I like this kind of games. The art is neat but very dark and sometimes I was confused. I also wouldn't divide game on night/day phase by poping up the menu. It breaks the feel. Instead I would love to see art smoothly transit from day to night state. This will indicate me that something bad will happen :) Right now it's always night for me

pixeye 2017-12-05 11:41

https://i.gyazo.com/ff4cd211f98bf4971e1eb3168058225b.png also the mistake i've got trying to restart

noaim91 2017-12-05 12:56

Yeah I´m sorry that the restarting breaks the game :-/ I was running out of time.

justin-toyo 2017-12-05 14:21

The art was super great! I love the game, but my restart didn't really didn't work...

nope404 2017-12-05 14:24

This is super neat! Any plans to continue working on it after ld?

ilseroth 2017-12-05 14:31

Honestly, amazing art, maybe I am just a sucker for pixel art but for the time provided it has a solid style to it. The gameplay seems to be implemented well, even if it's not my normal thing. My one complaint is that (maybe I'm missing something) but I can't see the towers actually firing at the enemies attacking which kinda just makes that phase a little awkward as enemies just vanish. In addition, compared to most Ludum entires you have solid music and sound; granted it seems you had a dedicated member just for it, but it shows.

netherlab 2017-12-05 14:31

Absolutely beautiful looking game. Beautiful pixel art and the use of colours to compliment it.

Great job overall, I'm impressed by how much you got in in so little time!

kiririn51 2017-12-05 14:33

Love the art direction and how quick the game is. Easy to pick up too, I just wish the siege parts were easier to follow.

deathstorm 2017-12-05 14:37

A good game but the wrong descriptions in the build menu for Saw mill, ore mine and Tavern was very confusing at first.

Also an indicator from where the rats attack would be great (or a minimap).

Overall a prettya nice and solid game.

Well Done.

P.S. I got a BlueScreen Error while playing XD (during let the game run on speed 6) Error: game/map/map.lua:180: attempt to index a nil value

xclementx 2017-12-05 14:37

Beautiful game, congratulations  Reminds me a bit of Age Of Empire II

lugdumdare-team 2017-12-05 14:43

Nice entry ! Really good mood and lovely graphics ! Just to let you know, there is probably a memory leak because my game suddenly crashed after 10mn. It would be great to block the possibility to add a building on an incorrect tile (for example, adding a mine on a tile where there is no mountains nearby). I miss-clicked and I could not delete the building I added. Anyway, good job ;)

rixium 2017-12-05 14:43

Wow. This is great, it feels almost complete. The art work is fantastic. The music could use some variety but it wasn't bad, the sounds were all awesome.

I would purchase this if it was made in to a full game, I'm impressed.

I found a bug: sometimes when you try to purchase an item and you don't have enough money, it'll be shown as green behind the button, if you sneak the mouse off the button slightly and click, you can purchase it and your funds will go into negative.

blinry 2017-12-05 14:53

Lovely art and lovely music, this is really high-quality stuff! <3 I especially liked the moment of the first attack! Controls and interaction feel snappy - the gameplay doesn't seem too original, though.

Some bugs: The three rightmost function buildings have the same description. The popups don't appear when the game is paused. The game crashed during the second wave, but that could just be me using Wine on Linux...

quaternius 2017-12-05 15:07

Just incredible visuals and music, the gameplay was great too! Amazing job.

tatos 2017-12-05 15:21

Great and fun game, I like the art so much. It's a pity that the game have frozen at the 4th or 5th night.

maxime-catel 2017-12-05 15:39

Really nice game ! :p

michael-clavell 2017-12-05 16:34

Really good art and audio. Was kind of confusing at first, but I guess that just comes with these types of games.

blobinet 2017-12-05 17:30

Really nice art and music !

binaryunit 2017-12-05 17:37

The art is beautiful

mikeandtherest 2017-12-05 18:30

This game is amazing so far! I really hope you guys could continue developing it further. I will definitely follow its progress on Twitter. Good job!

josefnpat 2017-12-05 19:37

I really enjoyed this game! I love the graphics and the music, and of course I loved the RTS part. Some tooltips threw me off, thinking everything is for a lumberjack, but I think i got my way through it.

I ran into this bug, btw: https://i.imgur.com/Ej281Lz.png

ahintoflime 2017-12-05 20:32

I absolutely love the art style of the game. I like the idea of the gameplay too, but didn't have a ton of fun playing it-- maybe it just needs a hand-hold-ey tutorial section or maybe more visual feedback on what you are doing as you play. It's very static to look at and hard to decipher what needs to be done.

bificommander 2017-12-05 21:45

A very nice looking game that I would've rated even higher if it weren't for the bugs. The incorrect descriptions on what the buildings do is annoying, most of the rats didn't show up to actually attack, and I got an error when trying to save the game. Also, some visual feedback of the towers shooting the rats would've been nice. Still, an impressive atmospheric game.

konomizure 2017-12-05 21:46

Really awesome game! Thanks for providing the 32bits version!

simon-rahnasto 2017-12-05 22:18

I am so in love with this game, it is one of few games that I have given a near perfect score in every category.

