LD46 — Keep it alive

FlameOver by fancy89 2020-05-02T08:05:55Z

Interesting entry. Controlling the character felt a lot smoother than I expected, and the sound effects were great. Only thing I didn't like so much was that the wind and rain often came at the same time so it didn't really feel like what I did made a huge difference. Felt like I was damned if I did, damned if I didn't.

Keeper of the Flame by nickavv 2020-04-21T19:11:21Z

This was nearly perfect. I grew up on Battletoads. The game was NES like, uncompromising with excellent art and music style to package everything together. I loved this. By far my favorite entry in LD46.

From Dusk Till Dawn by Nikolay Zapolnov 2020-04-21T18:22:40Z

This game was right up my alley. It brought back great memories from my childhood in the 1990s. The general mood of the game reminded me of games like Monster Bash and Castlevania, but with humor. The intro made me laugh.

I also liked the premise of having to bounce the girlfriend's organs around, but ultimately I found that I often failed because of, what felt more like, the level layout than my skills. Like the body parts would just happen to land in a way that made it impossible to progress.

That said, this was one of the highlights of LD46 for me :)

From Dusk Till Dawn by Nikolay Zapolnov 2020-04-21T20:02:53Z

@nikolay-zapolnov I think we all skipped things during this event. It's totally legit :)

Continuity by LogFlames 2020-04-22T17:52:01Z

Interesting idea. Unfortunately I had a really hard time understanding what I was supposed to do. I managed to get to a planet but at first I didn't realize there were bubbles and what that I was supposed to build. I pressed buttons and they just dinged and nothing happened, as I experienced it. But what can you do with such short development time. The music was very fitting the space scene was interesting to look at.

Monster Love by Endurion 2020-04-20T17:59:21Z

Fun game. I liked the concept. I had a bit of difficulty with the fly swatter though. When you use it, there's a gap between you and the fly swatter where nothing happens which makes things harder than they should be. By level 3, there were so many flies it was impossible to keep up. But keep working on this :)

Monster Love by Endurion 2020-04-27T11:43:43Z

@eldar oh..I'll have to give it another go :)

Peck Beach by matfernandestt 2020-04-24T07:10:22Z

This was really cute. Had a Paper Mario feel to it. I didn't understand what I was supposed to be doing though. Here I am, on a beach with enemies I can fight. But why am I fighting them? What am I trying to accomplish?

Apart from that it had an impressive amount of polish, except for the battle music which got old really fast - but what are you gonna do in 72 hours?

Flock for Feast by Antti Haavikko 2020-05-02T07:58:34Z

Very solid entry. Everything felt incredibly smooth, and it was really fun. Good sound and feedback from events. Only thing I didn't like so much was that the tips where behind all the scenery or off screen most of the time, and that's a minor thing. Well done.

Solais by dragonxvi 2020-04-24T21:10:25Z

Great little game. I believe this is my first Pico8 game, and I can definitely see the charm in the system. The game itself reminds me of both the cave parts of Link's Awakening and many Rare games like Solar Jetman and Digger. It struggled a bit with telling scenery from platform, spikes from walls etc. (this coming from a guy whose LD46 entry is made to look like a NES game). Looks like you've adressed those things in the post-compo version. Great experience all in all.

Turtemple by jandourek 2020-04-21T15:30:57Z

I guess I'm not smart enough - what am I supposed to do? I figured out how to pick up the shield and the turtles but I had no idea what to do with anything other than use the shield to prevent me and the turtles from dying...

For Ducks' Sake by GaryS 2020-04-29T12:11:42Z

Enjoyed this a lot. Graphics were cute and the sound of the gnomes just made it. At first I thought they were cute, and after hearing the sound I was like "they're not getting my ducklings those bastards". The number of gnomes that came at you were scaled great as you got the chance to figure out what was going on before everything went crazy.

Advise the King by Arden 2020-04-22T21:44:48Z

Fantastically clever game, and very well made for the short time it was created in. Very polished. This is the first game in LD46 to receive only top marks from me :) Everything was intuitive, well made, polished and most importantly - fun!

The Ill Divinity by Solah 2020-04-27T12:16:14Z

Interesting gameplay mechanics, I liked them a lot. I also found the level design to be nice. Hope you continue working on this and add some more polish :)

Electorite by Fireshake 2020-04-21T15:18:06Z

Cute game. The best thing about it was the level design which I thought was quite good.

