LD45 — Start with nothing

Area 45 by conk 2019-10-08T22:08:32Z

A little more explanation on the controls would be nice. I think I got the hang of it after awhile. Fart to generate income. Drive wolves away with Toot/Rage. Drive devils away with Pray. After awhile I was unable to produce more bible thumpers or Kkonas, so an explanation on that would be nice too. Great art though. The best art. Some people have said you have the best art in the world. Maybe ever. And it's true. 1000%

Nobody's Journey by Phyro 2019-10-10T04:00:57Z

I love a good card game and this is a fresh take. The only real critique I can give is it would be nice to see the cards or some amount of explanation associated with each quest. Or maybe that's there and I just missed it :) Great game either way!

Fireflies Will Find My Bones by 0x01F0 2019-10-09T15:23:46Z

I agree with everyone above, the art, music and atmosphere were excellent. Games like this really depend on eliciting an emotional response; something like every bone you gather for the spirit, tell us something about the main character or have the main character think out loud to give us insight into his motivations. I would also suggest that all the fireflies spawn initially instead of having to gather them in a specific order--this would improve the rate at which you reward players as they would have a greater chance of stumbling upon one of the three earlier rather than finding just the one. Overall, great job and keep it up!

Get off the Hook by RAC-Games 2019-10-08T02:28:59Z

Great ambient music and excellent level design.

Color me Blind by Re-Markable 2019-10-08T19:57:53Z

Interesting game. I really like the movement speed; it gives you time to appreciate the world you are coloring. The camera was a little difficult to control, but the payoff at the end was innovative and rewarding. Good job!

ØJE by Gaming Night 2019-10-18T21:44:05Z

Great game. Lovely level design. I did get stuck on one part because I grabbed the blue orb before I grabbed the pink orb, but it was no problem restarting and grabbing the pink first. I think the jump is the clear winner here; it is perfectly smooth. Well done overall.

Start with Nothing by Dinwy 2019-10-08T02:01:41Z

I love card games, and this reminded me a lot of Slay the Spire. The art of the enemies and of the character is great. I wish the cards in your hand were a bit more visible because there is more room for them to be spread out. Also, it would be nice if there was some visual distinction shown when targeting an enemy. Great job!

GRIMOIRE by Eryph 2019-10-07T22:47:34Z

I may just be stupid, but I could not move the character with w or s nor the arrows keys. I like the concept of storing your spells in f# keys, but I did not figure out how to do that either. Great art and solid concept though.

GRIMOIRE by Eryph 2019-10-09T15:01:42Z

Retried the game and now that I know how to move around... what a blast! Great job! I had a lot of fun with this.

Rottenville by zanzavar 2019-10-07T22:54:27Z

Great music and lore. Solid gameplay. The only suggestion I would have is to make the path more intuitive; You could snake the path instead of a roundabout. Overall, great job!

When Nothing Came by velvetlobster 2019-10-14T21:03:52Z

I played quite a few games this jam that chose to omit instructions at the detriment of the game's experience. This game is not one of them. It's simple, intuitive, and emotion provoking. The music makes the game for me. The simple art and the drab colors strengthen the mood. The story is clear. Wonderful game.

Seedlings by Raed 2019-10-08T02:11:24Z

Very interesting mechanic in fighting against the wind to allow your seed to plant in the ground. The controls were not very intuitive at first, but once I got the hang of it it was challenging and fun. However, the seeds take quite awhile to hit the ground so I was not able to juggle multiple seeds at once. The spawn rate of leaves is also quite slow, so there isn't much of a threat in the game. Very innovative tho. Good job!

Be Wise by JanaChumi 2019-10-08T02:05:04Z

Solid game. I really like picking up the spells. It would be nice if there were some sort of checkpoint system or at least health.

Hoarder's Paradise by Scott Steffes 2019-10-07T23:42:05Z

Great amount of content. Stacking can be a little unintuitive. I was hoping my cat would rip the rats to shreds. Useless cat... Guess I'll buy 72 more.

