Well, I was about to call it a night but saw these goofy characters and was like "gotta try that out first" I like the concept, it takes the theme very literally. The controls aren't the most intuitive but the in-game tutorial is very well done so it's not much of a problem. I like the music. drawings are good by animations could be better.

shaner421 2019-04-30 04:52

Really loved the presentation, and the gameplay is great. I loved slamming the adventurers into the walls and each other lol. Good work!

squirmonkey 2019-04-30 04:55

Wow the graphics here are really impressive, I like the little hop animation too. I ran into a bug though, where the tongue got stuck out, so I couldn't fight anymore.

ghostgoatsgames 2019-04-30 04:56

Gets really hard at the later levels, I liked the mechanic a lot though.

adam-elaoud 2019-04-30 04:58

I actually enjoyed playing this a lot! It took me a bit to learn how to properly control and launch enemies, but after a bit I really got rolling! I love the twist on the classic game trope you guys used, it's a really fun game concept. Overall, I think the fact that you guys used the theme - literally - was hilarious, great game!

iferit 2019-04-30 04:58

I love this game! Supper fun when you hit multiple enemy's together. I did have a bug at first where WASD was not working, but i reloaded the page and it worked.

rosypenguin 2019-04-30 04:58

Great work, you pulled it off well especially with such a large team! I like that you took the time to include an in-game tutorial, and the tongue grabbing mechanic was fun to play with.

zactical 2019-04-30 05:51

Great game! I was able to beat it with only one piece of treasure remaining! I got quite a bit better as the levels went on. Learning to thrown enemies into clumps of others was key for me to come up with the win. On my first load up I think I hit a bug in the tutorial. There was no enemy for me to grab and practice throwing to I couldn't advance. Had to refresh the page and try again. I went fullscreen initially so not sure if that was related. Really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing!

christopher-wong 2019-04-30 06:49

Great Artwork, I loved the gameplay throwing the enemies around but it took me a little time to get use to it.

local-minimum 2019-04-30 09:58

Fun game. I made it to the seventh wave before it got way too crowded and I tried to stay on top of my last diamond to defend it. I think the thing I appreciated the most was the general goofiness of the game. One of the major obstacles in throwing the looters around was my own body which I guess isn't that surprising but seemed a bit strange.

peachtreeoath 2019-04-30 15:21

@local-minimum yea it can get tricky trying to make room for a good throw in the later levels. Though the body can be an obstacle, we found out it can also be used as a way to control the treasure positioning by throwing looters right into yourself when you're in the center of the arena.

sarneh 2019-04-30 20:26

Very pleasant to throw the enemies on each other :) I don't like the art tho. It's like a mix of many styles - games look a lot more enjoyable when everything is in a similar theme, if they're consistent.

no-grapes-games 2019-04-30 21:25

Really fun game. Enjoyed every bit of it! The wave titles were a nice little addition to the game. The whole thing was just really well done. I love the art, the chest had a wicked design!

logicon211 2019-05-01 00:24

I couldn't quite figure out the refresh rate problem it seems. I could get the throw to work a few times but really struggled for the most part. It was pretty fun though! And the art is pretty funny. Good work!

ilprinny 2019-05-01 04:40

I really liked it, I have always liked mimics. I really liked the art. great job, but I didnt realize that the gold was also treasure until the third or forth wave tho.

robotsoulsgames 2019-05-01 05:01

I really like the sound effects, and it was really fun. There was a point where my tongue got stuck, so I died because I couldn't grab anyone anymore. I never got past round 7, but it was really fun.

corbak 2019-05-01 05:30

The art is stunning! Very cool manga style! I really like the way you render the tongue of the chest, how did you do it? is it a lineRenderer ? Also the sound effects are very fun ! Great job.

peachtreeoath 2019-05-01 05:47

@corbak yup, a linerenderer with some fancy bezier+vector math behind it. Funnily enough, we had a similar concept in our previous game, but this one was done with a different programmer and different code.

shulololo 2019-05-01 06:04

I made it pretty far in the game but I think in the 8th or 9th round my tongue wouldn't fling the enemies anymore. The art is pretty nice and I like how the chest looks innocent until I left mouse click. Really enjoyed the game, great work!

t-bo 2019-05-01 07:07

Beautiful characters. Very cool music. Really fun to throw enemies away ! Great work on the tongue. Amazing game !

nonamejammer 2019-05-01 12:08

Very fun concept and the execution is nice too.

serious07 2019-05-01 14:07

Solid 5

akagane 2019-05-01 14:07

Everything is top notch!

pkenney 2019-05-01 17:28

Oh wow, cool idea! I really liked the music, especially that little bridge section with the flurry of notes just before it loops.

