Duck Pond by handCraftedRadio 2013-12-18T20:33:00
Heh. A fun little fast-paced game. So hard to keep those ducks alive not to mention yourself as well!

Wow.. This has been, so far, the best game I've played in this compo. Seriously. Congratulations. It was spectacular and I'd love to see more levels, if possible. ;)
Interesting game, but the controls were, honestly, very difficult to grab... and then there was the mysterious "I won?" Not sure how that happened. :P
Pretty cool little game. Only issue I had with it was being inside the tents and still getting hit by meteors. It killed me and broke the game.. I'll play some more later.
Interesting game.. I think I ran into an unusual bug, though. On my first playthrough I didn't even see the other driver. Just the red tentacles. I picked the gun (when I read the choices I thought you got both for some reason).
Man... driving like that in the darkness is terrible. Again, cause of the bug, I didn't die. Instead I sort of raced tendrils and went out of my mind trying to find a way to the manor...
Came here to comment, realized you could choose the lantern, played again and it was much better.. Could see and the Horror showed up that time. Pretty interesting game, though the handling of that dune buggy was horrid. :P
Interesting game.. Hard to track where you used the theme, though.
I don't know if this may be the case, but make sure you have the most recent version of Java. It ran on my PC fine and I use Linux (despite the game being marked for windows, heh heh).
Pretty interesting concept. The flashlight seemed a little finicky, though. And so many aliens. XD
Pretty cool game, man! I don't know if you did this on purpose or not, but did you know that if you reset after hitting a block it saves your movement velocity? (Touch a block, hold r, let go, you move as if you had just hit the arrow block.)
Hmm.. I get an error when trying to run the game. A "cabinet is not valid" error. Then again, I am trying to run it in WINE. :P Oh well. It looked interesting.
HILARIOUS. Loved it. I did find a little glitch, though. If you stand immediately adjacent to something that your bullet will hit, you basically have a machine gun. It'll fire continuously and immediately practically tearing apart those aliens. :P (Also you can stand on their heads. XD )
Aw man.. Really looked interesting... Wish they'd get a unity web player for Linux working already..
I liked it. Pretty interesting. I played through and got the Good Ending on the first run. I may have to play again and look for the others.
Hmm.. Looked interesting.. sadly I find downloading libraries to be a real pain, especially if you have to hunt to find out which ones you need. I'm gonna have to pass on this one.
Interesting game. Had a lot of FPS lag for some reason.. Not quite sure. Played it twice.
I like it quite a lot. Only issue is that it's really, really difficult to move and control the camera once you get really big.. I'd get up to 5 times my size and the camera would swing wildly when trying to aim. Other than that, it's pretty awesome!
"OH NO!"
Pretty cool, though the window was too big to display on my screen all at once, but I managed to play it, still. Pretty cool. :3
Pretty fun little game. A little confusing what disease or weapon you have, but it was overall a nice game. Shoulda been some sort of ending when you beat the dog instead of the game continuing indefinitely. (Or did I miss the ending somehow?)
Heh heh. I loved it. Pretty fun to play. Had to go through and do all the options. And it was very, very funny. :P
Heh.. Pretty fun to play... greed consumed me. XD Would have loved to see what else would happen, but I was not going through all that again. XD
Nice little game. It was fun to play. :)
Yea, we ran out of time. We wanted to make the platforms move you, and intend to have it so when we finish the post-compo version. And it was the collision detection that took up most of our time and it still came out buggy. XD
Thanks for the comments, guys. Glad it's been enjoyed a little. :)
"Leertaste"? Hmm. Quite interesting. Getting the name of a key using the Java keyCode methods yields translated names depending on what's the system language you're using... Heh heh. I agree, though. Those platforms are really annoying... And thanks. :)
Yea, we didn't make it to friction sadly. Platform movement probably wasn't thought too much through by my bro. And that first switch is a little antagonizing.
That being said, a game-breaking bug was fixed that prevented you from even being able to finish the final level so hopefully you'll be able to beat this demo (almost typed demon :P ) now. :P
I liked it.. but yea.. The World of Dreams was ridiculously tough.. As others have said you had to be lucky. Also, I couldn't be the game as it crashed twice. The first time on loading the World of Mystery, and the second time on loading the World of Speed. I don't know why as it completely froze my computer when it did so I had to hard boot.. twice. But yea.. It was still interesting.
