LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Endoparasitic by miziziziz 2021-04-26T12:51:41Z

Lives up to the Miziziziz name for sure. Very unique concept, well executed. Especially the last level which needed good reaction times. Art and audio is really great too.

Seems like we chose similar movement mechanics for our games :)

Infinity Dive by keepee 2021-04-28T15:07:21Z

This basically ticks all the boxes for amazing jam game. Nails the theme, super simple premise amazingly executed. Top dollar, nice one.

Goldf by Antti Tiihonen 2021-04-26T10:18:20Z

Core gameplay and mechanics are really fun and satisfying. Flying around feels great, and the music is lovely. The known bugs in the HTML5 version (spawning inside rocks in a new level) were irritating but just required a refresh of the page. Level generation generally worked well, I don't know if there are metrics to make sure the ball can actually reach the hole but I didn't get any impossible levels. Not the most original game though, and not sure what it has to do with the theme.

Deep Sickness by Poroporo-su 2021-04-26T12:29:07Z

I love the mechanic where jumping hurts you. Makes you think about how best to navigate around enemies (i.e. wait until they path underneath then drop down on the correct side). It would be have been cool to explore that a bit more. Aesthetics are wonderful, especially the 'mushroomy being' at the end. I like how your corpse turns into a mushroom when you die. Checkpoints should refill your health, I ended up killing myself at a checkpoint to restore my health for the journey ahead.

Baby's First Concussion by Roolow 2021-04-29T20:40:52Z

Nice! I actually managed to beat it by a very narrow margin (on the way back up the snakes were about to eat me both times). Really neat concept that perfectly fits the theme. I think it would have been better with a more Inception-like theme instead of the baby one, and the movement could be better (generally avoid slow acceleration for platformers, it makes jumping sideways feel real bad). Overall great job though!

Soaring Under by jitspoe 2021-04-26T10:27:56Z

A nice, if a little short, experience. Flight mechanics are quite well done, takes a while to understand but that's not a problem. Pickups are basically impossible to get and not worth taking the risk. It kind of conflicts with the laid-back/calming flying gameplay to make the pickups so small. I think if they were bigger and easier to grab it would be really satisfying to grab them while soaring. It's hard in 48 hours but the map could have been bigger, it kinds of ends as soon as you get into the rhythm. Procedural would be great but obviously much harder. Audio work is fantastic, especially the rustling of the wingsuit at high speeds. Really nice!

Quick Scrap by Vimlark 2021-04-26T09:51:35Z

Very fun and responsive movement mechanics. Lovely art and audio, good production values all around. Time-attack encourages you to make the most of the movement mechanics and take risks to go faster, which somewhat counters the general low level of difficulty. I think it could have done with a couple more mechanics (new enemies/abilities or environmental traps) introduced in later levels to keep things feeling fresh and challenging. The levels are all very similar, later ones just longer. The theme could have been utilised more than just 'the exit is below the entrance'.

Overall I gave 3.5 stars, nice work!

Diary of Sedah by azagaya 2021-04-27T14:09:24Z

One of the most polished and complete games I've tried so far in this LD48! Graphics are great (making good use of Laigter) music is catchy and doesn't get repetitive. Combat is fun and the two attacks and the two enemy types provide just enough variety (good it ended when it did though).

I would say the challenge was a bit low, I only died once because I couldn't find an exit in time. I think restoring all hearts when lighting a torch is too much, and perhaps shooting from the lantern should cost lantern energy.

Story and exposition was the icing on top, really well written and a nice twist at the end!

Virtually Deeper by Glaikunt 2021-04-27T13:22:35Z

It took me a while to understand what I was meant to be doing, but it's a neat idea once it clicked. Could do with a bit more explanation. The idea of going deeper into the simulation and leaving behind your 'previous' self is really clever and fits the theme perfectly. Music is good, but could have done with some SFX. Overall it's a very neat concept but execution could have been better. Nice one!

Ziggurat by nethead 2021-04-26T11:38:34Z

Visuals and audio is outstanding, not much more to say there. I will offer some feedback on the platforming mechanics: the small amount of acceleration when moving I think hinders the rather precise platforming required and doesn't feel great. Wall jumping felt a little odd, to go up a wall requires too much jump spamming, and jumping away from the wall and moving back felt inconsistent and sometimes wouldn't grab back on properly.

