LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

The Adventures of Darsh in Offscreenland by mmoustafa 2014-12-09T06:32:00

Love the fact that the master hovers! :D
Well done, I had quite a laugh.

The Crown Of The Rectangles by PTSnoop 2014-12-12T20:05:00

Gosh, this is difficult! In a good way! :)

You should fix your drawing order -> when the guy is too close to the wall, then he's currently drawn under it even though he's infront of it. You could start by a simple "is the player in this area" check and if so, draw him before drawing the wall - otherwise, draw the wall first.
I like how the guards move less when I move less. Gives me more control over the game, if I take my time.

I actually also liked the graphics - it was the reason why I clicked on the image!

One-Floor Dungeon by Ryusui 2014-12-12T20:33:00

I got that darn crown. Am I king now? :)

Awesome game. I found it hard at first, but then it got better once I got the hang of some of the rooms and the monsters.
The micro-graphics are great!
Would be nice if there was a sound each time you loose a heart - didn't even catch that at the beginning.
Well done, it feels very polished.

Twilight of Humanity by wilbefast 2014-12-08T18:26:00

Your source code looks very nice and structured.
But why not supply a .love?

Dungeons & Margins VII: Financial Fantasy by matthewdpace 2014-12-11T12:17:00

Haha, I think I just bought an "excellent mithril helment" from a guy for 2 Gold and then the same guy offers me a "average bronze crossbow" for 27 gold :D

It'd be nice if I could see all items the hero wants to sell on one screen (list?) or at least multiple ones at once, with the current one selected and up/down keys scrolling up and down the list. It took me a while to figure out it was all part of the same exchange.

Other than that - love the idea, and like the jokes hidden in there!

Baa Ram Ewe by renatopp 2014-12-10T13:45:00

Awesoem game. The mechanics works much better than I anticipated. Very well done!!

All levels worked for me.

One Screen Worship by Gungnir 2014-12-08T19:58:00

In the beginning it was very funny. I really like the picture and the idea! But for me it quickly became boring because nothing changed. I think there should be some kind of reward for the player, like funny coments by the family members?

Drillguy 0F-8 by jcmoyer 2014-12-12T19:58:00

I also think that the speed should only be decreased when hitting rocks, not ore. Ore should only be rewarded! I didn't read anywhere about how to speed up, so at first, I was pretty confused.

The 4-way movement makes this game pretty hard, similar to snake, I guess, but with much more on the screen.
Good work for 19 hours!

OUTRANGE by Snuux 2014-12-08T09:32:00

Great game!
Love the graphics.
One suggestion: Make the shots a different color from the enemies.

Other than that, well done!

Zombie Simulator 2014 by barrucadu 2014-12-12T18:29:00

Hey, congrats on finishing this! It works well so far, and it's actually quite difficult to keep track of everyone!

Couple of minor things:
- For a zombie setting, I would use a dark color scheme.
- I think it would be much better if the poeple said their things in speech-bubbles that appear next to them. This way it's hard to tell where stuff is happening
- It took me quite some time to figure out that the buttons on the lower right aren't actions, but "modes". I didn't get this at first.
- It's hard to tell who's selected, maybe add a small rectangle around the selected people or similar.

One Does Not Simply Walk Into More Doors by Wertle 2014-12-08T20:18:00

I didn`t get more than a few candies! Could you please add WASD as control because my keyboard doesn`t work. But I really like the game!! Great Idea, Great music, great graphics. Everything fits very well. It`s really fun to play!

Try Saving Animals by kneeko 2014-12-12T20:14:00

Wow, this is really awesome. Well done on all aspects of the game.

Are those real ducks or rubber ducks with a spine? O.o

Entire Game on One Screen! by Qrchack 2014-12-12T18:40:00

The .love is broken (something about "gems" missing).
I can run it with the command 'love .' though.
I think it might not be packaged correctly?

The graphics are really pleasing, and the movement is well done (the little "skipping" animation)!

20 Days at Sea by bitserum 2014-12-12T17:06:00

Great work on this, well done!
I thought I was going to die of dehydration, but right now it looks like sickness will kill me :(

Two things (I don't want to call the "issues", the game is great as is):
It's day 16 and I have nothing left to do but wait for certain death. I've collected and crafted everything I can. I know the theme was "Entire game on one screen", but a bit of exploration wouldn't do this game any harm.
Second point: She jumps off the left of the raft with a delay, for some reason, while jumping of the right works fine.

