LD23 — Tiny World

Who stole my pixels?!? by matheus23 2012-04-27T23:31:00

This was really good and well balanced.

Just the right amount of tasks to keep you busy and each task is as important as the next.
I found the controls a little awkward and sound would have been nice, but you achieved quite a lot in 48hrs and overall I really liked it.

If you are going to take this further after the comp (I think you should, this is the start of something very cool), I suggest changing the focus from a single character to a small village god-game style. You could then use mouse control to set them tasks like cut wood, build turrets & place blocks. The population could increase over time (based on size of island or something) allowing you to do more concurrent tasks as you progress.

Anyway sorry for the epic novel of a comment but you ignited my imagination with this one and I thought I'd share my thoughts.

Nice job!

Petri by Tomalla 2012-04-29T11:15:00

Nice concept, liked the level designs and game play mechanics.

Well done.

Electron Cloud by Evilion 2012-04-23T11:15:00

Love the intro, really gets you in the mood. Gameplay is quite original and fun. Well done!

Skully's Microscopic World by Skully 2012-04-27T08:44:00

Wow, so addictive. Booyah!

A Theft of Mass by uberneen 2012-04-23T13:05:00

Loved it, I got down to the coal level before a clumsy descent had me eating rock!
Cool idea and executed well.
I'll be playing this again and also showing it to friends as a challenge activity.

Kerbal Space Program meets Terraria? :)

Save Your Planet! by SFX 2012-04-27T09:56:00

LOL, I loved this, the music got me pumped and was perfect for the pacing of the gameplay.

It felt like I was back in an 80's arcade with a group of kids gathered around waiting for me to run out of coins so that they could try beating the high score.

QBik by Misaka42 2012-04-23T09:20:00

Nice puzzle, had me thinking. Liked the sketchpad artwork. Had some character movement glitches that took a little away from the fun though. Overall I liked it, good work.

Protector by kiswa 2012-04-27T08:51:00

Quite innovative, well done.

I Should Clean My Keyboard by cmo7 2012-04-24T23:24:00

Loved it, nothing more I can say. Well done on all counts.

Hungry Ants by Dew 2012-04-29T10:59:00

I really liked this, had a little trouble getting it going, but I just downloaded the source package and ran it locally from there.

Played this for over an hour, trying out different strategies, 2 queens, more egg rooms, more storage, etc. and I think either the enemies are too strong or the soldiers are too weak because one termite will sometimes kill 3 soldiers without problem. Maybe the enemies could despawn after a few minutes to let you get back on your feet?

Other than this, excellent job, I really got into this game.

My Wonderful World by @daniel_sundberg 2012-04-29T13:46:00

I like that you made an android game.

On my Galaxy Ace I could only see the apartment building, hospital and factory. Played with it for a little not sure what was going on, but looking at your screenshot I see that I should have had a few more buildings to play with. I have scored based on the part I could play.

Nice job though, it's just a shame that I couldn't play it properly.

Lost Lapootah by orgarus 2012-04-24T11:15:00

Yeah, this was good.
Not at all what I expected from the title screen.
My only gripe would be the need for more audio (sploshy walk sounds maybe) and the corner collisions.

Stuck In the DOM world by Krilivye 2012-04-28T12:17:00

Didn't do much in my browser, but I'm intrigued to see what the completed version turns out like.

a SMALL problem by sirGustav 2012-04-23T13:16:00

Nice, could see lots of potential there for more levels. Nice idea bouncing on the rat, that one big row of tacks took a while to get, but nice sense of achievement once it was done.
I'll bet that if the scientist ever gets back to full size he'll put all those damned thumb tacks away in a draw!

Home is where the robots are. by greg20man 2012-04-25T10:10:00

You dang robots get off of my lawn!
Was amusing, but needs sound.

Oh No, Tiny Rover! by decultured 2012-04-29T13:24:00

Yeah same problem, Windows package contains Mac files. Couldn't play it sorry.