Deeper Than Light by Cinar 2021-04-29T18:37:22Z

Game looks great and very atmospheric! Didn't realise you could shoot until clicking accidentally. I got stuck pretty early on though and couldn't find a way to progress so I had to stop. It's not bad for your second Ludum Dare!

Deep Space Janitor by kristof 2021-04-29T18:43:56Z

I enjoyed this game! Very simplistic in graphics and gameplay but had some charm to it. I did laugh when Mary and Peter (I think?) died. Also I think plants need watering a bit more often than every few thousand years. Nice job!

Todd the Caver by Sam Bigos 2021-04-26T10:31:44Z

@impbox @squimmy thanks for the feedback! Yes, there is a bug where something keeps applying force onto the player, it is quite rare and I haven't tracked it down :( Respawning fixes it though.

Todd the Caver by Sam Bigos 2021-04-27T10:45:35Z

@nazorus @minibobbo @doc-kaos Thanks for the feedback. It is clear I made that pothole after the intermediate sign far too hard. I decided to go back and make it easier (v1.01 on Itch - and the HTML5 version). I hope that is within the LD rules, I really want people to be able to get past that point and see the rest of the game (that was probably the hardest part).

The original v1.0 is still available for Win64 and if you want to rate based on the this submission that is completely fine by me.

Todd the Caver by Sam Bigos 2021-04-27T12:57:40Z

@minibobbo :O Thanks for the clip! You can see it's a force being applied to the thigh causing it to lift up the player. I think I tracked down the problem piece of code and made a new build with a fix (I hope the gods of Ludum Dare don't punish me).

Dig It Out by Threaded Lama Digital 2021-04-27T13:43:05Z

I love the presentation! The pixel art, music, SFX, and the background stuff like characters talking to you as you walk past, and the leap into bed at the end of the day, is really great.

Unfortunately, unless I missed some hidden mechanic, it seems the there is basically no gameplay apart from to hold right and spam the spacebar. You will never miss an item this way and it guarantees you get as much as you can from a single day.

The idea of going deeper and deeper into debt is a nice one though, just not sure it's effectively communicated in the game.

Deepest Mine by SmelJey 2021-04-26T11:57:10Z

I really like the concept and some parts are really great (love how you can upgrade you dwarves and the sprites change). However I think you know that it is too buggy and unfinished. I think it has far too much scope for 48 hours, you are aiming for RTS + city builder + resource management and that is too much for anyone to make and polish. You should be proud of what you've done in 48 hours though and learn for the next one!

Bob's Depth by phealsout 2021-04-27T13:35:09Z

It needed a better tutorial, it took me a while to figure out I had to walk to the bottom to progress and being pushed to the top would reset me back to the previous level. I really like some of the ideas, like the enemy which pushes you up, that is very unique. The 3 colour attacks were also cool. I got to level 5 I think before it got too frustrating, as enemies would immediately spawn very close to the middle and force me to re-do the previous level.

Overall pretty good though. Nice one!

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

3rd Emu australian war simulator by sebbernery 2022-04-09T09:57:19Z

5/5 for humor. I especially loved 'sorry for what you saw' :D. Unfortunately the gameplay is lacking a bit. The best tactic seems to be to spam spacebar because charging the shot to hit emus when they are far away is hard and also aggrivates nearby emus which then charge you. A trajectory indicator for the charged shots would go a long way.

TyPing Pong by Gao Ming 2022-04-09T10:26:54Z

Ok, I feel dumb because I kept trying to type Me instead of Help: during the tutorial before figuring it out. That's on me though. I like everything about this. I only wish there was some sort of high score or it there was more about it. I think you could expand this into some sort of typing/learn to type game. Very polished and nice feeling. Good job!

Flooded Caves by nusan 2022-04-04T23:29:30Z

Fantastic. I only wish it wasn't made in Pico8 so it didn't slow down so much towards the end. Managed to get perfect win on very hard! a.png

Become a Guardian Angel by Vegevan 2022-04-04T22:32:21Z

I like that there's a tutorial and everything is described in-game. It's quite atmospheric. I'd forgotten to look into the alternate realm and was wondering why all my living dudes were being lost then I looked and there were demons everywhere haha. Made me jump. I think the livings move a bit too slowly, it's a little tedious to bring them back to the cathedral thing. Also maybe there should be two cathedrals because the demons kind of camp it (maybe there was and I missed it). Obviously the tiled graphics aren't great and could be improved. I liked the music and sounds though. Overall well done!

