LD24 — Evolution

Tiny Evolution Adventure by AdventureIslands 2012-09-16T09:28:00

I couldn't make it through the first level. I felt I had to eat almost everything, as there was no counter to tell me how much I had to eat, so that was a bit irritating. The music was nice in the beginning, but got a little repetitive. I wished for the ability to swim *down* so many times, instead of having to endure the slowness of gravity.

Moustache & Mukset by Follett 2012-08-27T13:22:00

D: My inner Grammar Nazi exploded at the start screen...
The game is a nice idea, but even on the 'Low' version, it didn't run very well on my PC.
The controls weren't quite optimal. Aiming was very difficult, because the units simply didn't do what you wanted.
I liked the graphics style though :D
The highlight was definitely the Mister Bean voice-acting.

Goat Boxing by frogalicious 2012-08-27T13:00:00

I liked the "meaaah"ing sounds. But it seemed impossible to breed definitively better goats. Got stuck at Frank.
Perhaps make it possible to buy goats? A new goat every time you go into the shop, with random stats? It might make it a little more interesting, and stop me breeding Goat 3 with its father Goat 1.

Oneway by azurenimbus 2012-09-02T18:05:00

I liked this game. Nice audio, really polished feeling, and fairly unique. Got it finished. I liked the visuals too.

Dinosaurs must Die! by tompudding 2012-08-27T14:42:00

Haha. That was great. I absolutely loved the Mar Might storyline, was laughing for ages. Unfortunately I forgot to put my earphones in, so I can't rate on audio.. (I don't even know if there was any?). Sorry about that!
A very good game, with the two parts being completely different. The dinosaur part was pretty hard (I lost D:).
Very fun, would recommend it!

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-27T12:46:00

Ragzouken: Thanks!
Yeah. I ran out of time for sounds... But if it helps, you can hum a chiptune while you play? And make little "pew-pew" noises when you shoot?

Zed: Well, at least you got that far :D My mother managed to kill herself with her own minigun bullets before the enemies even spawned. Twice.
I think the restricted view adds to the atmosphere. However I agree that I probably overdid it needs to be a little less restricting.
The carpet is modelled on the one in my Granny's living room. Hers doesn't have blood stains though :(

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-27T12:47:00

And by Ragzouken, I of course meant @dvdking too.

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-27T13:38:00

Ditto: Wow. I'm overwhelmed. I really didn't think anyone would bother trying to make it to the end. Thank you! Made the whole thing worth it :D
You do know that you can hold down the mouse button?
And yeah, I know that clicking thing is a problem, but there's not really a whole lot I can do about it :(
So congratulations. How many tries did it take you?

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-27T23:20:00

@Devaki thanks man. I was going for old school :D

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-28T21:41:00

@puzzlem00n you're not the first to say they're going to come back to it. I suppose if it's worth playing twice, it mustn't be too bad? Thanks for the comment!
@BrothersT yeah, I didn't have time to make different sprites, or a moving camera to centre on the player. But I think the way the fog moves with the player might help? And about the flames, I wouldn't suggest running into them at all, haha. But I could make them more transparent... And getting lost in the crowd is part of the game! Mayhem is fun! Thanks for the words of wisdom, I'll keep them in mind for the post compo version.

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-29T06:09:00

Hey, congrats everybody!
I suppose it is a bit easier than I thought, yeah. But I did most of my playtesting before I added health packs. At that time there were twice the number of enemies in a level too :3
@RawBits is it okay if I put the video in the Op?

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-08-29T16:39:00

@Puzzlem00n: you read my mind, haha. I'll also actually cap the player health, and add knockback. And you should see my idea for four player. On the same machine :3

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-09-01T10:17:00

@Minimax911 cool, thanks for the comment. The spoon is pretty badass isn't it?
You can take the screenshot with the PrintScreen key, and post it here or tweet me with it (@iandioch)
Congrats on winning!

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-09-04T16:12:00

Haha. I think I made a typo, and that Spoony has twice the range of the Smackerel. But Spoony is meant to be inferior... But yeah, balancing is an issue.
Thanks for the comments guys!

