Pretty fun! I didn't realise the rock formations didn't collide, and was thinking I just had legendary control of the sub.

Some rocks to crash into would up the difficulty level for sure. To up the 'bullet-hell' anti, maybe more creatures / chains of objects like in traditional schmups.

jedemac 2021-04-26 12:05

I like the invulnerability frame disguised with flares :)

I felt like I was doing pretty good on my first run and then I saw the score: 640m ^^

A turbo to increase the scrolling speed for when you feel confident could be a nice addition, as of now the time it takes to reach the bottom seems to be the same everytime, and does not change based on how well you are doing. Maybe I’m wrong ? It would also make starting over less of a hassle.

Also did you decide against putting a depth meter while playing ? Seems weird to have to die to know how good you’re doing.

Great quality and enjoyable, my next runs are doing better, I want to reach the bottom before I give it a rating :D

It takes forever tho, I played for more than 30minutes before I suicided because I wanted to know how deep I was : 8888meter

locustjin 2021-04-26 12:54

Hi, I increased the descent speed and added a simple depth indicator. Thanks for comments :)

lorwon 2021-04-26 13:30

The game is fun but yes I think that de descnent speed is still too slow. Good job overall :) :)

massillon-magic 2021-04-26 15:22

Hi, I enjoyed your game it was a good idea  I agree with the other comments the game the bottom is really deep and you are not reallly fast but it is really fun to play

shigor 2021-04-26 15:26

For some reason doesn't work for me in Chrome (stuck on unity load), works in Firefox though

arnold-990 2021-04-26 15:46

good mood mood good really cool game

rhoff95 2021-04-26 15:48

Cool game! I ran out if missiles and would have liked more.

maximbegunov 2021-04-26 16:21

Really great visuals and audio, not much else to say:)

youthfulidealism 2021-04-26 17:17

I particularly liked the audio. It was very atmospheric.

panzershrek 2021-04-26 18:21

Quite oppresive game, but I like it, it has a really cool atmosphere ! Really clean and smmoth but it tends to get hard early.

jatdev 2021-04-26 18:33

Nice game, the difficulty is quite high (I've never been particularly good at these types of games though). I really liked the graphics and the kinda eerily sounding audio, well done!

ryzy27 2021-04-26 18:47

Screen borders damaging you suprised me, not sure if it was necessary.

Art and audio are great, I really felt like I was going into uncharted depths :)

lamamour 2021-04-26 18:49

Cool audio and ambiance! I like the "depth" on the right, it's a really clever UI. I honestly didn't survive very long ahah

rein 2021-04-26 19:09

It wasn't really clear that the edges of the level damage you, and they seem to extend farther in than you can see. There were a few times I picked up a health pack and instantly took damage with nothing nearby. I think the enemies being able to turn and home in on you makes it a bit unfair as the level progresses and your opportunities to maneuver are really limited. Solid execution though.

scott-redrup 2021-04-26 20:00

This is a really cool game, although it is quite hard and is it even possible to get to the end? It has a great mood though and is quite relaxing to play. I admit with other commenters that the edges do seem to come out further that the visuals suggest, it would be good to have a few more lives too.

mero 2021-04-26 20:59

a simple game

ossuboi 2021-04-26 22:53

Nice job! The sound and visuals were great. Very addicting :D

traffle 2021-04-27 00:34

The dodging was quite fun! The enemy movement was really quite brutal though how they all looked like they were just drifting along but then would suddenly swerve towards you as you passed. it also took me a while to figure out the collectibles, but they were fun once i did.

michael-harris 2021-04-27 02:16

Fun stuff! The mood was definitely great. The visuals were good. Nice little relaxing game. Goo job!

flaquero 2021-04-27 02:26

it has good graphics and audio, maybe the gameplay is a little slow

arancutter 2021-04-27 02:55

Very fun! I didn't realize I wanted to play a shoot 'em up with sharks before this :) The graphics look really nice and the sonar pings definitely create an interesting atmosphere.

Like others have said, I thought I was doing pretty well before I saw how deep I had yet to descend. Not that this is a bad thing, but I wish there were more power ups or various weapon upgrades. It would be nice to have more creatures with unique behavior. I also thought it was a little frustrating not being able to collect power ups during invulnerability frames.

