LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Magmania by CameronPenner 2020-10-13T20:26:21Z

Wow, that is amazing! Really scratched the same itch as (sometimes) Subnautica and Overcooked, just scrambling to finish all the tasks, gather resources, start a project, finish another somewhere else and so on. Audio could have used a bit more polish or variation, maybe a melody underneath the loop or gradually morer instruments. Also: Was it possibly inspired by Blizzeta's theme from Twilight Princess? Sounds a bit like it :)

Knights of the Holy Loop by RenD 2020-10-06T17:45:37Z

No game uploaded here, might wanna check on that!

Stuck in a Loop (station) by erikiene 2020-10-06T18:04:19Z

Wow so the graphics are very good and so is the sound, incredible presentation overall. I also liked the idea and the first two rooms were put together very well, the flashing light challenge was quite fun to overcome. Then, however, the third room came and I could not progress past that point. I spent a solid 10 minutes figuring out what exactly I was supposed to do about the notes that were not told to me (4, 15 for example), those that were given twice in different colours (9) and those way past the number of notes (23, 26 etc). Even though it was very fun o play and fit the theme quite well, I had to give up at that point, sadly without reaching the probably very satisfying ending. 4.0 Overall and personal winner in Graphics (4.0), Mood (4.5) and Sound (4.0) so far but beyond my puzzle solving skills, sadly.

Food Chain by Random Wizard 2020-10-13T20:11:40Z

Nice game, as others have already said, the graphics are very nice, especially for a compo game! The gameplay itself only fits the theme in a very limited way but is good at what it does. The game is not very complex or impressive but everything works as it should and it is one coherent product. You could maybe add a small prompt about controls as well, that can ususally be done quite quickly and improves the experience for your players considerably.

Conciousness by Edwarkun 2020-10-06T19:28:26Z

Absolutely amazing. Nothing to criticise. The humor was absolutely on point, the solutions to every puzzle were creative and the dialogue was funny. The flavour texts really added to the experience and our team was inspired to make something similar in the future. I am very impressed that you came up with all this in just 72 hours. The only points I might have are that some things were a bit confusing (Having to light the last candle when the pentagram was already complete, the door above the stairs after getting the dreamcatcher) and that the audio was nothing special but when the only criticism is that an aspect was not outstanding, that does say a lot. 5.0, highlight.

Hell Glider by TheAxe316 2020-10-06T19:02:09Z

That is definitely a very fun game, super polished for a jam game and it looks nice on top of that! I was very impressed by its length as well, I expected it to end about 3 levels earlier than it did but you did an amazing job designing all the levels. It also reminded me a bit of our game because of the whole swinging thing, except that yours felt way smoother to control and was less frustrating imo :P One of my top games so far, maybe you could have communicated how to control the rotating switches a bit better (I kept trying to use WASD) but that is about the only criticism I can give!

Crazy Scientist: Lost in Dimensions by WormholeGames 2020-10-06T18:41:23Z

That is a really good game, wow. I loved the controls, super snappy and every mistake felt like it was 100% my fault. The levels were very well designed and the way they progressed over time felt natural and it was fun to see what challenges you came up with next. The theme, style and setting all fit together really well, tool, and the whole thing felt like a very coherent experience overall. I loved the low pixel style and I think it looks great! Definitely one of my highlights so far.

Stuck In a frootloop by AgentLlama22 2020-10-06T17:44:26Z

That is quite good for a second jam, I found the extremely floaty physics quite hard to get used to at first but they worked out decently later as they gave more leniency to my jumps. I would recommend adding a simple background music loop (for creation, Bosca Ceoil is very easy to use) and maybe spicing up the graphics with some free assets to give the game a bit more personality. There are other areas that need work such as the collision with walls giving you another jump, the beak of the toucan getting stuck on objects and so on but I think just participating in more jams and perhaps watching a few tutorials to speed up basic mechanics will help out a great deal. If you go to my itch.io page for example, you will see my first and second game jam games (This is my second) and you may notice the deifference as I learnt to limit my scope, draw a bit and how to make basic systems (Camera, Player controller, physics, menus) quite quickly.

