LD26 — Minimalism

Shoot Guys by larsendt 2013-04-29T04:21:00

I like being called a 'winner' when I have clearly been shot to death.

Truth Only by OrangeeZ 2013-04-30T10:17:00

I've never made an FPS before, but now I do.

Cool design and animations.

Nothing by mollymus 2013-04-30T09:42:00

Really great visual style, very hard game. Could be a little more forgiving at the outset? I learnt to love the freeze mechanic! Just chilli' in the sky, waiting for the buzz saws to pass underneath.

Voice of Fire by theGiallo 2013-04-30T10:38:00

I thought the jump was bit 'floaty', but that could have been a design choice. I love your idea of creating a series of games based on paintings. Kind of like William Carlos Williams' poems about Bruegel's paintings.

imy by Ditto 2013-04-30T09:26:00

Really great. You nailed the balloon mechanic. I love the sound they make when pop.

Also, I've just had a bit of fun editing the game in the map doc. Ad hoc level editor!

Misshapen by Aaants 2013-04-30T10:01:00

I think I was missing something with the combat? I could only kill squares who were slightly behind me.

Otherwise, fantastic art style and charming narration!

Balls! by pknowles 2013-04-29T04:02:00

OES_texture_float is missing :( Sounds interesting though.

Hiddensquares by Tozy 2013-04-29T07:46:00

I was hooked as soon as the .swf loaded. I couldn't figure out how to pass the third stage... but I had fun anyway. I wish I could program this pretty - I'll have to check out the source.

SQUARE by Beardbotnik 2013-04-30T09:35:00

I love the robot. Reminds me of PSX-era 3D (but done well). Kind of like 3D pixel art, I guess?

I agree with project_scientist - keep tweaking the physics. And keep making great 3D art.

Orbicular by metalcan 2013-04-30T11:21:00

Simple, and clean. Really great game. I like your choice to count down, rather than count up. It gives the player the curiosity to continue rather than just, y'know, 'high score'.

I Know Nothing by MathiO 2013-04-29T03:59:00

That was really great. You a vivid atmosphere with the music and giant pixels. I thought the potato gag somewhat cheapened the experience... but I still smirked.

Aaron and Alex by smilingrob 2013-04-30T10:23:00

Fantastic audio. Great voice acting and the piano was quite beautiful.

FOLD by jwaap 2013-05-04T00:58:00

Very beautiful day dream ambience. I found the controls a bit stiff, but adapted quickly enough. I want more non-combat flight games!

NinjaFlare by 8BitPimp 2013-04-29T02:39:00

Absolutely beautiful. Those leaves..! It's rare to come across a legit original pixel style.

I'd agree with Kortuga98 on the control issue though. Could have been amazing with smooth controls.

Also, it's great seeing a game under a megabyte - I've just started using Unity - so much bloat!

Bayou by paulmcgg 2013-05-03T13:31:00

A unique and really beautiful visual style. The audio was fantastic as well. Makes me excited to build worlds.

Tendril by Greg Power 2013-04-29T05:19:00

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

The slow transitions are intentional - I was aiming for a certain pace and feel. I can totally see how it would be annoying though (especially after many deaths) so I'll look into shaving off some milliseconds.

My biggest problem with this game (and other before it) is pacing difficulty. I can make tough levels, and I can make easy ones, but transitioning between them is tricky. With more experience and play-testing, I'll hopefully get better at it.

Bezier Challenge by Travis Irby 2013-05-03T13:40:00

One of the most original mechanics I've seen so far!

Pursuit of Happiness by paranoiks 2013-04-29T04:37:00

Nice set of mechanics, but when it finished I felt like I'd only played the tutorial. With all the great ideas toying with the concept of space, the player only ever has one choice at any given time - move forward. It would be be great to see some puzzles with some challenge.

Running With Swords by eteeski 2013-04-29T06:08:00

Nice work. The ninja's running feet animation is hynoptic... Slow-mo was great, slicing up a ninja star mid-air made me feel better about losing so much.

Are the levels procedurally generated? Too many walls!

Terrible Magical Artist by Colorvade 2013-04-29T08:16:00

If it needs explicit goals to be a game, leave it as a toy. It's brilliant as it is.

A candle was lit in memory of the fossilised beast, curled around a rock. Nearby a leaf settled by an upturned pumpkin.

100% Safe Download by 3.14 2013-04-29T04:28:00

100% Safe Download - ironic title?

Does look pretty good!

Gallery by Andrew Shouldice 2013-04-29T05:38:00

I really enjoyed this.

I didn't fully grasp what was happening (which is probably why I love it so), and I got stuck in the room in your big screenshot.

I'll give it another try later. Really want to see it to the end.

Great design, really gorgeous artwork (love the red lights... I felt like I was looking at evil). Great audio too - impactful but subtle.

Best experience so far out LD26! Do you have any other work I can check out?

BEAN by FenLudum 2013-04-30T01:15:00

Love the concept of 'Bean Time'.

Room by Magdev 2013-04-29T08:26:00

Really cool. Like a messed up Tamagotchi. Could be adapted into a mobile game (we need more quirky mobile games). Also, the music reminded me of Earthbound.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

I Contemplated the Sun of Limbo by Evilion 2014-04-28T13:53:00

Ridiculously beautiful. You creating an amazing world.