Revolvolution by iandioch 2012-09-16T18:34:00

AdventureIslands: yeah. I'm fixing those things in the post-compo version.

matthias_zarzecki: hmm. You're the first to complain about the text. I didn't think there was a lot. I'll give it some thought. Yeah, the enemies will kill each other if you line them up. I'm planning on adding a bigger playfield too. But when it gets more open it gets easier I think.

SURVIVE by Ragzouken 2012-08-27T14:12:00

It's a fantastic looking game, of that I have no doubt. But gameplay-wise, I had little idea what was going on. And yes, the sound wasn't quite perfect :P

Kitten Farts by scoots 2012-08-27T13:02:00

I would play the game, but I'm not too comfortable installing all of those things... Sorry! It looks great, and the title is the best I've seen yet!

EVILUTION by GothFraex 2012-08-27T15:13:00

This was great. Being nervous of what's around every corner, while being pushed on by the fear of the enemies behind you. It was a great experience, but didn't really fit the theme... at all?

GeometryEvo by dvdking 2012-08-27T13:56:00

I really liked it. The piano-key 'music' really suited the mood, and I laughed at the stages of evolution. But I sometimes wasn't sure what I was doing, and whether I'd won or lost...

Space Mayham by DevWouter 2012-08-29T20:30:00

"Gametemplate.exe is not a valid win32 application". On an XP?
I downloaded the "Windows (ZIP)".
Also, it might be more helpful to name the game something other than "no_setup" so that it doesn't get lost in my downloads.

DrinkMilk by Ditto 2012-08-27T12:19:00

XNA D: Sorry, can't play it. It looks good though!

The bloody princess of Ludumia by khoa 2012-08-31T21:05:00

I loved this game. I won after killing 85 Ludumis in 245 seconds :D
I liked the way you could only indirectly influence the reproduction. I ran around killing half my ludumis as soon as some appeared with three bars on their heads. (related: am I the only one who thinks they look a little like toasters?)
The story was great, the art was unique. Frankly, the pictures don't show it off very well. Great job khoa.

Threevolution by dredlockz 2012-08-27T12:30:00

Haha. A great little puzzler. At first, when I didn't understand the rules, I managed to block off the leftmost column with just the smallest organism, leaving me with just a 3x4 grid. I struggled ahead, and won. Loved the ending screen!

My Apartment by SpectreNectar 2012-08-27T13:31:00

Score 771. I have no idea what that means?
Very funny. "This is not the Sims" whenever you try to go into the bathroom, "Windows needs to install updates". And then just leaving my poor mother on the sofa asking for coffe for 12 hours.
One note: The words ran off the ends of some of the text boxes. Also, how on earth do you get self-esteem?

terravolve by Vordux 2012-08-27T15:14:00

It looks good, but I'm on XP. Perhaps you should rename the link "Windows Vista or Higher" or something?

Darwin In Space by Misericorde 2012-08-27T14:55:00

Haha. This is... quite something. I have to ask, why do the priests have flashy blue cyber-eyes?

Assimilation by KR-Eddie 2012-08-31T20:53:00

It's a fantastic looking game. Those 8 character directions really makes the difference. But there was broken English in some of the text (When you looked at the neighbour's door, for instance). That was my only complaint. The shortness? Better really polished but too short than really long but unpolished. And this had polish in bucketloads. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to a full version. (Perhaps it might even be suitable for the October Challenge?)

8-Bit Big Bang (that was the origonal name, I never changed it, it was 8-bit) by Generalgore 2012-08-31T20:33:00

Really love the idea of this game, and the aesthetic is fantastic. Combined with the great audio, you got that universe-y mood just perfect.
However, my one complaint is that I seemed to be have been unable to shoot. I was right clicking like nobody's business, but nothing was happening...
The highlight was definitely the visuals. Great job!

Stop Evolution Tower Defense by Teknik 2012-08-31T20:44:00

Haha, loved this. Playing from the opposite side to the evolutionists was a great idea. And it's fun to play! It's also pretty well-balanced, surprisingly so. But by now I have enough units to be pretty much invincible :(
The art was great. I laughed when I saw that you were defending heaven...
Great little game, all in all. Good work! A win-condition might be a valuable addition though (after X number of waves defeated or something would do)

Evolution of Man by tupperwarespoon 2012-09-16T10:04:00

Interesting idea. I liked the maze game, got through it without incident. But on the platformer, I fell through the floor once, and that led me to fall infinitely. Then, when I played through it again, the game crashed when I reached the flag (Playing on Windows XP. Third time lucky? Nope. It crashed when I reached the flag again. I would love to have been able to play the later games, but I can't :(
On a side note, the controls in the platformer felt a little floaty, and the camera was too zoomed in and scrolled a bit too slowly, especially when you were falling.