You, sir, deserve a cookie. One of the best games I've played yet!
Aww... I wanted to play this... But it's Unity Web and the Unity Web Player isn't available on Linux. :( Gonna upload ports?
Woo! That was fun! :D I had a bug at some points where it wouldn't let me turn the camera all the way to the left or right. To fix I needed to turn a 360. Not sure if that's a linux only problem, but yea. :P
AND THEY WAVE! D'AWWWWWW... :3
And... how did you know I was supposed to be sleeping right now? :P
Pretty cool. My only qualm is that I couldn't tell which traps were attacking what enemies. Would have been nice to see something indicating they were working.. I was worried at first that they weren't doing anything. :P (Oh.. and a way to tell the level of the upgrade would have been useful, too.)
The game started off running very, very slow. Then, after the first WAIT command it crashed trying to get a sound file. It seems to be a similar error to what happened in another Game entry on here: Saving Gray. It's complaining about not being able to get the sound file or open the line for playing audio. Maybe you can speak to the team who worked on Saving Gray to see how they solved their problem..
But, other than that, I liked that you included instructions for making your own maps and configuring the game. Looked pretty cool. Now if only the FPS wasn't terrible. :P
Cool game, but was very laggy for me for some reason.. not sure why.
Interesting game.. now if only I could kill the dragon... :P
I wanted to play this.. but I'm getting a ton of errors. The game appears to run, but there's no sound, and it gets to the title screen and doesn't accept user input. It is updating and there's an FPS counter, but no matter how hard I slam the Spacebar it won't start. Sucks too. This game looked awesome.
I DO have log files for you if you want me to send them to you. There's some sort of issue with the audio code, I believe, as most of the errors are coming from the IcedTea toolkit complaining about not being able to open the line for the pulseaudio connection.
But yea... I really wanted to play this! >.<
WOO! That was awesome! I loved the concept. I had the most fun trying to combine demon cats with devil dogs to get them to leave me alone. :P Also.. I may have found a little bit of a glitch with the Linux version (maybe with the Windows one as well), but eventually I just decided to grab every shield and activate it. After about the third level I was practically invincible. :P
*SPOILERS*
@Yoni There is an ending.. if you keep playing you'll notice that things begin to "gray". :D :P
Interesting.. Not really sure what I was supposed to do.. that and when I noticed astroids spawning on my planet it became a little tiresome.. additionally.. I couldn't use the third and fourth item.. only the first for some reason.
Well that was... fun. :P Don't really see the relation to the theme, but I did see the special effects! :P
Very nicely done. I would love to see more of this with a lot more puzzles. When I solved the first one my first thought was "Oh, that's clever..." Great work!
Nice little game. I got to 70 and things got hectic. :P
Looks cool. Definitely would like to play a finished version.. but a Linux port would be nice. :P
Ha hah! That was awesome! I just had to play it when I saw the planet's wonderful mug. Controls are a little iffy cause you swing all over the place, but it was fun! Great job! :D
Interesting little game. Would have been nice if there was a way to "beat" it, but still. Way better than my first entry (which didn't even make it to the posts. :P )
I can haz Linux version? :P
Aww... looked fun, but WINE seems to have trouble launching it. Complains about a corrupted cabinet file. Oh well.
Nice game.. can't rate it though.. I couldn't play for more than two seconds before I couldn't take the lag anymore.. :P But then again I'm running it in WINE and don't have the best of computers...
One thing I would change, though, is the start screen. A way to skip the long intro text would be nice. I tried switching to another window while waiting only to discover the game pauses if it doesn't have the focus... Yea...
So many options.. making me have to go back and choose them all... such text and storyline.. full of suspense. Here... cookies to you, sir.
Would love to play this.. but I kinda can't because of Unity WebPlayer not working on Linux. Can I haz Linux build? :P
Well that.. was something. XD Had a bit of fun for the time I played it. I think it's a little too easy to die, though. :P Still, would play again. :P
And videos, in my opinion, are not the solution for those who can't play the game. The dev should make ports. That's a more proper solution.
