Can you offer a download link because I have literally spent the past 20 minutes waiting for the unity HTML page to load?

lereveur 2017-12-05 08:34

Awesome! I followed you because of your last LD, but this one is way far over! It was fun, I laughted a lot (I'm so bad at rythm games), and I will certainly retry it later ! Very good job, and I'm going right now testing your other game. :D

svntax 2017-12-06 09:02

Loved the humor in this one when making mistakes. The music is great too!

smbe19 2017-12-06 21:32

Awesome game! The music is great (as in all of your games) and the game hits the perfect spot of difficulty for me.

axoona 2017-12-06 23:08

Excellent game! Seriously every aspect is excellent :)

Loved the music and the graphics and the game idea, the little animations that really make it fun to play. The last level is a bit tricky with that syncopation, but it's also adding some cool challenge.

2017-12-08 04:21

Awesome!! Excellent graphics and music, and you 100% nailed the rhythm heaven vibe. I love the rhythm gameplay, though I found it a bit simple - having both the sightreading capability visually as well as the simon says-style audio cue made it fairly easy, so maybe just having one of those aspects might make it more challenging. (for example, rhythm heaven leans a lot on the simon says thing and has very few visual cues, or even misleading visual cues!) I got all perfects except on the last level - the first 3 levels felt fairly similar in difficulty, so some more progression there would be cool. Would've appreciated some gamepad support too, pressing spacebar felt a bit weird and made it a little hard to hit the fast rhythms for me. Still it was a ton of fun, excellent work! :D

rockhoppergames 2017-12-10 14:38

Two games instead of one? I didn't even realise that was possible! And both of them are some of the finest I've played this dare... That is seriously impressive!

Rhythm games are easy to mess up, but you've nailed it here! The effect when you miss a beat was a little disturbing, but that pressured me to work harder. I really had a blast playing this one!

ogma 2017-12-14 06:54

Oh man! One of my favorite entry of this edition, easily in my top 5#!

Be it the music / sounds / graphics / gameplay / humour / take on the theme / whatever, it really worked for me!

Apart making me realize I'm not fit to be a barber :p I really enjoyed playing your game, refreshing, funny, a good music to shake your head in rythm. The little dance of cleanly shaven guys is a nice and funny touch.

I didn't encounter any bug, all went smoothly. The music was well synced with the game. As I said earlier I loved the art.

Great, great job!

2017-12-16 09:17

Might be the best entry I've seen so far. Unbelievable you guys managed to do this AND another game entirely. I always get hyped when I hear that classic Kabuki 'yooo' intro haha.

2017-12-16 23:15

I had lot of fun! Thank you guys.

strega 2017-12-17 10:02

Awesome music and art! The blood effect is a nice touch. The audio/visual hints before your turn work really well, but for some reason I always miss read when I was suppose to start by a second or two, maybe a visual cue right before your line appears and starts to move down the body could help.

avavt 2017-12-17 16:53

Awesome game! Music and art are on point and felt great. The gameplay is a bit monotonous after some time, but I think with a bit of variety I can play it for hours.

2017-12-17 16:53

Wow this is a beautiful game! Don't have much to add, it really felt very complete, with art and sound working together perfectly.

local-minimum 2017-12-17 17:04

Great game! I really loved the execution, the take on the theme, the style and how well made it was. I only played your compo version so some things you might have fixed, but:

* On the title screen I didn't figure out at first that space was what would start/select and I never got what would have allowed me to see credits and such. * It would have been nice if there were more than one fail sound that the characters made. Especially to differentiate between getting cut/bleeding versus forgetting a piece of hair. A variety of success sounds (e.g. "Arigato") from the different characters would have been nice too. * It would have been nice to know how far you were in the progress of the level/song. Maybe there was some meter, but I didn't see it. Would help keep focus and go for perfect cut and such.

lukuluk 2017-12-17 18:30

That's a well refreshing game! I should have played thisone before Good Night Sheep ^^

I had just one difficulty to figure out the controls at the title screen, but the rest is all right!

lukuluk 2017-12-17 18:32

The sound, rythm and mood make me remember the Wario Ware games! Was it an inspiration?

2017-12-17 20:06

This is one of my favorite entry from this tram! Unlike the majority of the other games, it's not stressful to continue playing. The beat matching is solid. I love these types of games. I enjoy the simple graphics and complementary soundtrack, it's so good! I wish you all threw some more sound effects into the game when there was a mistake with cutting. That would have been amazing! How about a female version? =) I bet this is pretty fun on the mobile touch.

Congrats and a great entry!

Our entry is also Japanese-influenced. Play it and let us know what you think!

