Very cool and sweet looking platformer with a cool sliding mechanic :)

for-science 2017-04-28 15:05

The pixel art and animations are awesome! It took a moment to get used to the controls but once I got the hang of it it felt really nice. I only wish the wall jump was little easier to pull of. It worked fine but the higher walls had me falling down three or four times. Which got frustrating after a while.

king-kujito 2017-04-30 19:25

Looks very good. Unfortunately I can't play this on my mac :-(

boltkey 2017-04-30 19:33

I almost forgot how I loved the classic core platformer action! Very nice execution.

Great graphics!

It was a bit frustrating that the whole "world" restarted upon losing all hearts.

tinyworlds 2017-04-30 19:43

Looks great, the itch.io page is beautiful! Sadly I can't play it :( Is it possible to release a Linux/Web version?

xxdoombox 2017-05-01 01:37

WOW fantastic game!!! bravo! the movement feels great, the animations are good, all of the art is so loveable. the level design was what made this game so fun. your level design is the best of any game i have tested so far. i appreciate that the levels were designed to reward the player for sprinting and flowing through sections. there was rhythm to the gameplay which is what i love so much about good platformers. the wall run was a great addition as was the slide attack. i was surprised by the length of meaningful gameplay that you were able to include in such a short amount of time. i would love to play more levels, should you decide to continue working on this post-jam!

cambryx 2017-05-01 10:29

This is a great game. It took me a while to get used to the controlls. Especially the wall jumping was not that easy for me. But I had a lot of fun playing this

It would be nice, if you took the time to judge our game ;)

Very impressive game! [Graphics] - The highlight, the graphics and colors(!) are super cute and high polished. Looks like a game that could be on steam, maybe just a bit more details would be nice but hey.. game jam! Also the animations are superduper cute. [Music & SFX] - Also very well done! The music is fun and kind of pushing/uplifting. The sound effects are very on point. [Gameplay] - The game is not super easy. There is a skill/learning curve you have to master but after that I was able to play the game very well. What I "discovered", it is possible to wall jump a wall up to the top. (Keep the direction to the wall pressed and then just press jumpjumpjump). Needs some time but I was able to skip a part of the level, not sure if that was on purpose. The gameplay is a lot of fun, I have to say! Jumping on enemies is very satisfying :)

Really good job, there is a lot of potential for this game to become a very fun platformer!

eric-florio 2017-05-02 04:41

Wow, the animations are great (and cute)!!! Very impressive art style.

The wall jump is a little awkward tho (just a little) And the level design is a bit repetitive.

arcticmattekar 2017-05-02 18:01

I love the art and animation. I had problems jumping high walls though.

Nice game!

sachos345 2017-05-02 18:12

This has to be the best game i have played so far, amazing graphics sound and the gameplay is the best, once you get used to it you feel soo good sliding around and jumping like a god. Took me like 4 or 5 tries to beat the final boss. I did not have trouble with the wall jumping, in fact it was the easiest to me.

thor 2017-05-02 21:45

This was absolutely wonderful. Super cute and the platforming felt really good. My favorite part was how you would run up the wall when you sprinted and jumped into it. It really made the platforming feel much better at times.

silkworm-sweatshop 2017-05-02 22:00

Nice platformer! Controls and feels really good to play. Pixelart looks great too!

nickavv 2017-05-02 22:46

This is so awesome. The graphics are beautiful, and the gameplay feels so fluid. I love the segments where you can build up speed and power through multiple obstacles without ever stopping. Great work

superpokeunicorn 2017-05-03 02:09

Oh boy, do I love me some good platforming, and hot dang is this platforming good! I have to say, the game feel is spot on; the controls are natural and responsive, controls being the most important aspect of any platformer. It just felt good to run and jump around, which is the first thing any platformer needs to accomplish. The pitter patter of the character's feet also really added to the game feel. The art is minimalist, but functions well for what it means to convey. Man, I really just like this one. Great job!

ryte2byte 2017-05-03 18:17

Looks neat, but I'm not coordinated enough to handle the wall-run jumps in the first level :(

lipsch 2017-05-03 19:30

I used a controller as you recommanded. Normaly im not very good in doing stuff with a controller :p But this Time it worked! (: The game felt great. Good polish. Couldn't find any bugs or anything. Very cute sounds and graphics. like that style (: Cool that you made all that stuff in 48 hours. Good work!

tommyflower 2017-05-03 19:44

Nice game!! Ok it took me ages to go over the first long gap :D but I loved the short note she leaves at the beginning, the simple but effective backround, the smooth and interesting gameplay. One of the best platformer I0ve tried. The music is great, I expecially like that. Good job!!

cerno-b 2017-05-03 20:01

Lovely little game! I adore the graphics, and you pulled off a whole bunch of game mechanics very nicely. Great job on the level progression! The way the player learns that slide can knock out enemies or that you need to run in order to jump far are very well thought out. I also enjoyed how you built tension by first traveling to the anthill and then enter it for a change of atmosphere. Nice nod to Mario Bros on the boss, I also liked the way you introduced it with some heavy screenshake when the game was very toned down on the special effects before that. Gives the sudden shake all the more impact.