First of all, how the amount of polish in this game is out of this world. I have never seen a LD game with save and load game, like wow. And then you have small QoL things like time control and an amazing UI. Graphics are stunning and audio just feels so right.

I love strategy games and this hits home on every level. Please consider further development, I would 100% buy this game :)

lyrcaxis 2017-12-05 22:45

I was having a blast until I tried to build on an enemy while in pause mode just to see what'll happen.

game broke :(

sebastian-lague 2017-12-06 09:01

The game is stunning to look at (though visual distinction between day and night would have been very nice). Was a bit confused by my farms, which often didn't display that they were accumulating food, though the end-of-day log showed that they actually did. Game froze for me around day 15 and I had to forcequit (mac build). Excellent atmosphere, well done!

koemeterion 2017-12-06 13:03

Amazing game! Need a bit of more polish but still its a great game with a lot of fun. Would like to see more in the future from it.

kizu 2017-12-06 14:01

Wow the graphics are sooooo cooool !

local-minimum 2017-12-06 18:33

After having played many attempts at strategy-games through the years of participating in LD, I'm really impressed with the amount of content and functionality you managed to get in during the weekend. The graphics was really nice as was the mood and the setting. As for the balance in the game, after the initial buildings there wasn't much of a challenge. (I didn't mind for the scope here though). It was also a bit awkward that the only way to explore the world was to build your way around it. So I started building a chain of towers going south until the game crashed:

ld_rattendorf_error.png

But in general a really nice game.

ithasgrass 2017-12-06 21:41

My computer says this game was last modified in 2016....

kutase 2017-12-06 21:42

Good game. Graphics looks very nice.

randomhuman 2017-12-06 21:55

@ithasgrass The Mac version? That seems to be when the copy of Love2D that I have was modified - apparently adding a game to the package doesn't update the modification date? I've just created a post-jam build and it still says 2016, so I dunno...

randomhuman 2017-12-06 22:08

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! We've put up a post-jam version that addresses some of the issues people have seen, but it does still have some issues. We plan to release another version next week with more significant improvements.

andreas-ragen-ayal 2017-12-06 22:13

I am amazed at the amount of content you guys managed to put into this. The real time strategy elements of the game are surprisingly well fleshed out.

I also got a null value error: Screenshot 2017-12-07 00.11.22.png

lukbebalduke 2017-12-07 00:16

Impressive game! Gorgeous polishment and good graphics (pixel art was great, colors were great, I just think a little bit more movement and animations in the scenario would help giving life to a static game, especially because the gameplay is already strategic and slow).

I liked the way the game works, it is a classic archetype but it does work well! One thing that would help is to change some text from the 'day report' to icons, it would probably help the visualization.

Everything was atmospherical and I really entered in the game feel, the music, the colors, the scenario, cool and polished setting.

Unfortunately, I also got a crash (but that is no problem at all for a LudumDare).

AWESOME JOB! I really did appreciate your work and I did enjoy Rattendorf! :)

fluidvolt 2017-12-07 00:52

Slick presentation, oh emm gee! Love the graphics, they're very evocative and moody, and the music is up there -- I especially like the night-seige music. Had a lot fun placing and designing my town! Great work all.

goat-toaster-games 2017-12-07 02:56

What I played of it, I loved it! The graphics are absolutely wonderful, great little concept.

However I got this error I think on night 3, just as the rats were attacking.

error.png

mik3 2017-12-07 12:46

The visuals are just great. They are painting a really nice atmosphere for the game. I have experience some crashes, but it wasn't too bad. A bit of polishing on that at it would be great.

blizary 2017-12-07 19:37

Loved the visual they really help with the atmosphere i believe you were going for. Unfortunately like many others the game did crash for me as you see but i believe that was a bit my fault since i placed it on speed 6 =P gew.png but in the end i restarted the game and ended up playing for quite a while...ended up filling a loot of space with towers =P U6462362ntitled.png Good job overall =)

axoona 2017-12-07 22:40

it's very solid entry. I loved the general mood and the graphics (of course :) the concept of playing as rats is cool too!

altough I admit it is a bit confusing and I really would like some sort of tutorial or help with the different buildings and the general objective. for example the ore mine would often not yield any ore or stones and I didn't really know why (even though I put them beside the mountains).

the dificulty is quite challenging right from the start (I believe I died on my first night at first play), but you get used to it. I also finished the game on a bug after 12 or more waves. unfortunately forgot to take a screenshot... I played the fixed version.

