i love it, really immersive it's a very nice game Good job :)

beanslasher 2020-04-20 23:59

This is the best game I have played in the game jam so far! Played all the way through and ONLY failed 46 Times XDDD! Very very fun, and I think you should expand on this, could be for a successful platformer in that style!

thedashdude 2020-04-21 00:02

Great game! Full mechanics and neat puzzles. I wish there was a little spin up time on the fans so I could prepare to use the cover ability.

mccheesebob 2020-04-21 18:27

Very fun puzzle platformer with some enjoyable tunes. Nice job!

jasond 2020-04-21 18:31

Wow - I pitched almost this exact idea to our team, but we decided to go in a different direction. The only difference is that we had the braziers at the start of each level, acting as a kind of checkpoint, and some of the puzzles required extinguishing the torch and then looping back around to re-light it.

Really impressed with how you pulled it off! The graphics/mood are really nice and consistent. The level design is also great - and things are pretty dynamic with the rising water levels etc. I know that kind of stuff can be fiddly to get working, and it's really slick here - great work!

I'm biased towards liking this take on the theme, but I think you totally killed it! Very polished and well-realised.

As far as constructive criticism, it would have been nice to have a more detailed main character sprite, but the silhouette direction you went with works really well stylistically as a stand-in. Some of the platforming (mostly the springs) felt a tad slippery, also.

battlecat 2020-04-21 19:11

This was nearly perfect. I grew up on Battletoads. The game was NES like, uncompromising with excellent art and music style to package everything together. I loved this. By far my favorite entry in LD46.

elbapotsnugg 2020-04-21 21:34

Great game! Love the retro feel, love the music, love the concept. Very polished with some great level designs.

nemogg 2020-04-21 23:36

I like the concept and the execution! The controls are tight and the game is overall very fun to play. My only problem is with the jetstreams. They give you zero notice when they are going to start, and the collision happens before the wind touches the torch. I stopped playing on the "Catwalk" level, when i realize i had to predict the cycles. Shame, cause I really like the overall game :)

convg 2020-04-22 12:45

I really enjoyed this game. The graphics are beautiful and the music fits the game well. The puzzles are not too difficult or to easy and are fun to solve. I only noticed one small bug which caused the x key not to work but after another playthrough it did not occur again.

mkraw 2020-04-22 15:31

good stuff

gal-afik 2020-04-22 15:33

I enjoyed the concept and most of the execution. Your ambiance was spot-on. There were quite a few times that I died because the collider on your player/water is too large. There were plenty of times that I died as soon as the fans started spinning, rather than when I was touching the actual water.

ponypen 2020-04-22 15:35

Great game! It's beautiful, the music fits well and its very fun to play!.. Immersive cool game, you should be proud of making!!

phantomcry 2020-04-22 15:39

This was a fun platformer. Especially liked the pacing and difficulty curve. The color palette you selected is just perfection. It doesn't feel boring, you introduce new elements and explore them. Maybe what I didn't enjoy as much were the controls, it could feel more snappy or you could have more in-air control. Other than that great job!

zyro 2020-04-22 15:44

This game has a great concept and the ideas of the game are explained well through intuitive stages. You can then take this knowledge and apply it to the slightly harder ones. Music is great, graphics are well done, final puzzle is great. Great jam game!

retrome 2020-04-22 15:57

Well made gameplay introduction levels, pretty challenging other levels - fun to play, nice audio and art style. Idea of how main character looks is not very clear :) He is dark to make flame more eye-catching, I think. He looks flat - that catches my eye in some way. Maybe lights and shadows like for traps would make him look more fitting?

nickavv 2020-04-22 16:49

Thank you all for your kind comments! I'm sorry about the frustration over the fans or collider size in general, I agree that a little visual indicator that the fans were spinning up would make them feel more fair. Things to think about for next time around! Cheers

hbocao 2020-04-22 18:58

The art is great, the music as well. The game is pretty good. The levels are clever yet simple. I can totally see you improving this concept into a full game. For my taste, the platforming and movement was a little bit "unprecise", but nothing major at all, just nitpicking. Keep rocking!

shanzhai 2020-04-22 23:11

I really liked this game. Its cute, the music is nice and teaching the player the general concepts through introductionary levels is really nice, especially given the short time you had to put the whole thing together. I have only two things that bothered my, one less significant, the other a little more annoying: The jumpspeed, especially on springs, seems a little too fast in my opinion, but thats alright. The more annoying thing is that the flame went out the exact millisecond the fan turned on, not giving the player a short moment to take a step back or really realize what just happened. It also feels weird because you have the cute little wind-animation which I'd have used to check whether the flame was touched, like: it actually needs to hit the player to kill the flame which would feel way more natural, especially since you can just walk right through them as soon as the fans are shut off (but the wind-animation is still playing). Those minor things aside: A great game, you should be proud of yourself! :)

g12345 2020-04-23 15:34

This is a good looking and nicely built game. I'm not too good with the timing and got stuck quite early, but it's still a good game!

mika-la-grand 2020-04-23 19:41

Good game, I like it. I made it to "updraft", but having to redo that level a bunch gets frustrating. Maybe you can remove some of the sprayers at the end, to make it a bit easier.

miracl 2020-04-23 19:48

Really well polished game, don't mind me if I just show up the criticism I could have had during my playthrough : First I found the character controller a little bit slippery it was a little bit hard to control at first The showers trigger themselves instantly which is kinda upsetting at time, It would be nice to have like a little animation like the propeller starting to rotate before. It happends to me that I died even before the actual water was touching my fire and it was frustrating.