Immunity by Waffenwars 2012-04-23T12:12:00

wow, rts cellular automata tower defence, now I've seen everything. I was a little confused at the start (I did read the instructions, but I'm the learn by doing type), so I was plodding along building resource blocks getting into the groove, when OMG! Pathogens!! clickclickclick clickclick clickclickclick, what did the instructions say?? clickclickclickclickclick.

Maybe a tutorial mode would help us mortals out a little :) Don't get me wrong, I liked it and scored accordingly. Nicely done.

I'll be coming back to this one to play again later when I've got more time to learn it.

Invaders From Space by smvilar 2012-04-28T11:38:00

Very nice, I only wished for a melee attack to get the guys that get in too close and are hard to shake off :)

But, just as all good games do, this game presents a nice fun challenge which takes a few tries to get the hang of.

Well done!

Bugs by schizofunky 2012-04-24T11:00:00

Nicely done. I'm a fan of stealth games and this plays well. Wish there were more levels!

C:\ Infected by Kevin_R_K 2012-04-25T00:06:00

Sorry, wouldn't work for me (java 1.6 here).
The gameplay description sounded promising though.

Phi by Thomas Bowker 2012-04-28T00:29:00

Liked exploring the tiny world and finding the cryptic clues laying around. The day/night cycle having an effect on the visibility of the stars was a clever game mechanic really added to the atmosphere.

LOL I was thinking like a programmer and thought it was binary encoded, but it just wasn't working (Where's the pole with a VII on it? damn it!). Then I started thinking like normal people and solved the puzzle.

Very well done.

Phi by Thomas Bowker 2012-04-28T00:38:00

Also, just so you can laugh at how much I was over thinking it. Just before I worked it out I thought maybe I had to use binary algebra to combine them into the answer. I even started a truth table... Oh man I need to get out more...

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-23T10:16:00

Thanks for the feedback. The slow down is intentional to make you think about keeping up momentum by choosing your jumps well.

I tried putting a reset option and multiple levels but I was learning the basecode framework on the fly and things started getting quite crashy and buggy, so I chickened out and left it as single level.

I had massive plans for this one (guns, knives, bad guys that hurt you, mario-style platforming. But yeah, none of that happened. :)

Anyway thanks for playing and rating!!!

Also if anyone finds the secret message at the end, let me know.

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-23T10:20:00

@jeroenimooo yeah, princesses huh? always in trouble...

The getting stuck on other characters is like they are trying to hold you back so that you can't save her.

kinda frustrating I know, maybe I should have added some kind of effects to let the player know it's intentional.

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-23T13:58:00

I experimented by using a rigid body physics engine for the character movement, everything is controlled by adding force vectors.

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-23T21:09:00

Lol, yeah I changed my username, didn't update in the comments. Oops! Sdwil2k5 is me on this same account. Sry for confusion.

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-24T23:17:00

@evilseanbot Sorry that you had a problem. Could you tell me which library it was complaining about?

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-27T09:31:00

steamgirl said: "One problem I ran into is that on the bit where the evil lemmings were one on top of another, the second one stood on top of my head so I couldn't even jump out of the crowd."

LOL, I love hearing about things like that. I used an unseeded rand() function for placing the bad guys, so each player gets different attack waves. I got the double-up guys a few times while testing and I thought it was cool, didn't think about the possibility that one could step on your head and stay there.

This game really has a life of it's own.

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-04-28T13:11:00

cool. did you jump?

Lemming Apocalypto by 10WonXero10 2012-05-12T07:52:00

Sorry about that Raptor85, I didn't test for other platforms. Thanks for giving it a try though!

Game of anthills by azmaeve 2012-04-23T14:09:00

I'm not sure what just happened but I was victorious.
It seems like there is a lot of technical brilliance going on in the background but it is hidden from the player. Would be better if the simulation ran slower and there was a way to monitor progress and make live tweaks to the strategy here and there to affect the outcome.

