Cool art style. And i so like the gameplay. Overwall good submission.

bloodyaugust 2021-04-27 02:52

Well. That was... both deeply unsettling, but hopeful and powerful.

If your UI isn't responsive, you shouldn't forego the Unity launcher that allows you to set the resolution and fullscreen state. I couldn't read most of the text on my ultrawide monitor, though enough to understand what was going on... :grimacing:

This is a great entry, but technical issues have a significant effect on immersion, which is so important for games like this. Well done though!

cottonfloweryellow 2021-04-27 03:01

Very nicely done on the models.

blanky-and-rocket 2021-04-27 07:17

Dang this looks really nice but I couldn't get past the 'lay in bed with teddy bear' bit. I could pick up the bear and set it down on the bed, and walk onto the bed, but I couldn't interact with the bed to move the story forward. The graphics, music and mood is on point though!

alina-baybulatova 2021-04-27 12:43

Cool graphic! And really like sound and mood)

le-slo 2021-04-27 13:48

Mmm, nice game, serious theme handled correctly. The models are great, and the mood of the scenes are very good (nice reinterpretation of the main theme using effects). The starting screen, with the eyes, doesn't fit the rest of the aesthetic, I also would have enjoyed making the eyes dream by holding the mouse instead of clicking a button (breaks immersion). The "puzzles" felt weird, there wasn't a clear sound cue of when the exit portal opened, and had some troubles in the first 3 levels (1. why I had to interact with the bookshelf? 2. the point was to get the toy car near the house? The portal opened after a while. 3. The idea was to put 4 toys in jail?). Apart from that I liked the movement system of toggling running instead of holding shift, interesting, and a bit unsure of why the character had a jump action. Nice work!

matthieu 2021-04-27 13:51

very cool graphics

1minatur 2021-04-27 14:02

@blanky-and-rocket there was one more interactable with the bookshelf in the first room. Basically as if your mom knocked it down in anger. Thanks for the feedback! It helps knowing what we need to fix to make the game make more sense.

1minatur 2021-04-27 14:07

@le-slo We definitely wanted to add sound queues but were pressed for time (of course) haha. With the bookshelf we were attempting to make it seem like your mom knocked it over. The toy car was you "driving back home". And yes, the goal was to put 4 toys in jail. We could have made that clearer, and also probably should have given a reason to put 4 in there. Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

toilari 2021-04-27 14:15

A very cool game of a serious topic! Great graphics and overall look and feel. Some of the puzzles were a bit confusing, but I enjoyed every bit of this short yet fantastic little story

1minatur 2021-04-27 14:20

@toilari Thank you so much! General consensus seems to agree that the puzzles need a bit more direction.

link270 2021-04-27 15:07

@le-slo Thanks for the great feedback! As a note I added the short jump action simply because it felt strange to not have one. I intentionally made it a short hop due to you playing as a child character. Glad you liked the sprint. I hate non toggled sprints. Haha and thanks for the puzzle feedback. We really need more clear direction there.

fiakaiera 2021-04-27 16:16

First of all: THANK GOODNESS ON TOGGLE RUN. Whoever thought of this, thank you!

I'm really glad you guys didn't go around the route of absolute horror. I have a feeling you could actually push it further and I was kinda on edge the whole time. You did well on conveying the theme and giving the message at the same time. Thanks for reminding us that.

There are two bugs I noticed! * I actually use multiple monitors, so I can actually see the mouse trail outside to another monitor, which can lead me to lose focus on the game window especially where I can suddenly decide to fidget around and accidentally click on my mouse * The cursor does, in fact, not show up after the credits!

Nonetheless, I love the art style and what y'all are going for! Great job~

link270 2021-04-27 16:21

@fiakaiera Thanks for the feedback!! Agreed toggle run was one of the first things I did, can’t stand when it’s not a toggle.

I noticed the mouse not disappearing issue, then forgot about it, then noticed it again after the time was up. *facepalm* Not sure why the cursor decides to run away after the credits, but I’ll add that to my list of things to fix someday. Haha thanks!

thomas-bringer 2021-04-27 16:33

Wow, great entry! I really appreciate your take on the theme, your game definitely stands out from all of these games where you go down or dig. Great narrative on a subject that is difficult to address. Congrats! :D

dominikscholz 2021-04-27 16:38

This is an amazing game! Love the low poly art and the music really gets the mood across. Puzzles were very intuitive and no problem at all. The end was really emotional. I appreciate that it has a deeper message. All in all thanks for the experience!

crazyrems 2021-04-27 17:14

The whole family has been involved for this game, that’s great to see that

The text scrolled a bit fast to me, making text with more than 2 lines hard to read completely.

