LD55 — Summoning

Readybuns by rosypenguin 2024-04-17T18:09:39Z

Hats off to you! Very impressive that you managed to do this on your phone without going mad. Respect!

Virtua Bob by MSolomon 2024-04-20T08:31:05Z

This was a blast to the past! I loved the game, the art style, the **full** narration, the smooth gameplay; it is really well done! And all of this by a single dev, that's incredibly impressive. Congratulations on a great entry!

Nexus by denvil 2024-04-18T21:56:33Z

Pretty amazing what you managed to do in 48 hours as a solo dev. The music sounds good, and the graphics look great and colorful!

I figured out the gameplay loop pretty quickly, but it was a losing battle for me as I did not get my hero back fast enough to stop bleeding money, so I was stuck in that regard. I completely understand that a lot of the UX that would make the gameplay a bit more understandable would take too much time for a solo dev in a compo, so it's great that you managed to publish this. Congratulations on that!

Real Estate MoGhoul by terryg 2024-04-16T19:54:33Z

Interesting take for a game, it's a refreshing concept I like! I didn't feel like there was a big difference between the different the cheaper and more expensive options of driving the house price down, therefore it seems like the Goth Teen option is always the best bang/buck option.

Not seeing how long the effect would stick around made it into a guessing game, because it seems like you cannot stack (different) options, so if the effect ran out, you were out of luck because the house price immediately jumps back to the original price. It would be nice if it would at least take a hit.

Overall I like the idea, congratulations on creating a very unique concept!

ManaFest by johnnysix 2024-04-20T08:00:43Z

Great graphics! The cat looks awesome, and it really has some character through the lovely animations. The gameplay idea is interesting. I got stuck on the (I think) fourth level. Spawning blocks is a bit tricky; it looks like you can always stack-spawn on the left-hand side of the totem, but not on the right-hand side?

Anyway, great entry, and very impressive for a solo dev. Great work!

Conjured by James Dunlap 2024-04-17T13:39:53Z

I like the premise of the game, and it seems like it could be a very fun game, but unfortunately it's unbalanced which causes some issues with the default settings. The main issue I have is that the enemy AI seems to mimic your own movements, which causes a lot of chases with no end because both running speeds are the same. Coupled with the attacks that the enemies spawn, it quickly devolves into an standoff-ish situation where no-one will win.

The items you can summon are fun though, and they look good. The little gnomes have funny sound effects (although they do get a bit annoying if there are a lot around), and the big gnome is a powerhouse. Downside is that the upgrade system also offers upgrades that you cannot cast until your mana pool becomes bigger, and if you do not know this, you are stuck with one unusable cast in the beginning.

Across the board a good effort, and I can see potential in it if it's balanced more.

Sumo-ning by wolderado 2024-04-20T10:51:09Z

What a great and interesting take on the theme! I really love it, it's simple but, like you say, the few minutes you're playing are fun minutes. Really love the (3D) art, the game feels really polished, and the amount of juice is great. If you'd say that this is a fully published game, I would've believed it as well.

Great job guys, really good entry.

Summoner Defence Forces by Gerolmed 2024-04-17T08:41:28Z

Great game, love the waves, and the graphics look good. My biggest tip for improvement would be to have the pathfinding be weighted near the center. Often my troops would run off into a corner and do a big circle sweep, while on the opposite side of the field enemies would be hammering the center.

Bail Out! by Historymaker118 2024-04-18T18:58:17Z

Nice little game, the art looks great and really conveys the atmosphere of a city in the oldskool games. Like you said yourself, the collision detection is a bit janky at times, especially in tight spaces, but that's definitely not a gamebreaking bug. But it has a good loop, and makes you want to play again to try to get a higher score. Great job!

The Magic Flute: Bee Proud of Me, Dad! by Carraka 2024-04-22T15:44:38Z

I absolutely loved this game! Your home-generated SFX were stunning, and really added to the atmosphere of the game. The background track was very funny, and didn't actually bother at all, so it was a great addition.

The art looked awesome, and fit right into the theme of music. The reactions of the dad on each new song were impressive, it must've took some time to figure out a system that could reliably generate appropriate responses without becoming a lot of manual labour to keep track of this.

Overall: awesome game, 5 stars across the board. Great job team!