SimEvo by Joror 2012-08-31T20:25:00

I love the idea of this game. And I like the way it was implemented. The pictures were nice, the UI was great.
But (I don't like this bit!) it had some problems:
It froze randomly for me every once in a while... (Windows XP if that makes a difference)
When some body parts were placed on my Ludum Darosaur they were teleported far away from the central "Body" piece.
The select button looked a bit odd.
But, I love the game. I've kept playing it. And I imagine what my animal would look like (with Feathers, Arms, and a Trunk): Perhaps (this is just me dreaming here!) you could add some sort of visual representation of the creature? Just an idea. It would be amazing if it worked.
Also, the fact that you left out the 'F' in 'Of' in the body part names gave it that little bit of humour ;)
Loved the idea, loved the game, love to see it "evolve" into something more (See what I did there?!)
Keep it up!

Growing Tree by Devaki 2012-08-27T15:00:00

I like this game. It's quirky and unique. My only complaint is that it's hard to see what's happening at times, so dodging things can be difficult. Because of that, I didn't get past fire D:
I liked that little tuney-thing going on in the background.

Kitty Breeder 2012 by turnip 2012-08-27T15:22:00

10 stars for theme, it fits both Evolution and 1000kittens :D
The soundtrack was ace.
The graphics were great, especially the picture of the kittie when you pick it up.
Really polished feeling. Well done!

Evulotion : Adventures of Dyslecsia by caribou 2012-09-16T09:31:00

It ran fine for me first time. But, alas, I couldn't do anything but sit on the "waiting for players" screen. I therefore can't rate on gameplay, but the graphics and sound are nice.

Evulotion : Adventures of Dyslecsia by caribou 2012-09-16T09:41:00

EDIT: I made a call on the IRC, and found a player. I played as God (and won!).
I couldn't see any major differences in my 3 mobs. Perhaps a healthbar above each one would have been helpful?
I think the gameplay could be great if you had enough players.
Overall, I liked the game. An AI would have been nice so I could play on my own.

Evulotion : Adventures of Dyslecsia by caribou 2012-09-16T10:23:00

EDIT 2: after some more IRC'ing, played a 4 player game. This is fantastic. It has a few "quirks", but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Btw, God is super OP. (haha, sounds weird now that I type it)

'The Neon Pink Philosophy' by Zed 2012-08-27T12:18:00

Haha. A great game, very polished feeling. I only got 399 points (the bulk of them in levels 1 + 2), so I can't comment on the "true ending", but what I saw of the cutscenes was very funny and enjoyable.
Difficulty? Pretty hard to get 700 points.
Music? the backing track got a bit repetitive after a while, but it suited the feeling of the game.
Graphics? The neon theme was nice and bright. Only problem was probably my own incometence: I kept thinking my gun-sight thing was an enemy, and tried to avoid it.
Fun? Very.
BUT:
It wouldn't exit? I tried escape, but it didn't do anything. So, it took away from the polished feeling a little bit.
Also, some green squares appeared too close to the spikey obstacles to be obtainable without harming yourself.
Highlight? Definately when Fred evolved the final time. I feel a meme coming on.

Gems of the Evolving Land by RawBits 2012-09-16T09:51:00

I liked the game. It had character, and the graphics weren't bad. It feels well thought-out. I especially enjoyed driving about in the car, but, alas, I ran out of oil fairly quickly.
Overall: nice job, feels very finished!

The Debate by KevinWorkman 2012-08-30T19:14:00

Great for 4 hours' work! And I did like the idea of Evolutionism and Creationism fighting it out in a PONG game. Although, I did notice the lack of functionality to play from the side of Creationism...
And that AI is really hard D:

Praepoch by Connor 2012-09-03T20:23:00

A nice little game. Less fighting and more fleeing, the combat wasn't great. But the animations were fantastic, and the audio was nice too.
It all felt very polished.