Aside from that: graphics, music and topic are good, nice job. I was often confused about what to do and when but many already noticed that, so nothing more to share.

GG

andrewkennedy 2021-04-27 17:39

Loved the artwork and the moodiness. Although it was a bit depressing, I think it was handled well.

As you mentioned in the game description, some of the puzzles did feel a little hard to interpret, but overall I think it was spelled out well enough in the dialog.

Nice job!

steelax 2021-04-27 19:25

This was more of an artpiece than a game. while it had some missing guide mechanics it was a thing of beauty with both sound and visuals. and also sent a strong message.

whysguy52 2021-04-28 02:27

Thanks for the feels :( I liked it though :) Spoilers: I liked putting the mom in jail a hundred times

theg 2021-04-28 02:28

Easily one of the most impactful jam games I've ever played. The visuals and music work quite well with it, but I did feel like I bruteforced the first puzzle.

lrl64 2021-04-28 02:32

The music is really good and the graphics fits really well with what you are going for. Puzzle games like this are not exactly my thing so I don't know if some of the puzzles are too obtuse or I am just bad (which I am). Lol

sockpuppetcow 2021-04-28 02:43

Thank you for this, this really needed to exist. The symbolism here is very powerful, especially in the Despair level.

The terrain, puzzles and atmosphere remind me of a game called Dream that uses a similar style to communicate a different message. Haven't finished that one but one I definitely enjoyed.

wheffle 2021-04-28 02:44

Putting together a psychological game for a game jam is ambitious, I'm really impressed. There were some rough edges, game jam stuff and all that, but the core was there. Very cool, gave me some feels. Respect.

sugarsugarsugar 2021-04-28 07:44

The art, ambience, music and story were so immersive that I got chills. Great work!

ru-mey 2021-04-28 07:59

Loved the art style and the overall mood! I was a bit confused at the end with the fog (couldn't seem to find the way), but otherwise I enjoyed it! Great job!

link270 2021-04-28 08:05

@ru-mey the fog is a bit too thick maybe. There is a hill if you walk straight and you get back to the park and the credits roll. So you made it to the end. Thanks for the feedback!

doot 2021-04-28 09:00

Wow great job!

The mood is definitely there, with music, dialog and environment setting it right from the beginning. It lagged a bit on my crappy computer, but I could still enjoy it.

You are aware of this, but some puzzles would benefit from more hints or feedback (as in our game haha). The doc with solution is a great backup plan to compensate!

Thanks for the game 💕

justcamh 2021-04-28 12:06

Heyo, thanks for submitting your game to the stream the other day! Here's the vod if ya wanna rewatch, I hope my feedback was helpful!

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1002310964

skelleroznik 2021-04-28 12:15

Wonderful. I loved the atmoshpere in it. The background music is adding so much to it. The visuals are great. It was a bit luggy though. But still very enjoyable.

togis 2021-04-28 15:59

I uploaded our gameplay of your game on youtube, you can find it here: https://www.youtube.be/watch?v=KLwrzc7DkDo&t=310s

Thanks for being part of the stream, yesterday was amazing!

The ambiance of your game is amazing, the atmosphere is really well done! Congratulation to the team

tomz-best 2021-04-28 17:49

good and big work

bea 2021-04-28 19:38

Neat little game. I like the gradual addition of more color up to the end. Even just the white and yellow and green from the gray landscape was striking. I had to look up the solution for the teddybear puzzle, but after that they were fairly easy. Decent music gave that little extra I need to stay engaged with a game all the way through.

tsuk13 2021-04-28 19:54

Great work on the atmosphere and art. It was depressing but impressive.

1minatur 2021-04-28 20:01

@tsuk13 Not that we want you to be depressed, but we're glad you were impacted by the message, and we hope you were uplifted a bit by the end. Thanks for playing!

kenforest 2021-04-28 20:46

So fun game menu, i like it. The graphic stylistic so cool and atmospheric, cool music, nice work!

erik-brendel 2021-04-28 20:46

Sadly, this game apparently requires vulkan drivers for linux (cannot work with OpenGL), so I cannot test it. Maybe release a web build?

link270 2021-04-28 20:50

@erik-brendel ill do a little looking to see if I can get it to work or not. We can’t do a webgl version unfortunately because we use HDRP in unity. (makes it look better and does a few other cool things, but doesn’t support webGL) Thanks for letting me know though!

