LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Disintegrate by zenmumbler 2017-12-14T05:54:27Z

I liked the eerie mood, and strange effects of the orbs. I'm glad there was no actual gore or horror elements, just that kind of atmosphere. The puzzles were neat, and I had to jot down the symbols to solve the 2nd (brought back fond memories of the Myst series!). Sometimes it was hard to select the button I wanted- a crosshair or something would've been helpful there.

Disintegrate by zenmumbler 2017-12-14T22:23:28Z

@zenmumbler The buttons did light up- the reason was just not seeing exactly where the center of the screen was, plus the buttons being close together, so I'd have to "feel my way" by moving the mouse around a lot, and a slight movement could cause me to select the wrong one.

Synapse by Geckoo1337 2017-12-27T01:12:43Z

I like the aesthetic, and the puzzles are simple, but interesting enough to be a nice calming experience. I used the strategy of lining up synapses vertically first, then horizontally, then vertically again if needed. The controls were frustrating though- most of my extra movements were because the synapses slid past where I wanted them, often many times in a row. I'd prefer if a single button press just caused one clean rotation. Overall, cool entry, a solid basis for iterating new challenges to the puzzles.

Tail by conk 2017-12-28T19:18:44Z

I played on mouse and keyboard. The movement was good for swimming around exploring, if you like taking your time as I do. But once enemies showed up, it was hard to hit them. It required a lot of firing, and missing, which created even more enemies. But I did enjoy sometimes blasting thru a wall, knowing an enemy might be there, and I was already facing them- that felt like the right amount of challenge. Sometimes the game would restart in a mob of enemies. This game has a unique mood that I enjoy a lot- a combination of the murky turquoise colors, the mix of melancholy and upbeat music, the dead/skeleton fish (which was really cute when it looked around independent of its tail). It's like a cute fish afterlife.

Critters Inc. by stefenism 2017-12-08T23:50:31Z

Nice music, and the little critters were kinda cute, so I tried to ship rather than toast them! The animation where the big critters get the wind knocked out of them is funny.

Star Destroyer by Jaloko 2017-12-07T04:06:00Z

This is a really pretty game. It was very easy though - around 300ish seconds it became harder because I got hit once and the lights kept getting brighter, making it hard to see where stars were. From then on, I only got hit because the entire screen was just yellow, and the stars were blocked out except for some white stars. I'm not sure if that extreme brightness was supposed to happen; it was pretty though.

NeonTropics by neontropics 2017-12-12T05:12:14Z

I like the neon art style and audio, and it's neat to be able to walk between screens. I thought the first enemy looked like an evil TV :) The difficulty progression started out good, until at one point I was swarmed with enemies and missiles and had to cheat to see the other levels. There was once a bug where I'd respawn stuck in the upper left corner. It'd be cool if the trees/bushes provided some cover from enemy fire, and if the main character glowed a different color than the enemies.

For Better or For Worse by valandre 2017-12-07T00:06:40Z

Beautiful music and old-footage style visuals, cool animations and ghost effects. Loved the atmosphere, the poetic story. I was glad for the save points, I wasn't too good at avoiding the shadows. It's really polished and feels complete, definitely one of my favorite LD40s!

Procedural City Maze by artmajcher 2017-12-06T23:38:30Z

Cool city environment, nice use of the theme. I accidentally walked off the path a lot and got reset - I wish the paths were closed instead, since the pathfinding/memory challenges are interesting enough on their own.

Freedom For Ball by rasblo 2017-12-24T20:12:50Z

This is a cute game with a funny description. Like others, I'd prefer WASD, and it was sometimes hard to tell where walls were. The description picture is misleading, promising an immersive 1st person view, but delivering a top-down view. It was funny when I sometimes backtracked to avoid detection, and my friends all huddled together, facing in, as if discussing a plan.

Radiation Sickness by olkeencole 2017-12-10T00:29:20Z

Picture looks cool, description sounds cool, I want to try it, please fix link :)

Radiation Sickness by olkeencole 2017-12-22T21:13:05Z

I like the weird environments, nice colors. Level 2 was cool how you could strategically absorb radiation to create safe landing spots, in case you fell off a platform. At first I thought level 3 was the end, until I realized radiation affects your jump, and the portal was on top of the tower- a neat "Aha!" moment. I got stuck in level 4 - I couldn't figure out the right amount of radiation needed to make that jump. It seemed like the red stuff stunted my jump, but the purple increased it? Hard to tell, and the cursor tended to get stuck on things and not follow my view. I also fell off the world once in level 3 and had to restart- it'd be good to have boundaries there. Overall, a nice and chill scifi/exploration/puzzle game, would be cool to see developed further.