Missile Loop by Ripple Studios 2020-10-05T19:32:40Z

Download links do not work, "we couldn't find your page"

Missile Loop by Ripple Studios 2020-10-06T18:13:32Z

Is it correct that I am only able to see just above and below my missile? That made it incredibly hard to see some shurikens coming so the whole game was about memorising the layout of when each shuriken is where, which is a fine idea, just very frustrating without anything added to it. Except that the levels are all the same, I also do not see the loop aspect realised in this game. It is an old but good concept, though, that is well executed from a technical standpoint: The controls are snappy, the music is present but not distracting and the graphics are all coherent. There is not much to dislike about it: A simple game that provides what it needs to.

S.H.I.P.S. by PhindieGames 2020-10-06T19:13:40Z

Very fun game idea but I am disappointed that it is controller exclusive. I could fortunately play it (Even though my Button layout was different which was confusing) but my friend was just unable to play it at all. Secondly, the fact that you lose cannons is not very good game design, it should not get that much easier once you only have one cannon left, I would suggest a shared health bar of 5 for example so that the core mechanic is kept even when you take damage. Apart from those criticisms, though, I liked the art style and the music, as well as the general idea, the coordination aspect with differently oriented cannons was quite fun. Better in theory than in practice but still a 3.5 overall.

LD49 — Unstable

Battling Viruses by Noirox 2021-10-06T17:01:51Z

@ghost-wave Yep, we definitely overscoped this time, especially after a rather long break from programming. Turns out AI is hard and making watching blobs fight fun is even harder lol. Glad you enjoyed it a bit nonetheless! And regarding the mutations: We debated that option but that ultimately felt too plannable and not unstable enough.

Weak Signal by Papercypress 2021-10-19T15:35:09Z

Amazing! One of the few Jam games I replayed a few times to increase my highscore :P One criticism: It is sometimes quite hard to tell how the drone will move after dropping in the parcel, maybe an indicator in form of an arrow?

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

It's Not Me It's You by John Livingston 2022-04-12T12:08:02Z

A delightfully different and goofy entry that really made me rethink my approach to menu design :P This unironically has potential as a full release meme game similar to Untitled Goose Game or various simulators. Stellar job on achieving all this in the limited time frame as well!

Loyal Prisoner by RalfZ 2022-04-06T09:26:39Z

Honestly, I have a bit of a soft spot for games like this :P I like seeing numbers go up and I like seeing them go up efficiently even more. I was impressed by graphics and very clean execution of this, no bugs, nothing unintuitive, nothing clunky, you stuck to the relatively small scope and executed it well imo. What hurts this game is that while there is stuff to do, there is very little progression, completely alright for a game jam game to be short and sweet though. Only real criticism I have is that the atmosphere felt too bright for prison, especially the catchy music tune. I could definitely see this as a more fleshed out game, though, especially when you are like me and play Cookie Clicker to relax!

Tree by killswitch 2022-04-05T12:29:30Z

Just a heads up - I can't play your game because an error occurs: "The code execution cannot proceed because d3dx9_37.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem." Please notify me when you fix this, I would love to try your game!

12 Hours by GeraldFIngBurke 2022-04-05T12:49:05Z

A very direct interpretation of the theme, which is always good to have. The graphics do look quite nice and sold the theme of a lonely, dutiful experience effectively. I felt like the atmosphere of being isolated and seeing the world rebuilding could have been executed better, though, perhaps through a window?

The core gameplay worked well, was intuitive and fit your story but I think it could have been a slight bit more interactive, perhaps by making the player press a physical button on their keyboard instead of just walking into a certain area. This could also have been a way to add some challenge to the game as it currently live off only its theme and the story behind it. A decent small game that made heavy use of the theme, though, good job!

Beyond The Veil by Hare Software 2022-04-05T12:17:17Z

I was very impressed by story and graphics at first but I have to admit that the gameplay quickly got stale. I tried for about 20 minutes to get past the first encounter, failing every time due to my character having incredibly low HP and getting one shot while slowly whittling away at the opponent. I think the game could have profited greatly from an introductory battle that teaches the mechanics as well as some more balancing work. I suspect there was more of the interesting and quite well written story after the first battles but due to the RNG-heavy and difficult nature of the combat system, I didn't have the opportunity to discover those. My respect for the outer appearance though, this could be a full game well worth spending a few bucks on.