Oh!My God by AlerHugues 2019-10-08T18:36:59Z

Great game, great art, great sound. My only critique would be to add a description of interactions in the game. Beyond that, good job!

FromNothing by Copito 2019-10-08T20:28:34Z

Simple and fun. The stress of finding apples in the early game really adds to the mood. Great job on the sound as well; love the movement of the skeletons. The combat was also engaging. Well done overall.

バクラウBloodless by Danilo Freire 2019-10-07T22:25:14Z

Love the artwork and sound design. Controls could be a little bit more intuitive, but I had fun once I got the hang of it.

Don't RIP in Hell by Somogy 2019-10-08T00:19:04Z

The guiding of mobs is a great mechanic. The story at the beginning was captivating. My only critique is that you explain how the game works within the game. Overall, great job and I had a lot of fun playing your game!

Cipher by TaqoShaq 2019-10-09T05:00:04Z

"I have no idea how I'm solving these. Oh okay, I get it. Wait, no I don't. Nevermind, I do."

Seriously, though, this is my game of the jam so far. Well thought out puzzles. Even the tutorials are thought provoking. You introduce new elements at a great pace and you cap it off strong.

cipher_ld.png

No, thank you.

Blood Pact by theStoff 2019-10-07T23:32:52Z

Excellent art. Missing a lot of environment hitboxes, but the animations and attack system were solid. Enemy knockback or stun on hit would have brought the combat to the next level. Solid job!

While you're here by Dinorex 2019-10-07T23:57:59Z

Great story. Thank you for such a heartfelt contribution to the jam. Well done!

Rough Sleeper by DrSomma 2019-10-08T02:19:50Z

The camera made it a little hard to play and it would have been interesting to find different loot than empty water bottles in the trash cans, but I liked the idea and the art was great. I would love to see this game with fewer time constraints. Good job and keep it up!

Desert by Pedroso 2019-10-15T18:01:19Z

Although storytelling is your main goal here, I think that there are more ways to do so than just text on the screen. Especially when we're dealing with such a visual medium. The character himself shows no struggle until the very end. It would be nice to see a sense of desperation as he tries to carry as much as he can--I think this would help bridge the gap between the story and the character. Also, it would be nice if the camera rotated the character instead of using wasd for both rotation and movement. Beyond those couple of things, I thought you did a great job on the theme and I think you absolutely nailed the mood. Well done!

POLYMON by PIXAMENTORY 2019-10-15T18:30:28Z

There were some bugs with regards to receiving the kill upon last hit and a top down camera angle is not the best choice when really needing to gauge if you are above someone or not, but I had a lot of fun. The "surprise" did not die when I brought his health down to 0. I landed about 10 hits on it with his health bar empty before I decided to just suicide. Again though, one of the funnest games of the jam imo.

Contraband by AdamCYounis 2019-10-09T21:17:12Z

Very fun game, but the knockback on the hunger mechanic was super obnoxious. It made wall jumping impossible if hungry. I'm sure this was intentional, but it diminished the fun imo. Great game overall though.

Refuge by LadyPossum 2019-10-08T00:12:11Z

Great art. This game has a lot of character. Well done and good luck on your future games!

Nothing On Frontlines by Pavel Ivanov 2019-10-08T15:58:58Z

Great game and very fun to play, but I think you fell short on the theme.

Nothing For Heaven by Xotsu 2019-10-17T18:29:14Z

The controls and jump leave a lot to be desired in terms of gameplay and fun. The camera at times is also quite unforgiving as there are instances where you need to mentally picture where the platform is under you before jumping; this could easily be fixed by just moving some platforms up a bit. I also think that your application of the theme detracted from the game. I didn't want to gain Nothingness from killing enemies and I didn't want to pick up items because I didn't want to lower Nothingness, so I found myself just speedrunning to the end of the game. In other words, it really disincentivised exploring. Lastly, I felt that mood of the environment and the music was very contrasting. The art overall was well done though and I think your level design is actually smart as well; I thought it was a nice touch when you hid the one enemy behind a bush.

Overall, I think with some focus on balancing your game would be very fun, but I understand the time constraint and I think you did a great job for your first jam. Well done and good luck on future jams!

