This is cool, but here's an issue: the moment you sell your eye, the resulting vignette makes it impossible to click on the consumables in the top right.

thevinter 2019-04-30 11:49

Thanks, fixed it now. Uploading the build in ~30 mins!

victorcrafty 2019-04-30 12:00

Cool game. I like the idea to sell body parts , it fits the theme very well. The graphics are nice. Good job!

arahain 2019-04-30 12:19

I noticed the same thing, I also died after selling my eye.

I really like the idea and the art of this game. There seems to be a bit too much empty space though, in around 10-15 min I found about the right amount of food and water pickups but only a single enemy, and 0 weapons.

lalou 2019-04-30 13:17

Cool, but the environment are a little "empty"

giezi 2019-04-30 13:37

Nice idea, I like the art and the music, also selling body parts is a fun idea, fits well in the theme :) The step sound really gets on my nerves after a while though.

mharring 2019-04-30 13:45

Neat concept! The interaction with the robots is a nice touch and the art style is pleasant. As previously mentioned, the environment feels a bit empty. The user interface isn't particularly intuitive either - moving your hand from mouse to arrow keys feels a bit clunky.

link 2019-04-30 13:51

There is a bug with cave where you find fresh water. It renders up to the player. I am not sure, but maybe when i pressed "Close" it did not work, so I had to restart

adam-elaoud 2019-04-30 16:54

I really like the concept you've got here! Definitely admire what you guys were able to create with a team created from random people, well done! My biggest criticism is that I was never really sure what I was supposed to be doing, despite that it felt I spent tons of time running around collecting items.

Side note, I found another bug that freezes the game: if you go to the first cave in the northwest, and choose to explore it, you find a freshwater waterfall, but then you can't close the dialogue box and are forced to restart the game.

manuel-rauber 2019-04-30 16:55

So hilarious. :-D Sold my leg, continued walking. Water reserve almost depleted. Saw a bottle of water. Crippled to it and died in front of it.

10/10 would sell leg again. :D

thevinter 2019-04-30 16:59

@adam-elaoud Thanks for the kind words! The cave one is a well known bug that we thought we fixed. Sorry for that, I hope it didn't ruin your experience that much :(

@manuel-rauber Glad you liked it :D

entropy 2019-04-30 17:00

This is an intersting game, and I will definitly come back to it later to explore it entirely. Audio is cool, art is good as well, and the subtle humour is perfect. Unfortunatly there are still a few bugs, I got stuck a few times when entering a cave for exemple. Also the bullets are a bit small ;) I Anyway I liked it, and it gets difficult in the end !

thevinter 2019-04-30 17:18

The cave should be now offlimits. Thanks for the feedback.

hugonun 2019-04-30 18:05

Great game, I was progressing and found the memory card, but unfortunately I hit the "R" button by accident and the game restarted.

You should add the game instructions to the itch page :-)

historymaker118 2019-04-30 20:03

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this game, got some fallout/kenshi vibes from it which is never a bad thing. I would say that it was difficult to figure out what I was doing at first as it wasn't clear what objects could be interacted with and which were just there for decoration. Definitely a bit of over-scope here as it seems the gameplay got spread a bit thin. (Always try to keep your jam games simple and short, and spend that time putting the polish in). You've definitely got potential as game designers though, as there are some great ideas in this as well as some nice world-building (which is always appreciated). I hope you guys keep making games and come back for the next Ludum Dare.

ryan-wine 2019-04-30 22:48

I like the game, but id like to have the robots tell me how much they are going to give me for my body parts before I say yes.

also, you should make it so its more obvious that the item buttons are clickable. I thought they were auto-use at first.

It was good! Pretty funny too.

jjjjason 2019-05-01 02:41

Post-apocalyse as a setting is a pretty easy yes from me. The graphics and music fit right in as well (although I'd love to see a night time!)

There's a lot of content here, which is pretty impressive for a Ludum Dare. I agree with Historymaker though that I think every individual element could use some tuning to become a bit more substantial. Overall though, I feel like you have a great framework now that you can iterate upon.