Vine Dash by Taximan981 2022-04-10T09:59:00Z

I think a lot of people had the idea of an endless runner but in my opinion, you pulled off one of the best! The relatively straightforward camera and time manipulation were great to add some flow and fun to the game. In my opinion, adjusting the camera angle slightly and maybe not having the vines behind you in permanent view (see, for example, Subway Surfers, where the inspector disappears behind you after a while and only catches back up when you make a mistake) could add a bit to the readability of the game. Otherwise great job and a special compliment for the animation, looks very nice for a jam game!

Joke is on you by Pawciu 2022-04-05T12:36:41Z

Well that was an... interesting game :P Graphics are surprisingly nice, especially the smooth walking and slapping animation surprised me, good job to your graphics person. Nothing to say about the gameplay as this is a meme game, got a chuckle out of me. I honestly think this could be an interesting concept, a dialogue game where the outcome is inevitable but that obviously needs a lot of writing.

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-11T14:03:28Z

I love management games and I am very glad to see quite a few pop up this LD because they do seem to fit the theme quite well! I think what you have created here is very nice for the usual jam constraints and I could definitely see this evolving into a long-term project because it is so expandable! Most of the criticisms I would have have been brought up by others or yourself already so all I have left to sday is: Great job!

Mutating Escapist by Noirox 2022-04-05T13:14:01Z

@aymeric-le-moal Thank you for the feedback, writing sarcastic robots turned out to be super fun! You are definitely right about animations and we have that planned for the next time but could you elaborate on the UI part? Do you mean a different palette, feedback when clicking buttons or a different font?

Morpheus of Mars by AnneArkey 2022-04-10T09:52:03Z

Delightful and very different experience as others have said! One piece of feedback I have not yet seen from other commenters is that I felt the info-window was a bit underused. I found some functionalities and loops slightly unintuitive and I think displaying information about the selected object at the bottom-center/top-right while leaving the text box open for some hints/humour could be an easy way to make the game a bit more accessible, appealing and interactive. Amazing job though, and definitely a memorable game in this jam. RTS is a hard genre and we royally failed creating one for the last LD... impressive!

LD51 — Every 10 seconds

The Ten Second Games by Chao 2022-10-19T11:01:23Z

This is such a good take! I loved the idea, which actually made me laugh out loud, and the art, humour and mood only added to that. Sadly, the actual gameplay is not very fun, I would describe this less as a game and more a visual novel, which is not designed to be played, but to be experienced. Highly recommended this to other participants in the Game Jam, while not the best *game*, certainly one of the best *entries* I have seen so far this year.

Chef Jeff wants you! by jkniest 2022-10-20T22:27:52Z

Wait, did you really just make a single-player Overcooked clone and slapped on a 10-second restriction? I mean - nice concept and really really polished execution but... well, it's not yours :P

Don't Get Possessed by epb9000 2022-10-19T10:43:00Z

Very nice, I love bullet hell games! As others mentioned, due to the disappearing directional marker, it really felt like rushing madly towards an exit, while only having a rough idea of its location. I feel like the 10-second timer could have had more impact. While it was indeed relevant to the gameplay, its impact could have been made more apparent, wither through visual effects or a clearer difference between the phases. By my third run, I still only had an approximation of how exactly the two phases differed. Overall, I had some very fun runs and I like the art direction and cohesiveness of the submission. Good work!

Patched by Ty Victorson 2022-10-15T22:11:06Z

Nice game, I think the core gameplay loop feels really smooth, killing enemies, finding my way and defeating the boss was really fun! I think where the game fell flat for me is in the theme department, where I think even with a functioning mechanic, there are more interesting ways to look at it than random changes every 10 seconds. Props though, this seems like a bunch of work and a good prototype that could be developed further, just as a Game Jam game should be!

Poda Wants a Statue by Doot 2022-10-20T23:12:18Z

I cannot contribute anything asfter al lthis amazing feedback, I just want to join the choir saying this is an absolutely amazing game and my uncontested favourite from this Jam!

House Of Desire by Noirox 2022-10-03T22:44:52Z

@thiefaine I'm glad you enjoyed it nonetheless, thanks for checking out the game! The build link should be a direct Ludum Dare upload, the servers might be a bit under stress...? I will check back later, good to know.