Infinite Circuit Court by Rhoka 2024-04-19T13:53:27Z

Can't rate it, unfortunately, because once past the menu, the game doesn't respond to my cursor, so I cannot look around. Shame, because it looked like fun :(

Infinite Circuit Court by Rhoka 2024-04-21T08:42:21Z

@rhoka Thanks for the tip, but even setting it to 10 doesn't work, the cursor doesn't respond, unfortunately.

Summoning for Hungry Wizards by TheMoonrise 2024-04-19T14:08:52Z

Awesome game, loved the premise and graphics! The dancing animation on the beat of the music is a great example of attention to detail!

I managed to individually summon all ingredients, and could combine those individual markings up until like 4, and then when I started adding more it always became a lemon. So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong there...

Dungeon Evoker by VPhyre 2024-04-17T08:57:49Z

Nice spin bringing in a rhythm game! I finished it on hard, and it felt right on point regarding the difficulty. The graphics were nice, and I really liked the mechanic of having to hit the boss in between sessions. I was initially a bit confused because for me orange on the boss looked a bit more like yellow, but it seems like the bosses never turn yellow? Other than that, great effort!

Athention, Please! by fnelix 2024-04-19T09:09:25Z

I really liked the game! It was simple yet challenging. The graphics were great, and the music was a nice touch to really set the atmosphere in combination with the graphics.

After stage 4 or so the game does start to get a bit too long-winded, as it doesn't get more complex, only longer. It would've been great if each odd stage would introduce another slot for the constraints. Also, on my first attempt my developer brain saw '!pants' as 'no pants'. Fool on me for not properly checking the intro screen :P

Summonion by KeithSwanger 2024-04-18T17:31:13Z

Cute game! The graphics are great, and love the homemade sound effecs (could shake hands on that one :P). The gameplay loop is nice and simple, though I would've preferred it if the planting button would be a toggle.

It was surprising to see you've incorporated a bullet hell into this, which is a great touch. During the third game I had the feeling some attacks were maybe a bit unfair, but that could've been because I was constantly trying to simultaneously summon onions, keep them in place, and move between the bullets at the same time. I never focussed one thing at the same time, which maybe could've made things a bit easier.

Overall great job!

Purrfect Portal by Teto 2024-04-17T12:01:29Z

I can tell that you guys put a _lot_ of effort into this game. It's impressive how much art and gameplay there is in here, because building a factory game for a jam is definitely a tall order. After some fiddling around I figured out the core loop, and I enjoyed playing this game! The storyline was definitely somewhat disturbing, which definitely adds to the humor of the game.

At some point I began to lose track of what each building/resource did ("What was the demon doing again?"), but other than that it was great.

Congratulations on being able to push out so much content in such a short amount of time, well done!

A cake from beyond by Nuanda79 2024-04-17T09:35:46Z

Really liked it! I'm normally not someone who plays point-and-click games, but this one was great. The quests were fun to figure out, and it worked well. Very nice graphics as well, and the story was well thought out and funny!

A personal preference for me would be if the text would appear faster. For me it was a bit too slow, especially on the longer lines.

But great effort people, loved it!

Summoner's Emporium by imwonderr 2024-04-16T18:52:36Z

Lovely little game with a great art-style. I was a bit confused after the tutorial, but a bit of tinkering around made me realize what was needed. The chain of summoning -> generating resources -> creating potions -> selling potions is a nice idea, and makes me think a bit of a factory game, so it has potential!

There was a bit of frustration with the UI, however. Adding the ability to cancel out any of the UI menu's would've been great, as it makes checking your slimes/potions stats without having to change them impossible. I also softlocked myself on my first try when I clicked the summon portal again after having spent all my money while no money was being generated. I could no longer back out of that menu and had to restart the game.

Overall great effort, and good game!

The Ordnancer by ForceElementZ 2024-04-19T13:44:41Z

Great game that really kept me going! Loved the graphics, the background music was sick, and the chiptune SFX fit the game perfectly.

The base sword is very OP once you understand that its range is higher than that of the enemies. So I could just rush-trigger all pillars, kite all enemies, and smash them to pieces from a safe distance, and then place all crystals to advance to the next level (for the portals, did you use the sound from Portal, btw? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:). So the game is pretty easy, but the fight mechanics are very satisfying, so good entry guys!