Also, no problem.

jin9310 2019-05-01 09:34

I love the post-apocalyptic things since Fallout and this is a real nice and solid entry. Combines the theme quite well and overall, very nice experience. Thanks for that ;)

justuspan 2019-05-01 10:20

Spend quite a long time to win the game!(I lose the way!) Good mood and atmosphere. The trade system likes a trap more than a reward, never sell your leg! The arts style is good. The downside for me is the ending description disappeared too soon. I got fun from it. Nice work guys!

pusheeneiro 2019-05-01 14:11

A great idea with the exchange of organs, which also involves a certain change in mechanics.

stefan-jovanovic 2019-05-01 15:26

Great game! There is a lot of stuff implemented in the game. The world feels really big! Keep up the great work!

arkinrev 2019-05-01 18:53

I really liked all of the exchanges with the robots, collecting items and not only surviving, but exploring the post-apocalyptic world as well.

carpin 2019-05-01 20:14

I liked the artstyle and the sound. Good animations and don't sell your legs.... I sold it but still finished it! hahaha Nice game!

rudra-nil-basu 2019-05-01 20:31

Great concept and art! The one downside for me was the repeatative footstep audio, good game overall!

schmavery 2019-05-01 21:18

Really cool atmosphere/art and nice mechanics. The map was way bigger than I expected, which was cool. The walking sound also became a little too much for me by the end.

roilbauk 2019-05-01 21:37

This game is really cool! I really appreciated exploring the desert, finding the radiation area, the village. I like the mood from the music too !

Some more feedback, I sold some body part but wasn't really needed the money I got from it.

A "going up" and "going down" animation for the character would be great!

There is some skull which z-index goes above the character (one next to the "Here lies the corpse of the developer", one another down right from the first. I sadly died because I wasn't knowing didn't notice the radiation icon was a filling one, whereas the others icons such as food and water are emptying ones. You may had some visual or sound feedback when he's close to die for any reason :)

I also think you could make the bullets a bit bigger, it's kinda hard to see them :stuck_out_tongue:

Well done guys !

thevinter 2019-05-01 23:01

Thanks everyone for the nice feedback!

@carpin that's some real dedication :P

@rudra-nil-basu @schmavery and everyone else that complained about the footsteps. Sorry for that. We tried lowering the volume but I guess the problem was in the sound itself, we will change it if we ever make a game out of this.

@roilbauk selling body parts didnt turn out to be a great mechanic, we will probably just scrap it. Up and down animation was planned but didn't make it in time. The skull one is a known bug, there are lots of them and every time I fix one another one appears out of nowhere haha.

My biggest grip with the game right now it's that by adding a "bleep bleep" when you are close to dying would've avoided lots of frustration. But thanks again for the comments everyone!

oddsocks 2019-05-02 10:36

Fantastic game. Really enjoyed the pixel art style. Congrats.

stark 2019-05-02 11:58

Cool exploration game :desert: Little bit strange shooting mechanics, but overall gameplay is pretty interesting.

jamesolivermusic 2019-05-02 18:12

Maybe have some kind of indication that the character is dying other than the little gauges at the top? Maybe some kind of animation that he's running out of steam. Good work though, nice art.

mrstari 2019-05-03 12:00

really nice game :hearts:

noobexception 2019-05-03 20:00

Cool game! Didn't understand it fully, but I loved the gameplay and graphics

tricky-fat-cat 2019-05-03 20:38

Good work, although the game is really ambitious.

becher 2019-05-04 06:59

Funny game, but i died because I couldn't fire when two sentinels attacked me after the developer's body (very funny). It's because i sold my arm? it's not expensive enough for such a handicap on the gameplay and i think it's on purpose. But when the theme is "your life is currency", I assumed that selling my arm and leg would bring me more than that would be a problem. You got me :), gg Good work, the graphics are great, but a bit sparse, it's normal when your game area is huge ;) so it's not a real problem.

webox 2019-05-05 01:35

Wow, very complex game.. I sold my leg and the game got super slow haha. Great job! Seems super complex and big. I really liked your interpretation of the theme. A beautiful execution!

josh-mcmillan 2019-05-05 02:01

I read your update in the feed and decided to play. I think you were a bit hard on yourselves for having a few bugs, and I'm surprised how well made it was despite the issues.