IROAI by Aleksey Moiseev 2019-10-08T00:33:39Z

What a great game mechanic! The main character's design is also very cool! I would suggest changing the controls for the eyes to 1-4 as that is a bit more easier to hit while moving. It would also be nice to indicate which eyes were closed with a simple eyelid that toggles over them. Overall, I was very impressed with your level of innovation! Well done!

Hellion: The Legend of Jeff by Mad Brokli 2019-10-09T16:13:26Z

Excellent game. Very fun and smooth controls. I absolutely loved the sound effects. I think the map could be a little smaller so that you can focus on building a base. Also, the seemingly random spawn points of angels was somewhat confusing as I did not know where to position and found myself running around a lot. Again, though, awesome game.

The Legend of the Empty One by SpicyPaper 2019-10-15T19:36:16Z

Fun game level to level, but the overall experience is extremely unbalanced. Random levels are fine, but to spawn enemies based on how far in the game you are, rather than how the level is structured, adds to this skewed balance. Also, skills are very underwhelming. Randomness of spawn points and skill selection is also frustrating. Perhaps a pick one of three skills would have been more fun in order to allow the player to build a certain play style. Beyond those core mechanics, I think the theme was kinda just tossed in as you obtain 4 things at the beginning of the game.

Having said all that, this is a jam game at the end of the day, and I believe the idea is there. Your skill inventory is a great idea, the controls are incredibly smooth, and the game is just plain fun. Given more polishing and play testing I think this would be an absolute home run. Great job.

Clothes On My Back, Things In The Sack by MaxyMax 2019-10-09T20:55:31Z

Simple, fun, humorous, and challenging. Great job; one of my favorites of the jam.

Monolith by Kalucifer 2019-10-09T03:55:38Z

Was dodging missiles for a good 2 minutes before I went afk and realized they deflected off me... From your description the lack of explanation for the controls seems intentional, but in any game when you see a missile flying at you, you don't usually think "I'm gonna let that hit me in the face!"

Cult War by Ksandr7 2019-10-07T22:30:51Z

Excellent artwork. Instructions are vague, but very easy to pick up once you understand what's going on.

Soul Avenger by Kaizo 2019-10-08T00:26:51Z

I think I am starting at the wrong level. I start right away at Death who I encounter when I move in either direction. I read your description and it says that I should be able to find a sword and armor, but I was not able to defeat Death nor was I able to find the treasure chest in the screenshot above. Perhaps you built the game with the scenes ordered incorrectly? I think this game has a lot of potential!

Chef Butch's Diner by Nick_UI 2019-10-17T18:05:27Z

The idea sounds solid. I think you did a good job with the mood from the dialogue and the mysterious guy out back (dunno if he was intentional). The movement was fine, but picking up and putting things down was a chore. Serving was also pretty tough as the plates just slide right out from under the "food." A simple fix to that would be if food collides with the upper half of the plate, then just make the food a child (see what I did there?). Overall, I love a good dark horror so this was enjoyable for me just by how creepy the idea is, but, as you guys already know, the execution is lacking.

Raven Knight Geist by KaiserCrimson1 2019-10-08T21:20:30Z

Having the player centered on the screen would really help with moving around and fighting enemies. Your web version does not mention spacebar to jump. It was short, but it has a lot of potential. You knocked it out of the park with the art. Good job and keep it up!

Alone by Fragment Games 2019-10-07T22:43:12Z

What a great mechanic. I love the art design. That flopping belly is hilarious! I struggled a little bit at the beginning to understand the game itself, but once I realized the water mechanic I started getting much further! Great job!

Rekindling Of Iron by HKSpadez 2019-10-08T20:29:49Z

@palemek I hope you do finish it. A bit of a spoiler alert, but you do get more health further in ;)

Rekindling Of Iron by HKSpadez 2019-10-08T23:07:49Z

@wolf4d Yeah, we did not notice the lighting on our monitors, so we are working on an update as we have heard this from a few people.

Rekindling Of Iron by HKSpadez 2019-10-09T15:08:52Z

@mungo Thank you for the detailed feedback. Much appreciated.

