LD38 — A Small World

I Just Wanted Groceries by Jedeen 2017-05-02T02:24:48Z

This game is hilarious! You chose the right music for your theme, and your sprites are appropriately detailed and cute. I wished I could move faster sometimes while his lung lasted, but not being able to run away made it more suspenseful.

@certainly-canyon The artworks are stunning and eye-catching. I decided to check yours out because I was impressed with them. They are simplistic enough to feel clean, the wall and the doors are clear while sharing the same patterns, and the tone of the color looks just right. I would have loved to play the game, but I'm on Mac :( Good luck with the judging scores!

Oh, and update your cover image. It deserves to be seen.

Planet Desumaton by SiegfriedCroes 2017-05-01T17:07:27Z

I see what you did with the background 😃 I love the artwork and the gameplay! The faces are cute, and the game is difficult, in a good way.

Hamsterscape! by Dzik 2017-05-03T19:01:12Z

Nooooo another entry I really wanted to try but is Windows only :'( Judging from the gif, looks impressive that this was done in 3 days. Also very VERY nice artwork :)

A Week's Passing by iseeicy 2017-04-30T18:40:23Z

Alright, let’s do this. Starting your game now.

Heh, the paper thin character is cute. I wish cursor would become visible when intractable object is in line. Navigating around is fine, sometimes I get a prompt that says ‘press esc to show cursor’, but it easily disappears. Haha cracked up at - Learn - Second day came. Hmm I looked around in the class, then the teacher started talking and my vision is locked to the side ways….. oh, the news broke. The character is badass. Show must go on? For some reason, it wasn’t easy to ‘go to bed’. Wasn’t sure if this was part of the narrative or if it’s because I’m not clicking on the right spot? It will be so cool if it was part of the narrative. I love how what seemed like an ‘Objective’ is actually the guy’s stream of conscience. I still don’t know how to wake up, or maybe it got harder for him to wake up? Oooh, sitting in the back now, I see. Oops, typo in Friday’s dialogue. (You breifly consider doing today’s assignment)

Well, I ended up playing through the whole game. I struggled with interacting with objects in the beginning, but once I found the sweet spots I could live with them. I loved that the story was simple, down to the point, very well delivered, and concluded nicely at the end. I also liked the guy sitting in the back by the end of the week. It may be a small touch, but it shows that you cared about the details when writing the story. Although I do wish you would have picked up some random name for the teacher and *******. I’m not sure if you wanted to convey that it doesn’t matter who actually were ******* since they can be anyone around you, or if I’m over thinking it 😃 Anyways, great work!

Oh, I played it on the ‘experimental’ web version. I don’t think I encountered any issue that may be unique to this platform.

Recursive nightmare by Toulou 2017-04-30T19:05:15Z

Just as I was about to give up, I reached the end! It did take me a while to notice the inventory below, but once I did, I was trying out everything and was not disappointed. I wonder if I missed anything. Cool game.

Ark of the new world by jojocanard 2017-05-01T23:23:57Z

This is a very humorous game on every turn! I liked the slot machine layout on the top, creating anticipation for disaster. The game is quite chaotic, but that's what kept me focused. Very appropriate sound effects too :)

Statera by Kristian David 2017-05-02T03:52:50Z

I like the irony in your theme :) I wasn't sure what needs to be done until I saw the slimes quickly dominating the planet. I also thought the view was bit tight, but the little house(?) helped me keep the sense of where I was. I played your game on a Mac and I did hit the bug you mentioned where slimes are not moving around and one of the rhinos getting stuck at a tree. Not sure about the rhino, but the slime seems to practically stop moving when they reproduced the first time. They'll either stop, or move ever so slightly. I monitored it 4 times after I noticed it. Hope this helps.

Like you mentioned in the features not included due to time, this would have been more challenging if there were other factors distracting player, such as humans shooting at the player, forcing players to move around and loose track of whatever species they were monitoring. But great entry! :)

A Lighthouse Story by mhsco 2017-05-02T02:15:53Z

Your game is aesthetically pleasing :) Background music and water sound effects are pleasant, so is the light hearted artwork. I wonder if I tried all possible paths to the ending :)

I played the Mac version and didn't see anything apparently buggy.

