cute game but damned if I can beat that other planet!

giri 2017-04-26 03:50

So cute!!

those-30-ninjas 2017-05-01 13:19

Love your art, The expressions on the asteroids and planet are cute as hell. I wish that the screen wrapped at the edges, It's fairly easy to get lost off camera.

those-30-ninjas 2017-05-01 13:19

fangzhangmnm 2017-05-01 13:22

It's the best one of the game which has a planet as main character i've seen!

valicitor 2017-05-01 13:24

Love the Art, fitting for the theme given and fun in a frustrating kind of way, I'd like to see the adding of a health bar, the face of the planet is a nice rough indicator but knowing how much HP I had remaining at any one point would be better in my opinion. Keep up the good work

yukonw 2017-05-01 14:06

I'm not going to lie, the game is absolutely adorable. My only nitpick is that the boss is too much of a bullet sponge, and it would have been cool if he had phases where he did other attacks, but for the short time, this is pretty rad!

badscotsman 2017-05-01 14:12

The little details in the art made it totally worthwhile to play. Tough, but enjoyable.

jane-pr 2017-05-01 14:15

I truly loved it! Pretty replayable, cute art, not that easy, but not that hard either.. Hope to see new features on this, it's a great base :)

th-alien 2017-05-01 14:51

The art is simple but really effective ;) maybe a little too hard but it's a ggod entry! :D nice work!

redpanda 2017-05-01 15:42

Love the pixel art, and the game mechanic, pretty hard and bit tedious to destroy the other planet. Gave up half the way through :P

itzhak-w 2017-05-01 15:44

great game, but oh so hard! also, as mentioned by others - a health bar for our own planet can help.

izunah 2017-05-01 15:49

Hey, really loved the art style in the game, the expressions of the planets / asteroids is great, and I found the use of your 'mood' as a representation of your health a great way to handle that while keeping the UI to a minimum. I wasn't able to beat the first (only?) planet after several attempts, but I was quite entertained the whole time. I did notice a minor bug in that the opponent health bar doesn't reset on a new attempt until the first hit. Very minor, but when I first saw that I expected I may have a chance against him; but it promptly reset to full after the first hit.

Good job.

Edit: Just went back and beat the planet. As I leave the page I noticed in your gif that you could throw the asteroids, and that made the fight a lot more engaging; and easier.

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-05-01 15:57

Cute and fun !

xavier-indie-gamedev 2017-05-01 16:02

LOVE the graphics. Nice mechanic too (though a bit tricky to control), and a unique interpretation of the theme (playing AS the world). Really would've liked to have seen a health bar for the player, maybe multiple enemies (or a boss that wasn't so hard to kill) and sound could have really added to the game (I can imagine an awesome 8-bit arcadey space soundtrack).

Anyway, nice job!

If you have time, please check out my game too ^_^ https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/no-minor-task-party-of-a-lifetime

appix 2017-05-01 16:02

A very cute game. Game play is special. But I need to spend some time trying to learn how to play it well—— it's so hard...

lookslikesomething 2017-05-01 16:06

Can't beat that planet, but what a nice game!

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-05-01 16:10

I liked your game ! I found your concept strong and very efficiently executed. It's allready very enjoyable even though it would lack a bit of UI (health bar, stuff like that). Also I'm pretty sure some sound design/music would have underlined the nice expressivity and huge cuteness of your animations and designs. It's rated <3

glimaleite 2017-05-01 16:11

Oh, I loved the orbit-shooting mechanic. Lovely graphics, really. I wish I could make pixel art like that. Great job! Any reason why you didn't go compo instead of jam?

nimbus 2017-05-01 16:22

Great game all around! Others are saying it's difficult... For me, it was the perfect difficulty. I failed once, and killed the planet on the second try.

I liked everything in the game: The throwing mechanic, the boss's AI, the beautiful graphics and animation, the way it all went together... Top notch.