Balance The Stick by miziziziz 2022-04-09T10:13:11Z

I like the idea behind this, but I think the execution is lacking. The game lives or dies on how it feels to balance the stick, because that's all it is, but unfortunately the stick physics just doesn't feel realistic at all. It feels very laggy, if you quickly move your hand in one direction, you'd expect an immediate response from the stick but it will still continue tilting in the same direction for some time.

Ultimately this makes it unsatisfying to play.

The music and sfx are a great touch and add that signature Miziziziz flair.

Also I think you should embrace the spirit of Ludum Dare and review some other games, even though your fame encourages people to review your game outside of the karma system.

Sweet Bitterness by Bomb-X 2022-04-07T14:22:37Z

Fantastic! Good range of games, music was catchy enough and didn't get repetitive. Felt very much like a wario-ware game where where there's like a second after the time's up when whatever it is continues happening, like when you stop the dog petting but after the timer is up you pet the dog anyway :D Very good!

Enmest by LukiX 2022-04-04T22:15:41Z

I think I understand what you were going for with this, a sort of cookie clicking/universal paperclip incremental game but unfortunately it's way too slow and un-interesting to work. I gave it some time for something to happen (got up to 2 hotels) but then got bored and stopped. I just did everything as it was available to me. Also, the timings just threw me off, bills are per month and income is per day, but I get a new bill something like every 5 incomes which doesn't add up.

I do like the aesthetic choice though, it fits the theme and gameplay quite well.

Engineer's Last Stand by shp 2022-04-04T22:49:29Z

Very impressive level of polish. The models, VFX, audio, UI, all work well together to make the game look cohesive and professional. And that's with a 3D game! Gameplay is great as well, if a little un-original. Though I really like that the turrets have friendly fire which adds another element of strategy and depth in where you place them. Perhaps some more bug variety would be nice as well, they all seem quite similar but with different health. Minor things though, very well done!

...Rise of the Toasty Tomato by snesgaard 2022-04-04T22:02:51Z

Very ambitious to make a deckbuilder in 2 days but I think you did a good job. Like others have said the controls and feedback is lacking but the gameplay itself is well done. Nice one.

Secret Mission: Datastorm by Sentmoraap 2022-04-09T09:34:33Z

I understand the controls, but I don't think it makes for good gameplay. It's very weird controlling the car in two ways at once. That said, I like the graphics and idea of the game, and the fact you made it in your own engine is commendable! Nice.

Computer Scientist Training Lab by YellowKamel 2022-04-19T18:34:32Z

Really great. If I had one complaint it's that the core mechanic really just boils down to moving to avoid obstacles, with the added difficulty of having to type your move instead of using WASD or whatever. It feels a bit like forced difficulty instead of something that makes sense. Like, the typing doesn't add anything except the difficulty which is a shame. I think you could improve this by introducing some delay where you have to program moves in advance, and slow it down a bit, so it's less of a fast reaction game and more a programmer/puzzle game.

Anyway that sounds like a lot of negative but generally I think it's very impressive for the compo, presentation is great, tutorial is great. Well done!

Captain Starforce by extar 2022-04-09T09:51:15Z

Very nice. Graphics and music/sfx are great. Controls feel good and there's nice feedback on everything like destroying asteroids and collecting crew. A few minor things that could improve the game would be to move the camera ahead of the ship when it's moving, because it's very hard to see upcoming asteroids and I tended to plow through them (since health regens so fast). Also, some indicator for where the drop-off point is would help.

Ant CRISIS by Ambear 2022-04-09T09:26:18Z

I love the ambition! Very atmospheric and nice idea. There are some control and visibility issues though. I managed to get two plants back to the mound but after that I couldn't pick up any more plants. I like how it's randomly generated.

Stacktics by Sam Bigos 2022-04-04T23:00:13Z

@iwilliams ah sorry about the crash. I can't reproduce it myself but will keep an eye out. @vilmantas yeah it's a little unclear, but there's a ceiling slowly coming down to crush you, though it starts off-screen to give you enough time to build up. Play for a few minutes and you'll see it (it also doesn't start descending until you hit Start, before that is just warm-up/practice. @sirjupitron Thank you! Respectable score indeed.

Stacktics by Sam Bigos 2022-04-05T21:31:05Z

@iwilliams thanks for your information! I think I have fixed that crash and put out a hotfix (which is within the rules I believe). @lukix thanks for the feedback, yeah that is something I wanted to improve but didn't have time for. @benbennett that's very odd, I haven't seen that one. Thanks for the info! @puree-adventure Thank you so much! I believe the crash should be fixed now. I also realised there was another bug causing the ceiling to fall at different rates depending on framrate which is fixed now. @bodcodes Thank you!

