LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

The Dark Castle by Joror 2017-12-06T17:19:42Z

The UI is nice, and the music is well chosen. Well done!

There are some places I feel railroaded though, like I was given the choice of being a bit more noisy, with 3 noisiness already, or doing something silly.

Also, I got to a place where I could basically do nothing, because I had none of the prerequisites needed for any of the choices. The list was completely red.Screenshot from 2017-12-06 19-16-05.png

Save the Hats by Gruhh 2017-12-07T18:05:21Z

The catch is a pretty good mechanic. It makes the game a bit more challenging.

The platforming isn't as good you can barely jump, unless I misunderstand the control scheme.

Also, sometimes when a hat is on the floor you cannot pick it up. You need to do like two passes before it is registered...

But all in all, it's a pretty cool game!

GameJam Survival Simulator by VicoViper 2017-12-06T12:42:12Z

The graphics are a little buggy, when you click stuff before the previous animation is done, it blends the two.

Progression is quite slow, but enjoyable for a couple of playthroughs.

Well done!

Smile Corp by tinykidtoo 2017-12-07T21:33:26Z

As soon as I started the game, I got a pink slip saying I was fired. Right out of the gate.

SHURIKA! by disperse 2017-12-07T18:18:16Z

The controls were a little fiddle-y. I think one player is enough, or perhaps the ability to chose whether to play 1p or 2p.

Also, I think it would have been better to have the aiming and throwing controlled by the mouse, like your average twin-stick.

But the concept is pretty cool. I liked it. :)

CARnage by Rolle 2017-12-07T20:35:04Z

I agree with the comments about upgrade shops. It would be nice if the run over people gave you something, aside from more red on the race track.

The car handling is surprisingly good. I'd have liked them to be a bit faster, and the speed boosts a bit more .... boosty?

A very solid game. Well done! :)

Spacelitch by Flaterectomy 2017-12-07T11:25:17Z

The art style, as many have already noted, is top notch! ... as is the music.

The dialog is also really funny. Do I understand that I'm playing a dog, piloting a ship, because the "ace pilot" doesn't know how to pilot? :D

The fact that the player's own bullets are dangerous is cool and I didn't understand that at first.

The death seems a little buggy, because it takes about a second before the ship sprite vanishes, just leaving the engine exhaust and silence. I hit an enemy ship and managed to travel halfway to the other end of the screen before the ship vanished and I respawned. This made it difficult to understand what it is that I died to. I think @lancejz had the same problem, their comment seems familiar.

The space bar is the button to shoot and it is also the button to advance dialog. This means that if you, like me, spam the shoot button, you will lose out on some dialog when you don't expect it. Different buttons for both would be better, methinks.

Lastly, this is personal preference, but I would have liked the ship to move faster and the pop-gun shots to be a bit larger (or have hit boxes that are a little bigger) but I guess that's just me being sucky ad shmups.

Good game! :)

Honey Money by harusame 2017-12-06T21:13:12Z

The music is pretty cool. I like how it transitions to let you know when you're not being chased anymore.

I also like that the moral of the game is NOT to steal. Bonus points for that.

NeonTropics by neontropics 2017-12-06T23:42:01Z

Nice voxels! The enemy design is pretty interesting.

I think you need some UI prompts to help with navigation and understanding where the player needs to go. I restarted the first room three times before I understood I needed to go left. And in the second room I tried going up, because I thought that was where I needed to go.

Dwarven Dungeon Defense by TolMera 2017-12-07T20:47:23Z

I think some sort of UI would come in handy, so that you can retry without having to reopen the file.

Also, I think you need to look into how you built your project and how you're distributing it. I think it would be easier for everyone concerned if we didn't need to install the game. Perhaps see if you can have some Web version of it on a hosting site: that way more people can have a look at it.

Dwarven Dungeon Defense by TolMera 2017-12-07T21:21:09Z

Hmm. Good to know. Unity seems to be very popular. I know I use it, and so does almost everyone else. Perhaps you too should join the dark side. We have cookies! :D

Butcher's Trials by Phairero 2017-12-06T08:37:00Z

The graphics style is pretty cool. It yould be nice if the background was also pixel art, like the characters.

The music is awesome!