Great work, really enjoyed it!

mharitsnf 2021-04-27 03:40

It's a great game! thanks for making this. I think it would be nice if you can somewhat dodge the creature's attacks, I find it kinda hard to evade it. But it's really fun, I enjoyed it!

isthatyounoah 2021-04-27 03:41

This one is really fun and well polished!!

gno-evenimente 2021-04-27 08:13

This was good. Gameplay is very simple, but works well. Really does give you the feeling of descending deeper.

advay 2021-04-27 09:37

Very well made game! Very polished, and would have been nice to know beforehand that the rock-walls are dangerous. Fine submission. I even thought of a similar idea but went with something totally different ;)

ondy1985 2021-04-27 10:01

Great game, very similar to my own, which just proves it is a great concept :-D I like the look and feel on your game better, though. Good job!

yuri-yakovlev 2021-04-27 12:58

I like the graphics. I think the game will be more interesting if the enemies will be more aggressive.

kel 2021-04-27 13:24

sfx and atmosphere are very impressive, great work!

abplayz 2021-04-27 13:34

Sick game dude

gabbeeder 2021-04-27 14:03

Good game! It's fun for a while. And it's pretty moody with the ambience and pinging sound from the submarine.

cyanilux 2021-04-27 14:21

Nice game! Got down to 4905m, so almost halfway. Visuals and sound are great.

2021-04-27 14:22

Hey guys, congratulations on the publication!

The game is perfectly balanced with the proposed theme!

It reminded me a lot of games from my childhood, which is great!

I had fun trying to dodge the sea animals, use the items and collect them!

The only thing I missed was a tutorial at the beginning; the first time I played it I didn't know if I should use the mouse or "wasd" and I kept trying and figuring out how to use "the bomb"; until I hit the "space"

But anyway, I liked it very much congratulations :smile_cat:

joskerdu 2021-04-27 15:17

Great stuff... I love that we did a similar concept and similar mechanics but in different perspectives. Cheers.

recyx 2021-04-27 15:38

Really liked the atmosphere! The music, the ticking of that hazard light and everything getting darker and darker made my palms sweaty. The furthest i got was 5500 meters. Did you ever reach the bottom? What happens whe you do?

Good job on your first LD game!

anton-savinov 2021-04-27 15:47

So smooth it's almost tactile. Good job.

skaminska 2021-04-27 17:22

Simple, relaxing game. I think i would be great on mobile

joonamo 2021-04-27 17:53

That audioscape was excellent, I really felt like I was diving deeper and deeper!

cubex 2021-04-27 18:05

Nice! I love the ambience

ranchoman 2021-04-27 18:26

Great audio, super clear how everything worked! Felt really well put together.

matheus-madtrilhas 2021-04-27 19:44

768m! Very fun game. Congratulations to the team!

nyxkn 2021-04-27 19:48

Very *immersive* experience :) Loved the sound, cute graphics. I wished the torpedos had a more forgiving hitbox, and that the depth counter would move a bit quicker! Spot on with the theme.

bernardex 2021-04-27 20:17

Heyoo! Nice entry! This game is looooong, I got deeper and deeper, like 7000m but the "depth" interface was just in 5 units, so you definitively nailed the theme of the jam :D Had a lot of fun with the mechanic of dodging the obstacles, specially with the spice of them come after me if I got too close. Good job! Oh, and the sound design deserve a special hug for bringing the mood to the game.

maximegammaitoni 2021-04-27 20:40

Excellent very addictive game, 1943 put in depth, I think a little well chilled music could improve the experience however the sonard is still important for the atmosphere, so I understand the choice. good work team !

tenthdalek 2021-04-27 21:10

This ambience gave me chills! The lonely reverberated sonar beep really builds up some terrifying mood! Great graphics too, simple but efficient enough :)

mind0o 2021-04-28 02:28

I love the mood and atmosphere of the game. The game is solid and the controls feel great. Although I wish the side walls were more distinct, I found myself going into them by accident too often. Also i wish the ship was faster and there was more enemy variety. Very good game and sound.

nardandas 2021-04-28 04:34

Best I got was 3446 m! The basic loop was really good, I found a lot of the time when I died it was as a result of a chain of thing where I got hit, so I tried to get to a health pickup, so I got hit more, and so on. Perfectly stressful! I did think it was a bit slow and the depth counter was a bit too long, but overall well done!

crowvax 2021-04-28 07:09

The atmosphere is fantastic, and the dynamics are solid. Since it is simple to learn how to play, it is ideal for casual gamers. Overall, a fantastic game.