Edit: looks like hdrp only supports Vulcan on Linux, no ipenGL unfortunately.

fingamer 2021-04-28 21:49

Cool game with an actual meaning and a little story. I always love it when a game has a story.

The core idea of this game and the interpretation of the theme is creative. I managed to do the puzzles without help, but they could use some feedback. Although I think it was cool in its own way that there were no clues on how to solve them. The mood was great, the audio and atmosphere are very nice. And I liked the simplistic 3D graphics.

Great entry, well done!

arguablyarugula 2021-04-28 22:16

I didn't find the puzzles too difficult to figure out, I thought enough information was provided in the setting and dialogue to figure it out. At first I felt the "hope" puzzle's fog was too thick, but even then the puzzle mostly winds up being that you have to move into a direction where the fog dissipates.

The only thing I'd really change is just using the "shift" speed as the default. I spent the entire time in sprint mode as the walking speed was too slow without it.

feralpoodles 2021-04-28 22:28

Love the graphics!! You guys really captured a very dream-like atmosphere. Important message too. Great job!! :)

kitty-mama 2021-04-28 22:31

My only recommendations to perfect some things would be to have better visual and auditory indications of partial puzzle completion, though I understand that time constraints affected this. Also, an in game volume adjuster would have been swell, but again, time limits, I'm sure. All in all a great game with a great message!

izara 2021-04-28 22:32

wow i've been catched by the ambience of this game i very like the concept and the music this game is so beautiful

great works

1minatur 2021-04-28 22:39

@arguablyarugula I do think the sprint speed is probably the "default" playing speed we meant it to be played at. With the amount of dialogue we had, and how close it was together, we had two possible choices...one speed (the current sprint speed), or a walking and sprinting speed (as it currently is, which is what we decided on). If you happen to see this, I'm curious which one you would have preferred between these two options. Definitely good feedback, thanks for playing!

arguablyarugula 2021-04-29 00:08

@1minatur I guess for my purposes the sprint speed, but now that you mention it I can immediately see the accessibility gains from implementing both. I read relatively quickly and I tend to take that for granted, and I've straight-up released a text-adventure game in a different jam in the past where there was a page of text that disappeared after a time limit and I got complaints that it was too fast to get all of the info.

So with that in mind, I'd say you made the right call. Also for the record having sprint as a toggle rather than hold is always the right decision.

studio-gomp 2021-04-29 00:21

This was a very cool game! I do have a few suggestions, 1. if you want to make it look like the mom knocked over the bookshelf you should just have the mom knock over the bookshelf instead of making the player do it 2. I feel like walking speed should be faster and there shouldn't need to be a sprint, because the sprint doesn't add anything to the game. Same with the jump in my opinion, if it doesn't serve a purpose then there isn't a reason for it to be there. 3. Why 4 toys in the jail? why not just 1? 4. I liked the story a lot, but there was one specific line, "I can choose to be happy!" threw me off a little bit. Not enough to make me hate the story, but it did seem a bit odd. Great work!

briibot 2021-04-29 00:26

A very interesting and aesthetically beautiful game to go through - you certainly did manage to strike a dream-like atmosphere throughout that was saddening and immersing to go through. The giant teddy bears, roller coasters and people in the background really do emphasize just how small you are, and just how small the child must *feel* in relation to the events going on around him. It's extremely difficult subject matter, and it was handled well through your game - the end in some ways felt overly optimistic in contrast to the rest of the game and the complications that do often follow after reports of child abuse, though this isn't necessarily a bad thing - there's enough harsh things in this world that it can be very important to show that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and things can get better, even if it may take time. I also appreciate that you provided resources at the end of your game for learning more - in any game focusing on sensitive topics like this, I think that's ultimately an extremely important addition.

I had trouble with the first puzzle as mentioned by a few other people, and restarted the game before I checked the page and realized what I was doing wrong! With the hint that you needed to interact with a few things in the section, though, I was well able to solve the rest of it without a walk through. Once you know what you're doing, it's pretty intuitive to see what needs doing next, so good job on setting up the puzzles intuitively. I also liked that each of the sections had a distinct and clear colour palette - it gave each section a very distinctive feeling, even in spite of the cohesive design between them. The musical score was also excellent in each part for matching the emotion and guiding the player along the emotional journey you laid out.