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-17 23:48

@lukluluk - Both Rhythm Heaven (Rhythm Tengoku) and the Wario Ware games were inspirations :) It was really fun to make!

cosmiccrystalgames 2017-12-18 04:03

Fantastic entry! A one-button game shouldn't be this fun! Awesome graphics, music and atmosphere. And just like IRL, there's nothing quite as satisfying as a perfect shave :D

baby-dino-herd 2017-12-18 05:00

Excellent polish, lots of fun, presentation really ties everything together. Not much else to say, other than that I'd have liked a little more connection with the theme.

jjjjason 2017-12-18 06:04

Oh my god Rhythm Heaven is one of my favorite series ever and you've pretty much nailed it. All of the songs are super dope, and the art style is pretty *and* endearing.

I came here from Goodnight Sheep (which is also super great) after seeing that you made two games, and couldn't believe that both would be this good. Amazing work!

regisrquoi 2017-12-18 15:24

This is so cool ! It's so funny ! I played it in my school and people in the amphitheater were yelling at me for cutting of the skin of the characters. It's a super cool game ! congrats ! Nice to see people making several game, I do that all the time in game jams ! =) =)

boorik 2017-12-18 16:38

Great rythm game, graphics and music are awesome!!!

This is fun, this is fast, this is sooooooo cool

andrew-white 2017-12-18 17:45

This game is really good. The graphics, music, and sound are amazing and funny. It definitly got harder as the levels increased. Overall, a really good rhythm game.

plasmonic 2017-12-18 19:30

Really brilliant! Love the idea, the artwork, the music, really great!

2017-12-18 19:32

fun and polish ! Really good entry

mosesg 2017-12-18 19:59

This was so much fun to play! The music, the art style, the rhythm style gameplay are all fantastic in their own right and perfectly work together. Everything's very polished and well implemented, while a lot of work also went into small details, like the way the music is implemented during the rhythm part. Amazing entry!

maybe 2017-12-18 20:48

Awesome game! Great work on the menus, the illustrations, the gameplay and especially the music! great music!!!

Despite having liked, I'm a really bad samurai shaver =P Captura de tela de 2017-12-18 18-49-22.png

chriiis88 2017-12-19 00:43

Holy cow this is fantastic, straight 5/5 in all categories. A very minimal negative point is that for some hair configurations you barely have time to react to the visual line that comes from the top. As someone without any feeling for rythm, showing this visual aid a bit longer before I have to cut would help (at least in the first level(s)).

veralos 2017-12-19 01:18

This is fantastic! The music and overall sound design is great (as it kind of needs to be for a rhythm game), the visual style is really cool, and the game is a lot of fun to play. Everything is super polished, with lots of nice animations to make everything feel smooth. The gameplay is obviously Rhythm Heaven inspired, but I also like how the concept is the sort of wacky thing those games would do (though probably with less blood and almost-nudity).

One minor issue I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be a way quickly restart. This is annoying if you're trying to perfect a level. I played the compo version for rating purposes, so this may have been fixed in the post-jam release.

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-19 01:42

@veralos - Thanks! As noted in the changelog, there is indeed a new pause screen in the post-jam release where you can exit the current level. :D

aeveis 2017-12-19 06:09

Had a lot of fun! Nice, simple, and polished. It can be pretty hard to do a rhythm game so props! I could see this in a collection of minigames like Rhythm Heaven - maybe if it was all samurai strangely themed games, or in general wacky scenarios. Keep up the good work!

fluidvolt 2017-12-20 00:26

Very nice! This is really fun. The music is great -- very genuine flavor and I really enjoy the little square wave flourishes that surf around over the traditional instruments. Visuals are simple in the best way... uncomplicated and full of character and humor. The rhythms become super fun as they become more off-beat. Challenginggg! One of my favorites I've played this Ludum Dare. Great job, you two!

2017-12-20 01:31

My first all 5s review. Nice works!

gistnoesis 2017-12-20 18:23

Nice art and audio. Quite repetitive. I didn't see the increase of difficulty between levels. The hard part is getting the first cut right. Far easier than DDR. Overall OK.

oddballdave 2017-12-20 20:54

Great art, great music, simple but fun gameplay. What's not to like. Great stuff.

chunkybrewster 2017-12-20 21:37

A wonderfully polished, funny, and enjoyable jam entry, I could see this being one of the games in WarioWare series!

finntastico 2017-12-21 00:51

This was really fun! The juciness of this game is so high that the simplistic game play is not an issue. I really loved the music and the drawings!

cerno-b 2017-12-21 11:09

I love rhythm games and this one is near perfection.

Everything fits together so well to create a coherent whole. The art style and to music match greatly. I admire how you fuse the classic Japanese composition with authentic samples to a retro chiptune sound. May I ask what tool you used to compose it?

The gameplay is super tight and the visual and auditive cues are flawless, from the the guys bobbing to the beat to the game actually showing you the rhythm in advance without taking the player off the action for too long.