Color Bound by Charles Cox 2017-12-07T19:05:15Z

Cool idea, nice clean art style. There was an interesting variety of enemies, and I had fun playing. Only bug I saw was that I couldn't shoot mines that formed on the left edge of the screen. Being able to control the firing direction would be cool.

Radiant Barrels by x1212 2017-12-22T21:55:53Z

The setting/colors caught my eye; the models look great, and it was oddly cute how those boats with no people followed me, with a life of their own! I found the music to be distracting/not fitting the calm visuals/gameplay. I would've liked a larger camera view, and the ability to throw barrels faster. The game over screen was neat, and funny how three boats sort of huddled/danced over my grave.

EYAM by donvermo 2017-12-26T01:15:26Z

This is a neat idea, though even with the game speed all the way up, it felt like a lot of time was spent just waiting to get enough currency to build another thing, while the town deteriorates. I understand the art assets were limited, but it'd be helpful if an upgraded item was indicated somehow (highlighted maybe?) so you don't have to just remember it.

Aquariumus - Too Many Fishes ! by GoZz 2017-12-15T05:14:03Z

This was challenging- you have to keep a lot of plates spinning, and balance is key. It's easy to lose quickly if you forget just one thing, like the temperature being too high. The sound effects were funny, especially some of the spells. I like the clean art, and how all the creatures look unique, and cute.

Moths by narve 2017-12-26T22:25:15Z

I played the post-jam version. This had some funny details and goofy music/sounds that fit the mood. I found it hard to hit the moths that were flying around the cereal, and ran out of time a lot because of that. Cereals in the hallway were usually already spoiled, so it seemed better just to camp around the first rooms. It was funny that one of the moths spawned from the toilet!

Quest for Harmony (Audio is required) by unfinished 2017-12-06T01:20:17Z

I got the hang of it pretty quick- it's like an interactive audiobook. The idea of stumbling into a strange, sound-based society is really cool, especially how they resolve differences with harmony. I wanted to keep discovering more about this society. Overall, very nice and inspiring.

Project Lucy by Aviland 2017-12-24T20:29:14Z

I could only play a little while, because of the swaying camera/motion sickness. The few townspeople I met were amusing, and I would've liked to be able to explore more. The changing colors were neat, it'd be cool if you did more visual effects like that and just kept the camera still.

Escape by asunoz 2017-12-12T06:27:45Z

Really interesting mechanics that add replay value, and the stealth gameplay is fun. But, the subject matter + the gunshots at the end risks implying the old "mental illness = violence" trope. It might be better to escape with some other object, like a disguise, or hard evidence against the clinic. Other than that, the mood with the shifting lights is great, and the random cactus puzzle is neat.

Network Invader by drazil100 2017-12-11T22:11:32Z

Fun, cool aesthetic, mood, and good music, especially the menu screen. It was kind of hard to navigate though - I got hit by things it looked like I avoided, and went unharmed through a bunch of enemies, so couldn't get a sense of how to best maneuver, or aim. So I stayed to the sides and shot across, while moving up and down to hit enemies by chance. (I used keyboard/mouse)

Justify the Means by Goat Toaster Games 2017-12-11T22:59:23Z

Beautiful art, nice balance of easy-to-read narrative and action, and neat world-building details. It'll be interesting to see this game fleshed out!

Asteroid breaker by smiley 2017-12-06T00:54:32Z

Great music! I wish the thrust sound was quieter (or just an initial sound) so it didn't block out the music as much. I couldn't get the hang of steering the ship, but I still enjoyed trying due to the game's nice mood. It's cool how the enemy interaction is a non-violent tug-of-war. Overall, a nice and chill game!

BufferMAN: Hack 80's style! by Akryllax 2017-12-06T23:12:27Z

Nice aesthetics, including the blur effect. Good variety of obstacles, and I enjoyed looking around level 2. The way it is right now, felt like breaking into a maximum security museum. I'd be interested to see further development on this game!