The title screen was also very charming, and in some ways a bit jarringly whimsical once you've played through the game, but I think it does well to start the game off on a higher note that rapidly gets darker until finally coming through the other side.

All to say, good work, and a very thoughtful and interesting game! It's one of two Ludum Dare games I've actually downloaded this time around, and it feels worth it for the effort your team put into making a compelling narrative. ☆☆☆☆☆

link270 2021-04-29 00:37

@studio-gomp Thanks for the feedback. When we made the first puzzle the initial idea was that a narrator would describe a scene that was taking place and the player would have to go and "setup" that scene to continue the story. (Hence why you knock down the bookcase, and when you place the teddy bear initially a model of the kid would then appear on the bed holding it) that thought didn't really continue in the later game and this first puzzle kind of stuck around without as much meaning.. So for a more final version we do want to revise this a bit.

Jump is there mainly because I didn't like how it felt to not have it. It doesn't hurt the game for being there and imho makes it feel a little better.

Four for the jail was honestly arbitrary. This was towards the end and I just don't think we had enough time to sit down and really decide what the number should be and why it would be any number. It doesn't help that there is no indication that you need to put four in there, so this point is very valid. Also I will note it was 5 in the morning when I was working on that section, so I don't have a lot of meaningful reasoning behind the choices at that time. haha

Thanks for the feedback on the story as well, we will need to go through and refine that as well so the feedback helps.

Thanks again for playing!

link270 2021-04-29 00:49

@briibot Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. As I mentioned in another comment the first puzzle is a bit different than the others due to us initially having a different idea how they would play out. It's also likely the hardest due to the misleading dialogue and not quite enough details to help, but the puzzles themselves are all super simple, we just need to add a bit more information about them and that should help without needing any additional hints.

I'm glad you noticed the smallness of the child. That was done intentionally and I agree it plays out well.

I also agree the end is a little bit abrupt and a total flip from the final area before it, I noticed this a lot while watching other people play it. This will need a bit of attention for future updates for sure.

I'm glad you enjoyed the music, considering I put it all together in the last few hours I am surprised how well it turned out and how well it's been recieved.

Thanks for the review and thanks for playing!

jake-marks 2021-04-29 00:59

Game was a bit heavy for me. Simple puzzles made this better than a walking sim. Here is the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1004005110

tanner-shelton 2021-04-29 01:27

@studio-gomp thank you for the feedback. I did have a question about your final point regarding the “I can choose to be happy!” line. I think I know what the issue is but I would like to hear your take too to help us understand exactly what was jarring. We wrote the ending in a rush in the last stretch so any feedback is appreciated haha. We didn’t have time to clean it up or really think about some of the dialouge choices.

studio-gomp 2021-04-29 02:33

@tanner-shelton It was mostly the idea that you have complete control over your emotions, which is not true, especially for children. You can't just "decide" your sadness away, I wish it was that easy haha. It takes a lot of work to overcome abuse (as far as I'm aware) especially with children, including a lot of therapy that can go into adulthood, and often depression is still a result. It was an easy mistake to make though and I understood why you said it.

tanner-shelton 2021-04-29 03:49

@studio-gomp Great suggestions! It is nice to have this sort of feedback and I agree completely. I get that same vibe from that line. It will be a good one to adjust to better portray the depth of emotion and hurt that can come from this. I do think the ending is a bit abrupt and has a quick change. We have some ideas to expand on it and grow the story to better incorporate some more realistic ideas and make some of the abstract ideas more plain.

1minatur 2021-04-29 03:52

@studio-gomp I was the one that wrote the dialogue, and I have had that same thought while watching others play the game. For the final area (spoilers ahead for those who haven't played it), I would like to adjust the dialogue to be more "hopeful" instead of "confident".

For example, instead of "I can choose to be happy", I would like to do "Maybe I can be happy". Instead of "Life WILL get better", I would like to go the route of "Maybe life does get better".

Minor changes, but I think that solves several problems. For example, it fixes the hard turn from depressing to overly optimistic and sets it up to be optimistically hopeful instead (which fits better with what our original intent was), and it helps avoid the issue of downplaying depression and the time/effort required to heal from traumatic experiences.

