LD44 — Your life is currency

Pulsation by stevenjmiller 2019-04-30T05:18:42Z

Super cool concept, albeit a bit difficult to learn. I really like the idea of creating puzzles around manipulating the environment. My biggest criticism is that there were levels where it felt like even though there were 2, maybe 3 parts, the all the first steps were trivial, but the last one was a brain-buster (suuuuper thankful you put in a skip level button). At times it got super frustrating because the game doesn't really give that much feedback to the player on what they're impacting and how. Regardless, it's a beautiful concept with great art and despite my periodic frustrations, I enjoyed it, well done!

Tree of Life by wolar 2019-05-03T23:12:09Z

Wow! This was super fun! Really cute graphics and sound effects and an overall great atmosphere - very relaxing and casual. My biggest criticisms are that the camera controls are a little wonky, it would've felt more natural to be able to move with the mouse (click and drag) and that there wasn't much differentiation between the towers (it was hard to tell what I had placed and what areas needed more support). Overall though, excellent job!

BOB by Phyro 2019-04-30T05:56:56Z

Absolutely incredible, outstanding, marvelous creation. I'm so impressed with the level of polish on this game. I played it not once, not twice, not thrice, but eight times. Every time was different and surprising and fun. I loved every second of it. Words cannot express how impressed I am, insanely well done!

Information Age by tater-hater 2019-04-30T04:15:21Z

I actually really enjoyed this, the atmosphere you created with the lighting, music, and simple fact that all the people on the street looked exactly the same was really incredible. Gotta say though, the detail where I gave name to the baker then as I was walking to the clothes store saw my name on the billboard was absolutely insane. That took my experience from a 7 to an instant 9, absolutely BEAUTIFUL touch - really made me feel immersed. I had a real moment where I was like, "woah, wait, did that just happen?"

Mr Moneybag by managore 2019-05-01T07:07:13Z

This was a joy to play! I found myself constantly having to weigh which upgrades I wanted, or if it was even a good idea to get them because I needed the coins to both protect myself and buy gems! Excellent design! Overall incredible game all across the board.

Space Struggle by meursault 2019-04-30T23:25:54Z

This was super fun! It took me a total of three tries to beat the game (although I think I got a pretty lucky seed on my 3rd run). The graphics and UI were excellent. Overall, a job well done!

Timezone by joemanaco 2019-04-30T23:45:09Z

This is an absolutely incredible game! I just wish I could've been able to play it through to the end. I think I can confidently say I'm a pretty solid platformer, but god DAMN, this game kicked my ass. By biggest criticism (and what consistently messed me up the most) is that the distance enemies get knocked back when getting hit felt extremely inconsistent. Sometimes, they'd fly halfway across the screen, other times they barely moved at all. It was very frustrating when I killed a mob 3 or 4 times the same way but each time they had a different reaction. It made it super hard to improve from attempt to attempt when each time it felt like a coin flip of getting the knockback I wanted. Otherwise, overall, amazing job, I definitely plan on coming back and giving it another run, haha.

Bloodslinger by ryusui 2019-05-03T23:34:10Z

I'm so glad I found this game! I'm really glad I played it - it's a really cool use of the theme! I really wish it had some music though, that would've taken the game to the next level. Overall though, I had a blast, well done!

Blood Chest by PeachTreeOath 2019-04-30T04:58:01Z

I actually enjoyed playing this a lot! It took me a bit to learn how to properly control and launch enemies, but after a bit I really got rolling! I love the twist on the classic game trope you guys used, it's a really fun game concept. Overall, I think the fact that you guys used the theme - literally - was hilarious, great game!

Heart Knight by mutt 2019-05-01T06:14:44Z

I really like the literal interpretation of the theme! Despite that there isn't really an ultimate goal/direction for the gameplay, I enjoyed messing around with it all the same. Well done!

Soul Surge by Brackeys 2019-04-30T05:07:40Z

Just wanna preface my review with a thanks for everything you do! It's thanks to you and your team that I was able to submit in my first ever Ludum Dare!