Red Friday by martiangames 2017-12-26T19:47:20Z

It was fun to walk around looking at everything, watching people walk around, and it's not too long before you encounter the Coffee vendor. I stood at the checkout with the carrot, but was close enough to the Coffee person that he got it through the window. This was pretty funny, with lighthearted quests that are interesting because of quirky interactions. To be honest, I wish the strip club wasn't there, it started the game off with a negative mood for me, though the rest of the environment was cute and positive. The ending was surreal! Overall, enjoyed playing. My favorite part was switching the elevator direction, and seeing what the AI do and say.

Between Stations by Sand-Gardeners 2017-12-26T23:03:34Z

This is one of my favorite entries. The audio is great- there's different static tracks, typing sounds, a variety of music. Some of the channels are really funny, some spooky, others surreal. I especially liked the news story of strange sounds in the mountains. It was one of the first I found, and made me think there would be a storyline about some phenomenon affecting the town you're in, and would affect all the channels. EG: I thought it was connected to the car ride story, but all the channels turned out to be pretty independent. Still really fun though, and gave me some ideas. Nice work! PS: this is way better than real TV.

DEEPER by vizitas 2017-12-07T03:23:25Z

This was pretty relaxing, nice mood and sounds. I surfaced with nothing a few times before realizing there were other paths. At first I thought I'd get lost, but happily kept finding new things. Later, I ran out of air trying to pull 2 boxes thru a narrow opening, which I thought was the last place I hadn't seen, but wasn't sure. It'd be cool if I could mark places I'd been already.

Rocket Jump by RahmKota3 2017-12-11T21:47:53Z

This was fun, it brought back nice memories of UT99's impact hammer (but without its awful noise!). I had trouble with the invisible platforms- I was able to shoot/jump from 2 or 3 of them, but couldn't get high enough to collect more ammo, so couldn't get past that level. Maybe have a simpler level to introduce those. I liked being able to adjust mouse sensitivity.

Untouched by Virtual Turtle Studio 2017-12-15T05:38:10Z

This was a relaxing audio/visual experience. I enjoyed zooming in 100% on a lake while growing trees, then across the lake I see a blocky shadow rise up, and know exactly what just happened behind me. It was a dramatic moment! I wished I could freely fly around with WASD- that way it'd reduce the amount of clicking. To reduce clicking even more, it'd be nice if holding down the mouse would just keep adding trees (which would be fine if movement was moved to the keyboard).

FLOCK by BlackAtlas 2017-12-26T00:44:59Z

I love the environment, it got me wondering: what's in these rocks that is so well protected? I couldn't get the hang of the controls though. Just when I thought, okay, left is up, right is down, I'd turn directions and it'd be something else. I wish each key had one consistent direction or movement. It was also hard to tell just how close projectiles were to the birds. I think it'd be cool if the camera was closer to the flock, as if among them. Also, there could be some birds chilling by the water, and if you flew close enough they'd join the flock/ replenish lives.

Trip to the Earth by guilhermesouza 2017-12-07T04:27:30Z

Cute intro story, great art and music. I was able to manipulate the obstacles away from me pretty well, but it was still hard to avoid getting hit a lot. I only got the ending of destroying the Earth.

Back To Shelter by Matcheryt 2017-12-07T00:23:07Z

Nice mood and nature sounds. I liked how there was just enough light to see the path, and exploring the different campsites. But I didn't care for the sudden, un-fightable giant monster (maybe it's just that I'm not a horror fan). I wished I could use the flashlight as I collected batteries, and that its brightness would increase each time.

No-Pressure by ZAX 2017-12-25T23:32:22Z

Cool concept and art, and the calming ambient/bell music was good, and much needed! It took a few tries to get the rhythm down - the best I did was 1 of everything, plus 3 calls, 3 scripts, but still got an "F" grade. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do something extra to win or do better. I liked running around knocking things over, and it's funny how there's things like a toilet and giant rock just sitting out in the open! I wished I could put the cup/mug down on any surface- having to run back to the original table ate up a lot of time.

Crimsonite by aman1822 2017-12-11T23:27:33Z

The art style is cool. The instruction screen is great: "Kill all the bad guys to receive a Cupcake" made me laugh out loud, also the Minion animation in that screen is hilarious! The gameplay was a bit difficult- there was often no Crimsonite around, while enemies kept increasing, and it didn't seem to help enough for the amount of enemies there were. I also thought the glowing purple towers would do something, like regenerate health. Overall, nice details and presentation.