Thanks for the feedback!

mrtroy 2021-04-29 04:07

Really powerful game with a message. I had to see the entire thing through. This game perfectly nails mood and the music really really fit!

edgeboyo 2021-04-29 16:48

Short sweet and extremely atmospheric. I also liked the how the puzzles fit in with the story which in a game with a heavy theme and a tense build-up is a hard thing to do!

kapa6uh 2021-04-29 16:57

Very atmospheric game, pleasant music. I like it

youhou 2021-04-29 17:12

Design and music are simple but I like when it's minimalist. I like the puzzle game side and I found the puzzles straight forward. I didn't have time to read the texts, so I was not a lot involved in the story. I didn't understand how it matched with the theme. Anyway, it's a great game :)

tanner-shelton 2021-04-29 17:21

@youhou thanks for playing! As far as the theme goes, the idea was to go deeper and deeper into your dreams. But that wouldn’t be apparent without getting all of the dialogue.

1minatur 2021-04-29 17:26

@youhou As @tanner-shelton said, the dialogue was important for a lot of the story and did describe the theme. It was a lot harder to take a more abstract approach than a direct approach as most people did. I did a last, quick playthrough half an hour before submission time to adjust the dialogue timers a bit, but since I was rushed and I already knew what it said, I was probably reading it faster than most people normally would, especially if they want to take their time and enjoy the experience. Thanks for the feedback!

etrealjunior 2021-04-29 23:14

Congratulations on the game, thank you for bringing us this message, thank you for the opportunity to play your game, I believe that in addition to fun jams should focus on the best solutions and not on the mechanics for being fun, a big hug to everyone, and I look forward to your evaluations regarding the my game.

the-g 2021-04-29 23:24

The art style is really nice, and the message is powerful. Great job!

ezgoodnight 2021-04-30 00:54

Very moving, very interesting take on the game. Great example of the "Walking Simulator" (not meant negatively) genre. Really enjoyed it, love the look, feel, and sound of the game. We talked on stream--I agreed with you that the puzzles are a little hard to figure out, the context and clues are not always clear. Something to work on, but a lot of really great bones here. Impressive achievement.

idan9000 2021-04-30 05:15

Very cool aesthetic and creative puzzles. I saw on stream that there were some finicky hitboxes/triggers for some areas, but that's a nitpick and doesn't get in the way of the game. Overall, a very complete and satisfying experience. Edit: Scratch that, bugs were fixed!

meenakshi 2021-04-30 05:31

One of the finest entries. Great work!

pijamar 2021-04-30 05:42

Masterful storytelling and art! I was especially impacted by the "Despair" portion of the game. The way you managed to treat such a sensitive subject with thoughtfulness while still making a meaningful impact is very impressive. Feels very complete for a jam game!

tanner-shelton 2021-04-30 07:08

@idan9000 We actually released a bug fix for those hitbox issues, so hopefully they will be resolved. Let us know if they aren't though! Thank you for the feedback.

idan9000 2021-04-30 07:42

@tanner-shelton Nice! I replayed through it myself just now and indeed the hitboxes are a lot more generous and clear now. I was also reminded of how much of a bop the ending theme was.

john-llyod-apolo 2021-04-30 07:43

Great art and story there are times where I wasn't able to read the text because I'm too busy looking around

nosfer 2021-04-30 07:59

FINISHED! Great art, simple but effective graphics, usage of postprocessing and volumetric lights. I would love to see this in VR maybe with some haptic interactions. BTW: I've managed to block myself on falling shelf but no biggie :)

zerokun 2021-04-30 09:04

Sooooo.... i think you should have made a low spec mode 'cause i crashed when i entered HOPE Screenshot (40).png

annie-owl 2021-04-30 10:49

Interesting story! I love the minimalistic style and overall aesthetic of the game. Feels very dreamlike. The BGM tunes were very fitting aswell and helped to build the dreamy atmosphere and amplify the emotions of every scene.

1minatur 2021-04-30 15:23

@zerokun We did optimize Hope a little bit after release, but it looks like we've probably gotta fix it up a bit more. Could you let us know your specs?

1minatur 2021-04-30 15:30

@john-llyod-apolo We've received a lot of feedback on the text. Many people have mentioned that it disappears too quickly, so lengthening the duration would at least help, but it still requires you to take your focus away from the art. We would love to have some voice acting, curious on your thoughts. Would that be something you'd feel would help?