Soul Seed by unept 2020-05-10T19:18:51Z

Great game. I was quite impressed with the way this was put together. In most games it stays simple for a while to teach you how things work, but it didn't here - yet the player (or I at least) wasn't overwhelmed. Every step of the game just made me want to see what would happen when the tree had been fed enough. The ambience really fit well with the whole thing too.

I hope you continue working on this. I'd love to see the outcome of that.

Companion by Akadream 2020-04-24T14:31:51Z

I liked this. The graphics are nice and fit the game type, and so do the sounds. Especially the music had a very "dungeony" feel to it. I thought the enemies moved a little too fast compared to how fast you could attack though. I eventually found a rhythm of attack that allowed me to spam attack though, so perhaps you could add an attack cooldown. Other than that, well done.

Horny Rhino by Hozoku 2020-04-23T18:54:55Z

What a gem of a game. Everything was so well put together. My only problem was that the mouse speed seemed to be different than that of my normal speed, so it was really hard for me to play/aim, and made me play less than I would've.

The Appetite of Blaise the Fire by Drunkain 2020-04-21T21:01:04Z

This was amazing. It's like finding fine art in Ikea. And I didn't even play the post-jam version yet :)

Captain Molly by Saering 2020-04-24T13:52:01Z

I made sure to play the LD46 version of course. Very nice game. I see foxes are the enemy in your game, just like they are in mine. There were some minor issues imho. I the enemy projectiles too hard to avoid, and the kitten sound kept playing non-stop after picking up the first one. But that's the kind of thing to expect when a game has to be made in 72 hours. Overall I liked your game a lot.

Support Class by SamuelDeboni 2020-04-22T21:10:41Z

Interesting idea. At first I thought the game froze because when I clicked a spell everything stopped and there was no indication that I was supposed to click on something. That said, I liked this take on the Final Fantasy type game and I hope you will flesh out the game more.

The Big Man of Purgatory by dnich013 2020-04-21T13:38:51Z

This was awesome.

**Good things:**

- Coherent experence

- Nice graphics

- Unique world giving a great mood

**Hiccups (for me at least)**

- The projectiles you're supposed to avoid are the same color as most of what's on the screen so I didn't even see it the first few times and died

- The indicator for which type of hero to capture is very discrete so it took me 3 plays to even see it was there

All in all though, this was great and I found myself really enjoying the fun, but frustrating, mechanics.

My Pet's Dungeon by N.O. Games 2020-04-20T08:18:17Z

Fun little game. The music really brought something to it and made you feel like you were stuck in a dark dungeon. At first I found the game a little confusing. I couldn't figure out how the fighting worked - if I had to do something to attack etc. After a couple of tries I figured it out.

When I did figure it out, I found it very hard. I died rather quickly because I couldn't afford food. Seeing as the pet's lifespan is so short it might've been more fitting to just give the pet a random name.

I really liked the names for the enemies though. I chuckled at Oliver The Skeleton.

Also, when you die the enemy keeps pounding away at the poor little pet :(

Overall, this game is one of the games I will remember when LD46 is done.

Ponk and Sheeply by jerripo 2020-04-20T17:53:19Z

Fun idea, quite challenging. My suggestion would be to maybe make some sort of border around the level as I thought both the sheep and the player would fall off so I spent some time trying to avoid that. But generally I liked it :)

Yes, Mr. President! by HowlingShame 2020-04-20T08:29:35Z

Very interesting game. I can truly say I feel like the mechanics of this game are innovative. I haven't seen them before anyway.

The game was quite clever I think. It had your attention on the crowd all the time, and then all the other things happened so you were forced to remove that attention. I became very hectic, and I like how the crowd moved. Gave a very hectic atmosphere.

The sound was also quite good and fit the game and graphics perfectly.

STEM by Kaleido 2020-04-20T15:20:01Z

Interesting game. I like the concept with the red blood cells and all that. I played it for longer than many other games made for LD46 :) What made me stop was that the play area felt like it had no boundaries, and there were so few nucleotides so I felt like I was looking for a needle in a haystack. That said, I really think this game deserves to be expanded on.

Office, Inc. - Keep your sanity alive! by TheAidency 2020-04-20T11:48:04Z

I like the style and music and everything. It's a fun idea that I feel like deserves to be elaborated on. Unfortunately I'm either just bad or the game is really hard. After less than a minute I die no matter what I do. Perhaps reduce the speed at which problems occur?