thestoff 2021-04-28 07:17

Very nice ambience! I think my main thought is it could use pacing adjustments. I noticed a few said that it takes a long time to get to the bottom and I somewhat agree. On tp of that you could vary up the enemy types more and vary them sooner. Having the amount of enemies and types of enemies change over time would help the experience feel less repetitive. Also maybe weapon powerups could be cool. Admittedly I couldn't reach the bottom so maybe that stuff is in there and I didn't see it but you could make it come up sooner if it does.

grangerer 2021-04-28 09:34

Great game. Main criticism is the pacing.

pepel 2021-04-28 11:02

nice!

rate our game $) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/downstair

lelek-hunor-kadosa 2021-04-28 11:27

4500 meters! :D It was pretty atmospheric, and relaxing and stressful at the same time. I like that the enemys starts following you if you get too close...It made my hearbeat explode sometimes XD My only problem with your game is that it's way too long. But other then that I enjoyed it, well done!

xpycm 2021-04-28 11:42

I liked your game. Because it is similar to mine =P But your sharks are very aggressive! My best result is about 1500.

attala 2021-04-28 12:52

Bonus point for soundscape/mood. Enjoyed this, difficulty is right where it should be :) Good job.

2021-04-28 13:09

good game) I like the funny angry frogs) it's a bit difficult for me (my maximum is 1117 m), what's waiting for at the bottom?

elemental-zeal-game-studios 2021-04-28 14:01

Ended up playing for way too long but only got to 3590m. Really needs to progress much faster, as you see all the game has to offer quickly, so it's all about execution after that, which gets too repetitive over such a long time.

I would have liked for the sharks to face the direction they are swimming better, it looked like they were just sliding along.

Otherwise though the idea and atmosphere was good.

Nice job

finn-tr 2021-04-28 14:30

Really good game! The atmosphere is great and I really like the submarine little animation when moving sideway, everything feels super polished. Overall this is a very solid entry! Great work!

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-28 18:31

Great work, I like the Sunless Skies/Sea aesthetic a lot and you used it well! The game can be addicitive, making me to want to relaunch a run every time I die I think that the impossiblity to take a pick up during the invicibility time after being hit is a bit frustrating tho

Overall a great entry that we have here :)

omg-blackbeard 2021-04-28 22:42

Simple, decent, relaxing but at the same time keeping you alert. LocustJin (@locustjin) , and Szymon OGD (@szymon-ogd) Nice work.

edmar-filho 2021-04-29 06:18

I like that the item drops make it so you can't just ignore most of the screen as it's something that happens in games like this with too much horizontal space. The enemies turning around to bite you was an interesting touch but a little frustrating that it's hard to shoot the diagonally moving ones when they get too close.

The bar on the side made want to reach the bottom, but how long is this? Is there a bottom? I swear I was going for over 10 minutes and the bar on the side didn't seem 25% full yet so I just gave up and ran into the sharks, ended at 5.8k depth.

azakharov 2021-04-29 08:49

I like sound and minimalist graphic.

xpoho 2021-04-29 10:05

smiley405 2021-04-29 10:50

Really fun to play game. The game gets more interesting as you go deeper & deeper. Wished there were more missiles, dodging those sea creatures was fun aswell as tough. Overall - had a great fun playing it till the end.

etrealjunior 2021-04-29 13:51

Congratulations on the game, what I usually call the Jams "mission given, mission accomplished" They attended to the theme, but as it was predictable for this Jam most games, would be digging or sea, so you would have to create a differentiator in your game, my suggestion for future upgrades would be a darker environment with fewer enemies, depending on what it was descending marine animals may vary due to depth, you could control when you descend and do secondary things to collect objects on the way, I wish luck and success in your work, I will be very happy if you can evaluate my game, a big hug!

skleembof 2021-04-29 20:04

Nice little game, simple fun with nice graphics and sfx.

It would benefit from more gameplay elements though, like tight caves you have to navigate through, or passages you have to open with the torpedoes.

The main issue I have with the game is the pacing. I played the game for a few minutes, got swarmed by enemies, was having a good time, then I looked at the depth meter and noticed that I barely made any progress. And knowing that the ship moves slower the deeper I went killed any desire I had to continue. You would need to add something to reward the player for going deeper. Increasing the speed wouldn't make more sense realistically, but it would make the game more fun.

amerigo-gazaway 2021-04-29 20:44

Love the art style, UI and sound design. a nice twist on the classic space shooter mechanics but underwater.

deadmanjw 2021-04-30 08:24

This is a really nice game, with a little tiny bit more polish it would be great. The thing seems missing are the controls as had to figure those out and some background music. Great work though given the time.

medocapra 2021-04-30 09:59

Really enjoyed the muffled sounds to create the feeling that you are actually underwater. I think the controls weren't very responsive, but I think that would be my only complaint. Really nice game overall!

metalfox-dioxymore 2021-04-30 12:20

Simple but yet effective game ! Gameplay-wise I would have prefered if there was a way to tell the player which animals were aggressive and which one are not. For exemple, having all sharks attacking the players and jellyfishes just wandering around. Here, it seemed random, so I didn't really knew if I had to launch my missile or not before it was too late.