1minatur 2021-04-30 15:38

@annie-owl Thanks for the positive feedback! @link270 threw together those songs super quickly at the end, mostly just so we would have something to present. Personally, I think he's got a lot of talent managing to make such cool songs so quickly. Thanks again for playing!

link270 2021-04-30 15:40

@zerokun yeah hope is the final area and it’s a giant field of grass, unfortunately there is a lot of grass and it can be a bit taxing on lower end hardware, we for sure will need to add some settings and other optimizations to help with that.

raptor851 2021-05-01 01:10

A good take on the theme, and a good topic to cover in general. I liked the overall look + the music was very fitting. Really my only negative feedback at all is that theres a bad control bug, possibly something with the beta unity version used, where it's not working correctly with my mouse, I could only turn so far left or right before I just stopped turning (same with up and down) like it's not resetting the mouse calculation properly (acting like the mosue wasn't bound inside the window but it was!), because of this I had to do zoolander turns every other turn to go the direction that I wanted.

1minatur 2021-05-01 02:20

@raptor851 That's strange, that's the first I've heard of a bug like that. We'll have @link270 look into it further and see if we can't get it squashed. Thanks for the feedback though!

raptor851 2021-05-01 02:45

@1minatur maybe due to some screen detection bug in the new unity version? I haven't really had it happen in other games but maybe it's thinking that my mouse can move the "full range" of my desktop when in reality the game is just playing on my center monitor

link270 2021-05-01 03:32

@raptor851 thanks for that info. I had the mouse being bound to the game window, I probably should have just bound it to the center of the screen. (Not sure if that would make any difference) I’ll have to look into it. (It could for sure be an issue with unity I agree)

noble-robot 2021-05-01 08:58

I really liked the level of abstraction in the puzzles, and the use of a "hub world" to frame the story by chapters. Very effective. Well done!

wheybags 2021-05-01 15:18

So, as promised here's my video playthrough: https://seafile.wheybags.com/f/34d35d8c94f04847bb79/

Really nice ambience + visual style. The interactions felt very polished too, lots of attention to detail. Overall really nice entry. After reading through comments here I think I get what you were going with for the puzzles a bit better, but in the moment I was just clicking stuff and it wasn't very clear to me what that represented.

Putting the bear in bed for example, I figured the next thing I should do was go to bed, as that's what the dialogue said, but that didn't work. Then when looking around I accidentally activated the other two items in that room through the mother mesh, so it was a surprise when things moved.

jaiden-gerig 2021-05-01 16:27

Excellent visual style, the environment felt appropriately dream-like (and in some instances actually quite scary) and had some nice touches of post-processing. I actually didn't struggle that much with the puzzles and though they were a bit short, they fit the theme of the story quite well.

My only nit-pick would be the text at the bottom of the screen, the placement didn't feel quite right and I found my attention drifting away from it while taking in the cool environments (Perhaps they could be integrated somehow?)

Overall though, I thought it was a wonderful little game and had a surprisingly poignant message!

@noble-robot We like the hub world as well, I’m pretty sure @alphabean11 (the artist) is the ones that came up with it, in part so we could make a sort of changing world you keep coming back too.

@wheybags Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, we agree the dialogue for the puzzles is a bit misleading at the moment. We’ve got some plans to expand a little bit and fix those issues in the process, I’m glad you enjoyed the rest.

@jaiden-gerig Thank you! I agree, the overall mood really came together quite well. Thanks for the notes on the dialogue. We need to figure out a good way to have it show up, stay long enough to be readable, and still allow you to take in the environment more. I’m thinking of trying out having the character pause at certain moments and maybe look towards things in the environment to possibly help with that.

Thanks for all the feedback!!

The above comment was me, not anonymous haha

manan 2021-05-01 19:56

You did a really good job with the dream-like aesthetic. I knew that this theme would have people addressing deep topics, but I knew I couldn't put in the thought to do something like that. I'm glad you decided to.

mhorth 2021-05-01 23:34

As others have said, it ambitious to go for an experience like this as opposed to a traditional "action" game. You'd have to really pull it off or else it comes of as a joke and just all falls apart. I'm happy to say that you guys did it well. Really gets the thoughts going.

meritcoding 2021-05-02 06:57

Feedback - Super cool - Liked the puzzles - Sad that it crashed at the end

2bitcrook 2021-05-02 08:33

You did a fantastic job telling a very serious story and handling of a very heavy subject matter and (trying to phrase this correctly) presented it with the best sort of visuals.

I think the art in the game, this low poly, minimalistic meets slightly abstract art not only works perfectly for the dream theme, but also if this subject matter was shown with more realistic people it would feel too real and would be a bit too much for me.

The music was great and I loved the different remixes/versions through each dream state. The movement was also great and I REALLY can't understate how nice it was for you to have dash as a toggle feature. So many have it as "hold to dash" and it's just more of a nuisance to do so.