The music is good, albeit a bit repetitive, and for my taste you should really consider creating a closed loop. This very nice talk gives some insight on the matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WoepccKGSI

The section about loops is at the 19:00 mark.

With respect to the controls, I think the wall-jump could have been a bit tighter, I kept sliding off a lot.

As for gameplay in general, not much to criticize, as I said above, but one thing put me off a bit, and that is your design choice of lives and checkpoints. So hitting an enemy reduces a life, but falling down a hole doesn't, that's a bit inconsistent but nothing I haven't seen before. Now falling into a hole resets you to the last checkpoint with the current amount of lives left, but losing the lives resets you to the start of the game? That was a bit confusing. The classic approach would have worked better I think: Fall in a hole and be reset in front of the hole with one life lost, hit by an enemy loses one life. All lives lost resets you to the last checkpoint.

All in all it was a very atmospheric little game that I enjoyed to play despite minor nitpicks.

drestuff 2017-05-03 20:05

A fast paced and really cute platformer! I think if there's any critique I would give it is that you should have lerped the camera according to the direction the player object is moving so that it doesn't lag behind, that is to say when player object is moving the camera is always looking slightly ahead of the player object. Other than that I liked it! Oh and that slide was just too cute! :beetle:

faemir 2017-05-03 20:30

Great graphics, cute use of the theme and satisfying gameplay. I was very pleased with the slide! I got lost a few times on where to go next, but this could have been me rather than a camera issue. fantastic entry.

luis-antonio 2017-05-03 22:15

Adorable game! 9/10

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-05-04 20:33

Thx to your webgl link we were finally able to test your game, and it was just super great, congratulations ! The graphics are beautiful, love your little character and the animations are lovely. The gameplay is great, the level design, the references and the polishing of the whole thing is pretty amazing.

The wall jump is a bit tricky though, the required orientation of the character in direction of the wall created for us a difficult timing to learn and was a slightly infuriating pattern. Allowing to wall jump when you just flipped and have the wall in your back would be appreciable.

Just rated, much love, bravo !

nbilyk 2017-05-04 22:48

Impressive! Hard to believe all that was done in a weekend. When I got to the second half I was pretty shocked to see that you guys had time for a second stage. I won't spoil the game for others, but the ending... bravo! My favorite game so far.

tat2tim 2017-05-04 23:01

Adorable game! I had a little trouble getting the wall jump mechanic to work consistently though.

samlo 2017-05-05 04:24

Awesome game! I played the whole thing, love the ending. It has really really good pacing/difficulty curve! I also really liked the platforming controls once I got the hang of them. If you keep working on it, maybe try making the wall jump a bit stickier (think Super Meat Boy), as it's a bit difficult to get the timing down at first.

funkensteins-monster 2017-05-05 05:37

The level design here is surprisingly good for the time limit you had. I agree with the poster above about the wall jump being a bit stickier but other than that the game plays well. I wish the camera showed a bit more of whats in front of the player because the first boar hit me before I could even see it. I loved the boss and ending though. Fantastic reference. Nice job!

siryakko 2017-05-05 06:33

Wow that a nice pixel art looking game right here. The mechanics are really smooth and enjoyable. Simple but efficient thanks

dunin 2017-05-05 12:56

Not original but fast and fun game!

My hand hurt after so many wall jump...

also, I get stuck in a slide and the "r" button restart from the beginning, I was hoping I came back to the last checkpoint...

morrilet 2017-05-05 18:00

This was incredible. I started out with the keyboard controls, but about 2 minutes into the first area I had to switch. Gamepad is **way** better. The art and audio are great, and I cracked a smile when I saw the end. Very cute, and very fun. My only complaint is that it was a little frustrating jumping platform to platform in the last area. I felt like I should've been able to jump, but kept falling before I could jump. Maybe add a frame or two where you can still jump after falling from a platform? Also, I only died once near the end, and was glad that it just restarted the area, not the whole game. Anyway, this was really well done. Solid game with tried and true mechanics and a cute story. Great work.

nuebomundo 2017-05-05 23:04

A pretty nice platformer with heavy Mario influences (mostly theme-wise), although your little ladybug is way more athletic! I loved the fact that you can run on walls, but unfortunately it wasn't really crucial for any part of the level.

I felt like the levels were a little bit too broad, is impressive that you manage to design so much in so little time, but I would argue that a more condensed layout, with more focus in the mechanics and less in plain platforming, would have really hit the sweet spot.

The boss battle was a nice little touch!

adamd 2017-05-06 07:36

As all of the other commenters have said, it's a great little game. The controls feel excellent, and that was reinforced by some lovely animation.