The humor is also spot on. The basic premise alone is hilarious, but the execution with the gushing blood, surprised faces and the funny audio effect makes this a masterfully crafted experience.

The difficulty ramps up nicely as well. In the beginning still very well manageable, it turns to off beats and triplets in the final level.

The only complaint I may have is that the theme feels a bit shoehorned, but that's really nitpicking for a great game as this.

Definitely one of my favorites of LD40. Great job!

m-1 2017-12-21 12:26

Great one-button rhythm game with nice visuals and perfect music! Please make more games like this!

The first three levels felt too easy, but that's probably good.

Scores after first try: Level 1: 12/12 Level 2: 9/10 Level 3: 10/10 Level 4: 9/14

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-21 14:46

junber 2017-12-21 15:33

Really fun game. The music was awesome. Seeing a rhythm game in Ludum Dare is quite refreshing probably because pulling of making a good one takes time. And you even made another game, impressive!

cerno-b 2017-12-21 18:40

@ddrkirbyisq Thanks a lot for sharing that youtube video. It truly was a revelation. Man, watching you navigate through FLStudio so effortless really makes me want to get into learning to compose that way. How long have you been working with FLStudio?

I'm definitely keeping the video for reference later. My next goal was to get learn modtracking software, something I've wanted to do for ages.

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-21 19:30

@cerno-b: 13 years =) I'm notorious for having a quick workflow actually -- I developed my skills over years of doing "One Hour Compo".

cerno-b 2017-12-21 20:27

13 years. Man, that shows. You have awesome skills.

saphires 2017-12-22 18:26

This is awesome, great work!

youbestrong 2017-12-24 01:46

Two amazing games wow.

I'm really bad at rhythm games but I still like them especially for their music and sometimes for their visual styles like Rhythm-Heaven. And you guys have both of those down perfectly. I can't wait to see other games from your team! I'll go comment on Goodnight Sheep now!

naca 2017-12-25 04:00

Very good entry! It's a funny concept and well implemented, everything feels really polished. Soundtrack is simply amazing. Congratulations!!

Btw, our entry is also about body hair, but with a completely different approach ;) I bet you'd like to check it out!

bocodillo 2017-12-25 13:19

A really well polished quality game. The humour is on point and the game itself plays wonderfully (it's simple in that warioware way). The music is really cool too, seriously good job!

foodzilla 2017-12-26 00:49

I love this little game. It's hard as baaaaaa-ad hair. But the music is so catchy and the art is so good. How did you manage to throw this together so fast? O_o

profan 2017-12-26 02:47

Absolutely stunning, the music and art is quite remarkable and it's always fantastic to see rhythm games in LD (since they're so rare, at least to be done well!)

If theres anything I can complain about, its as others said that the very first slash is supposed to occur the very second the guide starts coming down for some shaves, but thats likely just a failing of my own bad sense of timing :)

Definitely one of my favourite games so far this LD round!

Great work! :D

gwinnell 2017-12-26 19:35

Great call and response rhythm game. Accenting the 'hits' in the music really makes it. Unusual/interesting theme too. If I have any gripe at all it's that I would have loved to see things get a bit more difficult!

goat-toaster-games 2017-12-27 09:31

This is incredibly well done and polished!! Gorgeous graphics and music, quite funny concept and works well with the theme. Very well done!!

sirpumpy 2017-12-27 10:44

Great game with a good soundtrack!

kromeboy 2017-12-27 13:55

great music and I also loved the artstyle

ardorugus 2017-12-28 12:48

Man, this is awesome. As the fan of beats and the Jap-Chinese culture, that raw tribalism that makes the game is just gasping. And the idea is so shave_me_down_me_pants cute. Very balanced collaboration of art and music!

hitchh1k3r 2017-12-28 15:50

Awesome music, and a funny game. I had a lot of fun playing through all of the levels. It perhaps could have used a bit more theme connection, but it was clear to see how the theme inspired it. I think my favorite part of this game is the unique twist on the rhythm game genre! Good work!

jjjjason 2017-12-28 21:51

Congratulations!!!

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-28 23:52

@jjjjason: Thanks! :D

I'm really bad at rhythm games, but I still like them, especially for their music, and sometimes for their visual styles like Rhythm-Heaven. And you guys do a great job with both.

2021-08-17 06:59

Everything fits together so well to create a coherent whole. The art style and music come together perfectly. I admire the way the classic Japanese composition blends with authentic samples and sounds chiptune in a retro way. The first three levels seemed too light, but that's probably a good thing. If I have any complaints at all, it's that I'd like to see things get a little harder and more gambling, but in the meantime I'll extinguish the lack of excitement at https://pokiesgo.co.nz/Betamo/ - a site with really proven and quality and most importantly honest games.
