LD56 — Tiny Creatures

Dungeon Crawlers by Skyeward 2024-10-10T22:30:25Z

Very well put together, love the pokemon/rpg battle mechanics and the proceedural dungeon crawling was really cool touch. Visuals and sound totally on point. Running out of attack moves basically meant death since I couldn't run away, so once I ran out of attacks I was just stuck. This kept happening to me so I ultimately got frustrated and stopped playing - but would have kept going if not for this mechanic.

Colony Clash by stormburpee 2024-10-14T22:06:09Z

Looks very pretty. Gameplay was engaging, but my favorite part was the voice acting during attacks. Checked your stream out a bit but didn't see where you made the background, just the critters - if you made it I would have loved to watch that. I see some comments about the AI background and start screen, is that true? AI "art" makes me upset so I guess I'm just hopeful its not.

Burning Bells - Lilleborg 1259 by xand 2024-10-14T19:54:36Z

Really great game! The narrative beats were a great addition and kept things moving. Impressed with all the team has done here. Great job!

Fastigrades by Kyrio 2024-10-10T21:39:11Z

Fun and cute with a really well done presentation! I found the game to be hard even after many tries until I figured out right arrow and left arrow are not the same as A and D on the keyboard - and also learning that you can still move a bit once you land on the ground.

HATCH by jelch 2024-10-10T22:43:27Z

Fun video pinball game. Not sure why it needed an end tho, I could have kept going. Was kinda hoping something would hatch that I could hit with the ball and get a multiball going.

Antopia: Battle for the Nest by Anaconda Games 2024-10-14T21:49:58Z

Good presentation and I liked the variation of abilities. Was not sure what the T ability was really for but kept trying it. Ended up getting locked up where I couldn't cancel my throw and could not use another ability, so I got stuck. But I was able to capture a few ant hills.

Sammy's Playground by ThatSommeS 2024-10-10T22:18:51Z

Fun game. Incrementing through the level via the upgrade system definitely had me hooked in for a while and I lost track of time! So well done there! I thought the upgrades felt good and varied enough and pretty well balanced overall.

The Mims by Curtis Pelissier 2024-10-14T20:05:24Z

Fun little addicting game. I made the mistake of putting two of the brown fluffies in one pen thinking they'd be cool with eachother but that zapped my score. Still fun to unlock new critters and try to place them strategically. I thought the "God bless ye merry gentlemen" song cover was kind of misplaced, mostly bc I kept thinking about the Ronnie James Dio cover of it lol - vibe was there tho.

God Awakener by WegPast 2024-10-11T00:12:34Z

Interesting gameplay that reminds me of Reus. Trying to herd the elementals is hard when they keep turning back and not listening, getting hung up on pathing perhaps. I lost my patience with them after a while and came back to it after a break - then got frustrated with them again.

Antropolis by TheMiSta92 2024-10-08T22:46:31Z

Nice presentation, love the intro and the cute ants. I just kept building kitchens and couldn't get really past that point though maybe I didn't build enough the first few rounds?

Dino Island Safari by Skleembof 2024-10-08T19:31:08Z

Loved the voice overs "more dinos? thats impossible!" Definitely has that arcade feel. Runs nice and smooth. Keep up the good work!

Insect Racing League by mhorth 2024-10-10T23:57:36Z

This is great! I will definitely be playing more to see what kind of track times I can get. Really well put together, great sound, controls, UI, all of it. Impressed!

Comrats in Arms by pierogo 2024-10-10T21:48:36Z

Fun strategy game, was a bit confused about when I could attack but once I figured it out I was able to go for a good while. Eventually I hit a bug while trying to buy equipment, the menu never popped up but the game was paused so I could not continue. Great concept and fun game!

HAIRDIVERS by Surfa 2024-10-14T21:41:24Z

Big clap for having input mapping and having voice acting and transitions. The "democracy officer" guy had me laughing for sure. Thanks I needed a good laugh today!

Need For Snail:midnight by AegisFate 2024-10-08T19:44:07Z

Amazed that this was done in such a short time, just considering the number of assets and so many stages. That's so wild!

Fat Bear Fumble by wazce 2024-10-18T20:04:22Z

Cute music and interesting mechanics, particularly appreciated day/night cycle though it happens pretty fast. The movement mechanic took some getting used to, particularly managing speed to perform the different actions when hitting the trees. I ended up careening off the map into the blue a few times and just losing, but it was fun.