But anyway congrat's on putting up a strategy game in a weekend!

hatchet 2017-12-08 18:41

:O That art! It's so amazing! Love that nightly palette, and the little details on the buildings. The game is very relaxing, and building stuff is super fun. I love these kinds of games. Reminded me of Age of Mythology. The interface is also super clean and easy to understand. I would only like to see the towers shooting stuff at the rats, but I understand there isn't that much time to do all of that :) And perhaps a more obvious indicator of when the night is coming, since I very rarely looked at the clock in the corner. But that is perhaps because I was too focused on the game :D

Overall, super fun, and super visually pleasing entry! With more features and polish, I can see this becoming a really great game! Great job!

nax-89 2017-12-09 00:09

It has some bugs but other than that the game it's fantastic! nice art, simple and working mechanics. And fun, congrats! with some work it can be an Amazing mini-RTS.

arnochux 2017-12-09 13:05

Great Tower defense game with a nice Pixel art touch !

sayomgwtf 2017-12-09 20:58

Game crashed at the start, it was a bit confusing at first (I'm guessing the idea of a tutorial would be helpful). Other than that, I loved the art direction and the pixel art :)

mathiouza 2017-12-09 21:21

Really cool game ! I think that is the game I stay the most longer in this Ludum Dare ! Great job ! There is few bugs though and that is too bad that you did not manage to finish the art for the game :/ That would be awesome !

But anyway, that is the best game I playyed so far for this LD, so congrats :)

naali 2017-12-09 21:49

Nice job, I really like the graphics.

hayzar 2017-12-09 22:57

I'm really impressed by this stunning work! the graphics are amazing, I'm amazed.

fangzhangmnm 2017-12-10 06:12

Really good graphics and music. However, there are problems - No attack animation and hp bar - Wrong shadow rendering order - cannot remove building - The game crashed after some rounds - mouse got stuck - want some tooltips - no clear game goal - the enemy spawn rate didn't fit the game pace - The night went on even if all the enemies are died - Not realized the map can scroll ar first. Then needed a minimap to notice where the attack began

It would be a very good game. Come on.

totsboy 2017-12-10 08:07

Wow, extremely polished, gorgeous graphics! Only problem I had was I ran into a bug midway through, a blue screen bug on the Mac version.

mr-madcat 2017-12-10 14:02

Looks pretty cool, awesome art and pretty good music. But I think it has a problem with higher speeds. Crashed for me on speed 6 after a few days. And I didn't get what the objective was. Simply to stay alive as long as possible? If so it seemed a bit easy, at least on the small map, since after building stuff the first five days I just skipped all days by idling on full speed.

jaimuepe 2017-12-10 16:03

Very cool game! It has a lot of content, however after a while it became too easy, as i had a ton of resources and towers. It had some issues here and there (z-ordering, couldn't place a building in a slot for no reason, some nights had no enemies) but it's a great game :) Congratulations guys!

Btw i got this error (i played the jam version so maybe it's been addressed already, but just in case): error.PNG

ithildin 2017-12-11 00:28

The amount and quality of content you've put together for a 72h game is impressive. The music and pixel art in particular were amazing.

Some have mentioned the confusing tooltips. Besides that, I also missed the ability to delete a building and maybe claim some resources back: I got bad luck with the generator and my map had no mountains, so the ore mines were useless (I didn't realise until after I'd placed one because of the tooltip bug).

Speaking of which, if the maps can be as random as it gets, then an alternate way of acquiring resources would be a welcome addition to make the game fairer. I'm aware that it probably would have been too much for the time, but pillaging back, trading or even just scavenging the dead rats' come to mind.

In spite of these things, congrats on a great entry overall!

secretstage 2017-12-11 02:35

Impressive entry in terms of graphics and sound. I'm sure the gameplay is fun as well but unfortunately my game would always crash after around half a minute (I tried the fixed version). Hope there will be a fix soon, I'd love to play it properly!

peachtreeoath 2017-12-14 04:42

Very professional looking game. One thing that really makes this game stand out is its daring color scheme. It's fits the mood very well and makes every day feel very ominous. I think the combat is a bit simple, but personally in these types of games I do prefer to have a robust SimCity portion of the game anyways and you had a nice system where the players had to think about their building placement a bit. Ultimately this is a great start on a deeper game, just needs some more gameplay to fit that polish.

meursault 2017-12-14 09:22

Wow this is really impressive. I felt a little lost in the beginning but well done :-)

dunin 2017-12-14 15:03

Impressive work!

Of course, it needs more feedback, debugging and balancing, but graphics and music are wonderful and it is already fun to play...

Very cool for a jam game!

dumivid 2017-12-14 19:36

Look at this, one of best game i've seen this LD. Small and polished, as it should be on game jams. Also i dont even know what to say against this game, just 5/5. Only think it misses is the amount on content but this is literaly just a little drop in the sea. Well done.

spiffy 2017-12-15 15:28

Amazing take on the theme. Very well made, very well polished. Audio was delightful. Aesthetic is top notch.

Stuff to improve, a smoother transition to night time. Perhaps a simple tutorial on how to build to begin with. The tip for building a lumber mill was helpful.

While I'm personally not a fan of base building games in this manner I can appreciate a damn fine game when I see one.

falak 2017-12-18 13:56

I really love this game!

nanda 2017-12-18 20:53

Really fun. It does have a lot of bugs from what I've seen, but for a jam game, it's still amazing and complex. Great Atmosphere, Great Art, Great Music!