Also didn't get any bugs on my end and was able to complete it all on my own!

And finally loved the ending scene, I love it when credits play over gameplay/you still have control to wander around. It's just a nice thing to have.

Overall your team did great and you delivered a game not only with a powerful and hopeful message, but links to help people and all of this in 72 hours.

Great entry and great job.

(And final quick note, love your teams logo!)

suika343 2021-05-02 15:35

very well made for a jam game. it is very atmospheric and the graphics is very beautiful. great work!

link270 2021-05-02 16:09

@2bitcrook Thanks for the great feedback! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a toggleable sprint is the only way to go so I made sure to do it that way. We did try to keep things minimalistic Ian’s abstract in that way. I like the idea that everything is vague in a way so whoever is playing can fill in the blanks on the specifics of the story themselves. This helps it from being too direct and also let’s each person have a different experience, especially if they can personally relate to the story and issues.

Agreed on the ability to move during the credits as well. Small things like that, especially in a game like this, I’ve always liked.

Glad you like the logo too, we spent a bit of time redesigning it recently as we had started working on a larger scope game (hopefully to come out next year) and this game jam was a great break from that and gave us a lot of experience.

Thanks again for the feedback! And for joining us on stream for a bit. (And watching me struggle through frog haha)

naali 2021-05-02 17:40

Nice job. I really liked the graphics.

doctortm 2021-05-03 22:56

Great jam! The graphics style is very interesting. Great mood and atmosphere

fabula-rasa 2021-05-04 00:36

Music did a lot to help create the atmosphere and mood here. It is really well done and changes as the scene needs. I liked that very much. The changes in color and shading of the scenes was also a very nice idea. I wish it was even more prominent! Low poly and non-detailed look actually works really well here. The grass at the end looked a bit out of place (not fitting to the style of the rest of the game) but then I figured that it's probably purposeful - after all our hero just broke out to practically "a new world" and maybe a bit of a different graphics emphasizes that.

Overall, an excellent job on the atmosphere all around. Having an ability to jump was nice, although I didn't really feel like jumping till I got to the meadow.

Personally, I wish you had a different subject. This reminds me of the worst of humanity, of the worst people I knew, and that's far from fun. And, yeah, I know that spreading awareness is important.

In any case, it's still a very nicely done jam game!

tanner-shelton 2021-05-04 01:30

@fabula-rasa thank you for your feedback! One thing we wanted to showcase more but didn’t have time to implement was the neighbor or person who helps out in the third area. In our official release in the future we plan to focus more on that. So showing the sad side and the bad but also the good of someone who cares and how much that can mean to someone. More so showing the impact you can have on someone’s life. Thank you for playing!

ardorugus 2021-05-04 02:43

Overall deep and dreamy, 3D art is exciting. However, managed to start with a bug (got Teddy behind the closed door). Actually read the story, cause, well, I'm obviously reading, if there's a potential for. Though the dialogue design and placing could be better. Music is a bit weird, but goes with the game. P.S. btw, thnx for playing our piece.

olddog 2021-05-05 00:37

Nice graphic  but I play one minute I fells boring

link270 2021-05-05 01:08

@olddog This game is more about the ambiance, story, and experience than simply having fun. A fast run through of the game also will last you at least ten or so minutes so I hope you had the chance the play through the whole game. :)

seebass22 2021-05-05 11:15

Very cool game! I think you succeeded in those goals. @link270

One issue I did have though was that the mouse look got locked in a certain area and I could not make a full 360 turn. At one point it didn't allow me to look down either (linux build). Didn't prevent me from finishing the game though

link270 2021-05-05 13:56

@seebass22 Thanks for letting me know. That’s interesting it would get stuck like that. We saw one instance of some weird movement behavior when someone has a controller plugged that was affecting the movement. I haven’t had time to fully test out the Linux build so it could be something unique to that. I’ll be sure to take a bit of time to test it out better in Linux for sure. I am glad you were at least able to complete it.

ismael-rodriguez 2021-05-05 21:08

An interesting experience.

Visually it's great. Low poly is low poly, it looks good and gets the job done; the use of color, lighting, and fog all come together very well! The musical motif, evolving through each chapter was a very nice touch.

I appreciate that there are interactions... *something* that needs to be done beside walking to each point in the story. I would have liked a little more feedback (visually or with sound) to let me know I was doing what I was supposed to. Sensitivity and look inversion options would also be nice.