So in terms of the game, I was a bit confused, I really like the concept, great use of the theme, but when playing the game, I wasn't exactly sure what I was supposed to be doing. I just went from room to room clearing out mobs, but there didn't seem to be any end goal for me while I was playing. The art was a bit funky as well. Some of it was super detailed but others not so much, I'm assuming the time crunch must've gotten the best of ya and you had to cut back on the mob art. Overall, I really like the direction you took the theme in, well done!

Life is Food by bnmkt 2019-04-30T16:07:20Z

I really like the art and concept you've got here! The music definitely fit the game too, it really tied everything together. The controls felt a bit wonky though and most of the time while playing (even after 5 different run attempts) I encountered quite a few bugs where the character would jump when it felt like it wasn't supposed to and not jump when it was supposed to. Overall though, I enjoyed it, well done!

Depths by potatolain 2019-04-30T22:41:23Z

Wow! Despite the heavy subject, I actually had a lot of fun weaving in and out of the currents. Absolutely well done, this was a great way to bring an important subject to light. +1 for the links at the end of the game!

Seed. by AVAVT 2019-05-01T07:22:13Z

Wow, now this was a super fun game to play. The rush of staving off waves of humans harvesting the trees and the calm periods of rebuilding once the waves died down all felt fantastic. Overall beautiful creation, well done!

Petite Cuiller by lagrume-masque 2019-04-30T22:28:12Z

Despite that it was more a short film than a game, I really enjoyed sitting back and watching the story unfold, well done!

THE GAME by Filipe da costa lopes 2019-04-30T22:14:36Z

I actually really enjoyed this! My biggest issues were that the frame was was insanely slow (at least on my computer) and that it was pretty difficult to figure out how the game worked from the beginning. I kept trying to light the cannon with my w ability until I realized I might need to use the fire to spark it. Despite those things, overall well done!

Bite Delight by Nightfall 2019-05-03T23:00:49Z

This game clearly has a ton of polish, well done! Despite that though, it was suuuuuuuper hard to play since the camera is so zoomed out. It was really hard to see when an enemy was stunned and although the directions said that you could gain extra blood from biting instead of attacking it never said that an enemy had to be stunned to be bit, so spent the first several minutes just wondering why the bite button wasn't working. Despite that I really enjoyed the game once I got the hang of it, it's a really great game concept to have to continually refresh your depleting health and made for great "on the edge" gameplay. I found myself always asking if I should just make a beeline straight for the stairs or if I should go for victims instead. Overall, great job!

Spirits of the Unknown by TheSomeoneXD 2019-04-30T05:38:50Z

Wow. What an incredible ride. You've crafted a beautifully simple game that tells a profound story, I really enjoyed playing this. The ambiance you created with the music and low gravity as well as the fun quirky characters really made this game come alive. Playing this brought back similar feelings as when I first played Celeste. Overall, a job well done, I'm certainly going to pass this on to my friends!

Blob World by Sir. Syko 2019-04-30T22:24:45Z

This was really fun! My very first attempt was terrible, I died super fast, I tried using only melee troops. Once I tried a healer, it was a breeze. I definitely see what you mean by unbalanced, cuz the healers are completely busted. Regardless, I actually had a blast playing this, great job!

PizzoTyping by Carpin 2019-05-03T15:28:48Z

I really enjoyed playing this! The art, motion, sfx make the game really juicy and heighten the experience (great signs of a polished game)! My biggest criticisms are:

- When I made a mistake it took me a bit to realize that there was an animation that plays and so I often lost more points because I was typing during the animation - The same word being repeated made me mistakenly think that I had made a mistake and the word had reset

Despite those things though, this was a blast! Well done!

Minus by DrSkort 2019-05-03T15:18:35Z

This was really cool! I loved the ambiance you created with the music and background, they really set the mood! A few bugs I encountered:

- jumping with space will only lift you up a few pixels - the death sound volume wasn't consistent (sometimes suuuuper loud and sometimes pretty soft) - the character won't move with the final moving platform if he's standing on the back end of it

Overall, I enjoyed the platforming challenges you created, well done!

**Side note:** @drskort I saw your blog post, thanks for offering to check out your reviewers' games!

Bill Hunter by Andreas Roschal 2019-05-01T07:36:19Z

I really like your concept here! Extra points for the naming pun, haha. Overall, I really enjoyed playing the game, it was challenging to find the targets in levels 2 and 3 and it felt that the amount of time I was given was perfect, just enough to find them all, but little enough to apply pressure. My biggest criticism is that I wish the movements of the characters were a bit less random. I often found myself walking around with my target for a good while waiting until I got good RNG to snatch them when as little people were watching as possible. Besides that, I loved it!