The illustrations are excellent. It shines the best on the title screen which is a serious eye-grabber. The detailed sprites don't do quite as well ingame, partly because the movement animation is accomplished by rotation, and rotation doesn't always play super-well with detailed pixel art.

I loved the idea of the tongue, and the very unusual interaction of picking things up and flinging them around. It was a cool novel experience! I see you mentioned it as being similar to the driving game where your bendy arms move the cars, but somehow it didn't come to mind as familiar - this experience felt fundamentally different. I think it was all about the flinging, whereas that one was about adjusting or placing.

I did have that initial struggle getting the hang of smashing the intruders, and even after some play I would still sometimes only get a stun when I expected a kill. But on the other hand, it was super satisfying to get a multi-kill by slamming one enemy into another!

If I could tweak something, it would probably be about treasure that lands at the edge of the door. It can end up in a situation where it gets insta-evacuated on pickup, or at least close enough to feel that way. Maybe a minimum window of time between pickup and escape? Or maybe that's just what I deserve for letting it get that far.

Because I did like the way that little lapses build up into harder-to-defend treasure, so my mistakes kind of snowball.

Theme-wise the classic "mimic" was a nice idea, and you gave it a lot of character! The wet doey eyes when it's not attacking is a hilarious little touch to the art.

This is a really unique experience - nice work!

veryeviltomato 2019-05-02 02:32

Throwing the enemies around feel very pleasant and for the time given this was a pretty complete entry artwise, the sound fits the game although the LAWWW sound of the chest gets annoying pretty quick. Great game.

rocketraccoons 2019-05-02 05:12

Very good and enjoyable gameplay idea! Good job!

maakole 2019-05-02 05:12

Your life is literal currency, that's clever. The controls are a little bit finicky but I love the idea a lot, and the gameplay is really fun. Great job.

balance686 2019-05-02 05:42

I really dig this game! The artwork is excellent (I love how the chest goes from friendly looking to vicious) and the tongue/throwing mechanic is both cool and fun. The audio is nice as well (although only playing out one speaker in WebGL - the mono sounds need to be converted to stereo). I think having a custom mouse cursor that is larger and a contrasting color would help. I lost track of the mouse position after throwing enemies sometimes. Also 9 people writing code for this is kind of wild lol. Great job to the team - this is a standout for me so far!

peachtreeoath 2019-05-02 06:26

@balance686 good idea on the cursor, I actually found that symptom myself. And yea, I think the core tongue code broke like 6 separate times cuz there were so many hands in the code lol

gregoire 2019-05-02 14:57

I had trouble early but I managed to finish it ! Very fun !

ianlux 2019-05-02 22:39

Quite interesting game, it just felt a LIIITTLE bit too slow for my taste, but it has a very cool tongue mechanic!

ruben01 2019-05-02 23:35

I liked the idea of using a chest hoarding its treasure for the theme

fdr 2019-05-03 15:19

Oh wow, I go AFK for one week and you guys make a game without me!! Freakin' hilarious idea. Art and music are spot on (as well as the thumping sound effects). There were a few hitbox glitches though where enemies seemingly went off in to space never to be seen again. A bit more AI in the code and I could see this as a AAA release.

zeriver 2019-05-03 19:26

That's a pretty funny and original concept... and it works! Throwing around adventurers is pretty fun and as you survive more waves, it's becoming more challenging as the more crowded chamber gets. The visuals and audio set a great funny mood, I think it would make a great mobile game.

yaen 2019-05-03 19:48

Haha that was a pretty fun game and I enjoyed the "combat" mechanic as it felt quite different from other games. It was only a bit frustrating when there were too many enemies around and the tongue would just collide with everyone and it was almost impossible to get a good throw. Resetting the player back to wave 1 after losing is pretty mean. I would have prefered if it just gave you back a bit of your treasure and let you retry the wave you failed on.

gerardb 2019-05-03 23:34

Super original, fun and good looking. Congrats!