CellEvolution by gbear605 2012-08-25T13:07:00

Web version couldn't load any of the files, so crashed.

CellEvolution by gbear605 2012-08-25T13:08:00

Have you considered uploading it here, where it does most of the work for you? http://www.staticvoidgames.com/
It's specifically for Processing and Java games, and takes all the hassle out. So you could have a working web applet.

CellEvolution by gbear605 2012-08-25T15:04:00

Save them in a '/data/' folder and Processing will automagically include them.

CellEvolution by gbear605 2012-08-25T15:11:00

Haha. A pretty nifty platformer, all things considered. The last level was more /annoying/ than hard, but the bonus at the end more than made up for it!
Also a positive was the scientific accuracy, of all of the cell parts being labelled. However, I'm not quite sure how scientifically viable it is for a single cell to evolve into a kitten...
One note: Make the hitboxes for the parts a little bigger. You had to be in just the right place to pick them up, instead of just touching them.
Great little game altogether though!

Ludum Card Evolution by Atridas 2012-08-30T19:56:00

I love card games, but just couldn't make head nor tail of how to play this. I kept trying, and sort of had an idea by the time I lost, but still wasn't too sure.
The music was good at first, but it got a little repetitive after a while (imho).
I did like the graphics. Kind of programmer-art, but with extra rainbows.
But, the fact that you used things that weren't made during the compo time period and weren't made by you makes this against the rules of the Compo, and needs to be moved to the Jam. Sorry man!

Beast Feast by UndergroundPixel 2012-08-29T16:37:00

It seemed like a nice game, but I was useless at it, so I didn't get far. I'm just trying to figure out, is it possible to lose?
The graphics were nice, the music was catchy, and the idea was sound. Nice game all in all :D

One Last Chance by recursive frog 2012-09-17T18:56:00

Interesting concept. Unfortunately it couldn't pick up the accelerometers on my phone (Android 2.2 "Froyo") so I had to play the web version, which was undoubtedly not ideal.

There were a few glitches (Em kept restarting talking to me when she had went to get the drinks, and she was occasionally invisible and/or teleported to next to the fridge.

Also, I picked up the book, and then couldn't put it down anywhere...

But I think this is promising. It wasn't perfect, but it has potential.

The house by DalsGames 2012-08-31T20:09:00

"You evolved so much that you escaped" :D "Score: 0" D:
I liked this game. The audio was good, the graphics were nice. Sure there were bugs here and there (I walked through the door in the top left, but wasn't tp'd anywhere, so it threw an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException...) (the ghosts just... didn't work. I think if they had been omitted altogether then the game would have come off as much more polished, and still just as fun). I did wonder how you collected 'coins'?
Overall, I think it has great potential. I liked the graphics, and the ghost noise was great. Good job!

LD25 — You are the Villain

My damn coffee. by dementor561 2012-12-21T17:48:00

Haha, great storyline :D
Loved the gameplay, but when I died it crashed, and on restart I had to sit through the whole story again D:

Tinysoft 2 by wurstknifte 2012-12-26T11:14:00

A great game, full of little subtle jokes (as far as I can tell, it's all about Bill Gates and Microsoft).
Just a little tip for the rest of you, type HELP into the console.

The Button by Tim Bumpus 2012-12-19T20:35:00

I really liked it! The platforming was a bit floaty, but manageable. I loved the story, you managed to be serious without seeming like a douche. Excellent! (some really atmospheric music would've been nice, and yeah, the last room was the best by far)

Mad Princess by AdventureIslands 2012-12-17T22:20:00

Really liked it. The bomb level was a pain (do you need to hit with every single bomb?) but the concept is nice and the graphics were great. The music wasn't too shabby either :P
I did find the ability to place traps during the win/lose screen a bit odd though.

Behind Blue Pixels by azurenimbus 2012-12-20T21:34:00

A few too many enemies and dying when you hit one made me unable to even reach the boss I'm reading about in the comments - make it a little easier next time :P
I liked the clean graphics, and the concept is pretty interesting. But oh so hard D: :D

A Light To Kill By by Mythalore 2012-12-19T21:50:00

Interesting game. Couldn't pick up the screwdriver after the gun, but from reading the comments this was a problem other people had too... :(
The graphics are amazing for 48 hours. It looks like that screwdriver problem is the only thing wrong with it...