Muddy Wars by betovf 2024-04-19T12:30:59Z

It took a little bit to figure out the controls in combination with the firing, but once you get a bit better at drifting while shooting, the game becomes a good challenge. I beat it, and I loved the later levels!

The graphics are awesome, nice 3D pixelart! The sound is simple, but effective, and I definitely like the airstrike attack; very satisfying. Great game, and even more impressive coming from a solo dev!

Demonic Panic by Guilloteam 2024-04-18T18:23:20Z

Great concept, and even greater execution. The art is great, the music is very nice, and it plays really smoothly. The difficulty ramps up nicely, so it has a great "let's try that again"-feeling. Great job guys!

Demanager by satacat 2024-04-20T10:41:01Z

Nice concept, and I loved the art of the game. The attention to detail is good, and the UI being integrated into the game itself is a great touch, especially the clock with its eyes following you around :P

Like others have said I also had some false negatives where I had a full match on all ingredients (with no ingredients left as well), but it still didn't allow me to summon, and I had to select another recipe that only had 2 of the 3 ingredients. I don't think this is intended when talking about the 'intentional mistakes' right?

Good entry, and great job to the team! It's clear to see that it's a team effort, and it integrates flawlessly.

ClickerMant by DeltaMain 2024-04-20T12:17:17Z

Good game, really liked it, and kept replaying it until I beat it. Seems well balanced enough that after a few tries you know what you need to do, and when I beat it, I had enough demons left to go for a few additional rounds if there would be any.

The art looked great! It's a funny style, and the animations of the skeletons really added to it. Overall great entry, and good job on you guys!

Braid 3 by magicdweedoo 2024-04-20T08:21:49Z

Well, that was certainly something! I beat the game, but don't ask me why... I haven't watched Prison Break, so all of the references went over my head. But I did play Braid, and you did a good job on the first level trying to parody off of it.

The controls are a bit wonky, I often fell to my death even though the jump should've still triggered on time. And the one-hit-death system gets tiresome pretty quick, so I would suggest to add a health system.

All that aside, this is definitely one of the stranger games in this jam, but it's cool to see how a solo dev managed to switch between multiple game mechanics in each level.

The Unsummoning by Abstruse 2024-04-16T17:47:13Z

I always love me a good typing game! The art is great, and the difficulty ramps up nicely. The words getting covered during the more hectic parts is maybe something that needs tweaking, but it also adds to the difficulty, so maybe it's fine. I did notice that you run out of the dictionary pretty quick and words start repeating a lot, so I would've loved to see a much bigger dictionary.

Overall great take on the theme!

Drawn to Summon by Tommy Moua 2024-04-17T10:19:00Z

Nice little game. The time constraint in combination with a mouse makes it stressful, but satisfying once you get the unicorn, so it's a nice tradeoff.

I also thought of the same concept as @mythrilminestein, where it would be awesome if the shape you drew would be translated into a 3D image, because boy those would be some abominations on my end!

Burn with me by Nozomu57 2024-04-16T19:36:57Z

A deck builder? We know how you feel... Anyway, awesome execution! I really loved trying to figure out the tactic trying to get to satan; unfortunately lost to him, but loved the process nonetheless! Great work on your own, and even actually managing to create a balanced deck, which is incredibly hard in the short amount of time you have for a jam.

Small bug I found: the level tracker in the center doesn't seem to always update at the end of a round, resulting in m e reaching satan with a few missing crosses.

Great game, love it, awesome execution!

MEOWTERSPACE by Tetracold 2024-04-17T10:10:50Z

Absolutely wonderful art! Making the lines non-consistent in the flipbook was a great choice, because it both makes the game come alive as well as gives it that oldskool look.

The gameplay itself was fun to tinker with. It took me a little bit to figure out what the actual UX was, but once I got it, it became obvious. The only thing that was unclear to me was when I could spawn a new UFO. It seems constrained on time?

Even though the game is supposed to be endless, I think I finished it, or hit a bug :P Once I hit 211 points and 120 bells, it stopped spawning new stuff.

gamejam-nomoreenemies.png

Edit: Also, kudos for the name! I laughed out loud when I saw it, and knew I had to play it.