Tiny Garden of Hope by steamgirl 2012-04-23T13:36:00

Surreal, emotional journey of a robot that finds companionship with plants on a tiny square planet.

Nice work! Very original.

The Collector by blob 2012-04-25T00:01:00

Wow, this is so good. Reminded me of the old school arcade platformer called Wardener. Well done!

If I might make a suggestion though, would be cool if your fireballs traveled on an arc instead of a straight line. this would make it easier to target enemies on higher and lower platforms.

Brainfected by Foxtacy 2012-04-24T23:35:00

Whoa, need the reflexes of an 80's Galaga champion for this one. :)

Nice back story and game concept, was a little too hard for me though, would have preferred a few easy attack waves with a progressive ramp-up.

But that's just me, it hasn't affected my scores, I liked it!

Unworld by FlowerPower 2012-04-27T09:19:00

The game ran for me (win7 x64, nVidia video card) but I'm not sure what I should be doing.
Is there a spacecraft or character that I'm controlling? All I could see was the words but didn't know how to dodge them, nothing I did seemed to affect anything.

I did like the audio and concept though, so you get points for that! I also learned that 'echap' is french for 'escape' :)

But overall I'm confused...

Toad Warrior by SpaceToaster 2012-04-25T04:14:00

Nice game, a little tricky.
Would work well on mobile devices, actually you could probably charge real money for this on iTunes/Play.

My only concern: Where is the guy's pants? LOL, it disturbs me to think that there might be an uncensored version out there somewhere :)

Little City by dustmyte 2012-04-25T01:20:00

LOL, that was good.
"Space Meat or Regular Meat: Yes." O.o

Good concept you got going there.

I didn't understand the random world explosion though? Did I do something wrong and died or was that just how it ends?

Planet Life by Sos 2012-04-24T12:25:00

I have the powers of Bootman! LOL, love this game Sos.

I was digging it back when you released the first progress build, I spent ages as a block running around 'Booting' all the other blocks.

It has such a bleak story, but this game just makes me smile when I play it. That's what a game should do, well done!

Cruel space by Stalker_23b 2012-04-23T09:41:00

Very nice. My favorite so far.

My First World by Dark Acre Jack 2012-04-25T02:08:00

This is cool.
Graphics & music work well.
I like that there is a clear goal.
Difficult to master though and unfortunately I don't have the patience to dig right into it just now (yes I'm slack).
I'll be coming back to this after the comp for a few replays, that's for sure.
I want to get to space!!!

12 Days in a Snow Globe by derdragon 2012-04-24T12:02:00

Was cute when the wife jumps for joy at getting a present. Nice pixel art.

Tiny Tempers by Bezza 2012-04-23T10:40:00

Was nice to be able to travel between planets and explore the surface. Cool concept.

I did have a lock-up crash on web version when firing at a turret from directly above looking down on the second planet.

[Darkness Creeping] by AD-Edge 2012-04-29T13:05:00

This has an awesome feel and story to it. Loved the shambling movement and massive camera bob, makes you really feel like a weakened prisoner making a break for freedom.

Shrunkit by MagnesiumNinja 2012-04-23T13:45:00

Cool puzzler.

Wunderworld by ratking 2012-04-23T11:25:00

It's a game in kit-form, I love it.
some options to modify control settings would be good, I found them a little sensitive in 1st person mode. Nicely executed.

Pixel World by RevoluGame 2012-04-23T11:44:00

Nicely done. Good humor and level design. I played this longer than I thought I would because of the character progression and little changes that were happening.

Mini-Worlds and Monocles by Zed 2012-04-24T09:16:00

I like your use of bad guys as hindrance instead of weapon. I used a similar idea with my game. As always your style and sense of humor shines through. Just one question though; Why does the spaceship look like a hat? :-P

Subatomica by SFBTom 2012-04-23T11:05:00

Awesome!! Quite original and difficult to master but not too much.
Some audio indication of field strength by changing the pitch or something would really top it off.

