LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Kill The Snowmen by elektricmaster7 2014-12-09T02:26:00

Pretty nice! It's a relatively shallow game, but it's so fast that it's fun.

Just some advice for next time: Put your help information, like controls and power-up labels, on screen while the game is running instead of having a help screen. It's a little extra work, but it makes the game so much more accessible.

Press Simulator 1964 by 2HitAdam 2014-12-09T02:42:00

Nice! At first I was disappointed that the game didn't actually enforce the fact that you didn't have to write something real - oh geez, I'm typing this review WAY faster than I normally do -, so I just mashed on the keyboard. But then I decided to play along and not cheat, and wow, you've actually got something pretty good here!

It's really a game you play against yourself, not the computer. And it's hilarious the kind of stuff I typed when I didn't have time to think about it. Well done!

Crang! by Capro 2014-12-20T02:33:00

You say the controls are random. I'm not convinced the game actually *has* controls, as pressing nothing seemed to have the same effect as pressing buttons randomly.

Get to OE-314 by kodmaster 2014-12-08T16:56:00

I love the controls! Good luck with your future work!

Sno-Man by JayCee23 2014-12-09T15:03:00

Desperately needed a help screen or maybe some in-game text describing what's going on. I played through two times and I still don't know what the building with the blue flag does, or whether the snow on the ground has any gameplay effect.

But I love the idea of a tower defense based on cooldown rather than income - it prevents you from getting stuck in too much of a rut. And of course, it's not really even a traditional tower defense, it's much more open than you normally get and that's an improvement on the genre.

I think I would have loved this game if I knew what was going on.

S.I.N.E by FloatingGhost 2014-12-09T01:40:00

My favorite game I've played so far! It's such an unusual method of control, yet it's actually quite intuitive and it makes you feel really clever when you hit something you were aiming at (or dodge an enemy's shot).

Lost Worlds by Techblogogy 2014-12-08T15:57:00

I was really impressed by the non-obvious interpretation of the theme, and the combination of the different genres.

Unfortunately, my first impression of the game was with the platforming segments, which are totally broken. I say that not just because of the insanely floaty physics that make it virtually impossible to land on a platform where the enemy is WALKING faster than you can fall, but also the annoying graphical glitch lines that flash between tiles as you move.

The maze game was much better executed, but there wasn't much gameplay to be had there.

Claustrophobia by OldPeculier 2014-12-12T15:03:00

This is pretty cool! A bit too easy though. I had no problems fending off the monsters for 7 minutes before the game crashed, and I only learned how to correctly deploy blocks, doors, and mines in the last 2 minutes.

Heer Dunter by Satyre 2014-12-09T02:35:00

Somehow, this simple game became my favorite out of the whole jam so far. You hooked me with the title - then the "I see what you did there moment" with the "Entire game [deer] on a screen" thing.

The music is catchy, the action is over-the-top, and it's all very polished. If I were to change one thing, I would make the spikes move at the same speed as the hunters - it would make more sense visually, and be a bit easier. I was killed so many times by trying to land on a hunter and then a random spike comes up right where I'm landing.

Orlyrinthum by muramasa 2014-12-09T14:57:00

Very difficult game! But oh man, that art...

Just two questions: why does it ask me for my "Username" and "Token" before every playthrough? And what's a "Token"?

The Fast and the Flatulent by Drtizzle 2014-12-09T23:56:00

"OI MATE"

I... don't really know what I just played. I think I liked it, though.

One Screen For Worlds by danidre14 2014-12-09T15:13:00

First impression: the font you used for the intro and instructions screen was very hard to read.

Ok, as for the game itself: it's very challenging. I got a strong I Wanna Be The Guy vibe from it, although the controls were unfortunately a bit more floaty. I see what you were trying to do with the "entire game on one screen" theme, but it kind of begs the question: if you've got an entire area reserved for one "screen" (help, menu, etc), why have it hidden most of the time? Why not just have it always on? Especially the help screen!

