LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Shovelware Knight by Jezzamon 2017-12-12T12:40:08Z

I had a good giggle! It's definitely got relevant subject matter and a nice interpretation of the theme. 5/5 Would pollute and oversaturate the market again! I think our jam entry currently perfectly fits the 'walking simulator' category of games you so hatefully elaborate upon in your description so I deserve extra points in shovelware-knighthood. Take notes people! Good job and keep 'em coming!

The burden by mathijs750 2017-12-05T20:30:43Z

Thanks, ciaccodavide, the game is not very optimized for webgl and there's definitely something in there slowing down the build but we have a good idea why that's happening and we're looking to fix that at some point.

The burden by mathijs750 2017-12-06T21:16:37Z

You are both absolutely right, we had gameplay ideas that didn't make it into the final version. The pickups were supposed to be put inside energy conduits to open up doors and other things like that. The negative effect of carrying pickups was supposed to be that they would also tug on and slow down the player, and there would be a dark force chasing you. In fact, in the current build you can 'drop' the pickups with the Spacebar, so the idea was that the player could 'lose' some pickups if he was slowing down too much. Due to development problems early in the jam we had to completely re-do all the technical stuff so that's kind of why things are so minimal right now.

We are working to fix the framedrops as we speak. We have a good idea what's causing them.

We are determined to finetune this project, redesign some of the gameplay and make the story of the game slightly more clear without taking away too much of the magic and mystery. I can't exactly say when that's going to be done however, but we will update.

Thanks Mr.MadCat! The white-out is simply the end.

@hiki911

Which build did you play? The windows version or the web build? The y-axis camera movement is opposite in these builds. The most recent build being the web build, since we changed it because there was negative reaction to the original y-axis setup.

The burden by mathijs750 2017-12-10T21:42:58Z

@hiki911 Have you tried just clicking the screen after the logo is shown? If that doesn't work, which browser are you using and are you having no problems running other web builds from other LD entries?

Thanks for your feedback and response!

The burden by mathijs750 2017-12-10T21:50:23Z

@Mashas Have you participated in any gamejams? I can't find games in your account. If there's anything you've worked on I'd love to take a look at it.

@Bartol44 Good point about the 'slowing down' mechanic, negative player feedback is usually a bad idea.

The burden by mathijs750 2017-12-10T21:53:11Z

@hiki911 Thanks for the confirmation! Going to check out your jam entry asap.

Robox! by ted 2017-12-10T22:44:13Z

Just gonna copy what I said on the public post; Love the handdrawn look! Reminds me of Machinarium a bit! That’s a good thing! I must admit that I’m glad I’m not an epileptic because the film effect is almost stroboscopic, I would recommend making the lightness of each frame a bit more similar so that it doesn’t flash as much.

Samurai Shaver by DDRKirbyISQ 2017-12-16T09:17:45Z

Might be the best entry I've seen so far. Unbelievable you guys managed to do this AND another game entirely. I always get hyped when I hear that classic Kabuki 'yooo' intro haha.

crowglary by blackoptics8 2017-12-12T00:33:08Z

Love the responsive grass and how nice the characters feel to walk around with. Great stuff!

Mayfly by silkworm_sweatshop 2017-12-11T14:01:01Z

Wow, sometimes I forget how much can be done with some basic text and effects. Definitely deserving of a high ranking. I do honestly hope nothing in this story has any basis in reality :P

One critique I have is that it kind of took a bit too long for my tastes for the story to 'take off'. But I understand there's also a kind of magic to that... and you don't want to destroy it by revealing things too early. Maybe some days just felt too tedious or something. I don't know.

BattleTennis DX Ultra Super by toestee 2017-12-12T14:32:43Z

Damn this is a pretty great Compo entry! I agree with the previous comments that some tutorial would have been helpful. But overall good job keep it up!

Sushi Factory Frenzy! by jasperarmstrong 2017-12-12T00:28:33Z

This cannot work with the theme... because it is NEVER A BAD THING to have A LOT OF SUSHI ;) Seriously got super hungry playing this. I liked how your graphics have a quite clear palette... with mostly grayscale colors with the greens and reds popping out very clearly. I also liked the almost flat-design like environment. Well done!

Unnatural Occurrences by Plasmonic 2017-12-12T00:15:41Z

Pretty impressive in terms of amount of content. I like the atmosphere as well. Feedback: It would have been nice to have a bit more of a tutorial or guide during the first playthrough because I really didn't know what to do at first.

Birden by Logan 2017-12-06T21:52:56Z

Nice compo game! I really got some Jazz Jackrabbit vibes from it somehow. I liked the idea of the mechanic with the multiple birds and how they tend to get distracted like cats causing havoc you don't want and how it makes you sort of think about how to control the birds. It's a shame you don't have any screenshots here on your LD page, it would definitely help people take the next step into actually downloading and playing the game I think. Great work for such a short amount of time!