Purple Dimension by XCVZXC 2019-04-30T04:09:08Z

I enjoyed that way more than I expected, haha. First run through I got destroyed, but once I learned that increased aim and firerate where OP I pretty much flew through. The broken windows when the flying enemies came through them was a really nice touch and boy oh boy were you right about your music, it was incredible. Although not too innovative, a job well done all the same!

Bloodletter by shp 2019-04-30T23:16:29Z

Ho. Ly. Shit. Now THAT'S a game. Wow this was incredible, I played it over and over and over. I think my favorite part was that I was able to make use of some ol' TF2 mechanics. Using the shotgun to get a pseudo rocketjump was soooo fun. Wow, I'm so impressed, absolutely astounding game.

Lifeforms In Space by Eric Smith 2019-04-30T04:36:59Z

Overall not bad! I really like what you were going for here, my biggest criticisms are that the movement/usage of the board is a bit tough to work with and it's never explicitly stated that the player can sacrifice their population to restore their ships. It often felt that I could never get my troops to do what I want, like moving right next to an enemy at the beginning of my turn when I haven't yet attacked and not being able to attack them. Outside of those two issues though, the atmosphere was really great! I really really enjoyed your music and the battle animations were really cool and intuitive! It was super easy for my to get a grasp on which fights I could take and which I couldn't. I also really like that the player can flee a battle at any point, so I found a great tactic was to use smaller ships to attack fast and flee before the enemy can hit you back. Overall, great job!

Sheep It by anstabo 2019-04-30T16:42:53Z

This was absolutely gorgeous. I loved every second of it. I was extremely relaxed while playing and surprisingly was brought back to the feelings I had when playing Stardew Valley. I think my favorite part of the game though is the fact that you put in automation. Being able to explore the world you created was incredible. Astoundingly well done!

Snek Farm by t3nshi 2019-04-30T05:48:52Z

What a great use of the theme! It took me a bit to get the hang of the controls (the snake moves a bit fast), but after a bit, I found a pretty comfortable rhythm. The art for this game is absolutely beautiful, the logo in your post alone drew me here out of sheer awe. Given the detail in the art, I completely understand the time it all must've taken to complete. All the same, I really wish there was some music to this, would've upped the ambiance to a whole new level. Overall creative and gorgeous game!

LifeCurrencyPlatformer by Quagga 2019-04-30T06:14:58Z

My initial expectation once I booted up the game and started playing was that it was gonna be supremely easy, but it was surprisingly more challenging than I expected. Out of the 3 levels, I died twice. Similar to the difficulty, the controls felt a bit wonky at first, but after a bit of playing they really grew on me. I enjoyed being able to wall cling and dash into a long jump. Despite it's simplicity, I enjoyed playing it. Overall, well done!

Catch all the coins by Matu 2019-04-30T04:50:41Z

You know, I was super surprised when I first read the description about the minimalist tools you used to make your game. Once I collected all the coins, I was expecting something else to happen, but when that simple sound effect played with a "You Won!" message, I just sat there for a solid 3 seconds until I burst out laughing. I got so much joy from that that I played the game 3 more times. The sheer simplicity of this actually made me love it all the more.

Even though you didn't really use the theme at all and the game is super simplistic, you're getting a 5/5 for humor and fun from me, I truly enjoyed this, well done! Hahaha

Oh my blood! by hechi 2019-04-30T22:54:43Z

This was super fun and waay more challenging than I expected! My biggest criticism is the controls, pressing ctrl to fire a spell was a bit difficult to do while also moving around, maybe clicking or pressing a button on the right side of the keyboard would've felt more natural. Regardless, overall excellent job!

SHROUD (Synthetic Human, Radiation OUtput Determined) by thevinter 2019-04-30T16:54:53Z

I really like the concept you've got here! Definitely admire what you guys were able to create with a team created from random people, well done! My biggest criticism is that I was never really sure what I was supposed to be doing, despite that it felt I spent tons of time running around collecting items.