That said, I did run into an issue where the radiation field continued well after I was out of it. I'm not sure whether it was an animation bug (seemed to fade in each time after passing over the barrier) or it was intended by design. Otherwise, the art and sound was well done and created a great atmosphere. Hearing about "Death Cave" from previous players made it seem like lore, so coming across the entrance to it was actually fun. That, and I decided I should give my kidney for a gun, and then found a gun like two seconds later. Guess I didn't want that kidney anyways XD

I think I had more fun reading about the things players experienced, and then playing and experiencing it for myself. Had a blast playing!

dock-frankenstein 2019-05-05 07:55

I've played this game in a video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xDIFZyRjY8

You've played mine, I've played yours.

thevinter 2019-05-05 08:58

@franciszek-pyrc you pretty much summed the whole experience in a couple of seconds lol, thanks for playing.

@josh-mcmillan thanks for the kind words, but I partially disagree. Right now, because of the radiation bug for example, you can't even finish the game unless you farmed radaways like crazy. That's not acceptable... That said, thanks for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it anyways.

@webox well yeah, walking without a leg is kinda hard :^). Thanks for playing it.

fear-games 2019-05-05 09:29

really good dame. I do wish that your player sprite updated as you sold parts but i understand the time constraints. fit the theme very well.

yaen 2019-05-05 09:56

It was fun exploring the wasteland and finding items here and there. The mood was quite nice in this one and I felt like I was always in danger. However I beat the whole game and never had to sell any body parts. It was simply never clear why I should even give my body parts to the robots as they just told me something like "hey, I want your kidney, sell it to me?" without offering anything that I'd need in return. The combat had some weirdness to it since the game depends on using the mouse to use items and the combat requires me to put both hands on the keyboard. I think you could have gotten the same shooting mechanics done with just the mouse buttons. As others have said this is a very ambitious project for a game jam so I'm impressed that you got so far with it and made it feel like a fully fledged game.

thevinter 2019-05-05 10:20

@fear-games player sprites actually do update! We had a unique sprite for each combination, sadly they don't always show up and they're kinda unreliable because of a bug :(

@yaen thanks! the selling body parts mechanic is indeed sub-optimal. We started with it because of the theme, but then realized that other mechanics would've been much more fun. The combat is weird indeed, but that's because we didn't have the sprites for up and down movement (that would've added almost 30 more sprites!). And the game was supposed to be keyboard only, the "click to use" thing was added later because I didn't want to implement an inventory. That's why it's not really coherent. Thanks once again for playing.

xeke-death 2019-05-05 12:32

I really enjoyed this.

The graphics were cool, I liked the doodads all over the map.

The music was non-obtrusive and set the mood well. It had the right tones for the apocalyptic setting. Footsteps might need a little variation, and maybe a little more sandyness.

I feel like resources were plentiful, never really needing to worry about them (except when I forgot to use them). This would be good for a difficulty option, harder game, less stuff. Except gun bullets. I only found 30 of them, but had 400+ rifle bullets. And never a rifle because I sold my arm to get one, then couldn't use it.

I liked the graphical change in the radiation zone. Very obvious that it was a dangerous area.

The explosion in the ending was very well timed to coincide with me finishing reading the text. Good job.

shunaky 2019-05-05 13:20

The game seems pretty neat, but I couldn't really see the point in exchanging body parts, as I can easily get coins.

But that was an Awesome work, bro! Congratulations

mickxe 2019-05-05 16:21

I enjoyed it a lot. I agree that some kind of indication when the meters are running down would be good, each of my deaths were because I forgot about them. Good job!

geist-191 2019-05-05 19:00

Really enjoy the game! We had some bugs with the shooting on stream but thats not a big deal. The world is huge and I really enjoyed that. Maybe you could fill the world up a little bit more by adding simple graphics like streets and more houses.

One thing, you should try to make the body-part mechanic a little bit more present in the game because it is very unique. Good job

nippaaah 2019-05-05 21:04

really cool game!!! loved the graphics and the idea of selling your body parts. You should definitely work more on that idea! The level design was smart, the items were where you needed them and the landmarks were very helpful for the navigation. With a little more feedback for the player and some tweaks on the overall level design it could improve so much!

cheesepencil 2019-05-06 00:00

This has promise for a more long-form experience I hope you're not done with it after the jam. Great entry

kaisean-games 2019-05-06 09:34

Very dark game :) I sold my arm and my leg. :scream: For a few bucks :scream:

I found a gun, but I was unable to shoot, is that a bug?