Bunny Mayhem Simulator by souperstrawer 2017-12-06T08:32:38Z

I love the secret areas you have to unlock. And the puzzles are also very well implemented!

Disco Warriors by mikkpr 2017-12-06T08:39:40Z

The music was incredible. I also liked the title screen. The idea to have a rhythm game was also really nice.

Spitty Space Faces by howardcs 2017-12-06T16:40:37Z

I agree that the acceleration was a bit wonky. I think it would have been nice to implement a "brake" or retro rockets, so that you can slow down your ship.

I liked the sound effects. They were silly. :D

Dish Rush by WirkilichKeinBaum 2017-12-07T00:00:52Z

Well, there's nothing to add. This game is firing on all cylinders! You have an awesome art style, tight controls and well picked sounds.

The only gripe I have is that the player character can vanish off screen. Perhaps some colliders or walls to the left and right?

Briiik by Goloso Games 2017-12-07T20:38:34Z

AAAAAH! I love it!

It would be nice to have some powerups to slow some down or freeze a sector, or make some of them increase in size for a time, or something.

Identity by Kataware 2017-12-06T21:43:58Z

I mean, you say the graphics aren't good, but you are mistaken. The graphic style of this game is incredible. It looks amazing. Don't sweat it.

I think KISS is a pretty good philosophy to jam by. There are a number of kinda simple stuff that would have made the experience a little better. First off: the camera. Screenshot 2017-12-06 23.32.26.png Screenshot 2017-12-06 23.33.59.png It clips through the floor and walls.

Second, while I LOVE the way you have text floating about, it's weird that it isn't oriented toward the player sometimes and in many cases is not oriented to the camera either: Screenshot 2017-12-06 23.34.11.png Screenshot 2017-12-06 23.33.23.png

And my last gripe, for some weird reason my PC likes faceplanting into the box: Screenshot 2017-12-06 23.34.25.png

But don't let my criticism dampen your spirits: The music you chose was awesome (though it cut off very suddenly) and I really like the art style and graphics. I hope you have the time to complete the game, because I would love to play it when it's ready. :)

P.S. Have a look at my game, if you have a minute. It's my first jam and so I'm shamelessly fishing for feedback.

Justify the Means by Goat Toaster Games 2017-12-07T18:13:49Z

I loved the story and dialog. It was pretty cool.

The end was a little abrupt, but that makes sense, seeing as how we were all on a time constraint.

I think the platforming could ba a bit more precise, it was, to quote a character, "floaty".

I also loved the fourth wall breaks. They were refreshing. :D

My Alien Life! by muromets 2017-12-07T11:35:41Z

I think a minimap of some sort would be useful, because I didn't understand where I was supposed to go.

Also, perhaps you can change the color of medkits after they have been used? That would make it easier to keep track fo which ones you have used and which ones you have not.

I really like the concept, though. Well done!

Cats Them All! by arctic_allosaurus 2017-12-06T12:33:34Z

Awesome! As a fellow cat game enthusiast, I approve of the theme!

I like how incredibly well responsive the game is.

I would have liked it better if I could have used the directional keys, but that didn't seem to work for me.

Lord Covington's Cup by Sarrixx 2017-12-06T21:18:05Z

The voiceover was noticed. While I didn't enjoy it, I appreciate the effort.

I found it weird that glasses kept falling and shattering no matter what I did. I could stand still and still some glasses would fall over.

I like the idea of the game. It's an interesting take. :)

Goonisher by aaforcebox 2017-12-07T00:11:41Z

I think the camera controls would have been better using a mouse, rather than A and D. Perhaps you could have had both?

I think some sound prompts are in order, so you hear when gems are stolen or you are slowed.

I like the mechanics. They're pretty solid and the dungeon is quite the maze. I got lost a couple of times, which is really cool. :)

Hug Me I'm Cold by reizoukin 2017-12-07T21:17:36Z

I agree with the sweater ballance. In addition, I think it would be more interesting if the level were more of a maze rather than a simple square. That would be more interesting to explore.

You could have lit fireplaces where the player can warm themselves up before continuing on their search of whatever it is they are looking for.

Also, not sure how this would change the ballance of the game, but I think it would be nice to have some visual indicators at the edge of the screen so the player has some inkling of where to find some stuff. This might be more useful in an irregular level.