Puchi Pooches by shru 2017-05-02T04:39:47Z

A dog collecting... chocolate...? That's cool! :D This was not as easy game as I though and it was fun playing it. It was challenging at first, but I'm glad you didn't have any guiding line for the bombs. The absence of it made it more stressful at times and fun as a result!

I'm pretty sure I heard some barking in the background music. Nice touch. The sprites are cute too. Looking at your previous entry, looks like you have a knack for drawing small animals. Keep up the good work.

Save the litle Planet! by igalencar 2017-05-02T07:13:23Z

This is a very good entry! Planets are very well designed, there is good amount of confusion in terms of direction as the game progresses (it's a good challenge), animations and effects are very well placed. And the music! It was well composed. Though it's repeating, it never felt boring. It somehow fits the tone of the game too. I did, however, find the screen too jittery, and a bug where the score/health bar couldn't find its place properly, but I'm just nip picking :) This is impressive work for 72 hours :D

The Last Colony by hekst 2017-05-01T21:39:19Z

Thank you guys! @jojocanard Different keyboard layout didn't occur to me until you mentioned it. Thanks for the input :)

The Last Colony by hekst 2017-05-03T18:42:12Z

@sun-wokong Sorry, I didn't release it because I don't have any windows machine or VM setup and I wanted to test the build before I released. You could try the web version of it, which I know for sure that it works on Chrome and Firefox. Let me know if you encounter any issues there :)

The Last Colony by hekst 2017-05-04T18:01:57Z

Heh, yeah. If I made the game start easier and had players learn the interface first then increase the difficulty this could have been easier to approach :p

The Last Colony by hekst 2017-05-06T03:40:28Z

@philomory Funny story, I actually increased the difficulty (ship control sensitivity and frequency of supplies and resource dissipation rate) right before I published because I thought it maybe too easy. It may have been true, but I think I couldn't find the sweet spot. I also didn't realized that I got good at the game while trying it out for 2~3 days :p @gurkenlabs made me realize that people wouldn't have time to look around the screen because I setup the game to start with low resources, on top of the fast paced gameplay.

About whether you've docked or not. Erm,, yeah, I realized that my UI for 'docked' light on the control panel may not be as visible and was hoping sound effect will help. (The DOCKED key changes its color) No indicator on the station itself aside, players may not have had time to look at the control panel for such status.

To be honest, I intended this game to be difficult. The concept of having to control four ships with all different sets of controls come from the flash game Multitask (http://www.kongregate.com/games/icylime/multitask). What @pkenney described is exactly how I wanted people to feel :D I would say I needed to increase the difficulty slowly (starting with fewer stations available? generous amount of resources at the start?), show people to see what's around and how the controls are, then get to the current difficulty. This way, I would have implemented the game how I wanted to, and introduced the game better to players. Thank you for your feedback :)

Ludum Dei by Zach Danz 2017-05-03T19:46:31Z

This is one of the most fascinating game I've played on LD38. I wasn't quite sure what I was doing in the very beginning so I was just messing around with the terrain, then there was fire :D I love the approach that you are the provider and they are the workers where you can't directly control what goes on in your world. This can easily become a subtle game with variety. (e.g. Lot more stone in this area? Higher stone castle.) This is a game I would love to play if it gets developed more :)

Music and the sound effect when clicking was nicely done as well. It fits the atmosphere. Sure, it was difficult to see at night, but once there were lots of activity going on, it seemed fine.

I'm pretty sure I saw one of the guys say something-ludum-daremus lol Great job :)

Glop Plots by Carsen D. 2017-05-01T22:06:01Z

Oh this is addictive :) I like the idea that I need to re-develop a cell as resource needs change over time. I think the gameplay could have been trickier if there were stronger 'conflict of interests' when harvesting resources, meaning more settings like Glop Grinder, where it uses 5 grasses for one glop. But for the short amount of time, you've setup something promising :D

Fat Rat by GameAttack 2017-05-03T18:52:08Z

Hahaha this is a cute game. The rat getting leaner was definitely a nice touch. The music is so catchy! I think this could have been a rhythm game too, where you get to jump according to the beat. I already used music as secondary indicator since it was speeding up with the wheel :)