Only suggestions would be to add an HP bar to the Earth, and adding music.

kr4ft3r 2017-05-01 16:25

Cute and nice gameplay idea. It is always impressive to achieve AI who uses same system as you are to fight. Tip for new players - hold space to make nearby rocks orbit, release it to launch them long range. Good job.

sapoi 2017-05-01 16:33

Love the graphics!

docgeraud 2017-05-01 16:42

This game is crazy cute ! <3

samlo 2017-05-01 16:47

Hey this is fun! Great style and a neat mechanic. I wish there was more of an indication of the player's health other than the expression of the planet, it's pretty hard to tell how well you're doing. Neat game!

silkworm-sweatshop 2017-05-01 16:48

Simple and fun! Art is simple but polished and cute.

chloravirgo 2017-05-01 17:02

Love the mechanics, the graphics and the hardcore :)

takusan 2017-05-01 17:06

Simple, but the mechanic is loads of fun in itself, and very fluid. Good decision when it comes to art (feels simple and polished, really helps the whole idea).

UI could really use some other kind of indication of player's health, though - I didn't notice that it was signalized by expression up until my 4th playthrough.

That said, it's really fun overall.

Cheers!

hekst 2017-05-01 17:07

I see what you did with the background 😃 I love the artwork and the gameplay! The faces are cute, and the game is difficult, in a good way.

chaseplays 2017-05-01 17:13

I loved this! It has great physics, incredible art, and it was (most importantly) fun. While I wasn't able to beat the boss (I'm not sure how anyone can honestly), and it was a bit slow for the boss to respawn (unless he was there the whole time). This game just felt like one awesome bossfight, which was great, because it didn't need anymore, but it would have been nice to be immediately thrown into the battle upon respawning. The art fit the game perfectly, and the expressions breathed life into the game. These were some of the best visuals for a LD game I've seen yet. I could have easily seen some expansion into SFX (if you could make hitting asteroids into things have a satisfying THUNK sound, that would be perfect), but I understand that that can be difficult to accomplish. Overall, great job, and thanks for making such a great experience!

harusame 2017-05-01 17:21

Great game, graphics, animations and physic are really nice :) The asteroids are super cute ^^

Too bad there are no sounds :/ Why you don't use Bfxr to do some 8-bit sounds ?

matita 2017-05-01 17:58

This game is super cute. Love the art, the expressions, the trails, the animation, the mechanics.

Maybe I'd have liked much an escalation of levels and not playing from start against the big boss (I died a few times before winning), but the game is absolutely perfect!

Great work!

yami-no-tenshi-8 2017-05-01 18:52

Really nice game and smart idea of gameplay ! I first wondered why there wasn't any HUD for our Earth life before understanding that her face was actually an indication of her health state, really good idea there too ! Tried several time the game before managing to win, I appreciated the challenge ! Would be perfect with some sounds (well I guess that there is no sound in space, right ?)

The graphics are great, love it !

articulated9 2017-05-01 19:08

Innovative mechanics, cute graphics, fits the theme well...my only gripe is a lack of sound, and I wish there was a bit more variety in Desumaton's attacks.

Still a very strong entry however!

puppetmaster 2017-05-01 22:14

The gameplay is unique and fun. I like your entry. Well done!

meaty-mclazerpantz 2017-05-01 23:44

Great! Very challenging, too. I like that. The facial expressions and animations of the planets are what make it.

If you have the chance, check out my little puzzle platformer.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/the-z-axis

akirassasin 2017-05-02 02:22

Simple and fun combat mechanics :) think an indicator of your grabbing range, along with more precise health expressions will be very helpful!

sun-wukong 2017-05-02 08:31

(I've dl'ed your game days ago and after playing it only now spend like 15 minutes to find your game page :( we damned need search function or game list at least)

Gameplay is pretty fun, I liked it. The only thing - it feels like asteroid field is too dense. I think with less asteroids on field and more space for maneuring it could be more fast-paced and fun. Now the most time you spending trying not to hit random asteroids on field.

filogc 2017-05-02 14:44

Really clean graphic style and compelling concept. Love it!

bart-huylebroeck 2017-05-02 20:04

I love the theme, I love the silly graphics, the game was very difficult but not frustrating. I also would've preferred to see my own health.

gfm 2017-05-02 23:48

Really cute game! It almost made me feel bad about defeating the Desumaton...

It's quite interesting how simple the graphics looks, but how many details you were able to add... I could notice the bg parallax, particle effects on explosions, the trail... Not to mention how much the white outline helped make everything standout!