Sir Lancelittle by BaggerSmurf 2024-04-16T14:57:59Z

@gleb-yakovlev I spent so much time trying to work out that 'attack during deck building' bug, but no solution we came up with actually fixed it. We share your frustration! Thanks for the feedback!

Peso by Tuna545 2024-04-16T20:02:01Z

The art looks great, and it makes a good puzzle game due to the scribbly nature. I turned up the volume to hear the music, and then the game scared the life out of me when I put in the final piece and heard the dog barking :joy:

Demon Incremental by Narbam 2024-04-19T09:31:43Z

Nice little game, and I can see the potential in it if further expanded upon.

I'm not sure if it's me, but I have the idea that it's impossible to prevent the timer from running out? Even when spamming attacks, regardless of the demon size, you will never do enough damage to prevent the timer from reaching zero and having to click 'retry'.

Regardless, good effort on this!

Squiggle Sorcery by LoongYi 2024-04-19T13:30:43Z

I like the art of the game, and it looks like it could be expanded into a good game. But the combat was a bit confusing, I just selected the rightmost five cards, and was able to beat all enemies with it, and then it stopped spawning new ones. So I think there is a little diamond in the rough here, especially on the UX part.

But the gameplay aspect looks like it took quite some time to develop, so good job on that, and I know how painful UI development under time constraints can be...

Dragon's Hoard by Tryx 2024-04-17T11:13:01Z

Fun little concept! I like the idea of a platformer where you actually have to create part of the platforms yourself when playing, I don't think I've seen this before. The amount of gameplay is actually impressive for a solo dev, so congratulations on the amount of progress.

As a gameplay improvement, I think it would be great if the mana regen would be a bit faster. A few times I was stuck halfway through on my own platforms as I was waiting for more mana. Maybe an interesting mechanic would be to not only have a conversion of mana to health, but a 'sacrificing' mechanic the other way around (so health into mana)? I noticed that killing enemies gives a big mana boost, so after some time whenever I got stuck I tried getting more mana faster by killing enemies from a distance with the staff.

Some general tips: * Put a few screenshots and gifs on your game page. The art will attract people if they see it before having to download the executable. * When executing the game, I got a Godot error indicating that I did not have Vulcan drivers installed. I had to create a shortcut, and give that shortcut the `--rendering-driver opengl3` parameter in order to run the game. I do not have any hands-on experience with Godot, but I'm sure you can change something in the build settings to also support OpenGL when building.

Slaymore by Joshua Miller-Pio 2024-04-23T20:46:01Z

Getting major Gameboy vibes from this color palette! The graphics are amazing, really good job on those. I really love the parallax effect you created, it adds a lot of atmosphere. The sounds were good, but adding more variations of the same sound is key when it comes to not breaking immersion.

The gameplay is interesting, the action combined with the summoning in a great gameplay mechanic in theory. In this game it doesn't really shine, because summons don't always attack or are in the way, resulting in you having to do a lot of the cleanup regardless. Furthermore, dialing down the ice-skating feeling of the controls will probably go a long way with all the comments about not feeling in control of the character.

Very impressive entry, and I can see a lot of potential in this game. I would love to see a full game on this. Congratulations on you all!

Into the Oven by limerish 2024-04-22T09:00:11Z

Interesting combination of pizza (toppings) with a wave system. I liked the idea of being able to create your own weapons by combining toppings of your choice.

After spawning with the pizzas it was a bit unclear which of the three buttons would correspond with the pizzas I created earlier, and I also forgot which combinations I made (my fault of course, but a little UI entry on that would've helped greatly!). So it ended up with me just spamming the strongest pizza I found. Because of this, the game didn't really pose a challenge, as others have mentioned as well.

The graphics were nice, though, and the effects looked funky, I liked the explosions! The audio was great, even though not created by yourself, but it added a nice touch.

Overall nice entry, and good job on it.

Guitar of the Undead by Expiredcode 2024-04-17T10:53:25Z

Like the idea, and the result is great for a solo dev. Getting the timing down was really tough, though. I was constantly trying to figure out when to hit the note, sometimes it would be on-point when the note hit the character's head, other times it already disappeared before hitting the head. Now in the comment I see that you're supposed to hold down the note :P
