LD38 — A Small World

Space Balls by Dejvo 2017-05-03T09:35:45Z

It's an original idea, I've not seen anything quite like it (totally accidental pun). Great take on the theme, initially I found it difficult to control as I got caught by an atom and wasn't sure that my key presses were actually doing much but then I managed to break free. It was very satisfying skimming passed the atoms.

Visually it is interesting and has a nice feel to it, it was a clever idea to base it around spheres and that has allowed you to polish it nicely.

Improvements-wise it would be great if there was a bit more challenge to it, once you get in the flow it is quite easy. Also some more visual feedback when you press keys might assure the player that their actions are having the desired effect if they get caught in the pull of an atom. Others have mentioned adding visual feedback on the distance to the eye, and I agree with this.

Overall great work though!

Star Traveller by SecondDimension 2017-05-03T09:07:57Z

Thanks for the great feedback everyone!

@ithildin Unfortunately I don't think there will be a post-compo version. We enjoyed working on it but we have another project on that needs to take priority

Big Foot in Smalltown by urbanhelsing 2017-05-06T07:51:39Z

I tried so hard no to kill anybody, I just wanted to reach my socks!

I'm really jealous of your idea, it's the most innovative and interesting take on the theme that I've seen so far. Great fun, yes a bit too difficult but it has a lot of potential. It looks great too, good work!

Planet Desumaton by SiegfriedCroes 2017-05-06T08:01:05Z

There isn't much more that I can add to what others have said. It's a nice idea and an interesting take on the theme, I'd love to see it developed further. The graphics and animations are beautiful, I think this has lots of potential. Great work!

The Adventure of Malvin by NOFUEL 2017-05-06T07:36:35Z

As all of the other commenters have said, it's a great little game. The controls feel excellent, and that was reinforced by some lovely animation.

I encountered a bug (no pun intended) in the ant/termite hill, a couple of times I fell close to the bottom of a wall but managed to catch myself, however the screen stopped scrolling and when I managed to claw my way back to the top edge of the screen using wall jumping, it reset at the nearest checkpoint as if I had died. Anyway, that's a really minor thing. Great work, fantastic platformer.

Little Remains by nilead 2017-05-05T08:35:22Z

This is most definitely an ambitious game for 72 hours! Good job you had 3 excellent artists on board. The comments are already full of praise for the audio, mood and the art, and yes it most certainly is fantastic especially given the time limits. It is the design of everything and the detail that you've put into the world that grabs me.

In terms of controls, Grim Fandango is one of my favourite games so I'm certainly accustomed to direct control methods in adventure games. There is the classic problem of the controls getting flipped when you enter certain locations, such as getting the yellow pig and when you enter the Sky Speaker temple. It's a minor thing though.

In terms of criticism, it's just small issues such as the flipping of controls, and a few small spelling/grammar mistakes to be cleaned up. I love adventure games like this, with the creativity of the setting and character design.

I hit a couple of bugs that I'm noting if you're interested in working on the game more (won't affect my ratings): - If you select the credits screen, then select the instructions screen, the credits are displayed. If you go straight to the instructions screen first then you can see the instructions fine. - After calming the angry discarded temporarily, I went and spoke to the other discarded. When speaking to one of them (the furtherest on the left, in the screen with the angry discarded) it went into a dialogue loop that I couldn't seem to break out of.

Overall, I love this and am amazed by the amount of work that you've put into this. Stunning stuff.

Come on, barbarian! by uchiro 2017-05-08T08:20:28Z

I love seeing innovative and interesting ideas like this coming out of Ludum Dare, it's an original take on the theme, looks great and is very funny. I saw that you guys are continuing to work on this, which I think is a good idea, I'd like to see a gentler introduction to the fighting (I managed to win the first fight after a few goes but I think that might have been luck) and I'd like to see a bit of variety in the moves you can perform. Oh and the music is fantastic, fits brilliantly. Overall this is an amazing entry!

Planetoid Piracy by RobotSoulsGames 2017-05-05T09:01:51Z

Lovely idea! It works really well, you've already mentioned the lack of tutorial (and I'm glad you mentioned in the description about the land locked state) so I had some faffing about trying to figure out how everything worked, but that was fun in itself.

I enjoying sneaking up on other asteroids and taking them out from below. As others have mentioned it was a little easy, it seems like you guys probably know the main issues with the gameplay: ramp up the difficulty and introduce the core mechanics a bit better.

You have a great idea here though. I enjoyed the emergent nature of the gameplay, it was interesting to see different pirates attacking each other with no intervention from me.

The graphics are classic NES style pixel art, so nothing too groundbreaking but they fit the game well, and are clear and readable.