Anyway, overall I liked it so not bad :)

Office, Inc. - Keep your sanity alive! by TheAidency 2020-04-23T10:38:15Z

~~@theaidency I think it's bugged :( After a few seconds I was Game Over. After restarting all problems stayed at 0, and then after ~20 seconds I was Game Over.~~

Nevermind, just like in real life you have to remember to drink water

Office, Inc. - Keep your sanity alive! by TheAidency 2020-04-23T10:42:05Z

Ah yes, now I feel like it flows more like a game. Now my mind isn't like "what the hell is going on?" and instead it's "how do I do this so I can keep things in check?" :smile_cat:

Cthulhu: The Cult Must Not Die by LaserPanzerWal 2020-04-25T09:21:13Z

I really liked this concept. The mood was perfect and hit me right in the Cthulhu feels. I had a few problems with the fighting system though. The instructions said something about the cursor changing to red and such, but it seemed completely random when to click and when fighting was actually happening. That said, this was quite impressive for an LD entry. Well done. I hope you keep working on it.

Bob The Bog Roll Defender by Ch4oticAU 2020-04-20T06:25:34Z

Nice game. Reminded me of the indie Dos games I played as a kid in the 1990s.

Pros: - I like the voice overs, they add some nice atmosphere to the game - Cute graphics

Cons: - You can't start the game if you buy a shotgun, but not a pistol

Bob The Bog Roll Defender by Ch4oticAU 2020-04-20T07:02:42Z

@ch4oticau ooh I thought that might be it, seeing as the number of money you started with seemed to be different every time :)

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-20T06:11:58Z

@furfel I don't know who that is, so no :)

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-20T07:24:14Z

@esben-jensen Thanks for the very positive and constructive feedback. I did actually consider placing nests in random places for the eggs, but decided against it as I wanted to be sure I would finish.

@corporation Good point, the walking sound could definitely be lowered.

@tomeks I'll be sure to add that if I update the game

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-20T09:28:25Z

@jk5000 Thanks for the kind words :) I actually tried implementing a fox that would chase you, by changing direction, jump etc. but it became too much of a hassle to do it within the time limit.

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-20T17:37:12Z

@murrzipan I actually agree. Given time, the foxes become fast enough that they can reach the safe platforms but it seems you don't often get that far. I considered removing the safe platforms all together - what do you think?

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-20T21:54:20Z

Thanks @automatonvx + everyone - I've noted down all your feedback as I plan on updating the game after LD46 ends.

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-21T19:35:18Z

@matootsy @digitom @blobo @gamegenesis Thanks so much!

@nickavv Considering how impressed I was with your game, that's saying a lot. It means a lot :smiley_cat:

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-21T19:52:32Z

@hadb Thank you for the kind words :) I've already fixed the the current version. That version will only be released once LD46 finishes though. With this design you will not be safe from the foxes, but you will have much more room to jump over them.

Here's a sneak peek :)

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-04-24T20:45:28Z

@literal-games @theaidency @silkworm-sweatshop @waynetron @spirits @xel @boxedmeatrevolution @nakami + others

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Many of the things that have been brought up in this thread have been invaluable to me. If anyone is interested you can play the latest build here: http://lazernaut.com/games/eggberttest

If you want you can shoot me a PM on Twitter/itch or something with your feedback. Thanks in advance :smiley_cat:

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-05-02T07:31:38Z

@antti-haavikko Wow, thank you for spending so much time on the game :) I'm quite close to getting a post-LD version out on Steam (for free, ain't nobody gonna pay for 5 min. of gameplay).

Some of the features included are no more safe spots, passive points have been removed to encourage egg grabbing. Also, the foxes now have tails. I'm sure they appreciate that.

You're totally right about the animations though. The sprites I made are my version of "programmer art", I mean seriously, this game is the absolute epitome of what I can do graphics-wise lol. Still, one should always strive to improve.

In the future I might add extra levels, enemies, gameplay elements (bring the eggs to nests to score etc.). We'll see what the future brings.

Anyway, I appreciate the thoroughness of your report.

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-05-04T19:19:22Z

@kaeveris Both of those have been addressed in version 1 of the game. You can find it on Itch or Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.battlecat.eggbert) if you wanna see.