An Barun Rua by iandioch 2012-12-19T00:01:00

Oh Jesus you're right. How on earth did I manage that? I also noticed that two seconds before he goes to hit the button, he's holding a gun in that hand... :3

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I'll have a look at this lag. But I think I need to play all your games first!

An Barun Rua by iandioch 2012-12-23T19:41:00

Drabiter: Freeze on startup, or mid-game? Were you playing the Webstart or Applet, and the Irish or English version?

Spy Trouble by Sos 2012-12-18T11:28:00

Haha. Wow.

3vil kill3r r0b0tz by Nsmurf 2012-12-19T21:03:00

Liked it. Perhaps you could have different types of robot to target different types of human? Also, hard to only select one robot to send it somewhere. I could see this becoming a full game though!

PANIC BANK by Shugor 2012-12-20T22:22:00

Love that music! But there wasn't a lot to the game, unfortunately :( The art was good too though :D

Bad Kitty by aare 2012-12-23T16:06:00

Excellent game! Kind of stealthy, kind of action-y, but overall hilarious and fun. Easily a highlight of the compo for me. My only problem was when I was caught because the old man pushed me into the green circle...

SUPER Witch Hunter Pro by Gungnir 2012-12-20T17:14:00

That was pretty good. It was a little boring when you had to stand around as nothing at all happened, but I did love kicking the warlock goat off the cliff :D

Victor Grozny by DustyStylus 2012-12-30T22:02:00

A really interesting concept, but just a tiny bit too fiddly D: I really liked how the audio synced with the gameplay though.

Satan's Booger by ddionisio 2012-12-17T18:42:00

Liked the game, the highlight was definitely the graphics! WHO'S A CUTE LITTLE ANGEL WITH A SWORD?!

Cat Licker by Just_delete_it 2012-12-23T15:45:00

Needs a Kinect version, where you are the tongue and you need to flop about to lick the cats.
Interesting idea. I think you should see a healthcare professional.

ASMOSNOS by Mase 2012-12-19T21:42:00

Haha, that was great. Particularly loved the dancing. Also, that art is incredible. You must have cheated, nobody could make that much awesomeness in one weekend?! :D

Elevator Evil by 8bitDamage 2012-12-20T21:46:00

A really interesting mechanic, but I had no idea what floor any of the people wanted to go to, so I accidentally was a good lift :( Fun game though!

Run N' Destroy by killmonday 2012-12-19T21:23:00

Really great - just a pity that I'm too useless at it to get past the second level :( That music was fantastic! Also, laughed at nude caveman. A lot.

4Goats1Hay by Folis 2012-12-19T21:58:00

Haha. For what little there was, it was fantastic. Please flesh this out so I can do more with it?!

Atomic Creep Spawner!! by deepnight 2012-12-20T21:14:00

Great game. Was I the only one who found it really hard? Perhaps a little more monster variation (ranged units, ones with shields?) but altogether a nice idea and, even better, incredibly polished!

Snap by fishbrain 2012-12-19T21:14:00

Wow. A very clever game, presented superbly. You really managed to get a message across. The sound effects were great too.

The Maze of Evil by RawBits 2012-12-25T13:34:00

It would have been nice to have had some sort of indication of how many potions the hero had left, but I really enjoyed the game nonetheless :D Good job!

A Wheelie Good Time by df458 2012-12-26T20:18:00

I liked it! That running animation was great :D And the music was nice.

THE BUTCHER by pythong 2012-12-21T15:26:00

Haha, liked it. Impressed at the clean cutting. The only improvement I can think of is getting extra points for a clean head-chop.

Spare Pieces by sauronz 2012-12-19T21:33:00

Really fun! It's a little hard to see if you're disguised or not, but it had some great strategy bits :D And bonus matter for visiting the goats was a great idea! Loved the art too - pixely but arty. The stone was a little bit repetitive, it might've been an idea to have a few different ground textures.

NONEX by feiss 2012-12-18T11:49:00

I really loved the aesthetic, and the idea was interesting :3