Take your sh*t,please by commanderzzx 2022-10-19T11:13:13Z

A very well polished entry! I think your art direction and timing are very polished and I liked how seamlessly the tutorial was implemented. The gameplay, however, was quite boring and I felt like the theme could have been implemented in a more pressing manner. I never felt the 10-second restriction and sometimes even forgot that the game had a timer at all, as I had to focus more on getting the stickers right. A well-made game, that maybe could have used some more time in the planning and innovation phase, as with this amount of polish, I am sure that you could have made something even more impressive!

Secret ingredient by Guzman 2022-10-20T22:34:39Z

As @doot already pointed out - I am a bit confused right now as I did not seem to find anything in this maze. I tried using the rightmost walls method to get deeper into it and found some custom rooms: A larger ballroom of some sort and a smaller food storage but neither was interactable as far as I could tell.

Graphics and movement do feel very nice though, good job on that, and I think you could make this into an even better prototype once you start implementing more features and a gameplay loop.

TicTacCat by Kerioth 2022-10-20T22:49:23Z

There is little to say that others have not already mentioned, but I will reiterate nonetheless: Holy cow, this is a well-polished game for a Jam! Graphics, Sound and gameplay quality are all way above the usual standard I would set. The only caveat is obviously a missing tutorial. I also noticed that some lockout (especially during the cat's swipes) could have helped, along with a more core and impactful implementation of the Jam's theme.

Picking apples by SΓria Games 2022-10-20T22:44:46Z

Hey, I liked your entry! I feel like you had a clear vision for the game and I think you can be very proud of how it turned out. Obviously there is still some stuff missing and lacking but fro mwhat I can tell, I think giving you only a few things to explore will help ypu out the most. Firstly, I would advise you to work on mechanics first and then on graphics. The game's graphics are already up to the standard set for a game jam and investing too much time there will keep you from developing the core mechanics.

Secondly, I think easier camera controls, especially including a vertical axis, which would also help with the jump feeling better, could already make a big difference, along with maybe slightly more deliberate implementation of the theme.

Overall: Good work and I hope to see more from you next Ludum Dare!

Enemies always make big speeches by Thiefaine 2022-10-03T23:35:26Z

Very fun game, I enjoyed it a bunch! As to something to improve: I feel like the theme could have been implemented better, nothing happened *Every* 10 seconds and the seconds could just as well have been currency, experience and so on.

LD54 — Limited Space

Sneak 100 by Noirox 2023-10-03T00:01:14Z

@medow Thank you so much for the kind words! I just patched the game to display the correct code in the message, it would be a shame if that causes issues for more people. As a hint, if you want to see our beautiful end-screen in-game: A green light has lit up somehwere south of the number pad. Thanks again for playing and giving us feedback, catching that was really valuable!

Winds Of Pilgrimage by Medow 2023-10-03T00:49:40Z

Wow, this was the most relaxing fun I have had in a while. I would consider buying this game if it gets a steam release. Felt incredibly inspired by The Witness to me, with a bit less environmental integration and a more charming art style, though it does get slightly tiring to look at. The puzzles were super fun, I loved how little the game taught me. Took me a few puzzles to notice even the blue dots! The music complemented the atmosphere really well. I got fully stuck at one of the even/odd puzzles and I think it is logically impossible - but maybe my brain is just too small. Nonetheless finished the game, a great experience and I think I will honestly replay this in a week, it had the comfy atmosphere and challenge of solving a Sudoku on a rainy weekend morning. Thank you so much for this experience!

Some suuuper nitpicky points of improvement because I want to help or inspire at least a bit: I wish the symbols were a bit clearer: - The cross communicated its mechanic basically on its own, but especially the "4 or less" and "even/odd" panels kinda looked like nothing at all. - If a puzzle is solved, it would be great if it stayed solved, I triggered the victory fanfare a few too many times on accident. - The beams leading to the central statue kind of imply that they are powering it: I wouldn't have tried solving the final puzzle before finishing all other had I not read your other comment! - Turning the camera is very useful but I would love if it focused a bit on the puzzles while standing on top of it, and maybe had a compass pointing north, as I had to stop to reorient myself frequently when exploring.