The music is pretty nice, and I like how the player character's visuals change with the extra sweaters. Really cool! :)

Hug Me I'm Cold by reizoukin 2017-12-07T21:22:25Z

If you need an extra programmer, I might be interested in helping out. :)

Kaptain Krustacean: Insectoid Annihilation by Oyianakis 2017-12-06T20:50:52Z

Ermmmm... so... what's the point of the game? What I mean is that I don't understand the objective. There's a ship, it can roll left and right and gain altitude and stuff.... and then what?

Also, please look into the left and right maneuveres. While the animation is cool, it takes way too much time and doesn't give much.

Rattendorf by NoAim91 2017-12-06T22:13:10Z

I am amazed at the amount of content you guys managed to put into this. The real time strategy elements of the game are surprisingly well fleshed out.

I also got a null value error: Screenshot 2017-12-07 00.11.22.png

Leggy by aaronw 2017-12-07T18:22:07Z

I'm not sure why, but the extra legs never attached to my body. I made it past quite a number of legs without any of them attaching.

But I LOVE the concept. If you can make it look and feel a bit better, I'd play it with glee.

Npigs by 6smith 2017-12-06T23:55:15Z

The colors are really well picked.

Looking at the previous comments, I'm not the only one with leaderboard issues.

Like everyone else, I LOVED the soundtrack and thought the falling sound was cool. Interesting that you mentioned pig death. I was sure my pig would die after that fall, but nothing happened. I just climbed back up again.

Checkpoints would be cool, but I can agree that no checkpoints make the game more challenging. But it also increases the chance of a ragequit.

All in all, one of my favourites. I love the tight controls!

Crimsonite by aman1822 2017-12-06T11:12:30Z

I'm not really a twin stick kind of guy, but it was pretty cool.

The gunplay was a bit annoying. It didn't feel like the weapon did much damage, even with the powerups. It also seems like the lazers shot by the weapon are very narrow, as in many cases I thought I should hit an enemy, but actually missed.

The graphics style is incredible. I really liked it, but the buildings block vision of the player character as well as the necessary power ups.

Lastly, I think it would be nice to have some health pickups, especially as the enemies are so many. I could barely last a two minutes.

SpaceBallz by The Triumvirate 2017-12-06T16:56:52Z

I love the idea! It's just the kind of game I'd never come up with!

I didn't play long enough to be sure, but I don't think the sun speed the sun rotates increases considerably. I think it would be pretty cool if your rotation speed increased by level.

Oh, and the heat level on the right is a little difficult to notice. I didn't notice it until it suddenly dropped back down on a level change. It has such a similar color scheme to everything else, it just blends in.

IDEA! by BetaNab99 2017-12-06T16:26:48Z

I'll jump on the sprites bandwagon: The sprites are pretty cool.

But I did not like the controls. I'm not sure whether it's specifically for the WebGL build, but jumping was incredibly difficult until I realized that the PC cannot jump while running. Perhaps you might look into how you implement the movement, because jumping while moving is incredibly necessary, especially if you expect us to dodge fast flying objects.

I also felt that the flying objects were practically impossible to dodge. Perhaps you could have a prompt show up on the right of the screen giving some warning before the things spawn? That would enable the faster and more skilled to dodge out of the way. Currently the glitch world is much easier to traverse because the lightening has a prompt: you can see it coming from above and move away.

Fatal nightmare by imod 2017-12-06T20:11:04Z

The graphics are amazing and the animation quality is very good.

The controls are OK, but not the best. The player character feels float-y and slow and the weapon feels very unwieldy. Perhaps faster attacks and animations with the sword? I think some faster movement and stronger gravity would also go along fairly well.

The music is very good, but the erie tunes from the first two dreams started getting on my nerves so I stopped.

It would be nice to understand what it is that we are collecting. The shoes, money and perfume make no sense, because it doesn't seem like I can use them and no information is offered about them, at least not in the beginning of the game.

I also found out that if you run away from the first overgrown spider, it gets stuck on a platform and once that happens the player can never get on top of it, because the monster keeps attacking at that precise time. check the screenshot for the platform in question. Screenshot 2017-12-06 21.59.21.png

Fatal nightmare by imod 2017-12-06T20:17:36Z

... also, how does this go along with the theme?

