LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Radiation by KunoNoOni 2017-12-06T01:30:25Z

I like the concept of doing radiation with the theme of LD40. I think I have some -hopefully- helpful pieces of feedback for you about your game. - The text is really hard to read in the Instructions. I think the neon green on top of yellow background is causing that problem. - The instructions is a huge screen of text. You went into a lot of detail about 1x 2x 3x fuel and radiation but I think most players would have figured that out anyway from the little output text you give after each roll. - I'm not really sure how your game fits as You vs. Computer. Is the Computer supposed to be another Person on this wasteland? I think with some more thought here, the opponent could be described as something that is part of the story of your game. - Mechanically, I really enjoy some of these dice rolling games! The implementation of your mechanics seems to fit well with the theme.

Best of luck in future LD's!

Moubal by headchant 2017-12-05T19:44:36Z

Very well done game. It was a lot of fun to get as many blocks accross the finish. At first, I was trying to keep all the blocks on the platform, but by the 4th level it became really difficult to do so. It was fun to try to launch the blocks in the air and then throw them at the finish line by hitting them :p.

Snowmans Dilemma by JCMonkey 2017-12-05T23:21:54Z

I'm happy to see a godot submission in this ludum dare :). I think it plays and looks very nice and polished. It does exactly what you'd expect it play like. I'd like to see some other types of enemies maybe to create some more interesting puzzles.

Relyk by ThePelranthean 2017-12-06T04:13:39Z

As with other commenters, the models you use are fun and enjoyable! Unfortunately I don't feel like it ends up being much of a "Game" since as a player, there are few times when my choices seem to matter much. Maybe try to scope down the project a bit more so the core mechanic of the game is solid for your next LD.

Bat Dose by Serval Games 2017-12-05T19:06:58Z

It looks like you've got a great working game with a unique setting and art style! I thought it was kind of funny how I was bigger than the snakes but couldn't eat them :p. I do agree with the commented above about how the game didn't feel like it got worse as you got bigger. The only thing that got was worse avoiding the big bats. It would have been interesting to see if your size affected more things than just your hit box. Great job though!

EARTH BLOSSOM by Zarkonnen 2017-12-04T19:09:21Z

This game is a lot of fun! The sound effects are just lovely :).

Steam Paralysis by Nammflow 2017-12-04T06:06:31Z

@tay and @nick-luciani, thanks for letting me know! I fixed the itch.io upload so it should be the whole zip folder.

Let me know if it works now! Thanks!

Steam Paralysis by Nammflow 2017-12-04T06:27:19Z

Okay guys, thanks for the help. Found out the issue w/ the pick-up of games saying that you won :). I am now about 80% certain that it will run for you both!

Steam Paralysis by Nammflow 2017-12-05T17:30:18Z

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm glad people are enjoying my life simulator :p

Steam Paralysis by Nammflow 2017-12-07T01:19:20Z

@meanmon13, @alottabit, @jani-nykanen, @chem0pren, there's never a steam sale that goes by without an unplayed game that was purchased.

@jfraser314, thanks for the feedback. The idea is that you can grab anything at any time, but steam sales make games cheaper, and you will eventually run out of money if you dont get jobs, and you will eventually become "Paralyzed" if you have too many games unplayed. So it's a balancing act of collecting the right things at the right time and avoiding specific things when you need to.

Of Fates and Feels by bwalter 2017-12-04T05:31:59Z

I just love the art style for this game! Very neat! The theme, music, and art all fit well together to give an excellent atmosphere with the dungeon crawl style gameplay.

Substance by niborious 2017-12-04T05:49:39Z

This game was a lot of fun to play around with! I could definitely see myself spending hours playing this game. It's that mixture of rogue-like and bullet-hell that makes this game work really well!

Slightly annoying traffic by JOrbits 2017-12-07T00:32:11Z

Simple, frustrating, but also a buttload of fun! I look forward to seeing this in mobile format in the future :)

Lights, Camera, Action! by gamesplusjames 2017-12-07T01:50:07Z

Your game works really well!

**Pros** - I really like the art style. I like the swinging limbs and how the character looks when attacking - Obviously there's some great thought put into the humor of the game, although idk why he can't have a beard! - The mechanics all work pretty well and its kind of fun to just keep playing even if it's easy.