Otherwise, the game is fun. It'd be a bit more fun if the character would move a bit faster, otherwise all is well

Keep up the good work.

dr4g0nsoul 2019-05-06 19:46

The game is overall really great. It has cool characters and memorable locations that are supported by a nicely written dialog. The art is also really great. The only gripes I had with this game is that the world feels a bit empty sometimes. I guess this is because some areas are bigger that they actually needed to be. Another thing is that there should be some notification when you are about to die because of resources. Other than that, good job.

miu 2019-05-07 16:30

I liked it a lot, the world is nice, one thing for when you'll make the full game though is having azerty keyboard option.

bakenshake 2019-05-07 19:23

Love the premise and the tie into the theme. Getting Bladerunner vibes here-ish. The white text on beige background is difficult to read, though.

Love the gameplay, but I didn't have much reason to trade my body parts for resources. Maybe I didn't make it far enough. Also do days not progress unless you spend a night in the RV? I only ever went back once. After I traded my legs, I could hardly move which made the game a lot less fun. I liked the oddities I found around the world and the humor, but I just wanted more.

Overall, great job though for the time you had. Would like to see this developed further.

hechi 2019-05-07 21:57

Nice one! I see you've put a lot of work into this game. Pixelart here is pretty nice, I would like to see the 8 directions of the character animated, but I understand there's no time for everything. The mood you've created between music, pixelart and survival elements is pretty sick. I really like the robots, they looks badass.

daniel-alhadeff 2019-05-07 22:24

Walking should be a bit faster. Also I sold my leg at the begining

thevinter 2019-05-07 22:29

@hechi We're actually working on animating at least the 4 directions, we hope to get it done before the end of the week. Thanks for the feedback, happy you liked the mood :)

@daniel-alhadeff You can now sprint in the post jam version. Does it still feel slow? Would be great to have some feedback for some tuning.

thevinter 2019-05-07 22:33

@miu that will be there with the next update, never even thought about that before the jam, sorry.

@bakenshake the text will be changed as well in the next version, but we're planning on reworking the main menu entirely. The days do not change if you don't sleep. There was this initial idea of having it to be mandatory to return to the RV to rest while farming items, and progressing during the days would create random events in the world. Sadly there was no time to implement it so we scrapped the idea but the RV stayed there. You can now use it to respawn items (and to break the game :^)) and to restore health. Trading the leg is a bad idea I know, sorry for that. We will have to rework the whole body selling parts thing. But thanks for playing, were trying to expand the whole thing more!

wetbox 2019-05-08 11:02

I liked the visual part of the game, the post-apocalyptic world, the idea of sharing organs :)

jsmars 2019-05-08 14:34

Very nice game. I like the atmosphere and story you build up. Its a bit easy to get lost and just wander around though, but I'm impressed you got this all done in such a short time. Great work!

mika-la-grand 2019-05-08 21:14

It was a funny game, but with all of the survival elements it becomes more focussed on scavenging rather than the mechanic of selling of pieces of your body. Perhaps you can change it so that you can sell small parts of your body (fingers for example) and let that be the only currency.

euler-moises 2019-05-09 03:07

I love exploring games. The story was very well set up and the graphics and music are very simple, but very good (in my opinion could have more songs). PS: I played the jam version. The only thing I did not like was to shoot with the arrow keys. Shooting by clicking would be much more practical in my opinion. Congratulations for the game!

I also have a game on LD44. Please, if you can, try, rate and comment. Thank you.

ivan-garcia-filho 2019-05-10 12:50

It's an awesome entry, well developed from beggining to end and awesome graphics!

There's some UI/UX problems, like the grass looks that like a hazardeous spike trap, using the mouse to shoot would be more intuitive and allow more control over the shooting since you allowed the user to click over the items on top of the HUD to use tem, it would follow the same language (use the mouse for everything you want to interact), never had to switch weapons or even open the inventory.

You should maybe show the user some reward for exchanging your limbs (because i finished the game without giving a fuck to the robots asking for my limbs).

Add some feedback sfx to the UI (like the sound of drinking water upon clicking thee water icon), add footsteps footsteps with some reverberance to add more depth to the huge scene you made, character sfx to reflect the primary need and some ambience sound to look more like a wasteland.

neontropics 2019-05-19 12:00

Some nice graphics (I really like the player sprite and the water bottle!), could use some polish and cohesion in certain parts though. Audio is nicely mysterious and fits the atmosphere.

It's perhaps a bit too slow to get going