And those faces... They are great! Specially how they move from the center of entities, selling the sense of velocity! Not to mention the player's hidden health bar! I did really dig your graphics!

The game is really fun! If only the camera moved slightly ahead, revealing where you are going... As it is, running away from the boss is quite hard (as asteroids may suddenly appear in front of you).

remicy 2017-05-03 08:08

I finally beat the Desumaton! It took me half hour to practice. Very fun game, and great art! Enjoy this very much. Thanks for the game!

dejvo 2017-05-03 08:28

really nice graphics and a simple, but effective mechanic. But is it even possible to kill the big guy?

mrerdalural 2017-05-03 09:08

Nice graphics and good gameplay. Thank you for the fun game!

renatopp 2017-05-03 12:25

Hi there! Nice game entry you got here!

What I like: - Graphics are cute - The idea is cool - *It is really cute* - I love the details like when you hit the asteroid onto something, you have a great satisfaction on impact.

What I don't like: - The movement seems to have an excessive acceleration, making it very hard to keep the arrow buttons pressed to move the planet

I hope you had some fun making it. It is really great.

nuebomundo 2017-05-03 12:53

Awesome little mechanic!

When I finally beat the big planet I was left with the desire for more exploration and battles with my cute little planet. Hope you expand this into something more complete.

ava-skoog 2017-05-03 20:35

So cute! So cute it breaks my heart to catch the terrified little asteroids and hurl them away! ;--;

Absolutely love the art direction. Real pity there's no sound. I can almost hear it in my head! c:

My only criticism would be that the game says game over also when I win, which is confusing. The acceleration and speed is a bit of a double-edged sword: on the one hand it's great for getting away in the last moment when the big planet approaches, but on the other hand it can be difficult not to hit stuff. Not sure!

I didn't actually notice it at first, so I was a bit confused, but when I realised that the player planet's life was shown by the facial expressions, I found it really neat! Doesn't tell you exactly how many more hits you can take, but tells you when to start playing it safe, and makes the screen a little cleaner with less HUD. Very nice. c:

Really good job!

Note: there's a bug when the game is over and you play again, as the boss's life meter doesn't fill up again.

gurkenlabs 2017-05-03 20:41

This game really is a fun one to play! The unique mechanics and cute art style are very appealing. For me, it took a little too long to beat Planet Desumaton as you basically did the same thing over and over. I would have wished for another type of interaction with the asteroids (maybe some circular impulse that pushes away all close asteroids or something like that.)

norrimo 2017-05-04 08:56

Well that's challenging but I like it very much. :D But what would be the end boss? A black hole because of his huge gravitation? :o

maggardjosh 2017-05-04 21:38

Gorgeous graphics! That boss has so much health though! :) Finally beat it, but that was tough. Enjoyed this entry good job!

stevenjmiller 2017-05-05 08:33

It took me several tries, but I did beat the boss. Wonderful graphics and mechanics, and also one of my favorite uses of the theme so far. Great job!

mikea 2017-05-05 09:53

Really cute game, I can see this be published on mobile stores, with more game mechanics.

citsua 2017-05-05 19:18

Awesome graphics, but real tough game! I just couldn't manage to beat that planet. The "orbiting asteroid" animation was really satisfying to watch, though!

thunraz 2017-05-05 19:43

Cutest planet this Ludum Dare. Awesome graphics but some sounds would have improved the atmosphere even more!

Really great entry with good mechanics! But I suck at the slingshot...

adamd 2017-05-06 08:01

There isn't much more that I can add to what others have said. It's a nice idea and an interesting take on the theme, I'd love to see it developed further. The graphics and animations are beautiful, I think this has lots of potential. Great work!

wevel 2017-05-06 10:50

Very fun game, I do like how you have to try and aim the asteroids as well as the faces on the planets and asteroids. There is sometimes a problem that if you have two asteroids captured and they are too close together they will destroy each other when released. Also, it would be nice if there was a better way to see how much health you have.

invader 2017-05-06 11:21

Asteroid grabbing and throwing mechanics is nice and really innovative. Great job!

tselmek 2017-05-06 13:27

Pretty unique and graphically pleasing game but damn does that boss have a lot of health. Could be nice to have a clue on how much health we have too. And it's really too bad there isn't any sound feedback.

zorg 2017-05-06 18:01

I agree with Tselmek in every point. Asteroid throwing is fun, but the grabbing radius could be a bit higher. I almost beat Desumaton (< 10% left), but then it killed me and i stopped playing. I'll try again later.

pmarincak 2017-05-06 19:49

Cute game! This is pretty different from everything I've seen so far. Great job :D

siegfriedcroes 2017-05-07 14:59

@spinaljack Thanks a lot! Also for being the first to play/comment.