Island Hustle by Danyclockworker 2023-10-03T11:42:57Z

Hi, you made a really funny game! I loved letting the villagers run around, stumble over each other and descend upon the trees like locusts. Sadly, I was too bad to reach the ending - I just could not get the ball into the hole (If that is even the solution!). I did, howver, really feel the implementation of the theme, as I had to pay close attention to the level geometry to be able to maneuver all the villagers around. I do feel like the camera could have been slightly less static: Maybe by allowing the player to move their cursor freely and only attract islanders when holding a mouse button? All in all, while the gameplay was a bit clunky, I really liked the idea, which is what I really value in a Game Jam. This, supported by really nice graphics and sound design, makes this an impressive entry. Good job and thanks for submitting!

Cache Me If You Can by Auros 2023-10-03T23:41:30Z

I kinda have a knack for endless games and this scratched that itch perfectly. From the energising rock loop to the surprisingly satisfying gunplay, I found myself wandering from room to room for upwards of 10 minutes without even thinking about why. Granted, the game doesn't exactly give much reason to, but even without much humor or story, this is a fun, satisfying and (for a Game Jam) surprisingly polished experience. The theme also doesn't really fit, except on a very surface level, but I don't value this that highly. Good Job!

Paper Pile Panic by Stellar Lily 2023-10-02T23:21:08Z

I played for 20mins straight, why the hell is this so addicting? Stellar humor and just the right amount of challenge kept me at it and even though it stuttered a bit in the browser, I wanted to keep on trying from where I left off. While the artstyle didn't blow me away initially, I appreciated it as the game went on, it is easy to look at and does its job quite well. Gameplay wise, the biggest improvement that you could make is to add a bit of snapping to the pages. While the completely free movement is at the core of the game, pages got stuck on the edges of the stack or the shredder a bit too frequently. The tasks themselves were super funny and I could see them being easily expandable. Regarding the theme, the space on the table never felt really limiting, the tasks may just as well have been placed in a queue. I'm not too sure how this could be fixed, perhaps by requiring a flat surface to fill them out? Not sure on this, but I honestly think the theme is secondary to making a cool game and you efinitely succeeded in that! I fully expect this to be the funniest game I will see in this Jam, thank you so much for the experience!

Ability Management by Unfinished632 2023-10-03T22:53:03Z

Hey, nice game! I don't really have much to say that others haven't given feedback on, but I want to stress that the game is amazingly polished for a Jam game! I did not encounter a single awkward physics behaviour, which is quite rare for a Jump and Run. I also really love that movement itself is an ability and not an automatic choice, I found myself selecting it by default in the beginning but having to drop it really sold the idea of limited space.

Snow Rose by Shiivers 2023-10-02T23:44:16Z

Very nice, I love story focused games in Game Jams! I struggled to find out how to open the first door, it would be really helpful if you added it to the controls section (For anyone looking for help: You need to press 'E' with the key). The controls layout is also a bit finnicky, but I can see how it is connected to a robot trying to control his body and respect the design choice.

Ventory's Inn by Teist 2023-10-02T22:55:21Z

Hey, this is a really nice submission! I was inspired to click by the amazing graphics, the game looks absolutely gorgeous and it contributes a lot to the game's overall mood and style. The sound is very good as well and matches the artstyle. Regarding the gameplay, it is solid and fits the theme perfectly, this is the very essence of "Limited Space". Whithin the constraints of a Game Jam, I also feel there is solid variety due to the slightly random variance in the requests so I could not go into full autopilot and stayed engaged. I do think the system could get repetitive as well and if this were to become a full-scale title, it would need some way of spicing up the gameplay loop as the game goes on, but for a Jam, the clean execution absolutely takes precedence.

Well done, I really liked it and it is a strong start to my ratings for this Jam!

Princess can jump by Xeniarta 2023-10-04T18:28:25Z

Hey, I think you did a really good job for a first game jam. As the others have said, the basic idea is solid and proven. Your art looks good as well and the interface is readable. Your mechanics are where I think the game has the most room to grow: The jump feels a bit too high and it is weirdly tricky to jump over fireballs while stying under the platform. Speaking of: The platform feels a bit pointless because you need to spend your jump to get on top and the chance is quite high that you then don't have it for the next fireball. It would also have fit the theme even more (And reduced the chance of a softlock) if they side walls had collision or would loop the player around! Overall, a simple yet reasonably effective entry and something that is surprisingly polished for a first game. Good Job!