Other than that I think it's an excellent entry, what you did compared to the time we have is amazing, there is art, animation, sounds, two different music, 10 different level with different features, and some teaching. Great great work, keep it up !

nickavv 2020-04-23 19:50

@mika-la-grand @miracl Thanks for your constructive criticism guys, I've definitely understood at this point that I made some parts a bit unfair. I will likely publish an update to the game after the jam ends to ease up some of these things, I think it's most fair to leave it as-is for the time being so people can fairly judge what I was able to do in the time limit! Thanks for playing though and I'm glad you were able to enjoy it despite the challenge!

gamer-fates 2020-04-23 19:54

Awesome game. Theme has been overdone this jam, but I like the adventure platformer aspect

miracl 2020-04-23 19:55

@nickavv Let me know when you have it "fixed". Despise my citicism I made it to the end of the game so it's just minor issues that can be overseen when looking at all your great features !

curleysam 2020-04-23 20:02

Really like this. I played it to the end :) The levels felt well designed and the difficulty curve seemed to really fit. The levels explored the mechanic. Great idea! Cool audio and art also. Well done!

snowycocoon 2020-04-23 20:13

Very nice game. Grpahics, music and gameplay are top notch!

hugo-kieffer 2020-04-23 20:23

this is a neat effective concept, really like the visual and the level design, its a good entry, goodjob!

cvetk0 2020-04-24 19:39

This must be one of my favorite games I played so far in this jam. I love the idea, beautiful visuals and the way the game plays. The amount of gameplay you managed to pack into it in this short time is just amazing as well. The only thing I didn't like that much was the placement of controls, I kind of found it confusing to have the action button below the "keep the flame" one. Because of that I kept mixing up the controls and accidentally killed myself or the flame while trying to do something. But besides this, big congrats! I think this has potential to rank among the highest of all. I really hope to see more from you in the future or even to see this one developed further. Cheers!

nickavv 2020-04-25 00:49

@cvetk0 thanks so much for your kind words, glad you enjoyed it! Sorry the controls weren't great for you, in my main game Song of Asirra I've got a very elaborate system with fully remappable controls but obviously no time to implement something like that here! Just wanted to say that I care a lot about accessibility and in any full title I release it's always on my mind!

savvu 2020-04-26 15:03

Guess who is the best keeper of the flame! ME! This one was asesome to play and I really enjoed it..I am sure it can be further developed. Well done and good luck!

mrleeperry 2020-04-26 16:20

Wow, this turned out great. Love the retro art style, very well executed. The animation of lighting the torch is a rewarding payoff. Just all kinds of great little polish, like the UI, etc... Awesome.

fadrikalexander 2020-04-27 07:50

I loved the game and the puzzled but I don't know why it didn't pull me in the way I expected, other than that the game is solid.

ludipe 2020-04-27 10:54

Loved the concept and the art. I didn't find the levels too engaging though. The jetstreams weren't too deep as a mechanic (wait and run, wait and run, etc) and the game relied on them for most of the gameplay (which I'm sure it's due to the jam time limit). It's all super polised btw. Well done!

mr-field 2020-04-27 15:10

ld puzzle games often become an obtuse hassle to get through, but i thought the puzzles in this were surprisingly fun to figure out. the few of them that there were

my only real nitpick is that i wish the elevators stood out a bit more, as i'd always fail to realise what they are my first time around and submerge.

:)

2020-04-30 13:31

Nice platformer! I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/U94ABx1ev3Y

duke 2020-05-03 18:27

Very very good. Tight controls, great platforming physics, awesome art and fitting sound effects and music to boot. Very polished all around. Great entry! The mechanics were fleshed out and the level progression very well designed to teach the player each and every new addition. Very impressive. The only thing that I would criticize is the difficulty. Failing is very easy and being reset to the start can be frustrating when being thrown in an unknown situation and dying. The levels aren't all that long but often include waiting and standing around which makes replaying the levels very tedious. Maybe adding checkpoints would help in some of the levels to reduce possible player frustration. But thats really a minor issue and easily fixed with a little more time invested in level balancing and play testing.

All in all, very impressive entry. Especially considering you made this alone.

ellian 2020-05-12 17:55

Man, that felt great; The way the music changes completely once you're out of "the tutorial levels" immediately makes you know it gets real, the mechanics are fun and it just plays really well. My only wish is that you wouldn't immediately lose if you touch a bad thing, like, maybe have just a second of reaction time so you can course correct or do something; it feels a bit punishing as it is. But really, amazing job!

kiln 2020-05-12 19:01

I loved the music, really gave me a Zelda-vibe. I felt like I was in a dungeon in the original NES Zelda which is definitely a huge plus for me. The mechanics are solid. I failed a few times but I never really felt like it was the game's fault, which is good. The art style was good. I liked the added touch of the grates in the background actually dumping water into the room, I thought that was nice. The "Flame Doused" and "Brazier Lit" animations were also well done.

I think my only slight criticism might be just the control scheme is a little off, but that might just be a me thing. Using the arrow keys was fine, but having my fingers on A, S, and X seemed a bit off. Maybe something like Z, X, C might do better, or any combo where all your fingers are on one line on the keyboard, I don't know. Clearly I'm just nitpicking at this point. The game overall was great as-is.

joe40001 2020-05-12 19:24

Great game, beat it with 20 failures. Very good level of polish. You could probably add a few more levels easily but impressive none the less. I'm really jealous of how good you are at art, music, and sound.

nickavv 2020-05-12 19:30

@ellian Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it! @kiln honored to be compared to Zelda, and sorry about the controls, that's the kind of thing just a little play-testing would have helped me with but jams ya know? Glad you enjoyed though! @joe40001 thanks a lot for the kind words, glad you liked the art/music that much :) I'm no professional so it makes me happy to hear I can impress people haha