It's cool that it has a message, I'm left a little uncomfortable, and that's probably a good thing.

Good job!

louhol 2021-05-05 21:16

The atmosphere and colors are very catchy. Sounds might change depending on the emotions of the levels. I know it is a jam game, but if you're planning to develop the game, I'd like to say you could render the pick up objects with a different camera so they are always rendered in front of other objects. I am looking forward to see it in Steam!

link270 2021-05-06 00:21

@ismael-rodriguez Thanks for the feedback! (Your game was one of our favorites!) We for sure want to add a few things in a post jam version. Adding additional sounds and interactions is on the top of that list. Help things become more immersive and a little less confusing haha And of course some settings and the like will be added as well.

link270 2021-05-06 00:22

@louhol Thanks for the notes! We want to try to make a more fleshed out post jam version, so that’s some good advice I’ll be sure to look into for release! I really enjoy all the feedback we’ve gotten from other devs like yourself.

Wow, wasn't expecting such a deep subject and such a polished product, I was positively surprised. The story was immersive, the locations well-designed and the whole experience left me thinking, which is very good. I like the incorporation of giant teddy bears and shillouettes in the background, it really made me feel like a small kid in a big, harsh world. The music was pleasing and I really liked the part with putting "mom" to jail which looked a bit like baby cradle. Really well-thought game design. Congratulations on 5/5 stars game, no wonder so many people rated and commented : D Also - yay 100th rating : D

paulloz 2021-05-07 21:29

Love to see that kind of games in jams more and more! Graphics and music are 100% on point, you definitely knew what you wanted to go for and went for it. Perfect! Can't wait to see more of what you'll be doing in the future.

link270 2021-05-07 21:33

@paulloz Thanks!! It was great watching you play it on stream too!

potatolain 2021-05-07 21:53

Wow, after what has to be 100 comments I can't think of much to add that hasn't been said. As many others said, you absolutely nailed the mood here with the music and graphics. Not a lot of entries go the emotional story-driven route, but they're always a treat.

The hints on the puzzles in the description helped quite a bit - I can see myself having been pretty stuck on a few of them without them.

I will mention that I didn't get the credits after running for a while, and actually thought the game just ended in a field with music and the few final messages. I did manage to hit the edge of the world, if that helps. I apologize - I know that's not a super descriptive bug report, but I'm not sure what I might have done differently than the average person.

This didn't take away much though - I did see all the final messages, including the "I can choose to be happy". (I saw your comment earlier about changing this wording, and I agree that would make a big difference.)

I hope for the best for your studio! If you can do this in a weekend, I'm sure you can do many great things.

link270 2021-05-07 22:15

@cppchriscpp Thanks for the great feedback! About the final scene with the credits, if you walk straight you will go up a hill to the small playground. Once you reach that it triggers the credits. We do have plans to make that more obvious. Watching some people play we’ve realized that a lot of people look around and go in a random direction and take a while to get to the center. When I played it I just started walking straight so I never thought anything of it. Haha But for the future we do want to make more visual cues for that (or change it entirely) so thanks for the notes!

gamescodedogs 2021-05-12 06:23

I really loved the visuals, that’s an eye candy.

sublustris 2021-05-12 06:24

Красиво, аж завораживает. Музыка хорошо подобрана. Молодцы, так держать!

vladadamm 2021-05-13 23:18

That's an original take on the theme and things like child abuse aren't something that's often tackled in games and congrats on not doing it too wrong (it's far from perfect but that's a very sensitive & complicated topic that's hard to manage).

The visuals were really good, and the mostly monochrome style & abstract environment really nails the dream feel.

There's a bit of lack of feedback & hints on some of the puzzles though (exit behind the door in 1st level & having to put 4 of the moms in the jail).

guitarbro 2021-05-15 20:42

Really like the atmosphere you have here. The graphics were relatively simple, but effective and were supported by the audio well. Good job tackling a difficult subject matter in a jam game!

itsboats 2021-05-17 19:54

This was a really amazing experience. The visuals were straight up stunning, controls and puzzles were intuitive (The only one I had a problem with was the first one where it says you go to sleep with the teddy bear and you have to knock down the shelf I think?), and I like the message you are conveying through the gameplay! The art style gives me SUPERHOT + Mirror's edge vibes with the colors + Limbo with the fog and volumetric lighting. I'm seriously in love with it haha

Well done all around!

molpe 2021-05-17 20:40

Loved this game very much  The art style, the giant teddy bears, the gameplay, the audio, the story, everything