Well done on this, it's really fun already!

Also, there are screen resolution issues (UI and ending - try it at different resolutions, you'll notice).

Well done on this, it's really fun already!

P.S. Haha, just finished the game and noticed I have to increase the humor rating :D

Play Area by Halleflux 2014-12-28T13:19:00

Some levels don't work well when the screen size isn't widescreen. Other than that, great game, awesome idea, great puzzles. Well done, especially for a first LD!

S by Lars Faust 2014-12-08T14:13:00

Great work.
I needed to play twice (and gladly did) before really understanding the mechanics.

It's very well done! Things that could be improved (if there was any time): The hexagons are sometimes not entirly clear about what element they are. The map looks great this way, but maybe if it was a little clearer, that would be nice. I assumed that all tiles with water on them were water, but then I found one that had a small lake on it that wasn't a water tile, for example. This cost me a few points...
The dragging isn't always perfect. Twice, I dragged a tile downwards and it showed up on the right. Maybe, while dragging, display a small arrow?

Highest score so far: 24
Again, awesome game, especially the graphics!

Claustrophobia by OldPeculier 2014-12-08T10:06:00

Great concept, great work.

I survived 10 minutes, but lost Claire. Poor Claire.

It's great how the writing at the bottom really makes you "dive into" the scene - some texts make you hurry to the outer rooms, others take you back to the center.

Naming the children was a great idea.

Grid Cars by Germanunkol 2014-12-08T18:28:00

Thanks for the comments and kind words everyone!

If we get the chance to put up a dedicated server later this week, I'll make sure to post the address here, so that everyone can join the same server. Until then, get some friends or family together - it's really fun to play with others! :D

Grid Cars by Germanunkol 2014-12-11T07:37:00

Sorry, the jam was too short to include a tutorial :)
Click on one of the highlighted grid joints around the car. Then the car will move to that grid. In future moves, the highlighted grids (i.e. the places you can go) will always depend on the past move. The fast you go, the faster you will go next round.

Grid Cars by Germanunkol 2014-12-12T16:23:00

Hey everyone - thanks for the great comments! Really encouraging! :)

@ RHY3756547: Thanks a lot for the extensive feedback. We implemented a few of your suggested changes:
- Server is no longer commenting on each
- The kicking of non-ready users had been taken out about 10 minutes after you left. It was a measure against idling people in the lobby, but it wasn't well executed. Instead, we added spectating now - everyone who isn't ready in time will just spectate.
- This also takes care of the joining issue: Now everyone can join, even during a game -> they'll just be spectators (Great idea here.)
We have not changed any game mechanics - I feel that would be "cheating", post ludum-dare. Also, I kind of like the simplicity of it, usually this game is played on pen and paper. But the server-side issues should all be fixed. Thanks for playing!!

Grid Cars by Germanunkol 2014-12-28T12:28:00

@Madball, thanks for checking it out and thanks for the feedback!
Different coloured chat is def. something we would have to add if we continue to update this. Alternate controls is a good point - they would make sense not only for zooming but also for the UI.
For making your own maps, we wrote a tutorial, check this out:

Frenzy Snowman Smasher by runvs 2014-12-21T14:17:00

3275! :)

Very fun. But I really dislike how I can't see myself. The color-scheme ist neat, but it makes it hard to distinguish the player from the blood...

King of the Castle by adamwfindlay 2014-12-12T16:31:00

There was one fire where I'm not sure I could have put it out -> it was on the side of a tower, and in the heat of the battle I did not figure out how to stop it.
And I also saw returning arrows. Other than that -> awesome game. Very well done, it just works, is fun (and funny)!

Fluidity by WetDesertRock 2014-12-12T20:08:00

Really nice graphics!

I agree that the player could be more elastic. It feels like he should have an additional weight at the end, which makes it easier to spin.
Great contept though, and nice shading!

You Have the Con by OccamsRazor 2014-12-08T18:34:00

Could you publish executables as well? I'm on Linux where the Unity Web Player doesn't work, and this game looks great - I'd like to play it!

Colosseum Brawl by deadpixelsociety 2014-12-09T06:40:00

Just wondering - what's your own highscore? This game is pretty hard :)

Overload by PnDAA 2014-12-08T18:10:00

Great idea, well done!
It took me a while to figure out the acutal mechanics, but I had fun doing so!
Haven't been able to beat the game yet...