The Adventures of Eggbert by BattleCat 2020-05-07T07:37:10Z

@jared-york Thank you for the kind words :) In the beginning of LD46 I tried to create an enemy that would chase you, jumping to the platform you were on and such but it was too troublesome. The updated release actually doesn't have any new enemy types. I'm open to suggestions :)

Loading... by AlexAuragan 2020-05-03T08:36:11Z

Very interesting and well made. Everything felt smooth. My only problem was it took me a long time to figure out what was going on. The glitches had different colors so at first I thought I was supposed to avoid the red ones and stay inside the green ones. After hearing the sound that made, I thought I had to stay under the green ones for a certain amount of time. That didn't seem to do anything. Then I noticed the little dots and figured out I had to collect them. I didn't immediately understand how long I'd have to do that though, as the progress indicator around the player is really discrete so I didn't notice it turning green at first, when picking up dots.

Other than that, you should definitely expand on this.

Keep Pit Alive! by BunnyDen 2020-04-21T07:03:01Z

I have a couple of questions:

1) Who hid all these apples in a cave? and why?

2) How do you train your horse to become a spelunker?

This was a fun and unique experience. There were some things that I noted: the hit box for the horse seemed a lot smaller than the horse and being a big animal it sort of felt like maybe it didn't fit in the whole cave environment.

That said, I enjoyed it. The apple indicator in the top left urged me to keep trying to find all the apples.

Bro Loving: Keep the Bromance Alive by panoramix360 2020-04-21T15:22:31Z

So I can't figure out how to play this game. It wasn't immediately clear what was going on in the dressing room so I just clicked Let's Go. Then I was on the stage and apparently I'm supposed to press the arrow buttons? Presumed it was like Dance Dance Revolution kind of thing but nothing happened when I pressed the buttons, and nothing happened when I didn't?

Bro Loving: Keep the Bromance Alive by panoramix360 2020-04-21T18:10:49Z

Tried it again because I really wanted to get it :) The game is well presented and fun, but ultimately I found it too hard to figure out when to press what. I would be very interested in updates after LD46 though.

Bro Loving: Keep the Bromance Alive by panoramix360 2020-04-21T19:12:10Z

@super-hadoken I was speaking more generally. I missed some feedback on when I pressed buttons at the right time and when I didn't :)

Monster Munch by SilasAdams 2020-04-21T22:29:57Z

How much does it take for the monster to evolve? I swear I must've fed it like 20 of each type and nothing seemed to happen...

The Box by OskarDev 2020-04-22T19:51:39Z

This was a very clever game. I would have liked the robot to move a bit slower though, I felt like I died often because of the way he moved. Still, I enjoyed this game. Well done.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Wilford - Deep Underground by BattleCat 2021-04-27T08:39:36Z

Wow, the feedback from you guys is surprisingly good. Perhaps I demand too much of myself. Glad you guys like it

@kevin-s Yeah I'm not sure why it does that - the best way to get around it I can see is to click the fullscreen icon in the bottom right.

@alec The movement is a bit off, so I don't think it's you. It was even worse before. I tried to make it like in Startropics so you could change direction without moving but I ended up spending way too much time on just the basic movement mechanics.

@eboatwright The salamander is just in the way for now as I didn't have time to make them bite you. The wasps will shoot at you after being able to see you for a while. There was also a 3rd bull like enemy who would charge you if it could see you in a direct line but I wasn't able to get it to recover after charging into a wall, so it just kinda sat there. Decided against making it spawn for now.

Wilford - Deep Underground by BattleCat 2021-04-28T16:58:38Z

@midnightmist Thanks for the kind words :smiley_cat:

DEEPER by eboatwright 2021-04-26T21:11:52Z

Everything was built very solid. The controls were nice, as well as the effects and everything. Felt polished. Unfortunately I found things to be going a bit too fast which made me not want to replay it that much.

Whispers of Life by MidnightMist 2021-04-27T11:41:37Z

Really cute game. The music and the sounds made when whispering make this a cute game and quite atmospheric. The only "problem" I had was that I didn't find it immediately obvious what I was supposed to do without having to read the text but that's it. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Dungeon Slide by DotSquare 2021-04-29T18:20:10Z

I really like the idea. It's a new concept (to me at least) and that's great. Unfortunately it wasn't untuitive to me how to play. I didn't see a connection between walls and movement at first, so for me it just seemed like sometimes I could move down and sometimes not, and I didn't understand why because I didn't see any obstacles. That said, with a bit more polish I think this could be a very interesting puzzle game.