beastiebeastie 2019-05-04 14:13

Very cute, love the art and sound effects. I really enjoyed the mechanic of using your tongue to grab and hurl enemies but I found it very hard to do the throwing hard enough to be effective. I'm using a laptop trackpad so maybe it would be easier with a separate mouse. Very fun and cool concept. Loved the game over image!

dorblin7z7 2019-05-05 04:50

When I saw the generic anime characters I thought 'Oh no' but then I saw the cute/terrifying Mimic and decided to give it a try. I had more fun with it than I thought I would and the game gets pretty difficult towards the end! I also really liked whoever did the voices.

xsoodx 2019-05-05 05:44

Love the throwing mechanic. This game has potential to be really fun. With some more particles and some faster action this game would be awesome. Great job!

bradur 2019-05-05 05:52

I killed them all! I found that the best strategy was to let them steal all but one treasure, then let someone steal it in the beginning of the wave and grab that adventurer. Then flail around until you had space to clear the other adventurers.

Cool graphics, sounds, gameplay. Well done!

peachtreeoath 2019-05-05 06:08

@bradur hah yep! The final waves are daunting at first but that is my goto strat for finishing it. Some people like to camp 1 treasure, others like to always toss enemies at themself to control treasure positioning. We were happy a few win strategies could develop from the gameplay.

duke 2019-05-05 13:07

Cool idea, I really liked the creative take on the theme. The concept seems to work out great in a gameplay context, but I couldn't even finish the first wave because none of the heroes died upon throwing them against the walls. I've seen your remark about slow performance, but that wasn't the issue in my case. I had a very smooth framerate. My setup is a 144hz monitor, so I guess that the game ran at 144fps as well. Maybe that's an issue? There was some kind of cap on how fast I can move the tongue around and even at the fastet movement, the heroes didn't die.

The art was rather cool, but it looked like it was downscaled a little too much. The details seemed really crunched. Music and Sound were nice too. You hit the general mood very well.

All in all a very cool game, even in spite of my issues.

magnanix 2019-05-05 13:16

BLEEEAH! I loved it. <3

peachtreeoath 2019-05-05 14:56

@duke yea I think the game will run at 144fps and the velocity calculations for the tongue were off so it would have that slow moving tongue for your setup. Unfortunately I only caught this in the final hour of LD so the best I could do was throw up a disclaimer. Appreciate the writeup despite all the hiccups!

bakenshake 2019-05-06 00:35

This is a clever concept. I love it. The first image on the page reminded me of the Dark Souls games where mimic chests try to attack you. I liked the tutorial screens. Smart. However, I felt like the music and sound effects didn't really go together with the setting or player.

I think I found a bug too? Maybe? I flung 2 enemies off screen. They didn't die. They just went off screen, and now I'm stuck at the wave I'm on, because the game thinks they're still alive. I had to wait awhile for them to return to continue playing.

Kudos for having a volume slider and nice animations. I wish we could have included audio options in our entry! However, I do wish there was a pause screen. That's probably kinda nitpicky, though. Overall, nice job!! The idea is hilarious and with some polish could be really fun, especially in a multiplayer setting.

dark1knight 2019-05-07 03:48

Simple graphs but fun game with a good stick to the theme, found it pretty nice overral. However a bit too much of the common wave games, did not liked some of the sounds but the music fit nicelly.

hans1203 2019-05-07 05:53

A fun game with a satisfying gameplay, the tougne of the chest feels a little slow though.

demuss 2019-05-07 08:48

Throwing people around is extremly satisfying and fun! cool concept, graphics and audio i would love to see some powerups like throws enemy super fast so they start to price everyone in their path, or bounce once of the wall before dying, exploding etc... and also one thing annoyed me a bit... when enemies enter the battlefield they go through the gates which is good but when they escape they just disspper after touching gate this part was a bit annoying

keep up great work! HF&GL out side the jam

lubaka 2019-05-07 11:49

Pretty solid game! I liked the main mechanic, the drawings are well done, the audio is fitting but there seems to be a reaccuring bug. At some point my tongue would get stuck in the air and there is nothing i can do for it to come back, i cant control it and from that point on my game is doomed, that happened 2 times in a row, once on wave 3 and 2nd on wave 6 so it seems to be a random bug.

That did prove to be annoying but i still think this game is very well done and deserves my high rating!

papaver 2019-05-07 14:19

Awesome game! I like the graphics, with the chest going from cute  to angry . I love the music. Some more variations in the sound effects would have been nice.