The sound design is nice, the muffled sounds really contribute to the atmosphere, but I would have loved a little, tiny, background music ^^.

Overall, a really nice entry !

youhou 2021-04-30 18:41

Arts and music are simple, but game becomes quickly boring. Maybe you should implement a stage system to add some pace. Overall the game is fun to play, and I had to make some games before going deep enough to feel I won't go further. Nice work :)

chrissx2 2021-04-30 22:26

Simple yet quite playable game. Could add some feel of incoming/increasing danger

vesper 2021-05-01 13:40

Ahh, this was so addictive. I had to make myself stop playing in the end.

A simple idea but very well executed, and the sounds really enhanced the atmosphere in a big way. My only complaint is that I would have liked a tiny bit more leeway on the hull meter (or some way to upgrade that through point scoring as you went further down?), but the balance worked pretty well all things considered.

The depth meter also shows a crazy amount of distance to cover, so making the difficulty more graduated or slowly introducing new elements as you go deeper could be a nice way of keeping the gameplay fresh. But overall it was smooth and fun. Good job!

fabula-rasa 2021-05-01 21:39

The soundscape creates an ominous atmosphere that I quite liked. Graphics are really nice, colors go together well and the art style is consistent. Controls feel nice and it's a polished experience.

But the depth requirement to get to the end is insane ;). I never manged to get there. Also, as the player has to go such a long way, it would be nice to introduce some variety. Maybe some different buffs that appear deeper (double/triple torpedoes, temporary damage absorbing shields - something of that sort). More enemy types would also be nice. Or you could shorten the way to go in the jam version to avoid the gameplay becoming stale :)

Overall, a nice work on the game!

whitecubegames 2021-05-02 08:18

Nice work!

noteworthy 2021-05-02 09:18

Really good entry! Ran real nice and I got to a depth of 1449. :D The audio is real nice, did you make the reload noise with your mouth? haha. Loved the use of effects, the Submarine model was really good looking too. Great game!

goldenevolution 2021-05-02 09:40

Simple shoot 'em up type game with some limits of torpedos and oxygen. Very nice submission!

korfi 2021-05-03 01:23

Nice game! It felt like reaching the bottom was a bit out of my reach. I really liked the ambiance that the sound design with the graphics created.

olddog 2021-05-05 00:23

Nice one ;

alessandra 2021-05-05 03:31

The ambience was really nice and appropriate, and the sharks / pink creatures gave me the creeps! Although I did kind of felt bad shooting the marine life... and wasn't entirely sure if we were supposed to? I really liked the mechanics of moving the sub, and it was satisfying to land missiles. I found the marine life proximity/pursuit dynamic to be challenging. I also really liked how there were several different stats (oxygen, life, and missiles) and the difficulty of getting them felt appropriate. There were some times when I felt they were a little too densely spawned. I didn't really need the missile ones as often as I eventually just started to avoid the sharks/marine life.

Some ideas for future builds: - add reverb to the sfx to make them feel like they're in the same creepy underwater cavern - special powerups that increase the max amount of life you can get - points added or deducted for killing the sharks/creatures - rocks and other obstacles that would need to be obliterated with the missile - a weapon upgrade that allows you to shoot missiles in 3 different directions - a more realistic particle system for explosions

Overall great job with this game! Fit the theme perfectly :)

zlan100 2021-05-05 15:56

Cool game. The control of the submarine feels a bit funky to me and the sharks feel a bit too fast to me to dodge and that makes the missles aiming a bit hard for me. Maybe there can be a small adjustment on gradually speeding up so the player won't feel too accelerated when the game initially starts. But good concept, looking for further developing!

kotzi 2021-05-13 11:12

Nice game! I think it's a cool baseline to add more stuff (like power ups or more enemies). Congrats!

locustjin 2021-05-17 17:23

Thanks to everyone for your comments and evaluation. To be honest, I will answer the frustrating question "what's waiting at the bottom?". The game was designed in such a way as to compete on the principle of depth, who will swim deeper. In fact, reaching the end is not possible because the difficulty increases with depth and at the end it is almost impossible to get through.