Crimsonite by aman1822 2017-12-11T23:27:37Z

double post somehow, sorry

Pacific Parkour League (PPL) by alexpritc 2017-12-07T03:46:39Z

The ocean setting is nice, refreshing for a challenging game. I'm pretty bad at parkour games - I couldn't get past level 2, but got really close a bunch of times. I always wish I could restart from the platform I fell off instead of at the beginning. Or, if I could switch on a mode like that.

caffeine trip by meadjix 2017-12-07T00:51:02Z

Really funny game, it was fun to climb around the city, and the visual effect from too much coffee was funny. Level two was hilarious, and its music very fitting! I couldn't get past those white platforms, I wish there was a save point near them.

Overcharged by CatsPawsGames 2017-12-06T03:52:12Z

This is a neat concept. First off, love how it looks, especially the weird architecture, and details like the ship above and how enemies dissolve. It took a few tries, and at first it felt like too many enemies too soon. But once I figured out what it takes to move fast and survive, it's pretty fun.

Helicopter Crate Overload by Bificommander 2017-12-12T00:00:46Z

Nice looking game. In level one, the chopper is oriented away from most of the instructions, so I flew straight out into nowhere for a while before realizing the island/more instructions are to the right. I couldn't spend much time playing because of the rotating camera, wish it had been more still. Other than that, seems like a challenging yet relaxing game. Love the option to choose levels too.

Forgotten Cubes by kariamoss 2017-12-14T05:00:02Z

This is a fun and relaxing puzzle game, with a beautiful vivid and dreamlike art style. The first level is an effective tutorial, and the 3rd added an interesting new maneuvering challenge. I only had some trouble with the 2nd level- it wasn't clear to me why some cubes would fall and others wouldn't. I was glad I could still pass if I lost one. The game has a cute feeling, like baby cubes following its parent. Nice, fitting music too. The only weird thing is that moving left was Q instead of A, so I used the arrows instead.

Solaris by Villfuk02 2017-12-07T17:58:45Z

Beautiful game, reminded me of fireworks. It was relaxing, and interesting how certain stars would only join based on your mass. It was fun to outsmart red stars, and interesting how green stars could save you but also caused a new challenge of red/white stars being clustered together. I felt like maybe red stars took too much out of you - it took a while for me to get to 40-50s but seconds to go back to 10s. Overall, cool entry!

Stealing Cubes by VengeurK 2017-12-06T22:20:59Z

This is one of my favorite LD40s. The visuals and strange environment are great. Just when I thought I could relax while looting on top of buildings, those spheres evolved and climbed up after me! They seemed to have some personality. I'd love to see this game get developed further.

Crosstalk by shinyogre 2017-12-28T19:42:38Z

Very cool concept, though I couldn't figure out what the trick is. I was trying to visualize different 3D shapes, trying to make perfect prisms, but the solutions always seemed to be 2D shapes. Like others, I wished the sound was something else more pleasant. This reminded me of adding pages to books in Myst, where you'd be rewarded with clearer messages each time. I felt like I was decoding or unlocking something secret. It'd be awesome if this was developed into a full puzzle game. :)

Widget Satchel by Noble Robot 2017-12-06T19:51:16Z

@wikidbotta Thanks! The new build (7) fixed the buy menu - it's x on controller and E on keyboard. @the-triumvirate Thank you! I'd love to see level 3 finished too. @mateusculpo Thanks for the feedback, especially about the music ;) @fluidvolt Thank you, glad you liked it. Big thanks for your music comments!

Widget Satchel by Noble Robot 2017-12-07T02:41:07Z

@alex-bezuska We just added a Mac build (OS 10.9+). Thanks for the heads up.

The herbs of destiny by ElChacko 2017-12-10T00:49:12Z

Interesting mechanics, I like how there's different routes and strategies to use, like going under rocks, or swinging from the ceiling. Sometimes I aimed for a tree branch and missed, and got pulled really far away. It was funny how I could sometimes dislodge enemies and send them flying. Nice music too.

Enjoy the Flowers by Ethos 2017-12-06T05:04:23Z

Really cute game, the happy flowers caught my eye. The bee music - the bumbling bass and buzzing sounds are so funny! It's exactly what bees would listen to in a car, or in this case, what a bee car would play. I got flipped over flying off the hill, and so couldn't reach the flowers at the top.