Sadly I can't play. It doesn't seem to want to run on my version of mono, and I can't upgrade to >=3 since I'm on an old version of Ubuntu. Oh well. :P
Pretty cool game! Had fun playing it! ^^
Wow... just.. wow.. BEST GAME I'VE PLAYED YET! Woooh! SOOOOOOOO MUCH FUN. :P
I did find an interesting little glitch where I could get more than one mean astronaut and connected planet at a time. I tried to get a whole bunch of them going... but then the HORDE showed up and there was just so many I was forced to spin in circles and constantly fire to drive them off...
(And the little astronaut popping his head up at the controls screen was gold. I only which I could give this 6 stars. XD )
Fun game, but man! That's unforgiving! The only thing I really don't like is that, for whatever reason, your character decides that the best thing to do when hit is about face... really makes it easy for the enemies to just bludgeon you to death.
Also, it would have been nice have the dash bound to a key so you only dash when you want to. Still.. I'll play it more later.. when I'm willing to throw myself on swords again. :P
That was quite fun! Difficult.. but fun! I have to ask, though, did you intend for the worlds to get out of sync depending on how you moved around? It caught me off guard and made me lose a few times. :P
Couldn't play cause it doesn't work in WINE properly.. Still, the audio sounds friggin' awesome. So discordy and stuff.
Ha! I love it! Took me a bit to figure out how to progress quickly. First time I just up and died.. The second I realized I could select "Gather Water" push 5, and watch my little dudes run around and collect a ton of agua. :P
It was interesting how you implemented resource regain physics with them growing in sort of a "spore" format and expanding depending on existing resources.
Still.. I wish it had gone on a little longer.. I suddenly won. :P
Pretty cool game. Kinda hard to hit those drones sometimes, but definitely fun.
Interesting game. Really difficult, though, but that's part of the fun! :D :P
Pretty cool! Took me a while to realize you could use satellites for maintaining connections. It was difficult to get them to stay where you wanted to. Maybe add in an estimated orbit for the satellite during launch so you could fine tune the launch.
Pretty cool, though!
Fun little game. Took a while, but I had to keep playing till I got all the endings. :P
Interesting game. Some fun glitches in there too. :P Some not so fun ones as well, though. :S Still.. I beat it! (Only cause I realized I could just skip past all the graves and go to the ones on the far end. XD )
Heh. Pretty cool. Definitely more innovative when it comes to the theme.
Interesting game.. only issue is something should have happened if you fell off to your doom. A reset would have been nice.
Interesting game. Only issue I had was the window was too small. It cut off some text, too.
@JordanFitz: Ya. The walking is a little funky cause of some code I was trying to fix. Hopefully the post-compo version will have that worked out.
@Docjekyll Game crash? Do you have the error report? I'd like to fix it if I could. :P I thought I had all the crash bugs ironed out.
@Trilby The player doesn't move for you when the button is held down? I tested it on Ubuntu and WinXP and the player does indeed move when you hold the button down. It gets "reset" when you change dimensions, but you should be able to move continuously if you hold the button down. ... And yay! I'll play it as soon as I can. :)
And thanks for all the comments, guys!
@Docjekyll I've been notified by some friends that the Door Crash / OutofBounds bug managed to get through. That's probably why it crashed for you. I've fixed it so if you wanna give it another go, have at it! :D
@TeamQuadratic Could you describe the controls problem to me? Others were telling me there were some unusual issues like with keypresses not reacting, but I haven't seen anything of the kind... Would love to get some feedback on why they're so horrendous as I can't see any problems on my end on the two systems I've tested it on.
@Budaniel Thanks. Yea, the block by block might push some people away, but Collision Detection was just so much easier if the player was grid-bound so I went with it. :P
Thanks for your comment, FrankieSmileShow. I've thought most of what you've said and am working on fixing up a good bit of the problems. The clunky movement and lack of feedback on item usage is being fixed. I don't have the Post-Compo version done yet.. and I'm a week over when I wanted to have it through, but it is on its way!