**Cons** - I get what you say about the higher rating thing being a bad thing and thats how you tie in the theme. I'm not quite sure how all that fits into the gameplay? - Is the knife just a 1 shot kill? Seems a bit too easy when I have that equipped. - Is the timer supposed to work? Mine just looked like it was stuck @ 3:09 or something. Maybe I bugged it out somehow? - I think a little bit more feedback on attacks would be helpful. I think part of this ties into the knife being a 1 shot kill though. I'd just love to see a bit more care taken into the moment you attack and hit something. Maybe a knockback or something when you hit?

I hope these comments are helpful, I think you've done a great job for this LD!

Identity by Kataware 2017-12-06T02:31:24Z

This looks like a lot to attempt for a Ludum Dare! I love the idea of multiple personalities as "The more you have it, the worse it is." I also enjoyed the different abilities for your personalities. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get past the Starter World as it kept popping me out into the world map.

It would be interesting to see how you build upon your idea here. I could see this as the start of a Smite type game. Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future!

72CoCSD by Togis 2017-12-06T01:49:52Z

Man this is really clever! here are some particular things I like about your game: - Very INTERESTING game system. It's an interesting commentary about chat support systems and fits really well with the theme of this LD. - In it's own quirky and wierd way, its hilarious. All the sound effects, windows login sound, blue screen of death, pop up windows that will come up while you're mid-sentence. - Everything looks and fits very accurately with Windows XP simulation!

I'd love to see what more can be made out of this, I see your list of future items for thsi game and will look forward to come back and seeing what you add!

Tendril by NykolaR 2017-12-06T04:08:23Z

This is a really cool and unique concept for this Ludum Dare. I agree with @cxsquared above that this game provides a zen-like experience. After playing it a few times I figured out what the goal was and found it to be pretty easy to keep playing. I do think the zooming in/out on the main menu is a little disorienting. I also think one of the nodes(5th node i think) spawned outside the screen zone even when i zoomed out. It would be interesting to see what could be added next to a game like this.

Gluttony Simulator by BelowParallel_Ian 2017-12-04T05:38:54Z

I couldn't have enough Tacos. I mean really, who can resist tacos!? I got so big I couldn't even up onto the 2nd highest platform anymore :(.

bildup by flome 2017-12-05T05:51:11Z

It's a fun little space shooter game! Would love to see some more mechanics added, but this is a great start! It's fun to challenge myself a bit with games like this and let lots of enemies surround me and try to take them all out :p

A Game About Cats by SlimothyJ 2017-12-04T21:40:43Z

I got to about day 24 before my first cat died, but it was definitely tough to keep it going so long! I felt like I was being randomly given money to buy items, but i'm not sure it was entirely clear how to get money. Sometimes I was worried I wouldn't enough money to feed my cats!

Cat Herder by Nick Luciani 2017-12-04T18:16:22Z

Haha, I was waiting for a too-many-cats type game. I just love this interpretation! As expected, CatHerder is frustratingly difficult! I love that even after you put so many cats in the pen, they will still jump out, just to piss you off even more :p

Sunken by Tay 2017-12-04T17:54:16Z

Wow this is a great submission! You've got great mechanics working with enemies, chests, and coins. I think I'd love to see the enemies move on their instead of standing still. I got up to 900 or so coins by mostly avoiding enemies and collecting chests :). I did find it particularly funny when an enemy was trapped in a corner with mountains surrounding them :p

Zombie's Revenge by Jake Cope 2017-12-04T18:24:40Z

I like the idea you implemented here. The music sounds fantastic and I can almost create a beat w/ the weapon firing on top of the music! I would love to see the colors stand out just a bit more. The brown character on top of brown background makes it a little tricky for me to see everything since everything looks so small. As with others, I agree that the difficulty ramps up a lot on level 4 and can't get past 5 or 6 often.

Avenging Patricia Dare by pst723 2017-12-05T22:14:20Z

You've really nailed the art, scene, and character design on this game! I think it all fits well together with the music. I do find it a bit frustrating that the gun shooting people wreck me and keep hiding behind the melee enemies.

All Followers Lost by Tim Ruswick 2017-12-05T19:23:25Z

This was a lot of fun! I see what you're getting at with the theme and I like it! I wonder what the calculation is for enemies to spawn bullets because at some point in time i had like 40+ friends and i just kept circling the large group of enemies picking them off slowly. Either way, I think this is a very well polished game for this Ludum Dare and will definitely come back to play some more!