I encountered a bug (no pun intended) in the ant/termite hill, a couple of times I fell close to the bottom of a wall but managed to catch myself, however the screen stopped scrolling and when I managed to claw my way back to the top edge of the screen using wall jumping, it reset at the nearest checkpoint as if I had died. Anyway, that's a really minor thing. Great work, fantastic platformer.

blackrose 2017-05-06 11:54

Its a really good game! i love platform games. In pc its a little bit dificult to play wit a keyboard, but its really fun and i like the graphics ^^ Congratulations

aeveis 2017-05-06 17:04

Nice game! I didn't have a gamepad on me so I used keyboard. I think the wall jump timing was a bit too precise for me, sometimes if felt like the jump didn't detect (like around the third wall jump or so). I think the first level there were some spots where I wasn't sure if there was a landing leaf/spot, I guess either there would have to be better camera control or hints that there can be somewhere to land (either in the art or closer tile placement). I did like the wall run though, helped things go a bit faster.

The spiders in the 2nd level were the hardest obstacle for me. The spacing was at a distance that wasn't the usual dash jump distance, and hitting them and losing a heart was pretty painful. Though it was doable so maybe just more of a rampup with easier spider placement first perhaps (like one with more natural jump distance spacing or just having one over a large hole)?

Also story and boss wise I guess was a homage/ref to Mario? Anyway overall nice quick platformer game!

doppelgunner 2017-05-07 02:20

I didn't finish the game it took me a long time though to give up. Good job for making a nice game.

powerspark 2017-05-07 20:06

Great game with outstanding graphics. I was able to use keyboard pretty fine after getting used to it. The run key seemed odd to me and wall jumping was hard to learn initially. I really wish the slide mechanic was used more as it's really the good *unique mechanic*... unfortunately it seemed like the game was too focused on platforming on leaves rather than sliding into enemies. Also, enemies themselves could have incorporated the sliding more. I think introducing the spiders over a deadly pit was kinda unfair too, maybe give a safe environment for that kind of learning. I thought the boss should have shot some sort of projectile or been more challenging. Overall your art is incredible and I like the feel/mood :D

chunkybrewster 2017-05-07 22:26

Looks amazing and controls pretty great. Love the simple visuals, the wall jumping works pretty well, and a bug's life is a nice take on the theme. Great job with this!

rujo 2017-05-10 09:09

i love the super smooth and clean pixel art, it also play very well.. great job!

thiagowaw 2017-05-10 14:53

I love your game 10/10 The clean pixel art style is realy cool. I mostly liked the mechanics of jumping on the walls and roling, feels like sonic + megamen xD Great job!

I made a game in pixelart too, thas my Compo entry :D https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/space-honey-the-adventure-of-little-bee

parkdraws 2017-05-11 08:37

bug.gif

I got stuck! (/。\)゚。 I'm glad the scene change button was left in.

The wall run and slide animations are cute as heck.

brotherst 2017-05-13 14:51

Agreed with parkdraws. Cute as heck. The spin animation especially, I could watch that loop for hours ^.

Art style is great, you've done so much with so few pixels and colours, really makes me question why I went for fulling rigged 60fps 3D models XD. BGs are great, loving little credit scene at the end too. Wall jumps could do with a little delay, so you can just a fraction of a second after you've changed directions. Feels counter-intuitive to jump into the wall and then change direction. Otherwise the controls felt great! I played on gamepad as suggested.

Great game dude!

If you'd like to check out ours it's over here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/e-at

Thanks!

2017-05-13 17:25

Lovely graphics, though I found the wall jump a bit annoying. I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dPr-ubTa3k

harry-alissavakis 2017-05-13 22:31

Great game! The controls are really good and tight (I especially liked the wall sliding) and the graphics look super cute! It's really great that you took the time to polish it that much, I very much appreciated the small subtle details (like the dust particles when walking). It's a really well made and fun game, and it's amazing that you did it alone in such little time! Well done! :D

gfm 2017-05-13 23:54

Really cute game! However, I must criticize some of the controls:

* The character should stick to the wall for a while, so holding toward the opposite direction (before a wall jump) wouldn't make you fall * Sliding seemed really fun and cute, but made you lose speed too quickly. Therefore, I avoided using it as much as possible. :slight_frown: * The camera takes too long to move behind the player, sometimes.

The wall run mechanic was quite fun, though!

ellian 2017-05-14 12:06

How did you make that in such a short time?! Music is super catchy (even if it's a bit simple), controls are really tight, and it's suuuuper fun to play! I wish the wall run would last longer; the level of polish and details is really good, and that dumb little boss at the end was a fun thing. Overall, man, I'm amazed you did all this over a weekend. Congratulations!

gurkenlabs 2017-05-14 12:18

Awesome art and matching sound effects. The music was cool but maybe not exactly matching the theme of the game. I had one major issue: The game was way too fast on my machine, making it almost impossible to get the (double-) jump timings correctly which was a shame because after a lot of tries I had to give up. It seems like you might have some kind of game loop issue, because in the gifs, the game seems to be appropriately fast.

siegfriedcroes 2017-05-19 16:06

Absolutely love this game. Already knew I'd like it by seeing the screenshots ;) I really like the pixel art graphics and the game just felt great to play. Reminded me of Mario with the 2nd level being underground and the way you had to kill the boss at the end ;)

All in all a fantastic entry! Well done :)

devpaul 2017-05-19 19:57

Wow nice job ! This is better than most Jam games I have played. Level design on the first stage was kind of confusing, and maybe the music was a little repetitive but otherwise this is a perfect little game.

2017-06-07 22:46