Probably not, masterhyjinx. You probably walked through one of the oscillating dark fountains. They remove your power. To regain it you need to walk through the yellow fountain. (The Post-Compo version.. which is STILL in development :( ... tells you this. )
SPACE GATE! Will have to play more later.. Mind is wandering at the moment. :P
Well.. that was a game. Really, really, really hard to beat. Cool idea, but I think black holes are too powerful. Additionally, the arrow that supposedly points to home doesn't update. (I'm on linux.) By pure luck I ended up flying into Earth once and discovered that the arrow was not pointing in the direction of home. Glad I figured that out quickly.
Really cool concept. My high score was around 30k.. I was gonna try to beat daveh and make it to 100k, but a few "features" got a bit antagonistic and one just made it not fun anymore.
The first: not being allowed to get offscreen for a moment. I could understand not getting too far away, and maybe it's just my take on it, but maybe allowing the player to hop a little offscreen would be okay because some of the fish would be really near the edge. This one was a bit annoying, but not that really..
The most annoying thing was the bigger fish spawning on top of me... After it happened three times I gave up. They should definitely not be allowed to spawn near you inside a certain range so that there's no instant-death the moment you eat a smaller fish. It's really annoying to just have executed a quick-grab of a meal and then a bigger fish spawns on you and you lose. (You can even see the bigger fish still growing in the frozen screenshot.)
Other than that, it was a nice game. I would keep playing but that spawn "feature" got a little antagonistic. :P
Nifty little game. I really like the graphics style. Was very easy, but it was still fun.
Wow.. amazing game. Luckily, it runs in WINE decently since the web version is terrible. (Lags so badly...) Sooo many things about this game. First, a few bugs (that may or may not have been because of WINE... I looked at the source but no make file meant I couldn't even attempt to build it myself. :P ).
Firstly, When dying on Hard Mode and starting right back up the game says I have 0 lives and all my score from my previous attempt. If I die once, though, all my score (including whatever I gained on that second playthrough) is lost and my lives are set back to 3.
Second, and it might have just been me, but the snake seems unresponsive at times.. Especially when trying to do tight maneuvers back to back (like in that one hallway that killed me three times and I needed to take a break; I'll beat this eventually :P ). It might have been intended to be like this, but it's a little disappointing when he doesn't turn like you tell him to.
Now, the great stuff. The gameplay is addictive and awesome. I was worried it would have been a little boring because it's just "Snake", but the infinite twist makes it very, VERY fun. And then there's the music.. I love how it changes slowly as you progress.
All-in-all and AWESOME game. I'll just need more time before I can beat it on Hard mode. (Easy is too boring. :P )
@mockthebear
Ah.. code::blocks ... I recently started working with someone on a C++ project who uses that IDE... took me forever to get a build going because I had to manually set up the build environment on my end. I definitely prefer makefiles. :P
Still.. an awesome game... and I will beat it!! :P
Nice game! I was a little disappointed that my score seemed so low.. and then I noticed that apparently 10 is the highest anyone's gotten.. so my 6 seems a little less cruddy now. :P
The only thing I'd say is the homing physics of the yellow and red objects seem a little too overpowered.. It's far easier to get crushed by five yellows (and a soul-crushing red :P ) then it is to dodge them... eventually I figured out just holding left or right is the solution. :P
Still, it was quite fun to play... and runs great in Firefox on Linux! :D
Cool game.. Crashed when I died. I'm assuming it's a WINE error.. Anyways, it was a little interesting, the movement mechanic. Like someone said above, the ship is really spinny when trying to turn and such.
I'd also suggest a bigger view so you'd be able to react to meteors better. They're pretty hard to dodge when they're suddenly on screen. :P
Lastly, and yours wasn't the first, but when you package your game to send to others who are playing maybe name it something other than "LD34.zip". Kinda hard to keep track of all these games when they're all named the same. :P
Can't launch the Linux version. Crashes immediately on startup.. If I had to guess the problem I'd bet it was my out-of-date integrated graphics.
