amazing! Great idea and awesome execution!

xparker 2025-04-15 17:25

Very moody game. All hail Cthulhu!

xpoho 2025-04-16 06:27

Да, тентакли - это мы любим ^_^

Мне игра очень понравилось, простая, но достаточно художественная.

atsh 2025-04-16 15:42

What a fun little game, with nice graphics made of mainly black sprites. It took me sometime to figure out you can eat several fish, and then I felt really powerful

Maybe it's just me, but while I did like the tentacle a lot, I do have 2 criticisms * The tail end looks a little weird. I think a simple rounded tail would look better (although I understand you wanted to get something dynamic, it's hard look to get right) * The speed of the tentacle bothered me a bit - when there are no fish down, it move painfully slowly, and when I lifted my finger from W for a second without a fish it was already down. I would consider speeding up the tentacle a bit (maybe based on the amount of fish at the bottom, or give player some control), and maybe not get all the way down if you don't have fish, or make it based on the number of fish you catch

Still, I really enjoyed the game for it's simplicity and presentation - good job!

ryano 2025-04-20 05:07

Fun game, atmosphere was great. Interesting mechanic, maybe just needed a little more difficulty to add some replay value. Good job!

whalejam 2025-04-21 13:45

nice little game, I like that you can nab a bunch of fish in one go and get a big stack to eat at once! The graphics are simple but cute and its really easy to understand to avoid the spikes and sharks. Its a little annoying to let go of W and immediately return to the bottom, would be nicer if that was a different button or at least let you pause for a second, but I get thats part of the skill that you cant stop going up and just have to grab what you can on the way. Overall nice job ^^

lllarso 2025-04-22 14:24

Fun little game. I think the length of the level was perfect. There was just one UI element, but this was a nice choice.

Having more visual and sound impact when getting the fish and dolphins would make the game even more satisfying.

The mood is pretty good. The visuals were simple, but effective. The colour red showed you immediately what you shouldn't touch. It's funny, that you can take the ship at the end. :)

thelastslowpoke 2025-04-22 14:56

Hahah, nice!

I love how you learn through playing (for example, on the first few hunts I didn't realize you could get more than one prey at the time, but I quickly asked that question and found the answer myself). I like how it's not too long, it's just right. You nailed the atmosphere too.

inavtr 2025-04-23 12:06

A really nice and calm game. Thank you!

devour.png

momotiktik 2025-04-24 07:49

Aaah, finally I don't have to be afraid of anyone, it's me who others should be afraid of! Honestly, although it's a small and simple game, I liked it and I love finally getting some agency. It's a shame we cannot eat EVERYTHING at the final stage, but oh well :D good job!

vityusha 2025-04-25 04:38

The game is great ! I liked the process of cathing different fish to grow. Its also cool that as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger creatures. You even can eat the full ship in the end ! The music is nice but it has stopped for me in one moment. So i think it would be better to make it loopable. The art is great and pretty polished. Generally, cool game !

lespaul59 2025-04-25 09:07

Cool game, i understood nearly to the end that i can have multiple fishes as snack xD i think i was to slow because suddenly the soundtrack ended. nice entry!

roroto-sic 2025-04-25 12:47

The awakening !!! Great game! I really like the atmosphere! And moving the tongue is nice and feels good to play ! Maybe it Lack a bit of screaming sailors when the boat sink, but even without i had a lot fun playing it ! :) [ As you like that thematic, if you want more, I also made a game with a hungry ancient :) ]

Sans titre.png

alchemic 2025-04-25 23:53

Great game! Love the vibes. A bit easy, kinda wish there was more progression. Graphics are great, the change in lighting as you ascend is very nice.

When I got to the end, the camera didn't move far enough down for me to see the eye, but the screenshots here made up for it.