Seven Pillars by Jeremy Ryan 2017-05-08T08:45:39Z

Good work on your first Ludum Dare entry! I like the idea, well done on picking something achievable within the time limit but still interesting. I enjoyed playing it, the artwork was excellent. It was a bit disorienting as others have mentioned, but I do appreciate you coming up with an innovative control system.

Tiny Terraformer by Wheffle 2017-05-03T10:15:51Z

This is an excellent entry, it takes on the theme quite literally but does it well, everything works and there is enough challenge to make it fun. I enjoyed seeing the world transform, and it was great that the end game wasn't just win/lose (loved the review at the end of the game, I got 84%).

The graphics are simple but effective and clear. Audio-wise I would have liked more in the way of sound effects, particularly audio feedback when tasks are complete but I understand the limitations of Ludum Dare all too well.

The tutorial was great, I had absolutely no trouble playing and understanding the game. It was all very clear and well paced.

I was reading the previous comments regarding the player character being necessary or not. On one level I agree that it could work without this, but I personally like the direct control over the little character, it made me feel more connected to the game world and also gave an additional challenge when I was finding insects and fires to put out.

Overall, a very playable entry. Well done!

The Fleas In My Head by cenullum 2017-05-08T08:31:04Z

Your game is an original take on the theme, really interesting idea. I'm also very impressed that you made this in just 24 hours! It's difficult but still fun. As the other comments have mentioned, the gameboy visual style is great. Good work!

Hunting Frog by Indeximal 2017-05-19T16:54:18Z

As others have said, simple mechanics but fun. I'm not great at it, my best score was 21. I'd like more control over the jumping, so I can make more precise jumps, and the controls could be more snappy and responsive. It's really enjoyable though, and considering it is a 3D compo entry I think you have done incredibly well!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Policeman from Mukhosransk by BloodJohn 2018-12-16T13:44:38Z

An ambitious idea for sure, I found it difficult to navigate as others said - the arrows seemd to move around a lot and I couldn't work out where I was supposed to be heading. I got stuck on a hill at one point as well. Good on you all for trying to do a full 3D game with car physics in such a short space of time! You've made a really good start, the driving mechanics and controls are fun.

Effigies by Geckoo1337 2018-12-14T07:49:03Z

Curse those purple snakes! Very nice entry, well designed and polished. I particularly liked the audio and style of the game. The theme gets a little bit lost but I understand where the idea links in. I didn't mind the slow movement speed, thought it just added to the feel of it.

Bunnycula by pcmaster 2018-12-14T08:35:04Z

I was a little confused initially but I picked it up quickly enough and didn't find it particularly hard. It was a funny idea and I liked the mood of the whole thing, I agree with other comments about the blocky models - totally fine and quite charming. There isn't too much in the way of mechanics but in the time constraints that is understandable. Nicely done!

Upsystem by terryg 2018-12-14T08:45:53Z

I was a bit lost as well to begin with but got the hang of the game in the end. I liked the concept and enjoy games like FTL a lot. Could just do with some more polishing but it was fun and I really liked the atmosphere.

Redshirt Air-Patrol by GettingRekt 2018-12-14T08:25:56Z

Unusual take on a defence game. I did, like others, find it a little bit confusing at the start but I think there is the core of something really interesting and fun here, it just needs some more polish and a few more meaningful choices in the game play. Good work!

The last outpost by Istalri 2018-12-16T13:37:46Z

Nice entry, I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said in the previous comments. I think balancing out the level 10 difficulty spike would be good, up until that point I'd created a pretty invincible ring of archers. I think there needs to be more incentive to keep experienced units, certainly in the earlier stages of the game it didn't feel like a hard choice to sacrfice - a bit more risk/reward with the central mechanic would be compelling. A good idea though and I'd like to see it developed further.

OVERCHARGE by Jonas Tyroller 2018-12-14T08:00:41Z

Excellent entry, great way to incorporate the theme into an established genre to create something that feels quite different. The whole thing is nicely polished, introducing new elements with each level. I'd like to see this developed further.

LD44 — Your life is currency

Jailocorp by jaywoody 2019-05-18T16:42:49Z

Overall a very polished entry given the time limit, much like a lot of players I found the compo version too challenging but I faired a bit better on the post-compo one. I think the key is (as others have mentioned) feedback, just knowing that I'm on roughly the right track boosts my motivation and helps me to complete puzzles. It is nigh impossible to get that kind of balancing done in the compo though. You've done a great job given the time limit and the post-compo version is going in the right direction.

Bruisness, Business that Packs a Punch by nate_wec 2019-05-18T16:12:35Z

It was fun to play, and amusing. I think it would have been good if you'd managed to get the fighting game working, worth revisiting in future. I like the animation and mad art style too.