Looks good... but my crappy integrated graphics can't run it... The linux version also crashes on start for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Sorry. :P
Hey. Wish I could play, but I get the following exception when I run the game. Looks like you're doing something with your sound that's not working properly:
http://pastebin.com/YVhtZUtC
Cool game. And the linux build does work, but I feel I should let you know that the web player version (i.e. post compo version) does NOT work on linux.. so as much as I'd like to play the web version because I see you've implemented a few of the recommendations I thought of (i.e. speed increase) I can't because Unity is being lazy when it comes to linux web player development... Don't know if we'll ever get it or not.
I can also see that some of the other things I thought of are on your todo list.. that's good. :)
Anyways, the game is really cool.. though once I got to 60000 score it became too slow to play on the 1.1 version.. I don't know if this was intentional, but as you got bigger it'd be cool if your icon changed as well. So when you reached meteor size you looked like a meteor, etc.
Lastly.. I don't know what "star size" is as I don't recall seeing any stars.. unless one of those planet looking things were stars. :P
And don't let know one put you down for the music.. I liked it. :P
Yea... the 1080p rendering sucked on my computer. Made the game very laggy. Also, rendering in views of other players when playing singleplayer (i.e. by yourself) added a lot of unnecessary lag for an older computer like mine.
Other than that it was pretty cool.
The Journal of an Unnamed Soldier:
"Day (Wave) 55, they just keep coming.. But I think we'll be alright. They were slow to arrive, but now they leave almost instantly. I... don't even know what to do with myself anymore.. I don't even have to fire.. Somehow, amidst all this fighting for survival... I've become a mechanic.
Some 300 or so turrets later and all I do is spend my time watching them explode.. It was tough at first. Running around.. getting them off the island as soon as possible.. now I can't even make it to them before they're gone.
I suppose I should find something to eat... Haven't really had anything all this time... I'd plant some crops.. but it seems like I'm just growing turrets at this rate... I wonder how wrought iron tastes....."
So, yea. A fun game. I would definitely recommend balancing it a bit. For the last 30 waves at least I just went and did other things while waiting for cash to build up.. Then I placed more turrets. :P
Maybe make it so that infection didn't reset at the end of a wave? Then buying percent resets would be a must. I bought a killall once... was a waste of money. :P Would have been better to make turrets. :P
Oh, and think you have a bug in your projectile code. I can't help but notice if I point in any quadrant other than Quadrant I (i.e. upper-right) the bullets I shoot don't pass through my cursor. Maybe this is because I ran the game in WINE, but I dunno. I don't have Windows. :P
So yea... I'm gonna leave it on overnight and see what wave I get too. I'm trying to cover the island in turrets. :P
Interesting idea, but I found it really hard to play. I couldn't really tell when a flower was wilting or not and getting wilted flowers to turn gold was really difficult.. unless employing the method bradur mentioned/
Interesting concept. I wasn't sure what I was doing... until I realized you used the guns to propel yourself through space.. that.. was innovative.
Nifty little game. I was gonna try and compile a linux version... but I have no idea what you used to code this. :P Anyways, I played it using WINE, and I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed a little too "slippery" when trying to control the chick. Might be a little more fun if it only moved when the player held the button down and didn't "slide" around after letting go.
Cool game! Music was nice. I just BARELY won. There was a sliver of health left right at the end and a giant axeman right there ready to tear the statue down... omg...
I did find a few bugs, though they might have been because I was playing the game in WINE. First, the wave numbers and enemy count seemed wrong. Second, I actually moved all the way off the screen on the far left and couldn't get back on.
Still, nice game!
Really awesome game! Was fun to play.. and reminded me of my submission. ;)
Only thing is... it didn't give me the last achievement... Couldn't figure out how to get it.. so I did peek in the jar file... *whistle*
It.. looks like you're supposed to get it when you shrink... but... when you're not in the "game"... Odd.. Anyways.. it was a whole lot of fun! :D
Interesting little "tech demo". I liked the graphics a lot.
Laggy controls? Odd. If anyone would care to give some more feedback about those laggy controls I could maybe look into it. Maybe a short video of the laggy controls in action?
matiasbontempo: press ESCAPE to end game... sorry if that wasn't clear, everyone.