The backgrounds are somewhat disturbing :P.

Congrats on finishing the game!

Complemental Doors by Aomeas 2014-12-12T20:40:00

Great one!
Well done on this. It turned out very great. And thank you for not making me restart at the beginning when I touched that mouse! :D

Complemental Doors by Aomeas 2014-12-12T20:41:00

Did you view all the levels at once with some sort of layering method while making them?

ATSS - A Typical Space Shooter by Groydis 2014-12-08T18:21:00

Good game!
The start confused me: Because the mother ship moves to the left, it looks like the screen is moving right, and then suddenly I "jump" out of the right side of the screen.
Also, I kept on dying outside the screen, because there were enemies there - so at first I thought the border of the screen kills me.

But it's fun and plays well - which is the most important part!

Snowman Invasion by Jaloko 2014-12-09T15:26:00

Good game!

I think there should be a fire option (super power which you can only use every X seconds?) which melts down all snowmen in an area :D

Panoptes by vrld 2014-12-08T17:59:00

Great game. Extremly polished.

I had one bug where the "plop" sound was played over and over again, repeatedly. That did not sound good - otherwise, awesome.

Also, this game propably contains the most creative "back" button I've ever seen :)

The Operator by little-burrito 2014-12-11T08:33:00

Great idea. You should continue, and I love the idea of a hotseat multiplayer.

Before having read your comment above, I thought "the agent would need to use some second controller - great to see that this is exactly the plan.

I liked the console - but in a future version, colors and tab complete (latter being the more important) would be nice.

PC WARS by Lafolie 2014-12-12T17:38:00

Well this was a pleasant surprise!

Awesome, how far you got with this game!
I love watching the AI make its moves. It feels almost like there's a second player who's playing the game against with you. Cool!

Some remarks:
I just accidentally finished the round... by clicking while the menu was open. The menu seems to be controllable only with keyboard keys, so that was confusing.
This would be great in a hotseat multiplayer version as well.

Footage by Muush 2014-12-09T06:22:00

Great work. Poor citicens - they were so peaceful!

Too bad you couldn't finish it - I would have liked to see more! Maybe a post-jam upload, after the voting?

I really like the way you see the scene from different persepctives and each perspective teaches you something else about the scene.

If you ever continue on this:
- I suggest you limit the camera movement (I can spin 360° if I want to - that's not realistic for an attached camera)
- On Linux, I can choose screen sizes at the beginning, but if I don't choose a widescreen resolution, a small part of the image is missing on the right (the camera buttons for cam 2 and 4).

Good work!

Apocalypse Screen by victorljs 2014-12-09T16:01:00

I agree on the mouse beeing to sensitive... But congrats on an otherwise good and finished game!

Klieu - Cargo Carrier by chipcaramel 2014-12-12T19:39:00

Great art and great coding!
It works well so far.
Would be cool to see this finished one day - maybe post on the Löve forums?

Zombie City by Samm 2014-12-09T06:43:00

Great idea, but can you add a Linux version for download? The Unity Web-Player isn't available for Linux atm...

Snake Rider by ETHproductions 2014-12-28T17:16:00

The controls are a bit weird sometimes.
And I found the green and yellow coins a little too similar (maybe make the bad ones red?).
Other than that, this is a really awesome entry. I love the idea (Why has no one else thought of this?!).
Solid entry, well done, especially for a first LD!

Growth by solarexplorer 2014-12-09T16:20:00

Hi, nice game idea!

I would have liked to have a trajectory kind of display while dragging, or at least an arrow from the object to the mouse - it would have made the idea of "pulling" the shape more clear.

Side note: Your readme says to run "kivy main.py" - that didn't work for me (Ubuntu). Instead, I had to run "python main.py".
Also, kivy seems to be available in the repositories - so it's actually easier to get it from there (no need for a ppa).

Nice game!

Sol Defender by reveriejake 2014-12-09T15:50:00

Great work. The interface looks very polished!

I thought it was too easy though. I beat all 4 levels at the first try - and for the first two, I didn't even know I could upgrade the towers!

A few explanations would be nice though. Like, why is the 50 000 tower always grayed out? And do the shields damage the attackers, or only block them?

Very solid entry, and pretty!