Asteroid breaker by smiley 2017-12-10T22:29:29Z

Nice space mining game! Feedback: I think the controls are a bit too sluggish for my tastes. I don't mind acceleration buildup or indirect control over my character but this was just a bit too dragged out. I think if it was a bit more responsive then players would also feel more in control of their 'ball and chain' thing and more stimulated to try and really crush things with it. I would have loved to do that. The graphics are a tad minimal/simplistic too but they do work as a sort of homage to the classic Asteroid game and I do think it works for this kind of arcade / high score / stages type of game.

Yuri The Greedy Spaceman by PUARSLIBURF 2017-12-27T21:09:40Z

Nice compo entry! Keep it up!

StackUp by BinaryUnit 2017-12-13T15:16:02Z

Cool game! Loving the favela-type buildings in the environment!

PHOTOPSIA. by Simon Stalhandske 2017-12-12T00:37:52Z

Nice minimalistic style! Although I would recommend not trying to fuse it with traditional pixel art. But maybe that's just my personal opinion. Great job overall!

Grooblins! by ahintoflime 2017-12-10T23:38:39Z

Good job! The graphical style reminds me a lot of Hylics by Mason Lindroth (or anything Mason Lindroth for that matter). And I used to have a tamagotchi as a kid and got really sad when it broke.

Flips! by Beavl_Games 2017-12-12T12:04:19Z

Great job! I also love how polished this looks (my compliments to Horacio). The notepad-style font doesn't really do it much justice though, but I think picking a good font can be time consuming and I can understand if you decided not to invest much time in that department. The game itself is actually a lot of fun too and satisfying to play, you guys should definitely try to get this on the market!

Manystar by alexfalkenberg 2017-12-11T13:03:41Z

I think you did a great job. I've seen Asteroids-inspired entries for LD40 made with more people that had worse graphics and much worse controls. The controls of your game actually feel surprisingly fluid and responsive.

Compo is hard. Don't be to harsh on yourself for not finishing it in time. You learn, and then you are better prepared in the next jam! Keep up the good work!

Shifting Dreamscape by Cruise Elroy 2017-12-06T22:05:13Z

Looks great! Graphics remind me of Kirby on the NES. I like the creepy 'hand trees' too!

Drugrun by Fluffi 2017-12-12T16:28:05Z

Loving the artstyle and the sleazy garage metal. \m/ Much respect this game is f*cking amazing!

Sugarplum Summit by Michael Clavell 2017-12-13T16:47:38Z

Really well done! Great LD entry! I like how this game has a very unorthodox artstyle for this type of gameplay. With a little bit of extra attention you could easily release this commercially.

Run Guys by arron-fowler 2017-12-11T14:21:01Z

A simple interpretation of the theme that reminds me that I always overcomplicate everything. I liked how they all had names! Nice job!

Phool by ciaccodavide 2017-12-05T20:55:40Z

Looks and feels really nice, great job!

Mizu by sbarrio 2017-12-12T13:55:38Z

Interesting concept! Lots of possibilities with the mechanic. It's kind of like a 2D Super Mario Sunshine. Maybe it would be spectacular if you could spit some of your water like a supersoaker or something like that, to use as a weapon as well as a puzzle mechanic. Feedback: The first part of second level was really frustrating to me. The part where you have to collect the water where the enemy is walking, maybe I had the wrong idea that my glass had to be completely full to be able to press the switch, haven't tried it halfway-full. Maybe I just suck at this kind of game but I kept dying there and stopped playing. :( Overall great job keep up the good work!

Yarn the Kittens by Emilio Segura 2017-12-13T16:43:28Z

Great game! Good job! Cute style and sound! Very well-rounded jam entry!

Cloud Love by azdraws 2017-12-12T16:15:26Z

Nice idea, I loved the art and sound too. Great mood! Some advice: Upload some screenshots in the description and also provide a web build. Most LD-ers won't even bother installing games.

Some feedback: I didn't exactly know how to make the boat float more? Do I have to miss the boat with my rain so that it doesn't drown? I tried to avoid the boat but then it just sailed away at some point, no idea how to succeed.

Anyway I love the concept and atmosphere! Great job!

LD42 — Running out of space

Bobby's Warehouse by topatisen 2018-08-12T19:27:02Z

Looks great for a one-man effort! Reminds me of Overcooked a lot. Looks quite polished and well animated too. Well done!

LD44 — Your life is currency

Sheep It by anstabo 2019-05-15T09:35:59Z

I imagine you didn't make an entire rig in for example something like Maya or something like that. What's the workflow for this kind of animation? Are these entirely Unity ik's or something? Or is it purely blendshapes? How do you get the noodle arm/leg effect with this speed of development?

Sheep It by anstabo 2019-05-15T19:35:56Z

@anstabo Oh wow. Forgive me for assuming some 'magic trick'. Nice work!