Side note, I found another bug that freezes the game: if you go to the first cave in the northwest, and choose to explore it, you find a freshwater waterfall, but then you can't close the dialogue box and are forced to restart the game.

Pew Pew Crew! by Jonas Tyroller 2019-05-04T03:39:52Z

Wow this was so fun! I'm absolutely astounded at how much polish you guys managed to get in this game, incredible job! My biggest criticism is the scaling of the downgrades. The impact losing crew members has is suuuuper strong, so much so that it becomes near impossible to control the whatever aspect that crew member impacts before you've even lost all of them. Despite that though, incredibly fun, polished game.

**Side Note:** This might've just affected me, but when I ran the game it was a bit laggy for me (was running it on a laptop, so I know, yeah, it's my fault, haha). Setting multiple computer strength levels right before building would be a nice touch in the future, cuz it inhibited my experience a bit

Rock, Paper Scissors: After (School) Hours Edition by SpliceDev 2019-04-30T03:33:16Z

WOW! I got a high score of 28! This was suuuuuper fun to play. Extremely creative with the theme. Overall the only criticisms I have are that timer decreased realllly fast and it's position, relative to the rock/paper/scissors icon, made it hard to see how much time I had left and know when I needed to sacrifice a life when I was so focused on trying to remember which button corresponded to which answer.

TheDescent by geist_191 2019-05-03T23:27:41Z

This is a really good take on the theme! This reminded me of the sacrificing health in the binding of isaac. My biggest criticisms are that my attack range felt kinda clunky and it there were quite a few bugs that made the game a bit unplayable for me. Bats were constantly clipping through walls and would damage me when I moved between screens and - like you mentioned in your description - the screen offset on the second level made it super hard to play, my screen would change to the next room before the character got there and the player had slower movement speed for some reason which made navigating the super slow. Regardless though, what I did play I enjoyed and I'm really impressed with the artwork! Overall, great job!

Acculting by Regoradin 2019-04-30T04:44:09Z

I really like the concept you've got here, definitely a cool use of the theme! My biggest criticisms are that I was never really sure how to play and the visuals fell a bit short. I tried for about 15 minutes to figure the gameplay out, but for the life of me I couldn't get anywhere. Overall, very cool concept!

A tip for the visuals, I think you might've forgotten to set your canvas objects to scale to resolution, because the entire UI was super tiny on my screen.

UpDrain by Artisiole 2019-05-01T06:31:10Z

At first, I wasn't exactly sure what I was supposed to do, but then I quickly learned how to play properly and I actually found myself really enjoying it! Only thing is I got to a part where there's a wall that covers the entire height of the screen and I wasn't exactly sure how to get past. Outside of that, well done!

Kill The Money by Copper_Aardvark_Games 2019-05-03T22:51:58Z

This was actually super cool! Great job with the graphics and overall ambiance! Despite that it was a little repetitive (not unlike my own music, lmao), your music definitely setup that "spy" vibe. My biggest criticism gameplay wise is that I wish you had variable jump heights setup, I would've loved to be able to short-hop and shot instead of having to wait to fall every time. Overall, great job!

sacrificesWay by naturalbornpixel 2019-04-30T16:17:56Z

Wow! Your art is incredible! Even though you didn't finish your game, the parts that are finished are really great! I'm looking forward to see what you make next jam. If this is unfinished work for you, I bet a finished product will be amazing!

utsvulten by ditto 2019-04-30T23:52:25Z

This game is absolutely beautiful. Excellent artwork, tasteful sound effects, and just overall amazing atmosphere. Despite that I had chills going down my spine the entire time, I appreciated the artistry none the less, haha. Well done!

Remember by Elijah Moreno 2019-04-30T03:23:19Z

WARNING: DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME IF YOU HAVE EPILEPSY.

I liked the direction of the story. It started off a slow, but the moment when the father went to bargain for his daughter's health and left her a phone call really hit me. The text scrolling sound really added to the atmosphere and made everything feel more visceral, well done.

Outside of that, the text was super difficult to read at times since most of the background was white and other than the introduction, it wasn't really a game so much as a short film. Overall fun story telling though, I definitely enjoyed sitting back and watching the story unfold.