SheeBall by dieblume86 2014-12-10T15:43:00

Awesome how you can make the ball spin and change direction. Cool upgrades, too!

AntiPlane by Grenac 2014-12-11T11:49:00

Great work.
I'm not too fond of the way the light grows when the level changes. I think some other effect would be nice (right now it kind of looks like a glitch)
Everything else is amazing. I especially love how you introduce and explain the entire game without a word. It makes the player feel "smart" because he figures out what to do "on his/her own".
Well done!

Pieces by XxNiCeBuTtxX 2014-12-12T19:03:00

Ha, got on the high score..?!

Neat, works well.
I like that, for a change, enemies don't kill, they just push (and sometimes even help you if you time things right).

The Lonely Realm of Tom Thaum, the Space Wizard by JJEvil 2014-12-13T10:42:00

Wow, this is not easy!

Well done.
I would have liked a more obvious animation when he can't build, I always tried to build without noticing I didn't have the material. He seems to play the same animation wether he's building or not, and the build count down is too hard to ready or notice in the heat of the battle.

Other than that, great work!

Collectic by Krisjet 2014-12-08T09:51:00

Score: 6140
Great work! Love the sounds and animations - makes the sqares feel really alive!
Also, great work on the teleporters.

Information SuperHighway 1983 by Blobby101 2014-12-12T17:18:00

There's no room to the door :D
I feel locked in!
Also, I dropped the phone on the ground, and can't get it back up because my neck seems to be a little stiff :P

Great entry! ... very well done! This is pretty awesome :)

Asteroid Miner by pbdiode 2014-12-12T18:54:00

Works really well!
Well done.
Only one issue I found, actually: I "solved" the game by using the same method as Gwilym and jangler suggested.
A simple way to stop this is by giving the user limited ammo and then each time you collect a box, add some ammo to the user - then make the goal of the game to destroy all the asteroids.

Asteroid Miner by pbdiode 2014-12-12T18:55:00

Another thing: the triangle looks almost the same from all directions -> hard to tell (without shooting or moving) which way you're currently facing. Maybe make it thinner?

CUBE Clicker by Polyganz 2014-12-08T17:43:00

Noticed the same bug as Liam D.

Still, great work - I played it mainly because it looks great.
I also love the whole "gathering" idea... I might make a game with that as the main gameplay element some time...

Funny fact: I upgraded the first upgrade a few times, just for the heck of it and I'm now at 17,714,700 credits as the cost for the next level (which lets me get 12 credits per click). I just did the maths -> in order for that upgrade to be worth it, I'd have to click more than 1.4 million times. :D

Snowman's Land: SNOVERCHILL by RHY3756547 2014-12-15T10:58:00

Great work on this!
Congrats on finishing a multiplayer game :D
I love how simple it is, yet really fun (and difficult! Even solo, I am dying more than I should...)

One issue: On Ubuntu 14.04, it sometimes hangs after death (and sometimes before the match even starts - the first time I wanted to play, this happend, so I was confused and pressed all sorts of buttons).

At first I found it a little confusing that the ice makes you gain speed and that you can stick to the ceiling - but it doesn't hurt at all.

I'll try to check this out again with some friends!

(P.S. Thanks a lot for the the extensive feedback on our game as well. I wrote a response to it on our page and we already put in a lot of the changes you suggested.)

Legend of Feleria by Dietrich Epp 2014-12-10T14:34:00

Linux binaries would be welcome as well, the screenshot looks gorgeous... :)

Legend of Feleria by Dietrich Epp 2014-12-10T14:34:00

... or build instructions, of course.

Kaleidoscope by Madball 2014-12-28T12:34:00

Great game. It turned out very hard!
Well done. Best part is the level changes. They look really nice.
The difficulty level doesn't increase constantly, though. For example, in the first level you have enemies and in the second, you don't. Maybe switch the order?

I also left a reply to your comment on our game.

Debug Dungeon by veloc1 2014-12-11T11:59:00

Works well on Linux. Only one issue when I leave the map (I didn't intend to - I was pushed outside be the evil purple square!)
The idea and gameplay is nice. The purple squares tend to get stuck, and I was able to get pushed into the walls (had to place a bomb to get back out). Also, some effect when I loose a life would be nice - at first I didn't even realize those squares hurt me.
Still, the mechanic works very well and it's challenging. Well done!