Stacktics by Sam Bigos 2022-04-09T19:23:48Z

@dandala88 thanks for taking the time to comment! It really means a lot. I think I have seen the physics bug you mentioned once before, when building a really tall tower. You're right, I think there's something wrong with how the physics is setup, in that a block isn't able to support the weight of blocks on top of it.

SILAS by googlypoo 2022-04-07T20:46:31Z

Nice game! Really love the mood of this one, with the narration and music. Puzzles were clever and well designed. I think it could have been sped up a bit though, was a bit tedious waiting for death to move.

Impending Doom by Castitatis 2022-04-09T10:32:32Z

Very nice take on the incremental clicking genre. I like that there's an end though it doesn't fit well with the theme as much. Graphics and audio are fantastic. It is quite easy to cheese simply by spamming eco upgrades and then laser ones. It could have perhaps been balanced a bit better so you have to spend on lasers earlier. Very good though!

It's like they knew... by boc_dev 2022-04-18T18:08:08Z

Love the unique idea. It was well executed, especially like the sound effects. I think levels could do with a bit more variety and introduce some new mechanics to really make use of the 'second playthrough' idea. But for 48 hours very well done!

Drater by lomstfer 2022-04-09T10:02:31Z

This was fun for the time I was able to play it, but during the daytime you seem to 'dissolve' (for lack of a better term) faster than you could possibly collect, so it seems impossible to get more than 1 day score?

It's a nice idea but needs to be fleshed out and polished more. Good job for your first LDJam though and respect for developing in SDL2.

LD56 — Tiny Creatures

Caves and Critters by LeviDSmith 2024-10-12T20:54:20Z

Like others, not sure what to do :(

Ducks on the Road by designernap 2024-10-07T22:34:31Z

I have so many questions. Why is an aircraft marshal herding ducks in his free time? Why is he guiding them onto the road, there must be something very special at the end of that tunnel! Who is the idiot on the council who keeps making drainage grates randomly in a roadside patch of grass?

Brilliant, 10/10, would duck again.

RiboJam by Wispeh 2024-10-07T23:14:32Z

Cool! I love the art style and music. I agree with @tuism on most points, the difficulty ramped up too fast, I think I needed more time to get used to the controls, as it was a bit tricky to map fingers to colours. But great job for your first jam in 7 years!

Beachfront by DecadeDecaf 2024-10-07T22:59:23Z

As a big fan of asexual reproduction in games, this was right up my alley. The first time an alien died and another alien ate the corpse, I knew I was hooked. I only had to babysit the population until the rate of reproduction outpaced the rate of death by saline inhalation. From that point on, the waterfront provided an endless supply of corpses for the newborns to feed on. Cute!

Beachfront by DecadeDecaf 2024-10-07T23:18:40Z

Day 357: The beach is more dead alien flesh than sand at this point. The constant slurping drone has become a sort of melody, it has penetrated my consciousness and has become part of what defines me.

Strange Little Men by alanbrook 2024-10-12T20:51:28Z

I love everything about the presentation! Unfortunately I found it way too hard, starting at level 3 there were too many to keep track of, you'd scan one dude, go to scan another dude, and lose track of the first one. I really like the idea though!

Gravity Well by Sam Bigos 2024-10-07T21:40:38Z

@designernap Thank you for sticking through the first time experience, and for the kind words! Yes it's a bit unintuitive, if I had some more time I'd try and improve it.

@decadedecaf Thank you so much! Yes as you discovered, the balance between the upgrades and energy isn't balanced correctly, due mainly to time constraints. The limiting factor is energy, I didn't add enough ways to scale it.

GELATINOUS INVADER SIMULATOR by Fint 2024-10-15T11:01:08Z

Very good game! Nice one. Love how the mechanics and strategies are taught in an emergent way.

Blu by Mirtol 2024-10-12T21:04:50Z

Collecting the moons is really satisfying, but they are very hard to see. Definitely on to something but needs more work!

Genus Arcanus by petit 2024-10-15T10:33:31Z

I love the idea of breeding the optimal cultists to sacrifice, but the gameplay was very impenetrable. I wasn't sure what I was meant to be doing and since breeding a new generation seems to have no penalty, the best strategy seems to be breeding to get 4 Chosen and then sacrifice them? Can it be completed with fewer than 4 sacrifices?