Man on the Field by Double Zero One Zero 2014-12-10T00:06:00

VERY reminiscent of Papers Please. It has the same sort of frantic quality where you're forced to make terrible decisions every second. It's very challenging, too! I think you could easily sell this on Steam if you added some more gameplay and tweaked the UI a bit (right now the most important numbers, like men on the field and men waiting for treatment, are deemphasized and hard to see)

Ludum Fortress by EthanWebster 2014-12-08T15:44:00

It's a pretty standard top-down shooter - no twists here, except that you have to buy your upgrades in real time. Personally, I don't like reading tooltips while being shot at. Also, the red flash whenever anything happens (like an enemy spawning or dying) is really distracting. It looks like you're taking damage. Oddly enough, there's no effect when you actually do take damage!

Overall, though, it's technically solid.

Zoom by ChezPain 2014-12-11T15:19:00

This game had a great Thomas Was Alone vibe to it. But it was incredibly frustrating at times because often when I pressed Z, I would just instantly die for no apparent reason.

noname by red__hara 2014-12-08T16:52:00

This is a fantastic interpretation of the theme, and great execution, too! Unfortunately, the permadeath really kills (no pun intended) the game. The combat controls are too finnicky, and guards are too quick to shoot, for the nature of game where you don't really know where you're going to show up when you walk down the hall or through a door.

Meowcalypse by Bonobo Games & Mechanic Moon 2014-12-20T02:31:00

Fantastic art and premise! The zero-gravity controls were cool, too.

Against All Odds by billrizer 2014-12-09T14:49:00

Very fun! I loved the flashlight effect and the zoom in/out. A bit repetitive, though.

ManyQuest by SkullPixel 2014-12-09T01:17:00

I think I like this. Top marks for innovation! I love the floaty controls (normally you won't hear me say that!) and the simple, yet surprisingly deep gameplay. The timer, which I hated at first, really added some pressure and forced me to constantly choose between going for a +Knight powerup or the next chest.

Gripes, though:
- Most of the time when you start, some or all of your knights will spawn on spikes, and this usually doesn't give you enough time to get them off before they're immediately spawnkilled.
- A goblin touches a knight. Does the knight die? Or does the goblin? Some predictability here would be a nice offset to the difficulty of the rest of the game.
- It's not obvious that you get more time from collecting chests. Had there been a little bit of text that said something like "+2 seconds" or whatever you get, I would have understood the game probably a full two minutes sooner. (which is a lot for a mobile game!)

Surveillance Screen by YourNerdyJoe 2014-12-20T13:33:00

Clever idea! Missing a little something though. I think you were going for the tension of not knowing what's going on in the other cameras, but I think it would be a better challenge to have something going on in EVERY camera, be able to see all of it at once, but only be able to interact with one at a time.

Also, it took me a few playthroughs to realize that shooting the big red circle was NOT the objective XD

Fill the bar by SMASH BASH 2014-12-10T15:39:00

I have no idea why this is so fantastic. Great work!

Bathold by chibiFlux 2014-12-10T00:11:00

Very nice, I love the atmosphere. Low visibility and (intentionally) imprecise controls makes for a very challenging game, and I wound up ragequitting on the third level.

Clear Screen by Valtaroth 2014-12-10T00:18:00

That's one challenging strategy game you've got there with a frantic pace!

Goblin Rush by goblin 2014-12-09T01:21:00

Ehh... there's not really a whole lot of gameplay here. The sprites are very nice looking, but in motion they lose something; I guess the animations feel stiff.

Spider Simulator by Stechas 2014-12-09T01:52:00

It's an interesting idea, but it's really damaged by the wonky physics. Sometimes the spider will float way off of any strand, and sometimes it won't climb onto a strand that's right in front it. And other commenters have mentioned the the fact that it's more optimal to make a curtain on the right side than a web.

That said, while I say I didn't really like it, I did play it *way* longer than I expected. It certainly has a certain addicting quality to it.

MeteorStrike by D.B.O.NStudios 2014-12-09T02:19:00

I think you're onto a cool idea here, but you *have* to be able to restart without closing the window in a game like this.

My first attempt was to dig straight down, Minecraft style. But I quickly ran out of ammo and got stuck. I hit pause and restarted, this time I realized being up top was the way to go. Slightly annoyed that I can't walk past the trees, but I stayed in the section I spawned in and tried to dodge the meteors. I failed. After working up the motivation to open the game again and try again, I got much the same result.