Good that you added a tutorial. On my first play, one enemy got stuck outside the octogonal playfield.

I often lost my cursor in the heat of the moment, so maybe a bigger and brighter cursor would help. I think it would be fun to play on a touch device!

I didn't use WASD that much. I found it funny to notice that I could move myself faster by pushing myself with an enemy in my tongue than that I could walk. The tongue was sometimes a bit slow, or maybe I was too impatient too move on to the next enemy. I enjoyed playing bowling with the enemies. :bowling:

Somehow I managed to got to the final wave after a few tries, but didn't survive that wave. In the gameover screen it would be nice to see how far I got (possibly with some other fun statistics).

Congrats

peachtreeoath 2019-05-07 15:17

@papaver yea that was a design decision we made early on - to make the mimic move slowly so that they couldn't cheese certain aspects of the game. I had no idea you could move faster pushing yourself w the enemy though lol, that's genius!

pixel-boy 2019-05-07 16:46

The concept is fun, the difficulty is well balanced, I lost so close to the end ^^

gil4 2019-05-07 20:05

Love it! An unusual and fun "physical" mechanic, cool and rare theme interpretation (who wouldn't love playing with some mimics?), cute graphics and catchy music/sfx, all creating a wonderful, humorous experience of tossing people around with the mimic's tongue. :D Remember you guys since at least LD42 with the polar disco, wondering if you have any projects outside the jams? Well done!

Edit: forgot to check LD profiles first. Found the 5x Train wordpress website, though apparently it's not up-to-date, so still curious. :P

peachtreeoath 2019-05-07 20:25

@gil4 yea at one point I was trying to make a more official team site like @moski does but I haven't put the time into it yet. Basically my goal has been to bring as many people I know and meet into gamedev so projects have been a big hodgepodge of experimentation and testing out different teams. If I ever settle with a more stable project I'll start posting about it but yea it's mostly short term and small scale stuff.

coleslaughter 2019-05-10 07:15

Do you happen to have a downloadable version of the game? :) Seems like a bit of a toss-up as to whether or not it will work properly in browser. I couldn't kill any enemies in Chrome, but Firefox worked just fine. I worry that not enough people are going to be willing to try multiple browsers, though...

Regardless, I have a lot to say about this one! First off, I love the art style, the treasure chest character is both adorable and horrifying, and I loved the stark contrast between the cutesy heroes and their inevitable blood-stained demise.

The premise and mechanics were also super unique! I would have liked the speed of the tongue to be a little faster and more "punchy" but it served its purpose well. Not sure if this was intentional or not, but I was able to get a lot of value out of chucking heroes at other groups of heroes and having them all splat at once, so it definitely felt like there was some strategy there!

I do kind of wish I had the ability to move my treasure around though. After a certain point, due to the nature of how you kill everything, all of the treasure ends up right at the doorways, and it becomes impossible to protect them as they are immediately stolen the moment an adventurer spawns...

Regardless, this was a fun little entry, and certainly one of the more unique ones I've seen. :) Well done, all of you!

edevjogos 2019-05-11 02:37

It's a really fun game, and the concept is very original and creative, just got a little frustrated because sometimes i would throw someone at someone else and they died and sometimes not and couldn't see why. Ps. it was some really good throws.

peachtreeoath 2019-05-11 04:30

@coleslaughter you know strangely enough, I built a windows version as soon as I came across that fps bug, but it somehow worked even worse! I could barely even move the mimic. Definitely something I'll put on the checklist in the future and I appreciate you going out of your way trying different browsers. One emergent gameplay we stumbled upon was tossing enemies either into each other, or against yourself to drop the treasure more in the center. I know it's pretty unobvious but we thought that was cool and left that in as a more advanced tactic.

knarf 2019-05-18 08:19

Cool feeling when throwing people around :) it became a bit hard / impossible for me on the last 2 levels... The gam e is simple but well scoped. I sometimes felt a bit slow when moving and managed easily the first part of the game without moving at all :) Good job on music and tutorial! + special congratulations working on a team of 11 without any murder XD

sergi-montaner 2019-05-18 21:07

I found the game very original. It's not the best use of the theme I've seen but I enjoyed the game a lot. Also the box art with the cute eyes or the moster face is super amusing. Kudos for adding a tutorial.