Rekindling Of Iron by HKSpadez 2019-10-10T03:25:35Z

@adamcyounis That's high praise. Much appreciated, and thank you for playing.

Murder On Peacock Street by Seabird 2019-10-09T16:11:29Z

Art and atmosphere are top notch. I would love to be able to rotate the camera as I had some trouble clicking on some things. Also, when a certain man is pointing towards something, I had trouble seeing his hands so it was difficult to figure out where he was pointing with the fixed camera angle. Overall, I think you did a really good job. Well done!

Farm for your life by Cindynator 2019-10-17T16:35:55Z

Great job on the ambient sounds and the voice acting. The art was also very good. The gameplay itself was simple yet very fun. My only critique would be that RNG either makes this game difficult or exceedingly easy; I had a mix of tomatoes and carrots on my first couple of playthroughs and failed while learning the energy system, and then on my third playthrough it was a breeze because it was practically raining eggplants. Great job.

💩 by panganaki 2019-10-08T19:50:30Z

Good shit! Colliders are a little messed up on the water drops where you can get hit just by standing/jumping near them, but the gameplay was really fun.

Crimson Labyrinth by k0haku 2019-10-17T17:50:11Z

It definitely was not shitty. I think you guys did a fantastic job (especially for your first game). You did a great job on mood with the music and the fog. The camera and controls were smooth. I thought the level design was smart. I didn't find out that there was a respawn until I got the wall climb so it was super tense till I spammed spacebar and accidentally jumped off the tower. Your placement of the last question mark (or at least the last one that I had to go back for) was rewarding if you paid attention as your progressed. My only critique would be that it's a little simple and would be drastically improved with some lore. Great job either way, and keep it up!

Crimson Labyrinth by k0haku 2019-10-17T17:51:26Z

Also, good on you for opting out of Graphics/Sound. We chose to do the same on our game, and I've noticed many other teams not do this when they obviously used pre-made assets.

LD46 — Keep it alive

Null and Void by Polyethyleneglykol 2020-04-21T06:11:22Z

Jumping from roof to roof felt very good, but waiting on elevators really slowed the pace of the game down. I think once you allow the player to perform more fluid vertical movement, the time gained from each checkpoint can be lower and then you can really feel a sense of rush as you race towards the next checkpoint. As it was I had a stockpile of time. Closing the doors on the tutorial was a great call because I loved that narrative at the beginning and it was a great introduction to the game.

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

It's The Leash I Can Do by hemlocksoames 2020-10-11T07:35:10Z

Great use of the theme. I thought your leashing mechanic was very innovative. I think that the bark mechanic could use some refining, but that's a minor blemish on a great jam game. Well done!

Life Of Crime by HKSpadez 2020-10-08T21:04:16Z

Thanks everyone for trying out the game! We are disappointed to hear that some people are running into performance issues. Development came down to the wire and we certainly did not take optimization into account. We appreciate all the comments!

Cycloop by Erlioniel 2020-10-09T19:02:55Z

The puzzles are interesting, but due to their simple nature (simplicity is not a bad thing in this situation) running back and forth pressing them isn't necessarily fun. Your movement system is very good; the jump feels very fluid. I think if you incorporated the jump into the actual pressing of buttons, it could have helped. As of right now, obstacles like boxes are only there as a source of tedium, but could be incorporated into the puzzle itself with your excellent movement system.

I commend you on the graphics and the puzzles themselves though. Great job!

LD51 — Every 10 seconds

Friendship Deathmatch by Patomkin 2022-10-12T22:40:31Z

The game looks great, but it would be nice if there was a description of abilities/controls in-game as well as the goal. Great job, though!

Oracle of Colliding Realms by hunttis 2022-10-13T03:43:49Z

A great take on the theme. The first 2 levels were rather easy, but the 3rd is a great finale to really utilize all of the abilities. I didn't even know I could double jump or speed up time until the 3rd level forced me to, which is great incremental design. Well done!