Rescue Meow-sion by Ninai 2024-10-24T23:06:23Z

Cute little game, I love how you can amass this wall of kitties so fast and the mechanics seem solid. Takes a while to get going on the upgrades but that is not really a problem, I wanted to keep playing. I couldn't speak to the sound because I was at a coffee shop and didn't have headphones. Keep up the good work!

Candy Quest by Lautaro Q 2024-10-10T23:35:29Z

Very well put together game with adorable art and great audio design. Writing is great too. I couldn't find the last bear, and I scoured the areas multiple times, so unfortunately was not able to continue. (spoiler: Found one in playground, behind house and in a crypt)

davids vs. GOLIATHS by Fernofai 2024-10-10T22:00:14Z

Impressive visuals and great presentation, gameplay was fun and engaging. Lots of potential here with the enemies attacks fixed for the later rounds. Zooming in and out was a nice touch. The audio attenuation wasn't bad for me (but I am using Studio Monitors with good dynamic response). Keep up the good work!

Welcome to the Jungle by ejunegao 2024-10-08T19:39:05Z

Was only able to eat the one big apple, the rest would not work

Kat Kicker by Agent__Maxwell 2024-10-14T20:11:15Z

I never want to kick a kitty. I tried to throw them as gently as possible. Just the name was kind of a turn off for me because I love animals, made me want to kick the client and destroy his stuff.

Nectarmancer by shamotte 2024-10-10T23:38:50Z

Could not start game, from main menu clicking start just makes the bee buzz sound and nothing happens. Tried here and on itch.io, thought maybe something else was going on but I kept trying and couldn't get past that.

Nectarmancer by shamotte 2024-10-11T00:22:48Z

@tesseract thanks, that got me in. Wasn't clear to me at all.

Tiny Creatures by Akarinn 2024-10-08T19:33:53Z

Fun and engaging tower defense game. A bit frantic at first, but I don't mind that. I like the variation of creatures and abilities from the merge mechanics too.

Frog Force: Jungle Invasion by ScrivenerOfLight 2024-10-10T23:17:28Z

Could only place frogs couldn't move or do anything, so I was completely lost and unable to "play". Unfortunate AI was used for art, the original screen I was like "what master pixel artist made this" and then when I saw it was AI I was let down.

Tiny Titans by Spear 2024-10-10T23:04:36Z

Really love the little alien models, very interesting looking and nice animations. The game itself was super hard solo so getting even one thing in the bin felt like an accomplishment. Overall visual style looked really good and the UI completeness was definitely great. Tackling multiplayer in a game jam I have a lot of respect for doing, but I didn't get a chance to try it out.

Not Alone by Leo Fu 2024-10-10T23:13:35Z

Interesting game, appropriate sound and good music for the game. Some of the scenarios were hard because you'd get stuck, when I reached the end cloud I could only jump up on the right side because of trying to push the rock through the spikes with the slime, and I couldn't jump as the ant so I was stuck there inches away from victory!

TinyWar by Iaroslavik 2024-10-14T22:19:28Z

Love the art and theme. The flea mechanic was tough because you'd get stuck with barely enough knights to give you enough flea time to take the dogs out, so took me a few tries. Took me a little while to figure out pickup the knights gave you fleas, I thought from description you'd throw the knight at them - but then it clicked.

MICROSLAYER by jellyfishhunter 2024-10-11T00:19:04Z

This game is great! Simple yet fun mechanics. I liked the 1-2 hit mechanic where you drop your weapon and then die if you get hit. Can see myself playing again later to get father - some of the green can be a bit distracting, even just a little dimmer in a few spots could help with that - but doesn't really take away from the fun at all. If anything this felt like a real classic arcade game to me. I'd put a quarter in this to play at my local arcade!

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-08T19:18:33Z

@mrspeaker The project is built on WebGL2 and Firefox was used for test. Are you trying to play it here or on itch.io, and what browser are you using?

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-08T20:09:43Z

@mrspeaker thanks so much for your review and persistence! I def would like to add some see-through effects for the squirrel and the nuts when they are nearby when I get the chance, and nuts that drop out of the tree as you climb the branches was planned.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-08T22:40:12Z

@skleembof thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely learning texture sizes matter, and shader streaming/loading too. I had to re-upload the itch version a few times to fix a loading issue, should be better as of today (5:30 CT on 10/8).