@giri Thanks!

@those-30-ninjas Thank you very much! Really glad you liked the art and faces. I thought about adding screen wrapping but it was a bit too difficult to implement in the short amount of time I had left. Would definitely be something to think about if I continue work on the game.

@fangzhangmnm Aww thank you so much for saying so!

@valicitor Thank you very much! Yeah, I really should've added a health bar but I ran out of time... Put too much time in less important details like the face, silly me...

@yukonw Thanks a lot! Yeah, some more interesting behavior would be nice but I have little experience with enemy AI so this is all I could do within the time I had.

@badscotsman Thank you very much for the nice words!

@jane-pr Thank you! I'm definitely thinking about turning it into a full game some day.

@th-alien Thanks! I made it a bit difficult so it takes some time and exercise to beat the otherwise really short game.

@redpanda Thank you very much! Really glad you liked the pixel art. You should give it another try!

@itzhak-w Thanks! Yeah, should've really added one...

@izunah Thanks a lot! Really happy you like it. I tried it and you're right, about that minor bug. Thanks for reporting! Nice to hear you game back and were able to beat the game, congrats!

@la-mecanique-du-plastique Thank you!

@xavier-indie-gamedev Thank you so much! I had a lot of different ideas while making the game. I thought of having multiple enemies but I had some trouble with writing simple but effective AI so in the end I decided to make the whole game a boss battle. I also ran out of time for sound... I will definitely check out your game.

@appix Thank you! Glad you think it's special. Hope you'll give it another try.

@lookslikesomething Thanks! Please try again.

@la-mecanique-du-plastique Thanks a lot! I really wish I could've added sound but I ran out of time... Glad you enjoyed it anyway.

@glimaleite Thanks! Really glad you like the mechanic, I'm quite proud of coming up with it myself. I Always go for the Jam so I have some extra time.

@nimbus Thank you so much for the nice comment! So glad you liked all of it. Your suggestions are also the main things I would've liked to be included.

@kr4ft3r Thank you! The AI is really simple but glad you like it anyway. That is definitely a good tip.

@sapoi Thanks a lot!

@docgeraud Thanks! It's all about adding faces.

@samlo Thank you very much! You're definitely right about the health, for most people that's the main thing that's missing.

@silkworm-sweatshop Thank you very much!

@chloravirgo Thanks! Happy to hear you liked all of it.

@takusan Thank you! Nice to hear you liked the mechanic, I'm quite happy about how it turned out too. And yeah, a health bar would've been nice.

@hekst Thank you! I wanted to keep the background simple but still cool so I worked with 3 layers of stars to add some depth. Glad someone noticed/liked it.

@chaseplays Thank you very much for the extensive feedback! The boss is always there, he's just higher up on the map so before you start the battle you can try out the controls a bit. So nice to hear you think my game has some of the nicest visuals! That really means a lot! I wouldn've loved to add audio but sadly I ran out of time...

@harusame Thank you very much! Really glad you liked everything. I used Bfxr for my previous games but for this game I just ran out of time...

@matita Thanks a lot of the nice comment! At first I wanted to make multiple enemies but I was having some trouble with AI so in the end I chose for the game to be a boss battle.

@yami-no-tenshi-8 Thank you very much! Glad you liked the way the Earth health was shown, I would've added a health bar if I didn't run out of time. Yes, I totally went for no sound because of that! Haha, seriously though I just ran out of time for that too...

@articulated9 Thank you! Yes, I really wish I could've added sound. Some more variety in attacks would've been cool too.

@puppetmaster Thanks a lot!

siegfriedcroes 2017-05-07 15:00

@meaty-mclazerpantz Thanks! Really glad you liked it. I'll sure check out your game (as I will check all games of people that have commented).