Junk by jjjjason 2017-12-07T01:34:17Z

Hey I really enjoy the concept of this game and how the game has permanence with other players. I think its a fun idea that you've implemented really well! I think I can understand the issues that @cerno-b brings up about the crap people put down on purpose, but at the same time, isn't part of the games' appeal to the theme that you can't control how bad other people might act or the kind of mess they leave you?

I also agree with @niterich about the up button. It takes me a long time to get used to not flipping with up and several times I ruined a tetris by pressing up when i meant to press z or x :(. Despite that, I really enjoyed this game and your implementation of this concept! I'd love to see if there is a high score kept somewhere!

99 Bottles by Technomancy Studios 2017-12-06T03:21:06Z

Hello gang. - Love how you're using the theme in a unique and interesting way. - The inversion really pisses me off. But I guess that does simulate being drunk in real life :p - Was I somehow supposed to hit that target at the end? I could never get the bottles thrown far enough with the inversion on. - The music, sound effects, and art style all blend well in your game, plus it was just a lot of fun!

Captain Capsize by Lance Krasniqi 2017-12-06T00:19:04Z

This is a very nicely polished game for a game jam. I think you've executed your vision well and am glad you were able to add some humor to your theme w/ your descriptions, music, and goal of getting to the pub!

Get in Shape by Prostone 2017-12-07T01:15:26Z

This is a cool take on the theme! I'm using a macbook and it works really well (One of few games working on mac, so extra props!). I love the colors, the music, and the fact that I can "Ramp up" the difficulty simply by playing the game. I love when games auto-adjust the difficulty as you play! Good job on this submission!

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-07T00:55:41Z

Screen Shot 2017-12-06 at 5.52.30 PM.png

Couldn't quite figure out what the best strategy is to earn more points. It was unclear by playing he game how coins and time ended up affecting the score in the end. I know that both increase score, but I love to get high scores so would like to figure out how to optimize!

Other notes: I like the music, although since it is a short sound clip, it does get reptitive quickly. I do like how this game is a nice little breeze to play. It's low stress and sometimes mesmerizing to just sit and play for a bit. Nice work!

Tetripitalism by chadrbanks 2017-12-05T05:30:56Z

Ah, Tetris and capitalism! I love this interpretation of the theme, especially since you include a subtle dig at capitalism. Not gonna lie, I laughed at first when I saw that you had to pay to flip and move your blocks :p. You've got a great Tetris game working here. Unfortunately its hard for me to resist simply playing Tetris normally haha.

2030: Trump's America by tywiggs 2017-12-05T05:04:10Z

I figured out the helicopter thing on my second run through the game, but yeah it's a little bit unclear what the goal is in this game. I like the lazerbeam mechanic you have in here, it feels pretty solid. Truthfully, I also was sold on the poster, and that got me to click here :).

- - - by Mark Kennedy 2017-12-04T18:47:46Z

This was fun to explore and see how you went through development hell :). I love that you took your frustration about restarting and made it into a fun little experience for us to enjoy.

Friends.OS by Rob White 2017-12-07T00:41:08Z

This is a wonderfully executed game with the theme. I have seen a few different uses of social media in LD40, but I think this is probably the most fun and funniest to play so far! I particularly like how grim and depressing the whole scene looks. You've put a lot of thought into how the user should feel empty when playing the game.

Clean this mess ! by Diblow 2017-12-05T22:35:19Z

Haha what a fun game! You've taken great care at executing this game design. I'd love to see an improved version of this game in the future!

Also, it's always fun to throw tables, but now I know how not-fun it is to put them back...

Do You Mind If My Buddy Joins the Band? by Brandon Anderson 2017-12-06T03:34:46Z

@brandon-anderson You've done a fantastic job on this compo submission! The incorporation of your own guitar riffs is just awesome! I'd love to see a bit more interesting of a mechanic besides timing your button press at the end of a character playing their riff. I actually first thought this was going to be some kind of memorization game where you have to remember the riff everyone plays and then type their first letter when they play their riff.

Do you plan to continue to work on this and improve it? I would love to play an updated version in the future with more riffs :p.