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-10T22:33:56Z

@nuin thanks for the feedback! Collision in the trees could definitely be improved, I only gave myself a few hours for all the collision stuff - ultimately a better tree collision mesh would improve this I think.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-10T22:36:11Z

@pious thanks for taking the time to review and give feedback. I agree, and I wish I had a little more time to add the menu to show he controls/tutorial bit up-front. Solo gamedev and sleep are always a tug of war! =)

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-10T23:44:15Z

@master-yeet thanks for the feedback - I agree the logic on the dog's animation triggers are off - setting the animations based on nav mesh agent desired velocity was probably an oversight. Dog can only attack once every so often, likely too long. I tried to use custom physics/collision here, and getting all the different raycast checks to work was difficult but they def can be improved.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-10T23:46:38Z

@adrelladev thanks for feedback - definitely hoping to fix some of the collision issues (particularly with the trees) which I presume might be the main bugs you experienced - if other bugs, def let me know if you get time!

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-11T01:12:29Z

@sabrina-ross be the squirrel!

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-11T01:16:37Z

@jaker Thanks for the feedback! Sounds like it is possible that the UI is still interactable or selected - thats a good call - I will check that out. I did intend to add a different button for routine to drop all the nuts in random time delays to look chaotic, but didn't get to it - great idea. The original thought was you might want to keep a nut for a certain special nut toss move (to distract the dog). But again another feature I didn't get to!

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-11T02:00:10Z

@mistercarson Thanks a bunch for you feedback! Definitely much to be improved with all the raycast checks for climbing and the tree colliders themselves (they are proceedural so I'm kind of surprised they work even as well as they do). Appreciate the kind words too.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-12T21:49:54Z

@tavevil Thanks for your feedback! Its definitely "squirrely" and can be vertigo-inducing when branches and other things are thrown into the camera foreground. I've been experimenting with simpler trees, camera improvements, etc.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-12T21:50:52Z

@djtequila thanks for your feedback! I'm definitely going to be improving the cameras and adding camera controls/preferences, this is a good callout.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-12T21:54:39Z

@adrelladev @jellyfishhunter thanks for your feedback, definitely going to be looking into the custom collisions I used - theres something in the jump routine that needs some work.

@joshua-reumann thanks, definitely something I want to improve in the future.

@mhorth thanks for your feedback. glad you enjoyed it, the jump charge-up UI and jump arc visualization was planned but I couldn't get it in, but really wanted to.

@cloudya thanks for the kind words!

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-14T19:39:13Z

@k6l2 AVP was one of my favorites too! definitely took some inspiration from that. The tree collisions definitely could use some work, right now they are procedural mesh collisions and move with wind which makes things weird with some of the very gnarled branches.

@malibaturhan thanks for your feedback! yeah I spent very little time on the dog and needs some work on behavior for sure. Camera fixes are also on the roadmap.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-14T21:25:17Z

@curtis-pelissier thanks for the feedback! My best ever is 24. 11 is pretty good! Tree collision needs some work for sure. I find its almost easier to jump up the trunk, then move to get the nuts horizontally.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-15T22:18:10Z

@mistagiggles Thanks. Its definitely easier with a gamepad, and there were some problems with the tree collision meshes. Have a lot of fixes prepped for release soon.

Gettin' Squirrely! by Cliff Coffee 2024-10-16T21:23:37Z

@crid626 Thanks for feedback! I am curious which version you played, this was an issue in early version I thought I had fixed the falling through the terrain issue.

@ale thanks for the feedback! Rain gutter initially "worked" but was super buggy so I had to turn climbing off for it (for now). Definitely will be improving this game and releasing!

Tiny Fate - Lost Ruins by sketchbookbug 2024-10-14T21:35:34Z

Interesting game, had a hard time with the controls. Most specifically the movement in the air - I would stop falling when moving left right to the point where I could stall almost indefinitely (perhaps gravity not added or overridden when there is input). The gravity ball is interesting in concept but kept pushing me in different directions than I expected, maybe custom formula being used instead of simple vector reflection? IDK. The cooldown for both abilities was so long that it made it a bit difficult to traverse past the first area.

Critter Capture by TheXRLorax 2024-10-14T19:43:42Z

Pretty quick little game, fun and well put together. I swear I got them all but I kept missing one. Keep up the good work!

I'm a Porter for the Worst Dungeon Party in the World by cpaz 2024-10-10T22:54:39Z

Good visuals and the voice over quips are funny. The gameplay gets a little getting used to because the knight just always tries to kill you - but that can be used at your advantage too. I felt the party was a bit weak, but overall I don't think thats a problem with the submission more just something to be balanced later. Well done!