Clock Caper by Ryan Dotsikas 2022-10-13T03:41:39Z

A truly creative idea that is genuinely fun to play. My favorite game of the jam. Bravo!

Night Watch by Gus the Shark 2022-10-12T23:16:49Z

I love a good card game, and this is definitely a fresh take. I like how you expanded on the simple idea by adding attack types and enemy weaknesses. I do think that generating coins every 10 seconds is a bit limiting, so perhaps generating coins via killing wilderness enemies and/or playing specific cards would be nice.

Great job overall; very fun.

They hate each other ! by Kaimon 2022-10-12T22:45:05Z

Fun idea. Could've made it a little more challenging by adding in different types/colors of dogs and cats, but great job overall! Why do they hate each other? :/

Simple Geometry by HKSpadez 2022-10-14T17:49:03Z

Thank you for all the constructive criticism. We definitely agree that starting the timer at the end of camera rotation is an issue we would have loved to address. We apologize for how this negatively impacts the fairness of the game. However, we are very grateful for the positive responses.

Thanks, @icxon for sticking with it for so long. Sorry that you were not able to figure out the last puzzle :C

Temporal Escape by Louis Mareau 2022-10-12T19:42:33Z

winscreen.png

Solid game! I didn't find myself using the dash at all, but the movement was very smooth. I'm just realizing now that I didn't try out the ultimate ability... that might have made the Owl fight a little quicker lol.

I did not notice any difference between the enemies. Some would explode, but I didn't notice the explosion doing anything. Perhaps an enemy that didn't move, but shot from afar, would make for more interesting gameplay.

Overall, solid game with good art. The title screen was gorgeous. Well done!

Ten Out by Holtzzy223 2022-10-12T22:27:40Z

I like the idea here, but the theme held you back more than it supported your gameplay. One minor suggestion for controls, I think that allowing a player to interact with 'e' to focus on a mirror and then rotate it with 'a' and 'd' might have been more user-friendly than the scroll wheel. Overall, solid puzzle though and you nailed the mood and the sound. Well done :)

Trespasser by Beep Boop 2022-10-13T03:36:25Z

This idea works very well for the theme. I appreciate that you all added an extra element with the monsters and the circle acting as a timer looks great. Well done!

Rush Hour by SephoWepho 2022-10-12T19:03:55Z

Well done! I'm a huge Overcooked fan, so I really enjoyed playing this game. It looked great as well!

It was, however, very difficult. I'll echo other reviewers' sentiments that it would be nice if the order was centered and perhaps hide the not relevant items for the current order. I think that the number of items is also slightly too high--some of the orders required 10 items, which clicking back and forth in 10 seconds was very difficult. My advice in the future is to not forget about user experience, and consider what a user would find "fun."

Balance is really hard to get right in a jam, so I understand the shortcomings and praise the amazing finished product that you put out!

10 second to Shelter by Frankey333 2022-10-13T04:01:55Z

Looks great and it's a solid idea, but it isn't very player friendly. Loot could have perhaps been non-random in order to make it not purely luck based. Additionally, perhaps adding alternative bunkers at certain distances away from homebase as a psuedo checkpoint system. Regardless, great job.

RunCubungus by williewlchew 2022-10-13T03:51:07Z

Good use of the theme. I appreciate the varied behavior of the enemies across dimensions, and the fun little Easter egg. It was a nice touch to implement a slowdown effect instead of a sprint; they basically have the same effect, but slowdown plays more to the theme. Great job on your first jam, and keep it going!

Nua by Cayurr 2022-10-12T19:27:05Z

I like the concept here. Contrary to others' opinions, I thought the icons were very intuitive, and had no trouble beating the game on the first try (I did start on v1.2 though, so maybe that's why).

I was surprised to find that I could move over any type of tile, be it water, thorn, etc. I was also surprised that I did not take any damage when stepping on a tile that looked like it would hurt me (thorny tile for example). I think those elements could be used to enforce the puzzle aspect of the game because it was rather straightforward to beat each level.

Overall, the mood was great, the gameplay was very intuitive, and I had a good time playing it. Congratulations on putting out a great first jam game; I hope you keep it up!