Snow Globe Kerfuffle by j_peeba 2012-04-23T13:22:00

Very cool concept and well put together. fun to play.

Untitled, So Far by angrygeometry 2012-04-24T11:31:00

Wow... hypnotizing. What just happened. I like it.
I think if David Firth were to make a Zelda game, this would be it.

Unterholz by wzl 2012-04-23T12:28:00

I don't know that I'd call it a game but wow, so intriguing. I played with it for ages.
Soundtrack is good also.
Well done, my mind is racing thinking of gameplay possibilities using this idea.

Nano Ascension by mikelovesrobots3 2012-04-28T04:26:00

That art style!
Love the back-chatter from the programmer, adds a lot of depth to the world.
The camera got buried inside geometry a few times and made it hard to see what was going on, but it's only a minor gripe.

With a little polish and a longer story, I'd pay real money for this game.

Tiny War Of The Worlds by galman 2012-04-28T13:27:00

The upgrade system is well done and the battles are fun.
The music is awesome and gave nice atmosphere.

Gravity Force 3 by refreshgames 2012-04-29T13:20:00

Yeah, this rocked!
Well done.

Gulliver by DDRKirby(ISQ) 2012-04-29T12:01:00

Really good, loved the recursive shrinking idea.
Music is awesomely retro.

Graphics could be better, but I think it's just that with music this good, you want the graphics to go along with it. :)

The Cube Realms by Zoomyzoom 2012-04-24T23:12:00

Still getting java error. Sorry Zoomy, I don't want to install java 7 so unfortunately I can't play your game. Was looking forward to it too, looks like the kind of game I'd like.

You should add java 7 as a requirement into your description.

If you post another build that works for java 6, I'll be happy to try again.

The Cube Realms by Zoomyzoom 2012-04-25T02:42:00

Hey you know what, screw it. I downloaded 1.7 and tried it out. I'd hope someone would do the same for me.

Good music (why leave it off by default?).

Liked the design for level 1, but it seems like you rushed levels 2 & 3 out. But hey you have more levels than me :)
Controls were a little twitchy but not to hard to control.
A little animation for the character would have been good.

I think with a little more polish you would have quite a good game here.

Green Invasion by Kableado 2012-04-26T13:07:00

Liked this one, cool idea. Just wished for sounds.

Mage Duel by Kitch 2012-04-25T10:30:00

Cool game, I liked it.

Tiny Galaxy by Tifu 2012-04-27T13:49:00

This was awesome, loved it.

Lost by elektron 2012-04-25T00:36:00

I liked this a lot, played it though till the end with a time of 12:41.

Excellent level design. A few teasing glimpses of the goals here and there kept me motivated to keep exploring and the puzzles were easily understood.

The music gave a stark lonely feeling of being lost and made me connect with my character, I couldn't stop playing until I got the little rectangle home, poor little guy.

Graphics, schmaphics. Non-blocky graphics would have ruined this. It's exactly as it should be.

Well done!

Tiny Conflict by Redream 2012-04-25T10:01:00

I liked this, cool idea.
I feel bad for the people on those planets though :(

Pirates VS Aliens by CoOz 2012-04-23T10:47:00

Down with aliens! Oh, where are they? I did get a few though which was fun. Maybe up the spawn rate.
Massive props for attention to detail, both red & blue shifted stars, nice touch.

Congratulations Doc, it's a shrink ray! by De10ter 2012-04-23T12:41:00

Good idea to have them shrink. LOL at jumping on them to squash them dead, a squishy sound effect for that would have been awesome!

Pixel Progression by pighead10 2012-04-24T10:17:00

Liked the concept. It ran ok for a while but after 100 or so points it crashed while fighting an enemy pixel.

I think 2 moves per second is a little slow, either some power ups or a gradual speed up would make it more exciting.