funny slug game by programming_sock 2021-04-26T21:19:47Z

Cute little game. The screenshot of the game hit me right in the nostalgia part of my brain, and so did the game. Even though the level design was simple, it was good. It felt very organic. Couldn't help but smile when I reached the end. Don't know you did it, but you managed to make a slug without eyes cute. So overall, well done :)

Sloopy the Microkiller by SandCastlesStudio 2021-04-27T17:07:45Z

This was great. Everything felt so polished. The game was easy to learn and you immediately knew what to do. Quite fun. Well done everyone on the team :)

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Bonanananza by shieldgenerator7 2022-04-07T12:19:52Z

Cute game. I liked the art style. There were a few things I thought about when playing though:

- From the start there were so many monkies that there was no reason to use the charge mechanic. I quickly ended up just tapping the mouse as fast as possible. - It would be good if the amount of monkies started out small and increased gradually so the player could get a feel for the game and its mechanics - When the monkies died they flew up in the air. With so much going on I had problems telling which monkies to shoot for and which ones not to.

Lava Hop by BarelyEvenGames 2022-04-05T11:10:16Z

Simple, fun and while I've seen many similar games I've never seen this exact formular so well done on that. It was quick to get into, understand what you had to do etc. so great experience :)

Day of the Flame - LD 50 by arya-s 2022-04-05T12:30:21Z

Nice 'n' cute game. Generally a good impression. I had some issues though:

Things I loved - The mechanics of walking, jumping etc. were really good - The fire effect was great - The general aesthetics of the sewer was dark and lovely

Things I struggled with - At first I was stuck because I didn't understand wall-jumping was a thing. - Everything respawned if you exited the screen and came back, making the rubbish much less valuable - A lot of things didn't give much feedback to the player, but that's totally understandable considering the time frame

All in all a very pleasant experience - I really hope you continue developing this

Giraffe o'Clock by Kepsert 2022-04-05T13:20:55Z

Amazing game! Well worth the hype. Surprisingly polished for a gamejam entry. Normally I don't really like this much dialog, but it was done so well and tongue-in-cheek that I loved it. The level flow and such was great, and the controls felt very solid.

As a fellow musician I have to convey my compliments to the chef - the music was amazing

In fact, at some point I almost started feeling like an 8 year old with my NES again. Well done!

I got stuck in the wall btw. Was trying to jump and grab a ledge, got stuck and pushed left and then I could only go down. 2022_04_05_15_16_19_Greenshot.png

Gods of Discord by Ghatazorg 2022-04-07T12:27:19Z

Intersting game. I liked the graphics and the general mood, but unfortunately I did not understand the questions. I figured out that I had to balance the symbols in the top, but I didn't understand how I could predict how the questions and my replies would impact them.

Brace for Impact by Bob Verhoef 2022-04-07T12:10:15Z

Nothing short of amazing. I replayed it several times. It was easy to understand what to do, and the whole feel of the game was so great. Everything just fit together.

God's Rage by LiveInside 2022-04-05T10:22:25Z

I like the concept. Unfortunately it was close to unplayable for me, not to be harsh.

First of all I could not pick up the vase. Nothing happened when I pressed F. I did pick it up once, but I don't know how and I was not able to replicate it. Second, the jumps that had to be performed were so long that it was not possible to see where you were going to land so you couldn't time it.

On the upside I liked the aesthetics and it was somewhat clear what I had to do - I just wasn't able to do it.

LD55 — Summoning

Tristram by Rongo Matane 2024-04-26T21:14:35Z

I'm absolutely amazed. The amount of polish on this game is absolutely insane. The mood was awesome, it was immediately apparent how the game worked even without instructions, and you just wanted to keep playing. As a musician I also really appreciated the work done by Martin.

Summon the Worms! by JoshAnthony1990 2024-04-19T18:48:45Z

I'll be honest - I had a really hard time figuring out how to play, even after reading the instructions. I found it difficult to understand how things were connected. Would have been nice to maybe highlight the things that would be affected when you pointed at something. That said, it was a fun game and I really loved the way the worms danced and the sound effects

Tao by leorean 2024-04-17T18:55:30Z

Absolutely fantastic entry. I found myself going "ooh...ooh nice" constantly as I explored. The level design especially was really good and the pace was terrific. A prime example of teaching the player through gameplay rather than text prompts!

Weedwacker by benjiehotwheels 2024-04-17T19:11:15Z

Really cool game. I liked the idea of a mobile tower defense kinda thing.