Deep Diver by Valandre 2014-05-01T04:18:00

This is amazing. So many great design decisions in there. Not being able to double-back up, treasure chests killing all onscreen enemies, invincible player, sharks that cut your air supply. I thought it would be kind of dull, but it's so well thought out - I had a lot of fun!

It Came from Beneath the Surface: Wormgun by BoneDaddy 2014-04-29T10:02:00

Played it with a controller, and loved it. I love how the more you get around in a level, the less dirt you have to work with, making it harder to get around. Awesome!

Forerunner by atomic_swerve 2014-04-28T10:16:00

Really cool mood, simple and effective controls. If a Super Nintendo JRPG had a flying section, this would have been it!

Temple of Ra by Split82 2014-04-28T13:34:00

Incredible polish for one weekend. Great atmosphere - it felt dank. Great work!

Substratum by Ian MacLarty 2014-04-28T09:33:00

Such a great game! Great mood, unsettling audio, and really smart rules. I love games that give me legitimate, mechanic-based surprises. An all round fantastic experience!

Bellhook by Colorvade 2014-04-28T03:55:00

I liked your art - you built a cool world with one image. The game reminded me of orisinal games, so that's awesome! Maybe too many evil fish? I was getting electrocuted and pounded left and right!

denudation by zillix 2014-05-01T04:23:00

This is a perfect little package. Cool core idea of absorbing/spending your power. I also liked how the boss was a level in itself. It was a little frustrating entering the first boss part and zonked with a bullet straight away, but otherwise, pretty much flawless.

Bubble Dream by denvil 2014-04-29T10:08:00

The level selection was awesome. I wish the whole game was in that 2D-Mario-Galaxy style.

Grimlock's Lair by Supernaught 2014-05-01T04:14:00

This is fantastic. I like the trade-offs of the long, quick sword, and the short, slow, powerful axe. Great character designs, and a super fun game all round!

Dowser (Lucy) by fluidvolt 2014-04-28T03:41:00

I found it pretty hard, I found the first TV, but after that... nothing! I liked the art though, and loved the sparse-but-interesting storytelling.

Emerita by st33d 2014-04-28T03:22:00

Really well thought out puzzle design! My 'R' key is getting a work out.

Terror from beneath by v_n_j 2014-04-29T10:35:00

Cool concept - it's like playing the human side in Mega Worm. Pretty hard to get the worms head, but I felt boss when I did. I think it would control really well with a gamepad or with a mouse - a was bit awkward just on the keyboard.

Can You Dig It? by otato 2014-04-28T10:22:00

Nice work! I was so close to clearing out all the gold! Those red slimes are devious when they team up...

CTS by Ping78 2014-04-29T10:25:00

Great effort to get this out in 10 hours! It was short, but I got lost, and kind of creeped out by the spiders - so it worked!

HYPERHYDROSIS by Craig Smye 2014-04-28T10:50:00

The dive was coool, especially followed by thuding into solid ground. I think I made it to the end... It just reset?

Ben is the Surf Ace by lessmilk 2014-04-28T10:55:00

It is very easy, but the combination of the music and art made me super relaxed and content. I had peaceful fun. I guess that's the point of surfing!

Beneath the Ice by crewderek 2014-04-28T10:08:00

Cool puzzle game, I agree with FileCorrupted, very Zelda-like! I felt getting a game over and having to restart was a bit harsh... but maybe I should have been better! Also, I loved the audio for the projectiles.

Under by zanenga 2014-04-29T09:57:00

Cool game. A like a good dash, and this one felt really nice. The hitboxes seemed a bit off though, and the slow death response made it all a bit unclear. I got over it though, and had a fun time.

Drillin by DMajor 2014-04-28T11:10:00

Great foreboding music, and I really *dig* that drills predator is a bigger drill. That first bottleneck is too small for me though.

Reflection by thebmxeur 2014-04-28T13:42:00

Tough to get the hang of, but I like that - it's rewarding. Cool concept and cool reflection effect.

Super You! by xWilQ 2014-04-28T10:41:00

This is a creative use of the theme! I also love the bully's B sweater. I want one!

Gray Surface by Geckoo1337 2014-04-28T03:28:00

The visuals create a great atmosphere. Claustrophobic and dystopian. I panicked a few times, which is a great effort using only cubes!

Blunderer by Jacob Peltola 2014-04-28T03:48:00

Got very lost, got very dizzy, and had a cool time! Really like the bright pulsing background. Also the avatar might be the best 2D-sprite-in-a-3D-game ever.

The Search For Sting's Desert Rose Beneath The Surface (feat. Bananas) by Quady14 2014-04-28T13:37:00

That is a beautiful desert rose.

BactoCo by Hempuli 2014-04-28T10:29:00

Really cool idea, imaginative use of the theme! I'd love to see this fleshed out into a bigger game with different abilities and AI, etc.

Revenge of the Kraken by malmazuke 2014-04-28T10:00:00

I loved the idea of controlling the tentacles Octodad style, even if they weren't the best weapon! Was a lot of fun once I got used to the controls.

Growing Weird Plants by aeveis 2014-04-28T13:28:00

Cool concept - reminds me of Flow a little.