P.S. Love the random names that you pull from the census!

Shinigami by Mojken 2017-12-07T04:49:41Z

Hello there. Congrats on finishing your game! I think you've got the beginning of a real fundamental hack n slack top down game! It looks to me like you've focused on too many different things perhaps, and ended up with a few broken pieces like the AI being a little wonky. I also found that my character just auto-moved to the right side of the screen at one point. I really do like the scythe animation! I think it looks nice and smooth. Best of luck in the future!

Smack`Em! by mess110 2017-12-07T00:31:08Z

One of the cool things about doing a classic idea like whack-a-mole is that you get to emphasize the things you love to work on during a project. In this case, it's clear that you've put a lot of effort into making it an attractive-looking game with clever sounds effects and a great sounding guitar track! What i'd love to have seen improved w/ this iteration is the size and color of the text for the score. It took me a little bit to figure out if the game even did keep rack of score since it is hard to see the tiny text in the top left corner.

Also, I was playing this on a laptop and am kind of surprised i was able to get 30+ points on a touch pad :p.

Mo' Gold, Mo' Dragons by tvance 2017-12-07T01:05:45Z

I agree with the post above, arrow key movement is rough when its on a page that will scroll. That said, I just used the alterantive WASD movement since i'm on a regular QWERTY keyboard. I think movement of both the player and dragons is really smooth, and I like how the AI for the dragons work! It's always more fun when they actually look like they're doing their own thing than just following around the player all the time.

I also would love to see a post-gamejam version of this game with co-op like suggested above. I think it would be a lot of fun to do this in 2-player mode or even against a player-controlled dragon.

Herding Cats: The 400th South Winchester Jr. Semi-Finals with Fiona Pennywhistle by Cercle 2017-12-05T05:44:06Z

You've put together an excellent game for this game jam! I love all the voice commentary you provide between the levels. It really adds that extra level of polish. I also am a fan of the hand-drawn cartoon look you have for your game. Great game!

Droplet by ManBeardGames 2017-12-05T06:06:56Z

This is a fun easy-going game. I used to be a huge fan of old flash aquarium games and this really hits the spot there. The piano tune you are using just sets the perfect mood. It is sad but also re-assuring that there's always someone bigger in the food chain.

Slithering Secrets by meanmon13 2017-12-06T00:33:10Z

You've really set the ambience and atmosphere for your game well. The music, sound effects and mechanics seem to fit and create something very nice. I also had trouble navigating the environment, which is kind of the point as I understand. It would be cool to know how far along I am so I know when the level would have finished. It took me a total of 10 minutes to find all the symbols. Nice job!

Shoot - Keep Your Score Down. by GoldenHart 2017-12-04T17:45:34Z

It looks like you've implemented your goals well with this game! It kind of feels like a soccer goal defense game in a way, they either move to the left or right. I will say that it ends up being a bit too easy to stop all of them since their speed doesn't seem to vary by much. Either way, well executed!

Bloody Pop-ups! by CSdoesCS 2017-12-06T03:58:44Z

So many popups infuriates me, which means a success for you! Very funny and precise use of the theme. I would love to have seen a fake blue screen of death too, since I remember those from the old days of popups :p

Get to the CHOPPA! by Girts Kesteris 2017-12-05T18:56:55Z

Haha this game was hilarious! Very well done, and as many have commented, the Arnold voice-over was just fantastic :)

UF-Ohh by SammyB 2017-12-05T05:13:49Z

Fun little puzzle game. I think the random teleportation makes it a bit too easy to solve some of the levels. Is that intended? Level 3 seems impossible without, but I could just be bad at puzzle games ><

Jungle Raider by Torak Whiteleopard 2017-12-04T22:12:57Z

Yay, a pygame game! I'm learning to make games in pygame and I really enjoyed what you have created here. I think the art style is great and the levels you created have a lot of thought and effort put behind them. Nice work!

Catlady by oson 2017-12-05T19:32:23Z

Current build works for me.

For the game itself, I was a little bit confused at first as to what I was supposed to be doing. I'm not entirely sure what I am hiding in when i press spacebar next to the spike things. I also don't really know what the cats are supposed to be doing (I lose on the 4th day, but not sure why). I hope some of that feedback is helpful. I do like your self-recorded cat noises though :)