Night City Challenge by makerart 2017-12-10T01:46:47Z

Awesome art style, and nice 1st song. But I had to stop playing because of the camera whirling around too much, had some motion sickness. I would've loved to explore the world more, it'd be cool if there was a 1st person mode so you had more control of the view.

This is not a normal village... by rohezal 2017-12-13T04:06:20Z

This is an interesting way to tell a story, and the narrations happening around the fire adds to the storytelling feel. I could only find four items though: glue, fake poison, and fishing rod + magnet. I knew from the screenshots there were other items, but couldn't find them. I kept thinking, am I supposed to poison the well? I tried fishing for something in the well, and also wandered off the path aimlessly looking for other places. But even though I couldn't solve it, this is a cool idea that definitely leaves an impression.

Coffee Break by Akscan 2017-12-10T02:08:15Z

The day/night cycle was a nice touch. Like others have said, it's hard to get a lock on an interactive object, and there's little incentive to use the coffee. But for a 48 hr compo, it's a nice environment with some good ideas underway. It was amusing how I could store 3+ chopped trees in a little box ;)

Empowered State by grizeldi 2017-12-12T04:08:32Z

It took a few tries to mine enough to afford a sentry before losing, but once past that hurdle it became pretty fun. It felt truly strategic, how I had to make a solid sentry grid before mining more, then reinforce the grid. The environment looked nice, and placing the turrets went smoothly. I liked how the sentries sprayed the rabbits with space stuff rather than bullets or something, and they had some personality by looking around. Overall cool game, seems like a solid basis for a full game too.

The Great lake noise by onedateforprom 2017-12-14T05:17:06Z

This started out with a serious tone, but became goofy really fast. The stomach as a character was pretty funny :)

Feature Creep by Garur 2017-12-10T05:56:53Z

Funny game, enjoyed playing! I could see this as a fun intro activity for a beginner's game development course.

Greedy Arena by Jeremy little 2017-12-10T01:25:21Z

I like the clean art style, and the physics of the coins. This was fun but challenging - the difficulty curb was steep for me, so it was hard to get enough $ to buy things. It was unclear to me what increased the multiplier. I noticed 2 bugs: sometimes after getting hit, it would fire continuously until I had 0. And once, I got stuck to the east doorway. But overall, cool entry.

ICTOAN by devsaur 2017-12-10T05:21:03Z

The particles are pretty, and have funny/amusing shapes. The puzzles are interesting, and I appreciated the mechanic of choosing when the "timer"/health starts running out. The music was busy and distracting though- something more mellow and spacey would've helped concentration, and better matched the clean scifi visuals.

Statues by giucapan 2017-12-15T04:51:40Z

This is an interesting way to portray a message, while keeping things simple. I wondered what the message is by mixing the Statues game with a political situation. The King's breathing sounds, and strange thoughts, made me think he might be dreaming. Overall, a unique, thought-provoking entry, with nice art and sound effects.

Librood by Aihasto 2017-12-10T06:33:11Z

One of my favorite LD40s- great art, animations, and interesting story about the imagination. The character felt lifelike, though looked like she was in a windy environment (which added to the eerie mood). I wished the camera view had been closer to better view the detailed art, and not be swaying (slight motion sickness there). I'd love to see this game developed further! Overall, impressive and inspiring.

I took too many drugs by Neecko 2017-12-26T05:17:52Z

First, I enjoyed just looking around to the funky music. It was fun to discover each pill, and I restarted a lot just to create some beautiful combinations of 2-3 effects. Some effects were less pleasant, but added to the challenge. I finally found a way to get all 10, starting with the tub, ending with the super colors, and the music made a nice compass. I wished there was a win screen, because it truly felt like a real effort! A potential bug was that 2 times, pressing E at nothing made the music stop. It's hilarious how big the pills were against the more realistic art style. Overall, really fun entry!

Shroom Hunter by drnoir 2017-12-06T04:28:27Z

Nice environment and colors. I ran around avoiding zombies and just collecting mushrooms. The first weapon occupies a lot of screen space, so I was glad to find the bow and arrow- I could see better and it was more fun to use. I searched everywhere for the last shroom and figured it's in one of the ponds, so I stepped in... and died! There were some nice nature sounds and music, but they started and stopped at odd times.