Also, protip: for your next jam, don't make an installer. Just let me run the executable.

You Are Lost by farwyler 2014-12-26T14:53:00

Amazing visuals and audio, great simple gameplay. The tuning felt off though, and not in the player's favor. First, I have no idea what the goal is. Why would I ever leave the first safe zone? Beyond that, the wolves need a bit of softening. As the game is now, even one wolf onscreen is a serious challenge, and there's usually about four.

Cubelicious by spazzarama 2014-12-09T01:58:00

A great foundation! I understood the game the moment the cube started turning. Unfortunately, the corner physics are really glitchy. Like, game-breakingly glitchy. Almost every time I died, I died to the game not detecting that I was going around a corner.

-CHAMBER- by ben_pxlplz 2014-12-09T01:28:00

I really like this idea! In practice, it's a bit too random; I think I maybe got two intentional matches out of the few minutes I played. Most games I started, I got crushed by the block over the left safe zone because the blocks on the spikes matched. It's also really hard to push the blocks around; maybe the game could have used a pick-up/carry mechanic?

This idea could really go somewhere! Just needs a bit more to it.

STS (Simple TopDown Shooter) by TheScragglyMan 2014-12-09T15:19:00

First impression: Please don't make an installer, just distribute the EXE.

For the game itself: Very nice graphics! I love the fog effect. Some of the controls are a bit weird. I don't see any reason why I wouldn't have auto-fire on and the ship closed, so why is it an option? The teleportation mechanic is a cool idea, you probably could made a whole game just out of that. The enemy movement is pretty cool, too.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Functor by Enneract 2015-04-24T23:30:00

Fantastic visuals! And you really nailed the camera controls - that's a tricky thing for planetoid game.

Unfortunately, I really have no idea what's going on in terms of gameplay. I couldn't figure out how to destroy the towers and I mostly just wound up clicking randomly in their general direction.

Collapse by phaze0 2015-04-24T23:38:00

Not really sure what's going on here... Seems most effective to simply wait with the piston collapsed for a bunch of guys to cluster up, then let them in, then quickly collapse the piston again. No upgrades needed.

Science is a weapon by mokujin 2015-04-25T12:30:00

I love smashing rats with a time machine! Got a bit repetitive after a while, though. Also feels like the Braid-y time travel mechanic was wasted - most of the time I only needed to tap TAB to set the trap.

EDDA by madameberry 2015-04-23T01:05:00

I have no idea how well I was doing, but somehow I didn't care. The charm and personality here is off the charts.

A Windy Climb by sockfolder 2015-04-25T00:12:00

Not a bad little platformer!

Bond by Cheshyr 2015-05-09T14:33:00

Wow! That was fantastic. Such a simple concept that enables so much gameplay. Sometimes it was a bit frustrating to click on things (especially my own character) while in motion - either a more forgiving targeted system that snaps to the thing closest to my click, or a slowdown effect, would go a long way. Add something like that, put this on Steam, and you'll have my money!

Dirty Fork: Unleash the Mayhem by SmilingCat 2015-05-09T14:39:00

Well, that was a laugh! Controls needed some work, though; you forgot to lock the cursor, making mouse look difficult.

ForgeCraft by Stals 2015-04-25T12:52:00

This is my favorite game of the Jam so far! Simultaneously relaxing and stressful.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or intended design, but THANK YOU for making life points a bonus feature and not an end-game condition! Because I really stink at matching games and I probably never would have finished otherwise.

The Fish Sniper by PushmePullyu 2015-04-20T14:02:00

I think this game would have benefited from either a more Flappy Bird sort of scoring system that judges your progress based on how far you got, or a much more forgiving maze to test your ability to target the enemy at the end. At least, I assume that's how it works; I never got to the end.

It started with the rain by Rother Games 2015-04-22T14:37:00

Crashing for me immediately on starting the first level, Windows 8 64 bit.

You Can Shave the Baby by chikun Dev Team 2015-05-09T14:45:00

What... did I just play? O_o

Music Battles by bmfs 2015-04-23T00:12:00

I'm going to refrain from voting on this one because I'm only one player. Graphics look nice though!