Fatal nightmare by imod 2017-12-06T21:00:22Z

Aah, I see. I didn't make it to the end, because I didn't understand why I was collecting stuff. In the two levels I played, I didn't notice any health pickups. I think they might be useful.

Catdventure by Andreas Ragen Ayal 2017-12-06T21:03:26Z

@11tomi12 actually the grab lasts only for a couple of seconds by design. I should have mentioned that.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Catdventure by Andreas Ragen Ayal 2017-12-07T11:11:35Z

Wow. I should go to sleep more often, if it results in so much feedback. Let's start from the top!

@cxsquared, you are right! Some specia kittens would certainly be a good idea. Once I get tired of playing others' games, I'll see if we can get some special kittens.

@gatinmnsok, @aaforcebox, you are correct, the playtesters in our local LDjam also felt that the time given in the normal play mode was far too long. Because the kittens are randomly generated, in random numbers, I thought that having random time proportional to the number of kittens would be a good idea. turns out I was wrong. I think I'll take a leaf from the arcade mode, because that has fixed a time per kitten of about 3-5s. Which is why you found it more difficult, @muromets: It was.

@flaterectomy, the cut out UI is interesting. I think I messed up the camera settings in the build settings. I didn't notice that before. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I think I can get that fixed pretty quickly. The 'E' and 'space' conversation is a bit more complex. Playtesters ar the local LDjam felt that space for jumping instead of 'W' or the up arrow key is more intuitive. Keyboard setting preference is something hat is never going to be a standard, I'm afraid and the only fix I can think of is rebindable keys. Thanks for the feedback on the art style. We'll try and do better next time.

Once again, thank you to everyone for having a go at our game. As a bunch of newbies, it's really nice to read about people enjoying our game and the feedback is much appreciated.

Catdventure by Andreas Ragen Ayal 2017-12-07T19:54:42Z

@rolle could you describe the steps to reproduce the missing cat? I've not encountered this yet.

It's good to know that people enjoy our game. Thanks for the feedback. :)

Catdventure by Andreas Ragen Ayal 2017-12-07T20:29:40Z

Aah. I see. I also think I understand what happened. Interesting bug. I'll have to fix that after LD. The bouncing into orbit is intended and no kitten should disappear as a result of that. :D

Thanks!

Sweg not Fast by Ryvencore 2017-12-06T08:42:49Z

I loved the music. The game felt a little retro, like a reversal of bomberman, which was nice.

I feel that the weight could have been made more pronounced, to really bring home that SWEG is heavy and not fast.

Escape Infection! by 11tomi12 2017-12-06T21:24:56Z

I also felt that the PC moved a little too slow. I think it would help the game if you increased the speed of the red blood cell, but also increased the number of viruses and stuff. It would balance out the speed. :)

Squire! Where's My Sword?! by Magnega 2017-12-06T20:57:19Z

As most of the people commenting, I love this game. Well, actually I love the idea, but I don't personally enjoy this type of game.

The graphics were cool and seemed to fit, despite being rather simple. And I totally get how this fits with the theme.

The knight's stats at the top left of the screen are a little difficult to notice, especially as most of the player's attention is at the bottom and th middle, looking at what to grab and thinking of what next to give to the knight. I barely had time to look at the descriptions!

But still. Excellent execution, well done!

Tax Evasion Hero by ebim 2017-12-06T22:03:54Z

The left mouse button didn't work for me, so I just walked around and appreciated the beauty of the game.

The music was nice, until it started looping.

Infortune by Pacha 2017-12-06T21:51:24Z

I like the idea that you have to throw your money and treasure at the enemies to kill them.

Good job!

The Disease Crawleth by balfire 2017-12-06T11:19:53Z

The graphics style and the 3D system clashes a bit. I think it would have been better as a 2D game.

The enemies move just as fast as the player and the flies always hit. This seems needlessly difficult and does not allow for skillful movement. It would be really cool if the PC could strafe or avoid the attacks.

I still enjoyed the game, of course. :)

Embrace Space by Jazeps Rutkis 2017-12-07T18:31:04Z

The lessening of the field of view with a powerup is kinda annoying. Also, it seems to me that the weapon has a low range. When I try and kill the robot in the start of the level, the lazer beam vanishes before it gets to the robot, which kinda sucks.

I love the 3D models, though. And the destructable platforms are really cool.