@akirassasin Thanks! Oh yeah, seeing your grabbing range would've been nice.

@sun-wukong Thank you very much. Glad you were able to find my game back. Someone else commented that it would help if you moved a bit slower so it's easier to avoid asteroids.

@filogc Thanks a lot!

@bart-huylebroeck Thank you! Glad you loved most of it.

@gfm Thank so much! Really happy to see someone appreciating all the tiny details in the graphics! You're totally right about the camera.

@remicy Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it and congrats on beating it!

@dejvo Thanks! It's definitely possible.

@mrerdalural Thank you too for playing and leaving a nice comment!

@renatopp Thank you very much! Glad to see you like most of the game. I didn't really think about the speed of the player that much but you're actually right, thanks for pointing that out.

@nuebomundo Thanks a lot! With all the nice feedback I got I'm definitely thinking of expanding it into a full game.

@ava-skoog Thank you very much for the extensive feedback! Really happy you loved the graphics so much. I agree with your criticism and will definitely take it into account if I continue work on the game. Thanks for reporting the bug, I'll fix it.

@gurkenlabs Thanks a lot! I really like your idea for a second interaction with the asteroids!

@norrimo Thanks! The end boss would be a planet bigger than your screen, haha!

@maggardjosh Thank you! Congrats on beating the game.

@stevenjmiller Thank you very much! Means a lot you think it's the best use of the theme so far. Congrats on beating the game!

@mikea Thanks! I'd sure like to continue work on it though I don't know if I'd make it for mobile. We'll see.

@citsua Thank you! Glad you liked the orbiting asteroid animation. Hope you try again.

@thunraz Thanks a lot! Nice to hear you think my planet is the cutest. I would've added sound if I didn't run out of time...

@adamd Thank you very much! I'm definitely thinking about turning it into a bigger game.

@wevel Thank you! Yeah I've noticed the problem with asteroids being to close together, just didn't know how to easily fix it so I left it that way.

@invader Thanks! Really glad you like the mechanic.

@tselmek Thanks a lot! So nice to hear you think it's unique. The face of the planet is the clue even though if I continue work on it I will add a player health bar. I would've added sound if I didn't run out of time.

@zorg Thanks for your comment! Grabbing radius is definitely something I'd tweak, also a way to see what the grabbing radius is. Hope you'll try again later.

@pmarincak Thank you very much! I hope different is good.

dakikad 2017-05-12 05:25

hey there :D I saw your post on that Pixel Art group on Facebook - I'm the guy whose computer crashed ;( - and I finally got to play Desumaton

and it's amazing *---*

The mechanics flow is smooth like melting butter (wat did I just say) Your art is way inspiring for me. Is this a compo entry? (I'm asking because there aren't any members listed)

I only wish it was longer, buy LD games seems destined to be short :Ç I'd really enjoy an expanded version of this game (with upgrades, maybe asteroids that cause effects on the little planet when you attract them).

Congratulations man (or woman)!

nofuel 2017-05-13 20:28

Funny challenging game! Great pixel art with beautiful colors! I really love the face expression of the planets! The controls feel very good! I only could not beat the other planet. A Healthbar for the other planet would be helpful! Overall very good polished game!

philomory 2017-05-14 07:46

Wow, that was _tough_, took several tries. I did beat it, though. It looks really good, too. Some audio would have been really nice, but other than that, good job! I could see this being a cool game to play on a tablet, if it was built out some.

csanyk 2017-05-14 22:46

This is great! I love the graphic style and the mechanics. It's challenging too. Just needs sound fx.

careface 2017-05-15 17:26

The pixel art is nice, parallax and animations aswell! Kinda expected more, you could easily add more easier smaller bosses or something before going to a big fight. overall, it was fun :)

garethiw 2017-05-17 20:32

Great idea, well implemented. The faces on the asteroids totally made this work!

Can't really add much more than has been said. Audio, healthbar and edge wrapping or collision would have been nice but it was fun regardless.

applejam 2017-05-18 15:06

Great game, playing with gravity is always fun :)

Your pixel art is awesome and faces on planets is adorable :P It was really hard to beat boss, but nevertheless, good job!

2017-05-24 15:10

Lovely graphics, cute game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reOMZ5szx64