Project Z by MetoolDaddy 2015-04-23T00:29:00

The idea of using kinetic energy to charge a weapon is a really clever idea, I've never seen anything like it before. The other energy types don't seem quite as useful, though.

One level design suggestion: the scrolling grid background and the jump points indicated only by a particle system made that platforming level way more difficult than it needed to be.

Sophistication Annihilation by Newt_ 2015-04-22T14:55:00

They took the vowels first.

10/10

ERR by LukeZaz 2015-05-09T14:22:00

The theme of glitches, while it didn't affect the gameplay too much, was very clever, and I loved the error log in the top right of the screen!

Alien Prisoner by zetitup 2015-04-25T12:12:00

Welcome to LD! This is a pretty good entry. I'm not really feeling the "unconventional weapon" flavor though. The aliens are shooting eyeballs... but swap that sprite with a bullet, and the game's about the same.

The "Bureaucrat" by b3jh24 2015-04-25T12:07:00

A great concept! I think it could have been improved by designing it a little more on the "game-y" side... each character you have to interact with might have a different personality (labelled on-screen after you talk with them for a bit) that responds better to some types of tactics (the "tactic" of each dialogue option could be labelled on-screen) than others, etc. Welcome to LD! Best of luck in the future.

Trouble Cliff by catchthefloaty 2015-04-25T12:19:00

I actually wasn't expecting to like this game as much as I did... but once I figured out how things worked (that you have to hit every enemy exactly once, without them getting hit by other projectiles), it was really clever and challenging!

Caber Toss by GeeItSomeLaldy 2015-04-20T14:10:00

I rather liked this! It had a nice companion-cube vibe to it - and it's rather satisfying when the caber connects with the enemy. Tracking the distance thrown during gameplay is a nice touch too!

My only complaint is that it's hard to tell which blocks are one-way platforms that you and the caber can pass through and which will just block you.

Dagobert by Jellyhard 2015-04-23T00:49:00

Gameplay was a little bit tedious and trial-and-error for my taste. I love the seeds as weapons, though, very unique! Amazing art style... although I must confess, I usually prefer a bit more than a leaf between me and a character's privates XD

Her Majesty's Apathy Bomb by ianburnette 2015-04-23T14:38:00

Makes me want to play the Stanley Parable again! I especially liked that you listed out all the possible endings so I knew when I was finished. I'm a bit of a... completionist and I can get stuck on games like this otherwise!

Armory of W.A.T. by dallonf 2015-04-23T01:06:00

Hi GenericTeamName - the WebGL thing is really early in development on Unity's side. If you're having any troubles at all with that, I'd recommend downloading the game.

Very hot place by edve98 2015-05-09T14:49:00

I thought I was the purple thing at first. Died three times before I realized that there was a red dot that actually responded to the arrow keys.

The N.I.D. Project by Somnium 2015-04-22T14:50:00

This was a very clever concept! I had a lot of fun playing it. But it definitely needed some smoother transitions between tiles - it was hard to track movements when they teleport around. Also, I'm not quite sure what the danger was in increasing integration... it only took the level up one and it didn't seem to increase over time.

Keyboard Warrior by DugelStudios 2015-04-23T00:18:00

It's a silly idea, and I love your very practical art style! The progression feels a little bit grindy, though, and the weapons - while visually unconventional, play very much like standard melee weapon in a game. I would have liked to see some gameplay implications to whacking things with a keyboard!

Time Speed by Scornz 2015-04-23T00:37:00

This was rather fun! Reminiscent of Superhot, but definitely unique. Felt very rewarding once I got the hang of it. Well, I say I got the hang of it; my high score was 2. :P

It desperately needs a retry option on the Game Over screen. I didn't want to go through the leaderboard and title screen every time I died (which was really often)

ColorMaze by amonkalagin 2015-04-25T12:33:00

Nice game! Only complaint is that I wish I could have seen an onscreen ammo counter, though. Oh, and it was too short - but that's kind of complaint you can have!

The B Team by KhaoTom 2015-04-25T00:05:00

Pro tip: Play this with the FF7 battle theme as a soundtrack!

There is NO WAY I could have figured out the solutions on my own, so thank you very much for the SPOILERS.TXT. Loved the premise - if the puzzles were more intuitive (and obviously if there were more of them), I would buy a game like this!
